Posted: 24 Sep 2018 03:05 AM PDT Hi, I need a selection of ultrabooks I can use for programming. List of things I might be doing with the laptop 1) Photo/ Video Editing 2) Programming 3) Web Development 4) School 5) Netflix no gaming. I have a desktop for that. Preferably something futureproof. Currently I'm looking at Razer Blade Stealth 512gb.. Budget wise: 2200USD OS: Windows Storage: HDD/SSD min 500gb [link] [comments] |
15" well rounded laptop for coding. Posted: 24 Sep 2018 01:48 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: 1000$ maximum, Israel. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs, I don't care so much for batter life. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not so important. Which OS do you require? I'll install Linux. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15". Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Very occasional gaming. If I can run the newest games on the lowest quality I'll be satisfied. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No specific requirements Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I need a laptop but I'm not going to travel with it every day so battery and weight are less of an issue for me. Mainly, I would like a reliable, future proof laptop (that will last for many years) and maybe run the occasional game, video processing, or vm with too much of a hassle. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Laptop for coding and occasional gaming (Fortnite) Posted: 23 Sep 2018 11:27 PM PDT I'm looking for a laptop to do the programming and also I would like to be able to play some Fortnite on the side. I need to carry the laptop with me so it should be fairly portable. I'd prefer 16 gb of ram. Battery life is also quite important for me. Don't like plastic laptops so build quality is also a must. Budget 2000-2500 USD. Please suggest something. [link] [comments] |

XPS15 Alternatives? 15X? Zephyrus? Posted: 24 Sep 2018 12:29 AM PDT
I own a PC with a 970 that I want to leave behind. I current have a Dell 7537 that works for my old games (Rimworld/Into the Breach) and is OK for work. The best thing about this is the Full HD 15.6 panel (good colours too i think) and the fan is basically non-existent. When running any of the games I know it can run, you can't hear the fan. I recently tried the Razer Blade 14 and loved it, however the fan seemed to boot up to LOUD when gaming. I was looking in to the Recoil II from PCSpecialist however I've seen a video online and the fans are SUPER loud. The latest XPS 15 (i7/1050Ti) looks brilliant too (fan noise) however price wise I can get the Zephyrus M for a slight difference and it's a HUGE upgrade. Thoughts from anybody? Really struggling here!! Edit:

<£900 15" Light Gaming Laptop for University - UK Posted: 24 Sep 2018 01:13 AM PDT
Hi guys, Essentially I'm undertaking a masters course this year, and would really love some advice on getting a new laptop! However, I'm going to be travelling frequently to be visiting my SO during a lot of the year, and as a result, I'd like a laptop that can push reasonable/playable fps on light games, such as football manager, and WoW. For this reason, I'm thinking a 1050 would be great, but I'm not adverse to upgrading to a 1050ti, or even 1060 if the deal is good! Also, because it's predominantly for University work, I don't want a "Gamer laptop" with grills and racing red emblazoned across it. I also would like one with at least 5 hours battery life if I'm not playing games. Thanks for you [link] [comments] |

So for these reason, plus the promise of warranties and being able to pick something up near-immediately, I've mostly resorted to Best Buy. Alright, so here's what we're looking at right now. Current lead, Best Buy on sale ($600 CAD): HP 15.6" Touchscreen Laptop -Natural Silver (Intel Core i5-8250U/1TB HDD/8GB RAM/Windows 10. No SSD, but has what we're looking for otherwise. Exception to the Amazon markup rule: Asus F510UA-AH51 VivoBook FHD Laptop, Intel Core i5-8250U, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, NanoEdge Display, Windows 10 Star Gray Acer Swift 14" Laptop - Silver (Intel Core i5-8250U/16GB Optane/1TB HDD/8GB RAM/Windows 10) These two are outside of the price range but appealing because of the SSDs:https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/asus-vivobook-15-6-laptop-grey-intel-core-i5-8250u-256gb-ssd-8gb-ram-windows-10/12600851.aspx? Acer Aspire 5 15.6" Laptop - Black (Intel Core i5-8250U/256GB SSD/8GB RAM/Windows 10) Let me know if you'd like any clarifications please! Will an SSD upgrade benefit me? Posted: 24 Sep 2018 04:13 AM PDT I have a laptop running on a Intel Celeron N3450 and as storage it has an eMMC with this performance. It has a slot for SSD upgrade (M.2 SATA 2242), but I'm not sure if a proper SSD would make much of a difference considering the slow CPU. My workload consists in developing (Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Firefox for Google and SO) and remoting to desktop pc for the heavy stuff. [link] [comments] |
My place got robbed. Need a new laptop on the cheap for school. Posted: 23 Sep 2018 02:24 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $300. Trying to save money is pretty important for me right now, so Im trying to keep cost down as much as possible. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Ideally Id be able to use my laptop all day and have a semi decent screen. I dont really care about performance. How important is weight and thinness to you? Could care less so long as it isn't bigger than a PC. Its going to sit in my backpack for longer periods of time so I'd like it to be as light as possible. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Ideally I like windows, but I am open to chrome os. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. sometimes gaming but not too often. its really not too important to me If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? easy running games like hallow knight. nothing too extreme Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build is the biggest thing. Good keyboard would be nice. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Im a student and my house was robbed so I lost my MacBook pro. I am more concerned with having something with decent reliability than anything else. Honestly I just want to be able to run f.lux so my eyes dont burn out haha. To me, lightness and the computers ability to be shoved into my backpack is key. after that I just watch a lot of netflix and thats pretty much it [link] [comments] |

Posted: 24 Sep 2018 02:32 AM PDT Hey guys! So i just bought an asus vivobook following the quickpick guide. I ve read that windows defender is a good standalone antivirus, so i thought to unistall all the bloatware antiviruses that came with the laptop and just leave it working alone. Is it ok in your opinion or should i install some other free antivirus like avast or avg to work coupled with windows defender? Thank you [link] [comments] |
Photoshop & Music Production Laptop: $2600 Posted: 23 Sep 2018 04:31 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $2600 Max, America How important is weight and thinness to you? Aesthetic is quite important to me: i.e. I would never buy a ROG series laptop because it's super tacky. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows & preferably able to run Windows 7 or 8 (I am strongly opposed to windows 10) Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Between 14 to 16 *Screen quality & display is paramount: I would highly prefer an accurate sRGB and RGB (100% if possible and if not, over 90%). Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Heavy Photoshop & Music Production. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Ideally for the price point it would have reliable build quality & function. However, reliable and laptop seem to be a misnomer (even at high pp) Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been overclocking my mind all day between: Aero Gigabyte 15x: Beautiful aesthetic and proper specs on paper but tons of negative reports concerning driver issues & QC. Basically it feels like I'll have to tweak it out of box and even then, there are no assurances that it will function properly (gamble). I should also mention that Gigabyte specifically stated to me that the Aero 15x does not officially support windows 8/8,1 (this was really unfortunate). However, gentechpc apparently has the option to install Windows 7... not sure how tried-and-true this is. Sager-np8375: Decent aesthetic and great specs but I'm really not familiar with the Sager/Clevo brand (their support, warranty, QC etc...). Furthermore, I've not seen too much information about them (good or bad). There was a thread on reddit where someone stated that their son's np8375 was overheating consistently (up to 100C) which is the max apparently and still continued to go above 95C after they purchased a laptop cooling pad/fan. However, this individual also stated that If you disable Intel SpeedStep then temps are not a problem. So, I'm not sure how much of an issue or concern that really is. XMG PRO 17: Foreign brand that I know little to nothing about except that I enjoy the aesthetic of this particular model. Obviously, I wouldn't purchase on this premise alone but the spec's seem well-rounded too. With that said, it seems impossible to have shipped to the US. what do you guys think? [link] [comments] |

Looking for a durable laptop for college! Posted: 23 Sep 2018 07:25 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Canada – would like to keep it under $700 CAD max, but cheaper would be very nice. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I really have no need of 2-in-1. I'd like a balance between: · Good Battery Life · Good enough performance to seamlessly run 1080p video / do office work / keep a hundred tabs open on chrome / do coding work · Durability is a MUST and probably the most important. How important is weight and thinness to you? Fairly important, but I'd rather have performance and durability rather than weight and thinness. As long as it's not a brick I'm more than satisfied. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows would be great. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Between 12-16 inches. Again, a balance between portability and performance. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. To be honest I'd rather have a laptop that can't run games very well; I'll be doing some coding but if I can game on it it'll prove to be a distraction. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touhpad)? Having USB ports / headphone jack / video port to connect to projector would be nice. Otherwise durability is a must. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Just looking for a durable laptop; all the performance I need is to be able to do schoolwork without hindrance for the next couple years at least. I have a bad habit of keeping a ton of tabs open on chrome so at least 8 gigs of RAM may be nice. Durability would be amazing. I'm pretty clumsy and I'd expect to drop the laptop several times over its lifespan. If you can find all of these for less than $700, please, YES. Cheaper the better. Trying to keep as much of my savings for actual tuition / living expenses! [link] [comments] |

Laptop for computational/simulation use Posted: 23 Sep 2018 07:07 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $800-1400, Purchasing in the USA Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the $. Want 16 GB ram min. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important Which OS do you require? No preference. Do you have a preferred screen size? Have a 13" right now, have used 15" before. Both are fine. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No CAD/gaming. Programs mainly Mathematica, Python, Matlab, SCALE. Manipulation of 50-100GB datasets, etc If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build is big for me. Would like it to last a bit. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm currently looking at a refurbished XPS 13 2-in-1 that I found for sub 900$, but its got a dual core 7th Gen i7-7Y75 Processor, not sure how much of an impact it would have on heavy computational use. I do have access to a cluster though, so the laptop doesn't have to handle everything on its own. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Lightweight laptop for development ~ $600 Posted: 23 Sep 2018 02:04 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $600 Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? While battery life is very important to me, I need certain specifications that outweigh battery life. How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is very important, I would prefer not to exceed 4.5lbs, I'm fine with smaller screen sizes. Which OS do you require? Preferably not Mac, but I can do any. Do you have a preferred screen size? Preferably I'd like 13, but I can compromise Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I plan on using Unity2D to build games, as well as build Mobile Apps through something like Android Studio. The only game I would play would likely be Hearthstone. I will likely stay away from Photoshop or any Video/Photo editing on the machine. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Really only Hearthstone and other programs that are less intensive than that. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? The build is very important, I will try to be extra careful but I can be clumsy, so I'd like it to be well build. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'd really like an SSD, even if its only 128GB or so and I hear that 8GB RAM is important for Unity. I plan on mainly using this laptop for development work (Unity or Mobile Apps) and Hearthstone. So far I really like the ASUS VivoBook F510UA, but I want an SSD, and would prefer not to pay an extra $120 for it. I also found a refurbished ASUS UX301LA that seems good, but I am a little weary of getting a refurbished computer. [link] [comments] |
