    Linux Most support: Mint or Ubuntu?

    Linux Most support: Mint or Ubuntu?

    Most support: Mint or Ubuntu?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 03:57 AM PDT

    With the release of SteamPlay and me getting a bit fed up with W10's bullshit, I decided to give linux gaming a try.
    After a bit of research, I found that Linux Mint is a good noob-friendly distro for a Windows user like me, while Ubuntu has a larger community that I can turn to if I run into issues.
    Still, since Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu LST, shouldn't the problem solving be the same for both?

    Which one do you recommend?

    Virtual Dart Board Idea

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 12:25 PM PDT

    Hello All,

    I thought this may be the place to post this question because of its conceptual nature.

    Although I have been working with Linux for about 10 years now, I still consider myself a noob. I love the idea of Linux, but have never been able to solve any problems with it (or find a practical use for it outside of using FOSS). I basically enjoy tinkering around and learning a bit about everything. I have only used Debian based distros, mostly ubuntu based flavors.

    That said, I do have a personal project I would like to try. I intend on using it in a practical sense and as an educational process. I wish to create an application to track my progress as a dart player. I want the program to calculate and store dart scores in a database. Here are my desired features:

    1 (GIS Program?): Use some sort of visual interface for recording scores and tracking accuracy. My idea is to create a geographic information system based "virtual dart board" that would record what score I am trying for, and how far away my dart was from the mark. The "virtual board" would also feed the individual scores to a:

    2 (Python?):. Calculator that keeps track of current game scores. For example, if I am playing a game of 301, and I scored a 20, 20, and 1, the program would know that I threw a 41 for the round, and I need 260 points to close out the game. These game scores would then be recorded in a:

    3 (MySQL & R?): Database that keeps track of my progress, and is capable of outputting in depth statistics on my dart playing

    All of this sounds like a lot to me, considering I have only basic knowledge of all of these programs. I have limited experience in ArcGIS, I can complete basic beginner tasks with Python, I have an understanding of how SQL works and how to write queries with it, and I can do some multiple regression analysis in R.

    Is this even feasible for someone with my current knowledge? Is there an elegant way to get this accomplished without needing skills from all four disciplines? Can I accomplish all of this using free and open source GIS software? Is GIS even the correct way of going about this virtual board idea?

    I guess I am not looking for a tutorial on how to accomplish my goals. But I am looking for some ideas on a starting point. Or even some pointers on my terminology so I can appropriately google through help files.

    Sorry for my long-winded question, I hope I am in the right place! Thanks!

    Difference between library-call(3) and library-call(3p) ?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 01:12 PM PDT

    For man- pages some library calls have (3) and others have (3p) appended to the call name, even those that are the same library call. What is the difference between these two?

    How to install WiFi/Bluetooth drivers for USB dongles? [Kubuntu]

    Is Fedora fit for beginners?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 12:25 AM PDT

    Hello there

    I'm new to linux, and I've been using Debian Stable since February this year, as my daily driver(on a laptop). Of course, I have it on dual boot setup with Win10 since my study requires the use of AutoCAD, Catia and the likes, and also games.

    I'm pleased to say sometimes I don't have to use my Win10 partition at all for days, Debian has been working great for me. Having said that, I would like to try some other Distribution, but for me Debian has set the bar high in terms of stability. I've grown used to installing packages with apt-get and the huge application repositories for both free and non-free software. It has become my comfort zone.

    Now, a bit of a background information on the hardware. It is an HP laptop with i3 6th gen processor and AMD Radeon Southern Island (GCN 1.0) card. Wireless card from Realtek, using the rtl8723de driver.

    As some of you might have guessed already, the GPU isn't the best linux ready piece of hardware, but the most trouble I had was with the wifi, but with the help of r/debian I was able to get it working. Since then I've been told that the rtl8723de driver has been added to the mainline kernel(which I assumed means that most new linux distros will work with it out of the box? Correct me If I'm wrong).

    Now, I would like to know if someone like me with minimum linux knowledge (most of which comes from online searches and tech forums) can use Fedora as their daily driver without breaking things.

    I don't mind using the terminal at all, but I don't want to have to fix the computer more often than I actually use, am I making sense here?

    Also, does updating to a newer version of Fedora usually present problems?

    Those are my main concerns so far, I guess I'd have to get accustomed to yum and dnf eventually if I actually make the switch.

    Thank you for reading this long and poorly worded post :)

    Feel free to recommend any other Distribution that you think I should try.

    P.S: I have an lxde desktop with xfce settings and xfwm, because of the keyboard shortcuts :D

    Gaming on KVM? just increase VRAM or there is more?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 11:48 AM PDT

    I installed Windows 7 on KVM and want to use it for games. I am at the step of allocating more VRAM to it (currently 16MB). Before I proceed I wanted to ask a few basic questions: 1.) Is Win10 better for this particular scenario or there is no difference? 2.) is allocating more VRAM all there is or I need to do additional stuff? 3.) how much should I allocate? GTX 660 2GB. should I allocate 2GB or less?

    Missing dependencies in Porteus (Slackware)

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 07:04 AM PDT

    I use Porteus which is a distro based on Slackware. One of its main and most interesting features is the use of modules which are some sort of containers for each application, which enable it to boot super-fast. I have been using it for a few years but am still seeing the same issues over and over again.

    One of those is when I download an application with USM. It automatically adds the needed dependencies but quite often it looks like the dependencies it needs don't exist, so it gives you the option of replacing the needed dependency with one of several other applications wich already have that file integrated in them, which results in your downloaded application quickly augmenting in size as it incorporates in fact one or several other applications in the same module. It is especially irritating when you see a small application of about 2 MB suddenly use 50 or 70 MB because of several totally unrelated applications added into the same module just because the needed dependency is not available on its own!

    Someone have a solution for this?

    Piping vs. command substitution--what's the difference?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 04:37 AM PDT

    What's the difference between command substitution vs. piping? See the reply to the thread here where command substitution works and piping doesn't.

    On an unrelated note, how can I parse the data from https://freegeoip.app/ and https://ipdata.co/ as described in that thread?

    Much appreciated.

    Help trying to process files in a directory, with an if conditional inside a for loop.

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 07:31 AM PDT

    I'm trying to process some files located inside a particular directory and or its subdirectories, however I'm having a lot of trouble trying to make my script work.

    I want to iterate inside those directories and be able to do something in case the file processed has a particular extension, and something else in case it doesn't have it, as well as keeping a log to store said processes.

    I thought of something about something like this for my particular problem but I'm having some trouble with it and I don't really know where:

    nohup sh -c 'for file in /home/user/directory2/*.gz /home/user/directory1/**/*.gz;

    `do` `base_file=$(basename $file .gz)` `if [[$base_file == *.ext]]; then` `echo "Hi '${base_file}'";` `elif [[$base_file != *.ext]]; then` `echo "'${base_file}' ain't cool"` `fi` `done' > log.out 2> log.err`

    I believe my mistake is related to the declaration of the way I wrote the conditional, or maybe some syntax, any help is heavily appreciated.

    If I run the same without the nohup command:

    for file in /home/avgodin/Prueba/Directorio2/*.gz /home/avgodin/Prueba/Directorio2/**/*.gz;

    `do` `base_file=$(basename $file .gz)` `if [[$base_file == *.ext]]; then` `echo "Hi '${base_file}'";` `elif [[$base_file != *.ext]]; then` `echo "'${base_file}' ain't cool"` `fi` `done`

    I get this screen in my terminal:

    > do

    > base_file=$(basename $file .gz)

    > if [[$base_file == *.ext]]; then

    >

    randomfile randomfile randomscript

    directory1/ randomfile

    directory2/

    > echo "Hi '${base_file}'";

    > elif [[$base_file != *.ext]]; then

    >

    randomfile randomfile randomscript

    directory1/ randomfile

    directory2/

    > echo "'${base_file}' ain't cool"

    > fi

    > done

    bash: [[file1.ext: command not found...Seems like it is correctly doing the 'basename' command and finding the files in my directories.

    bash: [[file2.ext: command not found...Seems like it is correctly doing the 'basename' command and finding the files in my directories.

    bash: [[*: command not found...IDK what this is.

    Don't know what is going on...it kind of echoes the directory I'm standing in (the one I'm loated at when I run the script)

    Thanks in advance!

    Wifi gone when OS coming out of suspension

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 06:28 AM PDT

    Did you ever see this? Your comp is in suspension, you switch it back on but there is no Wifi anymore. The usual panel showing the networks is there, but it doesn't show any network, and it says "device is not ready".

    This happens to me more often then I'd care for so I am getting fed up with this. The only solution I have at this moment is shutting off my computer and booting it up again.

    I use Porteus 3.2.2 x68 and I am seriously thinking of switching to something else, but first I'd like to see if I can do anything about this.

    Every time I start up my computer it says "no bootable devices"

    Posted: 22 Sep 2018 05:48 AM PDT

    I have tried installing many different distros but it keeps giving me that same error. I think it has something to do with my boot partition (maybe, but don't take my word for it), how can I fix this?

    EDIT: I installed two different distros (Kubuntu and Anarchy) both using DVDs and the same thing happened for both of them when I tried booting the computer up ("no bootable devices").

    I could only sort of boot into Anarchy because I could go to its disk image menu and select "boot an existing OS" and then that gave me something. It at least stored data on the hard drive. Booting Kubuntu was a total loss.

    I'm trying to do this on a totally wiped (but still physically functioning) hard drive.

    EDIT 2: I use a UEFI, sorry for not saying that already.

    EDIT 3: I finally got it working! Thanks for the help everybody! The problem was that the boot mode was set to "Windows" but since I wiped Windows from the drive it had effectively no boot mode at all. After changing it to "Legacy" it worked like a charm.

    Php handlers

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 06:29 PM PDT

    Hi everyone. So, basically, I need to figure out how they work along with Apache (Centos, clean install), and learn how to switch and configure them properly along with suexec. Unlike any Linux related topic I've encountered so far, I was unable to find any at least decent source of information about that - everyone configures them their own way, and there is no pattern in that, which drives me nuts. Are there any good sources you could recommend, please?

    Need help installing discord on Manjaro

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 04:47 PM PDT

    I have been trying to install discord on manjaro linux.

    However, libc++ has been a pain in my ass. I have successfully installed it, and trying to reinstall won't work without overriding wth makepkg -f. However, discord still does not think that libc++ is installed, and when I try to use makepkg, it says "libc++ dependency missing"

    EDIT: Both discord and libc++ builds are from the AUR

    EDIT2: If its relevant, my git clone file for libc++ is inside the discord git clone file, but I'm not sure if that's relevant.

    EDIT: flatpak worked like a charm, ty

    [META] Maybe we should have a rule about help vampires?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2018 05:28 PM PDT

    I love helping people about Linux. It's a deep and scary world, and if you don't know where to start, even doing your own research can be daunting.

    But I hate seeing people continue milking for help when given more than adequate resources. You'll never learn how to use this wonderful OS if you can't help yourself to at least some extent.

    Examples of what I'm talking about:

    Someone gives you the tools you need to use and tells you what you need to do with them. Instead of just immidiately asking "How do I do x with y", perhaps you can Google it. You have a narrow enough problem at this point that you can definitely find the results you're looking for. Try to fix the issue yourself, and after you've put in some effort, if it still isn't working, come back for more help. Don't expect to be spoon-fed the entire solution from start to finish.
