Replacing macOS with Linux on my 12inch MacBook

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 10:55 AM PDT

I'm looking into the option of replacing the OS on my macbook with a version to Linux. I have experience using Linux in the past and since the macbook is kinda starting to struggle with the newest macOS versions I'd rather use Linux as the OS. I have already goolged some stuff and found this guide. Are there things I should be aware of and is it even worth doing at all? Here are the specs of my macbook

Hope you guys can help me, I'll be going through the comments and answering questions in like a couple of hours. (am currently at a family event)

    Differences between package managers

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 03:14 AM PDT

I'm not quite a noob but I'm a bit afraid to post this on r/Linux :D

I've been using Linux for years now in many different flavours with different package managers. Apt, yum, dnf, pacman and even ports on mac. However, I don't understand the point of people pointing out "distro a is sooo much better than b because of package manager c". All I really do with the package managers anyway is "install", "upgrade" and the occasional "search". All those functions are basically the same in all package managers I used. True, I prefer dnf over apt because of their delta rpms which is quite neat. But otherwise all of them behave exactly the same.

    What am I missing?

Interested in making the leap, but some software holds me back.

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 04:33 AM PDT

Firstly, I have tried dual booting in the past. Regardless of computer speed in loading, it was just an annoyance. Finished playing my game and then I have to reboot to get to Firefox. Ok, so I install Firefox on Windows 10 for quickness and before you know it, I'm using it full time.

So ideally I want to deep dive and chin off Windows. But there are some software which I use daily which would be hard to give up.

Keyboard & Mouse Software - I use software for my corsair keyboard and Steelseries mouse. While the former isn't critical, the latter is, for shortcuts, profile switching and games. Onedrive - I always have (and am paying for) Onedrive. This obviously keeps things backed up nice, so if there is any possibility of running this on Manjaro (which I am aiming for since I have used previously) that would help.

Gaming - With the developments of Proton, things are coming along nicely. I wish I could find video evidence of Arma 3 running with Proton however.

Antivirus/Malwarebytes - My Malwarebytes is due to run out soon. Is there any alternative or perhaps even a non requirement for Linux?

Apologies for the dumb questions, no doubt I will have more.

Cursor theme only works in certain applications

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 10:06 AM PDT

I'm using arch labs which uses OpenBox WM & tint2 for panels etc. The tool that came with it to change cursor is the xfce4 mouse software where there's a mouse cursor theme tab. I changed my cursor to this: https://www.gnome-look.org/p/999951/ but it only works in Firefox & some other applications, but not on the desktop or when hovering over the panel etc.

I'm thinking this has to do with xorg?

Brand new to linux, want to get started working towards my CCENT

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 09:49 PM PDT

Hello. I have lightly dabbled in linux before, but am very new to the CLI and have just begun learning it

I have a basic level of proficiency in python (not even sure how much that matters), and have begun reading Odom textbooks on the basics of networking etc.

I've downloaded Cisco packet tracer and will begin dabbling in that in the next few days as well.

My questions are; how similar are the linux CLI and Cisco IOS? is it worth learning one before the other, or are there enough similarities that I can work through them in tandem? Any recommendations on learning materials for linux CLI? I have a raspberry pi, so I'll probably boot that up to learn.

    Thanks for stopping by friends.

Need help Installing Linux mint 19 cinnamon 64 bit on my other 1tb HDD, while keeping windows 10 on my ssd.

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 12:23 PM PDT

-Hi everyone, I've been trying to install Linux on my second 1tb hdd (which is formatted) as I'm looking to try it out.

-I've used rufus to create a boot of linux on my 16gb usb drive and have removed my ssd to avoid wipping my data by mistake while attempting to install linux but when I boot into the bootable usb I'm greeted with the linux logo with a countdown then some console text and a blue/black screen which doesn't change unless I restart my pc then I'm just greeted by the BIOS again.

-Any Ideas on how I could fix this and succesfully install Linux? Cheers.

-Also I followed this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xw__bTvQKsY to try install Linux on my second HDD

-My specs are MSI B350 pc mate, 8gb of RAM, Ryzen 5 CPU

    Arch linux problems

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 09:28 AM PDT

Hey guys, I wanna install arch on my PC,(dual boot with windows) but I can't seem to get past installing grub. I don't have sys logs but I tried twice following the Arch Linux install guide. Both times attempting to install grub I get stuck with can not find efi folder or Target directory doesn't look like an efi. I have 2 storage devices, both nvmessd, 1 for Windows, and hopefully one with arch. I have tried to make an efi (or esp I can't remember what the guide had called it) partition with 500mb type esp boot via cf disk. I had a total of 3 partitions, a root, a swap, and the efi. It wasn't at the start of the drive (bit 2048) reading about grub and efis, shouldn't the bootloader be installed within the first 512 bits of the drive? Sorry if what I'm saying isn't proper or doesn't make sense I'm still new to the Arch scene. If anyone can point me into a graphical updated step by step video I can try, or can write steps or point me into the direction of a step by step guide other than the install wiki(didn't work) or has a fix or knows what I am doing wrong it is very much appreciated, thanks!

Do GNU tools make up distros?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 02:30 AM PDT

On a basic level, the Linux OS is simply the Linux kernel with GNU tools that make it actually function. Are different distros just modifications of those GNU tools? If so, what was the first distribution called when the original Linux kernel and GNU tools first merge?

Linux-Zen kernel doesn't boot, Arch Linux.

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 04:22 AM PDT

Hey guys. I made a terrible post yesterday and I'm truly sorry for the lack of information I provided. I uploaded a picture and the post via the reddit app and was unsure how it'd post (I'm not the most frequent reddit user) so I'm sorry. Anyways, here's my problem:

I installed linux-zen (https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/linux-zen/) and linux-zen-headers (https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/linux-zen-headers/) from the AUR using yaourt, and they successfully installed. Then I updated the grub with this command: sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg . Then when I reboot and go to the advanced options of my grub loader, I select the linux-zen option and proceed to boot. All I'm getting is a flickering _ (img: https://imgur.com/a/ZnK6KlE) after what seemed to be a pretty normal boot process? (in the video not only the flickering _ is showing but also started hostname service?)

YouTube video demonstrating issue (sorry for ambient sound): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjMVusBo2OM&feature=youtu.be

GPU: GTX 1070 (nvidia proprietary drivers)
CPU: i7 4790K OC to 4.6ghz (intel microcode, proprietary I suppose?)
RAM: Corsair DDR3 1600mhz overvolt and tightened timings
    MOBO: MSi Z97-S02
    SSD: Samsung 840 Evo 250GB & KINGSTON SHFS37A120G 120GB
    HDD: TOSHIBA DT01ACA300 3TB
OS: Linux Arch Labs (Based on arch linux) https://archlabslinux.com/

I use lightDM but choose the option of automatic login during the archlabs install.

Other than that my system is working flawlessly, just want to try out this kernel. Thanks in advance!

Laptop running on Lubuntu 18.04 stuttering although specs are optimal.

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 08:43 AM PDT

I have an old laptop with a core i3 first gen dual core, 2 cores, 4 threads and 2.5 ghz base clock with 2gb of DDR3 ram. I also have a slow and old 500gb hard drive. I ran lubuntu a few months ago and it ran perfectly and didnt Stutter. Now i installed lubuntu again and it is Stuttering like crazy. Its unusable at this point. I checked with task manger and it showed that cpu usage was no more than 3-10% and 500mb ram was free. I tried installing ubuntu on it and it still stuttered. I installed xubuntu and it still stuttered.

Tldr: laptop running lubuntu 18.04 stutters even though it has low cpu and ram usage. Tried different flavours of u ubuntu and they still stuttered. Thank you!

    storage issues

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 08:42 AM PDT

got a bunch of 4.8GB mkv files I want to watch on a smart tv, but im unsure how to proceed as my usb is fat formatted

    I figure my options are

    1)switch out the filesystem

2)reduce the quality of the videos

    3) split them in half

for the first option, I have no idea what filesystems the tv will recognise, so I think im stuck with fat, (also what video formats itl play, if anyone knows what common formats smart tv's generally play that be great inf too)

the second option I have no clue what to do, and would like to reduce just minimally to fit in 4 gb

the third option I think I can do with openshot right?

running linux mint if that matters, any suggestions appreciated

    Live Boot Freezing

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:37 PM PDT

I have tried to live boot via usb Lubuntu, Bodhi Linux, and Linux Mint. Each load all the way to the desktop, then freeze. The mouse still moves all over the screen, but I cannot click on anything. I want to install Linux on said laptop (I'm somewhat familiar with Linux) but this has me stumped. Any suggestions? It's a Dell Inspiron 11 3180 with Windows 10.

Performance and battery life worse after installing Bumblebee

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:35 PM PDT

I was originally getting about 6hrs on my laptop that probably should have been getting at least 7 or 8, but now I'm getting closer to 4.5 which is pretty much unacceptable. I read somewhere that having a discrete gpu like the mx 150 in my laptop can negatively impact battery life, so I decided to install Bumblebee using this guide. Is there any way I can adjust the settings of this program, and if not, how do I remove it from my system?

How to Create Ubuntu, Linux OS Bootable USB in Windows

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 11:27 AM PDT

A bootable Ubuntu USB is very useful for multiple reasons. If you are a Windows user and thinking to migrate to Linux, you can experience Ubuntu desktop/Linux desktops without hampering your PC configuration or installation using a Live USB stick. Also using this, you can boot from the USB stick directly from an Internet Cafe or any borrowed computer. Not only that, if you have a broken system you can always use the USB stick to boot from and repair the broken system/recover data.

Here are the steps to follow to create a bootable Ubuntu USB from Microsoft Windows.

    Really bad gaming performances

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:34 AM PDT

    Hey r/linux4noobs,

I switched recently from windows 7 to Ubuntu 18.04.1 since I got a problem with Windows 3days ago.

    My pc is a brebuilt with nVidia GTX 660, i5 2320 6GO of ram & 2TB HDD

I used to have 150+ fps on game such Trackmania, ~80 on The Elder scrolls Online, i've been told that i'll lose about 10 to 20% of the performances if I go on Linux. Whatever, I did. After installing games with PlayOnLinux, what was my surprise when I couldn't even get 20fps on Trackmania. Most article online tells you to install your nVidia drivers, so I looked after my nVidia drivers, but it seems that their are updated (nVidia drivers 396)

So here I am, wondering what's going on? why is it so bad? Did I miss something when I was installing Linux?

    Thanks for reading.

How can I use wget to save full Reddit threads?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 06:25 PM PDT

I have been trying for the last four hours to scrounge through various subreddits and help files and wget and praw (with limited python knowledge) and even HTTTrack to download a reddit comment thread + all the links in the comments. I've banged my head against the wall.

What I'm trying to do is to download all the comments on this page NSFW LINK: https://www.reddit.com/r/NSFW411/comments/7ldxey/meta_the_most_common_requests_at_nsfw411and_their/

    However using wget -E -H -k -p https://www.reddit.com/r/NSFW411/comments/7ldxey/meta_the_most_common_requests_at_nsfw411and_their/

just takes me to the redirect page (the front page) and won't download the comments/posts on that page, and not the comments+comment links from the target page.

I'm trying to assemble data on representation and organizational hierarchy for my next book project--my first book project was on the history of obscenity and pornography, which you can see from my various AMAs.

    Edit: Solved!

    Code is:

    wget --no-cookies --header "Cookie: over18=1" -E -H -k -p -r -l1 https://old.reddit.com/r/NSFW411/comments/7ldxey/meta_the_most_common_requests_at_nsfw411and_their/
