Which Windows laptops can contest with Macbook Pro 13"? Posted: 02 Sep 2018 08:56 AM PDT I really like the build quality and I wonder if there anything similar in the Windows segment. I find a lot of windows laptops clumsy with cheap build quality and other cons. [link] [comments]
XPS 15 9570 - very disappointed Posted: 02 Sep 2018 08:51 AM PDT Hello everyone. I wanted to share with you my experience with the Dell XPS 15 9570. I bought it last week with the following specs: 4K display, i5-8300H, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD. I will start from what I liked: - build quality is very good, haven't noticed any flaws, besides maybe too tight USB ports and VERY tight power button - display. one of the main reasons I bought this laptop. I heard that it is awesome and that is 100% true, it's just beautiful - track pad. one of the best I've ever used on PC (though, macbook is still ages ahead) - temps. I bought i5 model intentionally and I wasn't disappointed. performance is awesome (heck, it's better than previous flagship i7-7700hq) and temps are really good. I was getting around 77C for CPU and around 70C for GPU when I was playing Witcher 3 ... and I think that's it now for the issues/problems... - occasional crackling sounds/short audio interruptions (see this post for more details https://www.dell.com/community/XPS/XPS-9570-Audio-Crackling-and-Popping/td-p/6105798/page/2). this is really BAD - coil whine in headphones. this is really annoying. when you just sitting with your headphones on, without playing music or anything else, you constantly hear a high pitch sound. VERY annoying - poor Windows performance with 4K resolution (see this post for more details https://communities.intel.com/thread/125615). in brief, Windows animation are very laggy, scroll in Chrome is laggy and overall system works really bad/slow, like if you have a Chinese 100$ laptop and not a Dell's flagship, just unacceptable... ... So overall, I got a really good machine with decent performance and nice temps, but those 3 issues I've described make it just unusable. I've already tried everything I could to fix it, but no luck. I'm done with it and I already requested a return (at least I bought it from Microsoft store and it's easy to just return it). To summarize? Be careful when buying this machine, it has SO many problems, just check laptops/dell subreddits, the amount of issues people get are insane. Make sure you buy it from a good store with easy returns. Using 90-W charger on a 130-W laptop, how to speed up performance? Posted: 02 Sep 2018 11:00 AM PDT My 130-W charger no longer charges my laptop, so i bought this universal one for temp use. It chargers my laptop to full, but my laptop always slows down dramatically even at 100% charge. Is there a way to set my computer to automatically work at full performance even if it drains the battery or stops it from charging further? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:48 PM PDT So my family was on holiday without me and the family laptop started to display some weird settings after a few weeks and didnt start windows. So they returned from the holiday and I fixed it but the thing is that the laptop keyboard is not working properly. Only some keys are working and some of the working output different letters. The 'r' key even switches between outputting 't' and 'c'. Do you think it's a hardware issue or something else? And should I even bother to fix it or just get an external keyboard. Thanks in advance and if this isn't the right place to ask I'd appreciate some guidance [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:36 PM PDT Hello all, I have a Dell CPS 15 2 in 1 (9575). I have been noticing that at times, and somewhat frequently, when I use the mouse-pad to click on something, the curser will suddenly move a couple of centimeters to the left or right. This doesn't happen all of the time, but I was wondering if there is a solution to this, and if this a problem that others have experienced as well? I really appreciate it. Thanks [link] [comments]
Good specs but fear of overheating Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:35 PM PDT I found a good deal on an HP laptop, but people say not to buy HP laptops because they tend to overheat and shut down unexpectedly. This laptop really seems to be ideal for my budget and needs, but I'm not sure I should risk it. The model I'm interested in is the HP 15-bs113nv. Here are the specs : Intel Core i7-8550U 1.8 GHz 8MB cache memory 8GB DDR4 2400 SDRAM 256 GB M.2 SSD AMD Radeon 530 4GB DDR3 graphics card memory My second choice is the Dell Inspiron 3567. Here are the specs: Intel Core i7-8550U 1.80 GHz 8MB cache memory 8GB DDR4 SDRAM - 2400 MHz 256GB SSD AMD Radeon 520 2GB graphics card memory I'm a web design student, so I mostly need it for web browsing, Adobe Suite (Photo and video editing), movies streaming and some very light gaming. My budget is limited (600-800€). So, should I risk buying this HP laptop? Other laptop suggestions are welcome! [link] [comments]
Different laptop choices from my XPS 9570 Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:05 PM PDT Hi all, I currently have a Dell XPS 9570. I've had it for about a month now and I've become fed up with some of the issues I've experienced. I loved the laptop up until this point. I can still still return it and purchase something different, so I've come to ask for your advice. I do lots of intensive work with Adobe Suite products as well as intensive games like Overwatch. So this time, I'm thinking something more game oriented, perhaps Asus or MSI? I've heard that these other brands have even worse build quality and control than Dell though. Not entirely sure how accurate this is, but I need your help in this process. Thank you in advance! [link] [comments]
Looking for a laptop for programming, 3d animation, and light gaming (list included) Posted: 02 Sep 2018 12:55 PM PDT I have been looking at many laptops this past week and have narrowed it down to a few:
I've made this list based on certain specifications I believe I need being,
as for the graphics card I don't know much about that. I need to be able to use programs like Unity and Blender and I'll also be using the laptop for light gaming so I'll appreciate any advice on this. Please tell me what you believe which laptop on the list will be good for my needs and I am open to all suggestions! :-) [link] [comments]
Looking for a laptop for college Posted: 02 Sep 2018 12:44 PM PDT Transferring to a University as a mechanical engineering major. Need a light laptop that I will be able to carry everyday in my book bag. Will be riding my bike to school so it needs to be light. Quietness is also important. Don't want everyone to get upset when I pull a turbine engine out of my bag. Must be able to run cad programs like solidworks and autocad. Will also be doing coding like java and c++. Excel and other office programs as well. I will use it for some light gaming on my spare time, but nothing too demanding. My spending range is between $800-$1200. Would like not to spend the full $1200 so if anyone has any deals on the lower end of my price range would be much appreciated. [link] [comments]
2018 HP Omen 15 dc - Keyboard Backlight + Blue Screen Issues Posted: 02 Sep 2018 12:42 PM PDT Hello there, I purchased a 2018 HP Omen 15 dc about a month ago and I'm very impressed with it. However I am experiencing a couple of minor issues. I have the i5 8300H, GTX 1050ti 4GB, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 1TB HDD model. Sometimes, especially when waking from sleep, my keyboard backlight will default to being off. If I turn it on using the function key, it changes to the default multicoloured lighting. Only when I open the Omen command center does it change to my personal setting (dark red static). My second issue has to do with infrequent blue screen Windows crashes that freeze my entire laptop. Sometimes it freezes completely without showing the blue screen. I am running a slight undervolt on the CPU to try and lower the temps, ranging from ~-0.1 to ~-0.15. I have stress tested the undervolt all the way until 0.165, where it was still stable. However I didn't feel confortable running such a "high" undervolt. I'm also running an overclock on the GPU, +190 on the core and +250 on the memory. I have stress tested the system succesfully multiple times at these settings. Adjusting the undervolts and overclocks doesn't seem to change the frequency of the blue screens. Usually they occur after the laptop has been on for 3+ hours, intermittenly gaming, watching videos, streams and sitting idle. It usually crashes when it is under light load (web browsing while watching a YouTube stream was what I was doing before the latest crash). It hasn't crashed whilst under heavy load yet, which seems weird to me. All while plugged in and not running of the battery, I should add. Is anyone else experiencing these issues? Does anyone have any tips for resolving them? Please leave your tips in the comments below! Have a nice day :) [link] [comments]
HP Envy 13t or Lenovo IdeaPad 720s 14" or Lenovo IdeaPad 530s 14" Posted: 02 Sep 2018 08:11 AM PDT I've been searching for a good portable laptop to use for school, for programming and to do some light gaming on and came to the final choices of 3 laptops. I'm mainly thinking about getting the configs with (i7-8550U, MX150, 16 GB RAM, 512GB SSD). When looking through reviews and threads, I found out that HP Envy 13t had a temperature lock at 72°C, throttling the GPU and making gaming quite laggy. I just want to know if the problem still exists or if it has been fixed with a new BIOS update. Everything else seemed fine and that was the only problem that is preventing me from choosing it as a final choice. As for Lenovo IdeaPad 720s 14", it seems to have some problems with thermal issues and "unbearable" fan noises. I just want to know if those problems are so bad to the point of being deal breakers. I also want to know it's battery life compared to that of HP Envy 13t. For Lenovo IdeaPad 530s 14", it's just that I don't have much information on this device. I would like to know if it's battery life is good enough for a full day usage of programming work and web surfing since I heard that the battery got downgraded from 520s. And I also heard that it has poor CPU turbo performance, I would appreciate it if you can clarify this for me too. I would really appreciate if someone can answer these questions for me and clarify things as I need to be very careful with my choice since I might not be able to return the laptop and get another one as I live in a place where it's quite hard to do so. Thanks for the answers in advance. [link] [comments]
Hwmonitor triggering cpu throttling on battery? Posted: 02 Sep 2018 11:11 AM PDT I have noticed that while on battery when I have HWmonitor on the cpu limits itself to .80Ghz, this is on a Dell G7. Anyone know why that is? When the charger is plugged in there is no issue running the program. Thanks! [link] [comments]

Laptop Wireless Drops mid downloads (and games) Posted: 02 Sep 2018 10:51 AM PDT (First reddit post sorry if its somehow formatted wrong) My Laptop is a Dell G7 Got a laptop about a month ago. When I got it I had a problem where all browsers would stop working randomly and not connect to anything. I fixed it by doing something stupid in cmd. Here I am a month later with a different problem that might have just arisen or I may have only just noticed. Way past my return date so hoping to get some help. THE PROBLEM:As I download things my connection seems to randomly drop. This is most viewable on steam since steam has a "display" of how you are downloading things but it is not limited to steam (I randomly get a 10-20 seconds of connection drop in games such as r6s that lags me out and renders the game unplayable) IMAGES: (Image is steam graphs showing my download starting out at my usual very high speed - 30 - and dropping down to 0 and proceeding to be slow after said drop) Things to note (Things I have tried and other stuff):
Any help or advice is appreciated. I need to fix this it's rendering my laptop pretty damn useless and college classes start soon.. Anyone know what Best Buys rules are for shit like this? I opted out of warranty because last time it felt scammy since I never used it and it was expensive as shit but of course I genuinely have problems this time. [link] [comments]
ASUS GL702VM - Good buy for gaming? Posted: 02 Sep 2018 09:22 AM PDT I've been looking for a laptop to use for light gaming (primarily indie games that are exclusively for PC, maybe We Happy Few, the Sims), photo editing (Photoshop) and other general use. A friend of mine is selling an ASUS GL702VM (I'm assuming it's the one I linked?), and I know nothing about what all the specs mean. Not sure how much he wants for it, as it is used, but I know zero about specs and what they all mean and was hoping to be told whether this would be a good buy. ETA: This would normally be way outside my budget (I've been looking at 700-900 USD), so it may be more than I actually need for what I want to do, but I'd like to hear your thoughts. Could you help me choose between these options ? Posted: 02 Sep 2018 05:20 AM PDT All have same specs: i5-8250U, MX150, 256 SSD, 8GB RAM, 1080p IPS screen. What I want to know is which has better battery life, and any known issues.
Budget is $800-1000. Do suggest other options if you think they are better (dGPU not necessary). Thanks [link] [comments]
Laptop keep losing wifi signal Posted: 02 Sep 2018 08:54 AM PDT So my laptop keeps losing its signal quite a lot and will automatically reconnect after a minute or two, what's weird is that this only happen when I'm at home idk why but when I am connected to a different wifi my connection is flawless. I did google this symptoms and did every step that they told me but the problem still lingers is there anyone experienced this and solved/fixed this problem? Please share your it to me thank you in advance. [link] [comments]
Bought new laptop, should I accept free offer of making a recovery drive? Posted: 02 Sep 2018 08:40 AM PDT I am not tech savvy. I just bought a new windows laptop. I am going to pick it up tomorrow but they asked if I wanted them to make a recovery flash drive. Is this something I should accept for free? Does it even need to be done at all? It would be nice to open my brand new laptop for the first time myself rather than them. They claim they usually charge £40 for it and I know I could potentially do it myself also for free but I'm not tech savvy and it would take up my time looking into it. [link] [comments]

Question about placing an ssd in my laptop Posted: 02 Sep 2018 08:01 AM PDT I've got an Samsung ssd 840 from my old desktop pc, and wanted to place it in my Asus GL553V laptop, but it is way to big to fit into the ssd slot. Is it impossible for me to add the ssd while keeping my normal harddrive? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Sep 2018 07:20 AM PDT I currently have a 2017 MacBook Pro 13 inch Non-touch bar and a GS65 in hand and I'm trying to decide which to keep. Macbook Pro 13 Inch (Dual Core i7, 16gb, 512gb ssd) Pros: Display, Battery Life, Build Quality, Speakers, light weight Cons: More Expensive Msi GS65 (8750h, 16gb, 512gb ssd) Pros: Processor, upgradability, 144hz screen, larger screen, cheaper Cons: Speakers, Build Quality, heavier. Use case: I'm mainly going to be using this laptop for school work (College Freshman) as well as media consumption (Videos and general web browsing). I'm also a CS major. I am not going to be gaming on this laptop 99% of the time I have a gaming desktop in my dorm. [link] [comments]
