Laptop for occasional work with 2D & 3D graphics Posted: 02 Oct 2018 01:11 AM PDT * **Total budget and country of purchase:** Computeruniverse, up to 650 euro. * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** Best specifications. Good battery is fine too. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not so important. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows 10. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 1920x1080. * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** After Effects (w/ Element 3D), Blender. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** PUBG, different games for LAN parties, can't name them all because it's unpredictable which one we'll choose next. Don't mind low and medium settings at resolution lower than Full HD. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** 128 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM, 4 GB Nvidia Video Card, reliable build quality, decent cooling quality. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** Important note: I have powerful working/gaming PC at home. From time to time I have to go away somewhere and want to be able to work from there. So I'm choosing laptop for occasional work/gaming, not for regular basis. I'm choosing between HP Pavilion 15-bc301ng and Dell G3 15 3579-KRPDF atm. The second one is more powerful but its price's higher. How good will 7200U be in AE? How good will 950M be in Element 3D and video games? Dell G3 15 seems very nice (it has a higher price than I'd want though, but anyways), but people complain its screen. But, as I said earlier, I'm choosing a laptop just for occasional use, for outdoor working/gaming. What could you suggest? [link] [comments] |
[France, Budget 1000 - 1200 €] Portable & performant laptop Posted: 01 Oct 2018 07:04 PM PDT Some background: I've been thinking of getting a new laptop for a few months now as i've had my current laptop since late 2014 and it's getting a bit old with its 4th gen i5, 8Gb 1600 MHz RAM and 5400rpm 1Tb HDD (no SSD). But the biggest drawback for me now is that it's a bulky and heavy 17.3" which is really not portable at all for daily usage as a compsci college student. I pretty much never take it with me and just use lab computers at uni, and i'm realizing having a laptop with me at all times would be more convenient for note-taking, coding, etc... I've thought of getting a Macbook Pro (since the Air line seems a bit outdated on the screen and CPU side) but I just don't think 128Gb SSD would be enough and the 256Gb+ models ive seen are just too expensive for me to consider right now. So unless I find a really good deal I guess I'm leaving switching to a Macbook for a few years down the line since I'll be in college for at least 3 more years and I don't think I'll be developing iOS apps anytime soon, and I'll just dual-boot ubuntu for Unix stuff if needed. Performance is a must because I'm over with dealing with slow laptops that can't handle multi-tasking (usually heavy browsing + an IDE or Photoshop + viewing multiple PDFs, have multiple explorer windows, etc, sometimes all at once which my current laptop has trouble handling), but portability is still really important since I plan on carrying it daily, I'm thinking around 1 to 2 Kg (2.2 - 4.4 lbs?). Having USB type A ports is kinda important to me because I don't really own any USB-C devices yet. I don't really plan on gaming but I don't mind having the option to try games on medium settings, so a dedicated GPU would be nice. Not planning on getting a gaming laptop because they're generally heavier and tend to look more like gimmicky/obnoxious toys which I'm trying to avoid lol. Some tempting candidates I've come across are:
TL;DR: Not sure if i'm too demanding but my ideal laptop would approx. have these specs:

Uk/Ire €1,200 - Office/Productivity Laptop Posted: 02 Oct 2018 02:50 AM PDT
Some laptops i have been considering are: Lenovo L380 (€900) - Core i5-8250U, 256gb PCIe SSD, 8gb RAM. This machine is fairly light and has good specs. The screen is not very bright and seems to be the big area of let down. At work i will be using external monitors so this is not a huge issue. Dell XPS 13 (~€1200 with Dell's frequent discounts) - Core i7, 256gb PCIe SSD, 8gb RAM. This one is a lot more expensive, but has probably superior build quality and a better screen. Surface Pro 2017 (€1000 with type cover, approx) - 7th gen Core i5, 8gb RAM, 128gb PCIe SSD. It's a last generation chip, which may or may not make any difference with my usage. I'm certain i can get by with 128gb. It's the most portable of the lot. [link] [comments] |

$500-$1800 Wouldn't mind if I could finance. USA
Prefer a decent FPS for PUBG but not a must
My laptop recently went out on me so I'm looking for a good replacement. I'm a senior in college so that's my primary use right not with some stock trading. Would like something that will last me awhile and I don't mind paying a little more for it. Also must have a reliable Wi-Fi card. Don't need Wi-Fi cutting out mid exam! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Oct 2018 03:48 AM PDT Before anyone says that mac computers are overpriced and that I should instead build a pc, calm down. I know that Mac computers are not the best computers you can get for what you are actually paying. So let me explain why a Mac computer. I'm actually not that into gaming on pc, I usually play on consoles. I use my current pc to work (pretty much every computer can run the programs I use properly), and I travel a lot, so the new pc I get must be a laptop. But, why a Mac? Well, I somehow convinced my dad to buy me a laptop, but on the condition that it has to be a Mac computer (because almost every other laptop he's bought has broken after a year or two of use, therefore he thinks MacBooks last waaaay longer) So after the really long explanation here are my options. I don't want him to spend that much money, so my two options are the 2017 MacBook which has an intel core i5 seventh gen that runs at 1.4 GHz and has Turbo Boost up to 3.6 GHz. This one has Intel HD gaphics 615. With an SSD of 256 GB. My second option is the MacBook Pro 13" which has an intel Core i5 seventh hen which runs at 2.3 GHz and has turbo boost up to 3.6 GHz. This one has intel HD graphics 640. With a SSD of 128 GB. Both of this PCs have 8 gigs of ram ddr3. And both are at the same price. As I said before, I don't really play really demanding games on PC. I use it more to get my work done, and both of this PCs will do that great. If I get to play a game, it'll be Lol or a game as demanding as lol, so I don't really need that much of a powerful PC. Also, this would be a pretty straightforward desition, as the MacBook Pro is clearly more powerful than the MacBook 12". But I prefer way more the MacBooks 12" design, as its ultra lightweight, plus it has way better colors than the silver one of the MacBook Pro. Also, I'm considering that GeForce Now will hopefully come out the next couple years, so if it does, I'll pay it to play more demanding games, So what do you say? Considering that they're the same price and the use I'll give to it (mainly for work, not that requiring of performance) which one should I get? The 12" MacBook that I think is way better designed and that would be better and lighter for when I travel, but is slightly less powerful compared to the MacBook Pro, or the MacBook Pro which's design I don't really like, but is slightly better in performance. Thanks for your help!! [link] [comments] |

[€700] Narrowed dow to 2 laptops, appreciate thoughts and suggestions Posted: 02 Oct 2018 02:05 AM PDT My partner is looking for a laptop up to €700 tops. Posted: 01 Oct 2018 08:04 PM PDT Yet another Suggestion Puzzle for you all to solve. I'm looking for a Laptop with these nuanced parameters:
Upgrading from a Acer Aspire V5 that I mindlessly bought in 2012, which possess all these conveniences I've grown to be very fond of. Price, Detachable, Clam, 2-in-1..it doesn't matter - if it meets the criteria, it's a highly prospective candidate. Let's see what we get. [link] [comments] |
Going into college next year, looking for laptop to survive 4 years of engineering/computer science Posted: 01 Oct 2018 08:07 PM PDT
~$2,000 in the United States
I prefer good battery life and specs, but will take advice on what features would be nice to have for college
Will most likely carry it around a fair amount, so can't be too heavy or big.
Windows
~13-15 inches
Possibly CAD, but I think I'll have a desktop around for that. Light gaming like CIV, and amateur photo editing.
Civ, and other strategy games. ~60 fps
I would like to have SSD as the primary/only drive. Should have a good keyboard. Not sure if I want touch screen, so anyone with experience please offer advice!
Will be taking any recommendations that people have for what a laptop should have for college. [link] [comments] |
Would this Omen be worth it over a Dell G5? Posted: 01 Oct 2018 07:40 PM PDT I came across this open box Omen from Microcenter for $934(USD) just as I was about to pull the trigger on the Dell G5 I5-8300 and was wonder at this price point which one would be better? The Omen: http://www.microcenter.com/product/507831/OMEN_15-dc0051nr_156_Gaming_Laptop_Computer_-_Black or Dell G5: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CD3MRZF/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 I know the G5 is highly recommended through out but at this price drop for the Omen it looks like it is the better deal overall. Please let me know, thank you! [link] [comments] |
Looking for PC replacement... sort of Posted: 01 Oct 2018 07:12 PM PDT Hi. I'm selling my 4790K, 1440p 1080Ti rig because the lack of space ATM. I'm planning to build a brand new system in the next 1-2 years maybe, but meanwhile I need a PC replacement. I've searched through laptops, and seems like 1440p is not mainstream yet. 4K displays with GTX 1080 and 120Hz sounds nonsense to me, as I was struggling to get 90FPS on some games with Ultra graphics on 1440p and a 1080Ti. So I'm aiming at a laptop with 1080p display, G-Sync, 120-144Hz, 250-512GB SSD/ NVMe, 1-2TB HDD and a GTX 1070, so I can connect it to my 1440p display to run Windows on 2K and play games at 1080p on Ultra to get those 120 FPS. Although, if my display has 165Hz, and a laptop 120Hz, the G-Sync feature will be used on the external display, right? By using the internal laptop GPU...? Also, 17.3" or more would be great, but I'm not too sure if the difference between the 15.7" is that big... Asus Scar looks great and I'm not disappointed by MSI so far. And I'd prefer to avoid very bulky laptops, like the fat MSI VR editions. Cheers beforehand. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Oct 2018 07:00 PM PDT Hi there! I'm currently looking for a laptop with a touch screen and stylus support, preferably a 2 in 1. I will be using it for digital art and light gaming. I am currently torn between a Lenovo Yoga 720, Hp x360, and the Dell xps 15 2 in 1. I've researched alot and I keep coming back to these three so I would most like a comparison between the three, but I am also open to any other suggestions. The most intensive game I play is World of Warcraft so being able to run that is a plus. Not too picky about anything else, it will mostly be used at home or with an external charger so battery is not an issue. Budget is 2k but I'd love to stay as low as possible. Thanks! Posted: 01 Oct 2018 06:58 PM PDT $600-$1000, no origin specific Not looking to go overboard on something but need it to be worth the cost Need good battery life Don't care about a 2-in-1 that much, would possibly prefer to not have it Weight and Thinness not important Windows Screen size 15 or 17 inches Something to easily be able to see what's on the screen Will be doing CAD and using other programs for civil engineering This is an important factor, needs to be able to handle some semi-beefy programs Not much of a gamer would prefer to have an HP or a Dell [link] [comments] |
What's the catch with this deal? ASUS FX503VM for $764.10 Posted: 01 Oct 2018 09:33 PM PDT
ASUS FX503VM 15.6" 120Hz FHD, i5-7300HQ 2.5GHz , GTX 1060 3GB, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, 8GB DDR4. It was for $764.10. I understand compared to g3/g5, processor is 7th gen and graphic card is 3gb version. But it has 120hz screen would that offset those downsides? I heard that g5 have bad screen and card is max q version. I saw fps comparison on notebookcheck and it was almost similar on witcher etc (just 1-3 fps). Also cpu benchmarks had only 20% difference (People said difference is almost double). Should i grab it for this price? My budget is 800$ and i just play dota/cs;go but i want to be able to play some high end games next year as well. Just wanted something with 1060 and found this on amazon warehouse. Also on 9/26 dell outlets had sitewide 14% sale and i grabbed g5 with 1060 for 730$ but dell canceled my order. So i thought maybe 1060 might be reachable in my budget. [link] [comments] |
