In a world of 1000$ phones, I find happiness in my 100$ baby from Xiaomi

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 02:40 AM PDT

About two years ago, back when I was in college, I set out to buy my first smartphone. Yeah, during those day, I was financially down and had to save my money for a long time to even afford a basic smartphone. Xiaomi had released a new smartphone back then, the Redmi 3s Prime which I managed to grab at Rs. 8500 (around 120$). That seemed like a bang for the buck back then, but 2 years down the line, I am blown away by the experience that Xiaomi has offered.

First, the most amazing thing about the phone, the 4100 mAh battery! Gives me 10+ hours of SOT (the 720p display helps) and I have to charge it up once every two or three days. The screen size is five inches which is very ideal for me, and it has a headphone jack! There is a fingerprint sensor, dual sim card slot, every kind of sensor that should be on a high end smartphone, plenty of megapixels in the camera, plenty of RAM and even an IR remote! Came with MIUI which I did like but eventually replaced with a custom ROM and now, I am running android Pie on it (with about more than 7 Pie ROMs available on XDA for this device). The Gcam ports run flawlessly, I get great shots for my Instagram, and crisp portrait mode too. The phone is buttery smooth, no lag even after 2 years, I can play Pubg on it, can have multiple apps open without any lag at all. It does not mention waterproofing anywhere but I have used it under the rain a few times and it still runs flawlessly. The metal body is solid, and has held up to plenty of falls from plenty of heights on plenty of hard surfaces.

I am not reviewing the phone here, there is no point in that since the phone is not sold anymore. I am thanking Xiaomi here for the amazing work it has done bringing high end phones to low end markets. I know Xiaomi has been going towards smaller batteries, removing the headphone jack, prolonging the bootloader unlock time, and such things which really make me sad. Xiaomi is a phone enthusiasts playground. They should stick to the basics which have earned them the reputation that they have. I am happy that they have the Pocophone which is much like the old Xiaomi.

Today, I have managed to get a job and can afford a pricier phone but I am sticking to my baby as long as it breathes.

Tip to alternate between two apps

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 10:53 AM PDT

TIL that you can hold on to that side swipe and pull it longer in full screen gestures to switch between the two most recent apps. Just a thing I found and sharing it in case some of you didn't notice it.

MIUI 10 looks beautiful but is laggy as hell on my Redmi Note 5 pro 6GB

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 02:06 PM PDT

Woke up this morning with an updated phone. Since I didn't follow the development of MIUI 10 I honestly didn't know about it. The UI and the improvements are great. MIUI 10 looks amazing and doesn't have to hide behind iOS 12. That being said, where iOS 12 is lightning fast and saved some of my older iOS devices from retirement, MIUI 10 is laggy as hell. Animations lag, apps lag, the launcher lags, damn even GEarth which was blazing on MIUI 9 is now a Slideshow. I'm disappointed. Can I go back?

Going off silent mode after a night sleep will set the ringer to low

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 08:55 PM PDT

I'm on MIUI 10 global now. I thought it would finally be fixed but it's not. Every time I set it to silent then take it off, if I do it at night and wake up in the morning, it will set the volume to low. So I have to go in and manually set the volume high again myself. It will not return to the last volume setting. Now on 10, the problem is even worse because the volume buttons no longer affect the ringer, it affects the media volume. So now I have to go intot he menu to manually set the ringer high. It's TWICE as annoying now. This is one of the stupidest bugs ever and they won't fix it.

Also if I do it right now and take it off, the volume goes back to the last setting. It only bugs when it's overnight or I assume, set that way for a long period of phone idle.

Does any of you know what I'm talking about and the solution to it?

Downgrade from MIUI 10 beta to MIUI 9 stable (whyred)

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 04:37 PM PDT

Hey, I currently have MIUI 10 beta installed on my Redmi Note 5 AI (locked bootloader, on a 720h wait), and I'm interested in downgrading to MIUI 9 stable while the MIUI 10 stable isn't available. Do I have to worry about anti rollback in this case? Or are there any guides I can follow?

    Thanks

Charging Xiaomi with Motorola Turbo Charger?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 08:10 PM PDT

As title says. I recently bought a Redmi Note 5 and now that my Moto X Play is obsolete for use is his charger any good?

Also is QC bad for the battery? Saw mixed answers on the internet.

5 Plus Global on .eu rom. Only way to control playback is to exit the video, and reopen the app itself through my app window. Anyone else had this issue?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 07:05 PM PDT

I'm in the process of buying my first xiaomi device. Since last week, I did all my research and my 3 final choices seems to be 1) mi a2 2) mi a2 lite and 3) pocophone f1 and MAYBE the mi 8 (explorer edition ( but pricey ) or base ). I'm wondering if I should keep my research only on amazon or there's other options to look at? like aliexpress? is there a legit xiaomi seller in ali ? a good store for global version. I'm looking for a phone that work well with 4g lte in canada.

    Max price ( in CAD $ ) 400-450ish

Play a lot a pokemon go. Browse a lot of insta/reddit/forum/facebook. Pokemon quest. A lot of emulator, etc. Need a minimum of 32-64gb .

    Is it really that huge.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 09:05 AM PDT

So, as everybody else probably, I have been thinking about getting the POCO.

At this time Im still using a Redmi 4X, which is a 5 inch phone.

In comparison - how "big" of a difference will it be for me? I guess it will be a huge one, i'm just extremely worried that I never get used to it.

Are there any small bezel-less phones coming out?

Help with unbricking a Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 (whyred)

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 12:11 PM PDT

I did a mistake. I flashed a previous version of MIUI on my phone with the result of bricking the phone. My PC sees my phone as a COXX so it's in EDL but when I try flashing a ROM an error pops up saying: Could not receive hello packet. Can anyone please help me?
