£600-800, Computer Science uni work, Dota 2 and movies [UK]

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 04:29 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: £800, Ideally less, United Kingdom.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight and thinness is fairly important as I will need to carry it to my University buildings each day.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Preferably Windows 10/Chrome OS.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" or below preferably.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Would need to be able to run Dota 2 and have acceptable FPS, preferably at least medium quality.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Dota 2, OldSchool Runescape, maybe some League of Legends. I prefer FPS over quality settings for these games but ideally want medium or above.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good screen resolution/good display for movies is imperative. The machine being quiet is fairly important to me, a good keyboard is second to this. In terms of build quality I would like something reliable but clean/minimalist in design, not a big fan of 'GAMING ULTRA LAPTOP' styles.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thanks for any suggestions!

Laptop for occasional work with 2D & 3D graphics

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 01:11 AM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:**

    Computeruniverse, up to 650 euro.

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

Best specifications. Good battery is fine too.

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

    Not so important.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows 10.

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    1920x1080.

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

After Effects (w/ Element 3D), Blender.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

PUBG, different games for LAN parties, can't name them all because it's unpredictable which one we'll choose next. Don't mind low and medium settings at resolution lower than Full HD.

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

128 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM, 4 GB Nvidia Video Card, reliable build quality, decent cooling quality.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Important note: I have powerful working/gaming PC at home. From time to time I have to go away somewhere and want to be able to work from there. So I'm choosing laptop for occasional work/gaming, not for regular basis. I'm choosing between HP Pavilion 15-bc301ng and Dell G3 15 3579-KRPDF atm. The second one is more powerful but its price's higher. How good will 7200U be in AE? How good will 950M be in Element 3D and video games? Dell G3 15 seems very nice (it has a higher price than I'd want though, but anyways), but people complain its screen. But, as I said earlier, I'm choosing a laptop just for occasional use, for outdoor working/gaming. What could you suggest?

    [France, Budget 1000 - 1200 €] Portable & performant laptop

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 07:04 PM PDT

Some background: I've been thinking of getting a new laptop for a few months now as i've had my current laptop since late 2014 and it's getting a bit old with its 4th gen i5, 8Gb 1600 MHz RAM and 5400rpm 1Tb HDD (no SSD). But the biggest drawback for me now is that it's a bulky and heavy 17.3" which is really not portable at all for daily usage as a compsci college student. I pretty much never take it with me and just use lab computers at uni, and i'm realizing having a laptop with me at all times would be more convenient for note-taking, coding, etc...

I've thought of getting a Macbook Pro (since the Air line seems a bit outdated on the screen and CPU side) but I just don't think 128Gb SSD would be enough and the 256Gb+ models ive seen are just too expensive for me to consider right now. So unless I find a really good deal I guess I'm leaving switching to a Macbook for a few years down the line since I'll be in college for at least 3 more years and I don't think I'll be developing iOS apps anytime soon, and I'll just dual-boot ubuntu for Unix stuff if needed.

Performance is a must because I'm over with dealing with slow laptops that can't handle multi-tasking (usually heavy browsing + an IDE or Photoshop + viewing multiple PDFs, have multiple explorer windows, etc, sometimes all at once which my current laptop has trouble handling), but portability is still really important since I plan on carrying it daily, I'm thinking around 1 to 2 Kg (2.2 - 4.4 lbs?). Having USB type A ports is kinda important to me because I don't really own any USB-C devices yet. I don't really plan on gaming but I don't mind having the option to try games on medium settings, so a dedicated GPU would be nice. Not planning on getting a gaming laptop because they're generally heavier and tend to look more like gimmicky/obnoxious toys which I'm trying to avoid lol.

Some tempting candidates I've come across are:

    • The new Dell Inspiron 15 7000 (model 7580?) - specs seems pretty much maxed out with i7-8565U, 16GB 2666Mhz RAM, 512 PCIe SSD, decent GPU, FHD IPS 15,6" display. This seems like the perfect pick to me especially at that price (just a tad above 1000€ considering I can get a ~5% student discount I believe). But I'm still hesitating because I'm having trouble to find any reviews or tests on this model, especially since it seems to be an online exclusive here because I can't find Dell laptops in stores to try them out.

    • The new Dell XPS 15 (base model). - More expensive and lower specs at 8Gb RAM and half the storage space, but better screen and built quality(?), better GPU, better battery life, maybe better portability, overall known and trusted for quality and just feels more premium. There's also 10% student discount on the XPS line which makes me hesitate again... What I don't understand is how the 13" base model seems to be at the same price with lower specs?

    • I've tried the Acer Swift 5 in stores and was kinda blown away by how light it is, just that first impression made want to have it. It's touch-screen but I don't really need that and not willing to pay for an option I probably won't use much, I'd rather get a wacom tablet or something if I wanna draw. The specs are not bad, i5 and it lacks a dedicated GPU but can't really expect it to have one at that format and weight, but also not that much cheaper either. It's just that with that weight it would blend in perfectly with textbooks in my backpack haha, and I imagine wouldn't perform too badly. Not sure how sturdy it is though.

    • Part of me wonders if I should really spend that amount of money on a laptop right now since I still do have my current "laptop" (pretty much desktop) that works fine for now, which is kinda why I'm taking my time, or maybe I have buyer's paralysis lol... So i've also been looking at cheaper options like this 800€ 14" Acer Swift 3 with an i7-8550U, 8Gb RAM, 256Gb SSD + 1Tb 5400rpm HDD, same GPU as the inspiron 7000 above

    • Or just grab the cheapest Macbook Air I can find and deal with it during college... But really the reason I don't want to just cheap out on this purchase is because I tend to take care of and keep my computers for quite some time (average 5 years), so investing on a good one is worth it imo, as long as I don't live over my means as a student hah.

TL;DR: Not sure if i'm too demanding but my ideal laptop would approx. have these specs:

    • 8th gen i7 CPU

    • minimum 256Gb SSD to have some space left for a few essential apps (IDEs, Adobe Suite, etc) and storage after OS.

    • 16Gb RAM (if possible within budget).

    • a dedicated GPU (Geforce MX150 seems to be the standard with this budget)

    • 14" to 15.6" and FHD (not really looking for 4K since that could impact battery life and/or weight, +prolly overkill for my budget), thinner bezels preferred, not touch-screen.

    • be lighter and portable for daily carry

    • have a numpad? my previous laptops have always had one so kinda used to it, but lol I guess I'm willing to give that up if other specs are met.

    • AZERTY keyboard

    Uk/Ire €1,200 - Office/Productivity Laptop

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 02:50 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: €1,200, Ireland or UK

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No preference in terms of form factor, to be honest. Will be used in conjunction with an ipad and apple pencil for notetaking and media consumption

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Pretty important, will be carried along with an ipad and case

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Either windows or mac

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12 to 14 inches. 13 probably the sweetspot

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No - it will be a work/office machine - Excel will be my main program

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nothing specific to add here.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So I will be using this primarily as a work laptop. At my desk, it will be docked to external monitor. USB C would be helpful to give me more choice of docks. But i will ocassionally travel for work and for that reason, portability will be important.

Some laptops i have been considering are:

Lenovo L380 (€900) - Core i5-8250U, 256gb PCIe SSD, 8gb RAM. This machine is fairly light and has good specs. The screen is not very bright and seems to be the big area of let down. At work i will be using external monitors so this is not a huge issue.

Dell XPS 13 (~€1200 with Dell's frequent discounts) - Core i7, 256gb PCIe SSD, 8gb RAM. This one is a lot more expensive, but has probably superior build quality and a better screen.

Surface Pro 2017 (€1000 with type cover, approx) - 7th gen Core i5, 8gb RAM, 128gb PCIe SSD. It's a last generation chip, which may or may not make any difference with my usage. I'm certain i can get by with 128gb. It's the most portable of the lot.

Old laptop finally melted down. Need a replacement.

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 12:21 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $500 - $1200 -but thrift is a priority. USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A regular laptop is fine. Battery life a plus - but lower power consumption more important. Less than 50w if possible. Dependable.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not a priority.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Usually get a Windows PC and wipe it. Install Linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not terribly important. Not too tiny. Maybe 15ish.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Audio/Video editing. GIMP.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not really important. A nice plus if it could run some less-intensive games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? We try hard to buy laptops to last. The last one made it about a decade. Running Linux Mint - a less intensive OS. Have had good luck so far with Toshiba Satellites and ASUS. But one never knows where build quality goes from model to year. Sometimes they have to travel. Ought to be able to take a few bumps without breaking. Optical drive required.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. In short, a laptop likely to last. Durable. Power efficient -realize this is a trade off with processing. Suppose I'm looking for a dependable laptop capable of not stalling under video editing but maybe coming in shy of 100w.
       Thanks!

$500-$1800 Wouldn't mind if I could finance. USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Don't care if it's 2 in 1, good battery life isn't the biggest issue, best specs for the jobs are more important

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

      Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      At least 15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      Maybe PUBG?

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Prefer a decent FPS for PUBG but not a must

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good Keyboards a must, must have webcam and mic for class work

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My laptop recently went out on me so I'm looking for a good replacement. I'm a senior in college so that's my primary use right not with some stock trading. Would like something that will last me awhile and I don't mind paying a little more for it. Also must have a reliable Wi-Fi card. Don't need Wi-Fi cutting out mid exam!

Looking for a small portable laptop (1500€, Europe)

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 01:22 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Europe. 1500€ is max but I would prefer something around 1300€. The cheaper the better.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't really care about 2 in 1 form. Good battery life is important but I think the most important thing to me is best specifications for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? It is very important because I will be carrying it around a lot and I have a small bag. The maximum dimensions are 320x230mm and the thinner it is the better. So something as big as an A4 format notebook.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Probably 13.3in is the only screen size that fits my criteria.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I probably won't be doing any CAD/CAE work on my laptop because I have a PC for that but I would not like to have a bad GPU. I am gonna use it for programming (Python, Java) and other school work.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Probably not gonna game on my laptop. If I do it will be League of Legends on low to mid settings.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard and reliable build are important. I would also like a SSD but I don't need a big one (I think 256 GB is enough). I would also like to have at least 2 USB ports. Other things are not so important. A good screen is a big plus that I would be very happy if I can get it for this money.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am mostly gonna use it for programming and doing other easy work on it like presentations, writing documents, watching movies, browsing internet,...I would also like to have a quad core CPU and 16 GB of RAM.

I don't care about/want the 2-in-1 factor, but a good battery life and enough ram to stream, load multiple browser tabs and do some word processing at the same time are important. I don't really know anything about specs- I guess I'd prefer the best specs within my budget?

*** **How important is weight and thinness to you?***\*

very important- not over 3.5 lbs. The thinner the better, but weight is more important than thinness to me.

I need something relatively sturdy to last a few years, an HDMI port and at least 2 (preferably 3) USB ports.

I'd love something with good viewing angles

I'd prefer a good trackpad, a keyboard with good travel, and a backlit keyboard, (in that order) but I would be willing to compromise on any/all of those 3.

Everything else is good to have, but not necessary for me.

Im a premed student who used a Dell Inspiron 13 5000 Series 2-in-1 for 1.5 yrs (which I liked) until it just stopped charging during the middle of finals. Bought (and am currently using) an HP Stream 14 the next day just to tide me over.

    Which Mac?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 03:48 AM PDT

Before anyone says that mac computers are overpriced and that I should instead build a pc, calm down. I know that Mac computers are not the best computers you can get for what you are actually paying. So let me explain why a Mac computer. I'm actually not that into gaming on pc, I usually play on consoles. I use my current pc to work (pretty much every computer can run the programs I use properly), and I travel a lot, so the new pc I get must be a laptop. But, why a Mac? Well, I somehow convinced my dad to buy me a laptop, but on the condition that it has to be a Mac computer (because almost every other laptop he's bought has broken after a year or two of use, therefore he thinks MacBooks last waaaay longer)

So after the really long explanation here are my options. I don't want him to spend that much money, so my two options are the 2017 MacBook which has an intel core i5 seventh gen that runs at 1.4 GHz and has Turbo Boost up to 3.6 GHz. This one has Intel HD gaphics 615. With an SSD of 256 GB.

My second option is the MacBook Pro 13" which has an intel Core i5 seventh hen which runs at 2.3 GHz and has turbo boost up to 3.6 GHz. This one has intel HD graphics 640. With a SSD of 128 GB.

Both of this PCs have 8 gigs of ram ddr3. And both are at the same price.

As I said before, I don't really play really demanding games on PC. I use it more to get my work done, and both of this PCs will do that great. If I get to play a game, it'll be Lol or a game as demanding as lol, so I don't really need that much of a powerful PC. Also, this would be a pretty straightforward desition, as the MacBook Pro is clearly more powerful than the MacBook 12". But I prefer way more the MacBooks 12" design, as its ultra lightweight, plus it has way better colors than the silver one of the MacBook Pro. Also, I'm considering that GeForce Now will hopefully come out the next couple years, so if it does, I'll pay it to play more demanding games,

So what do you say? Considering that they're the same price and the use I'll give to it (mainly for work, not that requiring of performance) which one should I get? The 12" MacBook that I think is way better designed and that would be better and lighter for when I travel, but is slightly less powerful compared to the MacBook Pro, or the MacBook Pro which's design I don't really like, but is slightly better in performance. Thanks for your help!!

    Posted: 02 Oct 2018 02:41 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1200-1600 € , max max 1800 € , Hungary
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specification, battery life not so important for me
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Important but not the main point, specification/price more important. However this is more important than battery life.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Still thinking between 15" and 17", if possible would prefer 17"
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**A Gaming: CS:GO, PUBG, Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm okay with low-mid settings but would prefer atleast 80-90 FPS. Most critical point is PUBG.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Colored keyboard would be cool. Also 144Hz sounds cool but i'm not sure is it noticable better than 120 Hz.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thinking about GTX1060 or GTX1070 with i7 8750H just dont really know which is the best option. Price difference is quite much between these video cards and for PUBG GTX1070 maybe necessary but i'm not sure. Until now from what i found ASUS ROG laptops looks the best for me. (Strix Scar II and TUF). Also a 256 gb SSD would be cool with atleast 1TB HDD.

    Try to solve this one...

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 08:04 PM PDT

Yet another Suggestion Puzzle for you all to solve.

I'm looking for a Laptop with these nuanced parameters:

    • Portability: Thin & Light
    • Touchscreen
    • Backlit Keyboard
      (Bonus: Page Up/Down + Home/End Keys)
    • >= 2 USB Ports

Upgrading from a Acer Aspire V5 that I mindlessly bought in 2012, which possess all these conveniences I've grown to be very fond of.

Price, Detachable, Clam, 2-in-1..it doesn't matter - if it meets the criteria, it's a highly prospective candidate.

    Let's see what we get.

Going into college next year, looking for laptop to survive 4 years of engineering/computer science

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 08:07 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

    ~$2,000 in the United States

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I prefer good battery life and specs, but will take advice on what features would be nice to have for college

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Will most likely carry it around a fair amount, so can't be too heavy or big.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    ~13-15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Possibly CAD, but I think I'll have a desktop around for that. Light gaming like CIV, and amateur photo editing.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Civ, and other strategy games. ~60 fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I would like to have SSD as the primary/only drive. Should have a good keyboard. Not sure if I want touch screen, so anyone with experience please offer advice!

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Will be taking any recommendations that people have for what a laptop should have for college.

Would this Omen be worth it over a Dell G5?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 07:40 PM PDT

I came across this open box Omen from Microcenter for $934(USD) just as I was about to pull the trigger on the Dell G5 I5-8300 and was wonder at this price point which one would be better?

    The Omen: http://www.microcenter.com/product/507831/OMEN_15-dc0051nr_156_Gaming_Laptop_Computer_-_Black

    or Dell G5: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CD3MRZF/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

I know the G5 is highly recommended through out but at this price drop for the Omen it looks like it is the better deal overall. Please let me know, thank you!

Looking for PC replacement... sort of

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 07:12 PM PDT

Hi. I'm selling my 4790K, 1440p 1080Ti rig because the lack of space ATM. I'm planning to build a brand new system in the next 1-2 years maybe, but meanwhile I need a PC replacement.

I've searched through laptops, and seems like 1440p is not mainstream yet. 4K displays with GTX 1080 and 120Hz sounds nonsense to me, as I was struggling to get 90FPS on some games with Ultra graphics on 1440p and a 1080Ti.

So I'm aiming at a laptop with 1080p display, G-Sync, 120-144Hz, 250-512GB SSD/ NVMe, 1-2TB HDD and a GTX 1070, so I can connect it to my 1440p display to run Windows on 2K and play games at 1080p on Ultra to get those 120 FPS.

Although, if my display has 165Hz, and a laptop 120Hz, the G-Sync feature will be used on the external display, right? By using the internal laptop GPU...?

Also, 17.3" or more would be great, but I'm not too sure if the difference between the 15.7" is that big... Asus Scar looks great and I'm not disappointed by MSI so far. And I'd prefer to avoid very bulky laptops, like the fat MSI VR editions.

    Cheers beforehand.

$300-600 USA Laptop for programming and occasional movie/youtube streaming, would be great if touch screen + able to write notes

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 07:06 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Looking <$500 USD. USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Don't know what this really means. It would be great if I can turn it pretty much into a tablet and takes notes on it really easily too (using a stylus or something).

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Light is good, not the most important thing but I prefer lighter.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. No MAC, I have never used Chrome OS or Linux but am open to it.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No. MAYBE some video/photo editing, but doubting it.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No games.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Should be reliable build quality, I heard SSD are good so I would like that. I do programming/machine learning and run algorithms on my device.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would like it to be a device that is light weight and I can take written (stylus) notes on as well, basically something I could use whether on my desk or keep it beside me in bed to write on.

    2 in 1 laptop showdown?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 07:00 PM PDT

Hi there! I'm currently looking for a laptop with a touch screen and stylus support, preferably a 2 in 1. I will be using it for digital art and light gaming.

I am currently torn between a Lenovo Yoga 720, Hp x360, and the Dell xps 15 2 in 1. I've researched alot and I keep coming back to these three so I would most like a comparison between the three, but I am also open to any other suggestions.

The most intensive game I play is World of Warcraft so being able to run that is a plus. Not too picky about anything else, it will mostly be used at home or with an external charger so battery is not an issue. Budget is 2k but I'd love to stay as low as possible.

    Thanks!

    Looking to spend 600-1000

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 06:58 PM PDT

$600-$1000, no origin specific Not looking to go overboard on something but need it to be worth the cost

Need good battery life Don't care about a 2-in-1 that much, would possibly prefer to not have it

    Weight and Thinness not important

    Windows

Screen size 15 or 17 inches Something to easily be able to see what's on the screen

Will be doing CAD and using other programs for civil engineering This is an important factor, needs to be able to handle some semi-beefy programs

    Not much of a gamer

would prefer to have an HP or a Dell

What's the catch with this deal? ASUS FX503VM for $764.10

    Posted: 01 Oct 2018 09:33 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 800$ USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. N/A

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Less weight would be nice. Thinness doesn't matter

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows/Linux

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? dota2/cs;go. Some high end games like monster hunter world. Upcoming DMC5. 60 fps on low would be nice

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A

ASUS FX503VM 15.6" 120Hz FHD, i5-7300HQ 2.5GHz , GTX 1060 3GB, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, 8GB DDR4. It was for $764.10. I understand compared to g3/g5, processor is 7th gen and graphic card is 3gb version. But it has 120hz screen would that offset those downsides? I heard that g5 have bad screen and card is max q version. I saw fps comparison on notebookcheck and it was almost similar on witcher etc (just 1-3 fps). Also cpu benchmarks had only 20% difference (People said difference is almost double). Should i grab it for this price?

My budget is 800$ and i just play dota/cs;go but i want to be able to play some high end games next year as well. Just wanted something with 1060 and found this on amazon warehouse.

Also on 9/26 dell outlets had sitewide 14% sale and i grabbed g5 with 1060 for 730$ but dell canceled my order. So i thought maybe 1060 might be reachable in my budget.

Pick or include any that apply.** Best specifications for the money, and a basic laptop form works just fine. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I don't have any books, so weight is a non-issue, as long as I can get it places. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** Windows. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** At least 15' * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I intend to run several games, including the AAA ones. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** I want as close to ultra as I can get, at 120 fps. * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** 120 hz screen * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I notice that several laptops at my price point have a gtx 1080 with a 7th gen i7, or a 1070 with an 8th gen. Should I prefer the former?
