[DEV] I just released my first app to the with Google's Material Design 2 - QuiQuote

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 07:51 AM PDT

Edit: Just realized my title is word soup. It's supposed to say "to the Play Store". Whoops 😫

A few years ago I started learning Android development, and I started with a simple app that just lets you click through a few quotes. As I learned more, I just kept building on top of it, and after casually working on it every once in a while for a few years and keeping it up to date with the latest APIs and Material Design updates, I'm finally pulling the trigger on releasing it.

    QuiQuote

It's a very simple app, allowing you to input short quotes with the person's name, and save them for later viewing. You can share the quote as text, or export it to an image like this one:
    https://i.imgur.com/N47o9RC.png

There's a list view where you can see all your quotes and jump to that one, and all quotes have a randomized background color when created (you can randomize a quote's background color with the refresh button at the top of the main screen).

    Screenshots:

Obviously I'm a bit biased being the developer, but even with how simple the app is, I've found it to be a lot of fun for remembering weird things my friends and I have said out of context, funny lines from podcasts or movies, etc.

QuiQuote is now available to download here on the Play Store.

[DEV] Periodic Table Professor (Beta) : An Android app that will help you memorize and associate name, atomic number and symbol of elements in the Periodic Table.

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 07:30 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

I'm a self-taught android developer and just released the first beta version of my app. Periodic Table Professor is an app that will help you learn the periodic table by the mean of a mnemonic system.

I'm self promoting here because I need beta testers to help me find issues and report them on GitHub, so if you'd like to subscribe to the beta program you can join from the Play Store.

The mnemonic system is based on a spaced repetition algorithm as well as mnemonic pictures designed to remind you of each element's name, atomic number, and symbol. Of course, a complete regular periodic table with a variety physical and chemical data for the 118 elements is embedded. More data and more features will come soon.

    Thank you!

My first app was released today in the Google Play Store and I hope you all like it!

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 05:41 PM PDT

This app took me around 9 months to create and I wanted to share it with you all. The app is called "Quotin" and it is about inspiring people through inspirational words or quotes. You can either read the quotes and share them with your friends and family traditionally or you can become an Inspirator. Inspirators upload inspirational content and the primary goal is to create a chain reaction. Imagine if your positive message reached out to the right person and that person created a cure of a sickness. Just because they read something that changed their life. That is what I envisioned when I was working on this app and I hope one day it does have that impact! Please enjoy!

If anyone wants to check it out, here is the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.quotin

    Thank you!

Business Calendar 2 not syncing Google Calendar unless Google Cal installed. Workaround?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 05:20 AM PDT

I've run into the issue where Business Calendar 2 won't sync my google calendar unless its enabled. If I disable google cal, then adding events via BC2 to my google account will add them locally but not over the cloud to my actual Google calendar. Alternatively, if I add an event to via my Exchange account, it syncs just fine.

I would prefer not to have two calendar apps installed, so has anyone found a way around having Google Calendar installed in order to sync google account events through BC?

    I hope this makes sense.

    [Question] Screenshot Assistant bug?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 07:27 AM PDT

    Hello everyone.

I am currently using this app to take screenshots, since my power button doesn't work (Moto G4+).

Problem is, the app doesn't seem to work when I'm using Chrome, it bugs out and asks for permission first (which is already active), and it can't be fixed. Disabling/re-enabling permissions don't fix the problem. I can't take SS within Chrome. It only happens with Chrome as far as I can tell, I can't replicate the issue with any other app.

Is it a bug or is there something related to Chrome that's perhaps interfering?.

    Odd bug with WhatsApp

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 11:51 AM PDT

I've been encountering a strange bug with the app. So far, this has happened on my last phone, an S6, and now my new one, an S9. (Both on the carrier AT&T)

The bug makes it to where my messages stop sending, and I stop receiving them, completely random, regardless of signal, until I leave the connection and re-enter another source of internet connection, whether it's wifi or data. It goes like so, since this explanation is probably a poorly phrased one.

    1. Open app, try to send a message, notice messages aren't sending, and I haven't received any.
    2. Switch off of Data to WiFi (if available, if not, switch to airplane mode then turn it off). or vice versa
    3. Messages all suddenly send at once, and I suddenly receive all messages at once.

This happens everywhere I go, regardless of signal strength, and is proved by the fact that other apps work perfectly fine without any spotty connections or buffering (YouTube, Reddit, internet browsing etc). This bug proves to be a inconvenience constantly because I am often turning on and off my data/wifi to make sure I'm not missing any messages, and waiting for the issue to resolve itself seems to do nothing, at least for a reasonable amount of time, I have at times, received messages an hour later and not noticed until trying to send a message and it failing to deliver.

I'm unable to find a solution to this, and it's really irritating more than anything. I got my S9 just a few months ago and the bug started up again just a few weeks ago, making WhatsApp frustrating/unreliable to use. I can't find much about this online, and I'm also wondering if anybody else has had this issue before.

    App for boosting headphone volume?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 11:01 AM PDT

Is there ANY app that isn't add ridden garbage that can actually make a noticable difference in volume output through headphones?

I've tried goodev and it was sketchy... That seemed like the only actual utility in the play store, the rest all looked like placebo junk or whatever.

I have a Google pixel and I have a pair of Bluetooth headphones that get really loud but as soon as I plug in a wired set it is noticeably quieter.

The last resort I suppose would be using one of those dialer codes but I'm apprehensive about that.. so any working apps would be first choice

[Question] Is there an app that makes pressing tbe button on my headphones simulate a tap on the device screen?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 10:24 AM PDT

I use a lot of VR with my phone but my VR headset doesn't have any way to tap the screen. So is there an app that allows the button on my headphones to do that?

Cheapest Android phone qDslrDashboard can run onto?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 10:15 AM PDT

    Hello,

I would like to buy a new Android mobile specifically to use it with qDslrDashboard, I am fond of its functions particularly focus peaking which I use very often.

I'd like a cheap one with good battery life and a removable battery so that I can bring spare batteries with me. If it'd be dual SIM it'd be nice too but not as important. I had a look around about USB OTG support lists of mobile phones but I am not sure if USB OTG support would guarantee qDslrDashboard functionality and also if possible I'd like some first-hand advice rather than relying on those lists.

    Thank you

[DEV] I released a new update for my very first app Consumption Data Manager, one that intentionally looks "retro-style"

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 09:52 AM PDT

I am really a fan of fancy looking message and dialog windows, ones that do not cover the whole screen. For this app Consumption Data Manager, I have worked very hard to make the layouts work in portrait and in landscape mode and to cover a large range of screen resolutions.

In the newest update I improved the listviews for the counter values, because one person informed me that the old design lead to misinterpretions of these values.

I would be very glad to read about your thoughts here... you can install the app from Google Play: Consumption Data Manager. Of course, the app is free and it will stay free.

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 09:25 AM PDT

Hey, I came from ios and am really confused and disappointed at how worse the youtube app for android is.

I mean, is google, why is it so bad on their own os ?

Anyway one of the features I'm missing is the sorting of a channel's videos by popularity. Is there any app that allows me to do it ?

I'm using youtube vanced for now.

Alarm app w/ knowledge of choices?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 09:37 PM PDT

Alarms. You can set plenty on your phone. I take pills twice everyday and set multiple alarms for the same things so I do not forget. Ok, alarms, let's say 1st@ 8am and 2nd@10am for my morning meds. It would be great to have an app that had knowledge of your previous choice. For example:

1st alarm named MedsA, 2nd named Pillz

MedsA goes off and has 3 options. Snooze, stop and Yes Taken. Hit Snooze 4x or "stop" and MedsA quits- Pillz alarm will go off if alarm MedsA value never equals "taken". Pillz has a setting set so you can't snooze or "stop". Only option is Yes Taken. So phone keeps vibrating and/or beeping until you select yes taken.

Alarm for Walk Dog completely different alarm and Pillz never worried by it.

I graduated with a programming degree but that was before Android apps and constant ads. So I can see both the simplicity of it and also the difficulty. Anything out there close to what I'm looking for?

If not and you create apps, give me lifetime premium and beta privilege? LoL. I can see so many options for the app that would require an extra $1 for privilege.

Whatever, I'm just looking for a constant reminder of things. Taken meds already and second alarm goes off, dog thinks it is for his walk.
