is there a way to auto download my windows 10 curated backgrounds?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 12:21 PM PDT

I remember there being a small application that made it able to auto download all the pictures that were selected with each restart.

Some of the photos are really amazing and I'd like to keep them.

    windows xp recovery lenovo

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 05:20 PM PDT

I have a lenovo t400 with windows xp pro installed. i was trying to format a usb disk in a linux install environment and more than likely corrupted the mbr and file system. I have managed to recover the partition, and have tried many routes to restore the partition to a bootable state. I suspect that lenovos encryption system is restricting me from doing so. does any body have an alternative to try to save this install without rebuilding everything? suggestions are most appreciated.

I know that It is supposed to automatically install on Patch Tuesday, so should I be concerned? Or did windows decide to be different and install it on Saturday?

Windows 7 Universal Random Lag Spikes in Online Video Games

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 04:05 PM PDT

Wasn't sure whether I should post this here or in a gaming-related subreddit... anyway, here goes:

Windows 7 is giving me lag spikes every now and then when I play online multiplayer games. It can be fine for hours at a time, and the lag spikes can occur for several minutes or up to an hour.

It's been doing that for 2+ years and every time I've tried to sit down and google the issue, I can't seem to find any potential solution.

I'd imagine if anyone else has such issues, most of those people would assume it's something to do with their internet connection.

However, it must be related to the Operating System in some way. My computer also has Windows 10 and Linux Mint installed (all on separate SSDs, if you're wondering). This issue does not occur on either of those.

This is also the second Windows 7 installation that does this. I reinstalled it from scratch when I moved it from an HDD to the SSD.

I've never really tried anything because frankly, I don't even know where to start looking, and as I said, I googled to no avail. The fact that it doesn't happen on Windows 10 or Linux Mint has me dumbfounded.

If anyone has had a similar experience and found a solution, please let me know. Thanks in advance!

    Having trouble with my laptop

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 03:32 PM PDT

Downloaded this Ubuntu lookalike theme, installed it with a basic .exe, and rebooted my computer. It changed my desktop to the theme and everything looked correct, but I couldn't open Home anymore, I couldn't use Cortana, Task View, or any of the options on the right side like volume, battery, or time. Right clicking on the desktop and opening Personalize gives me this error. I get similar errors trying to open other commands like Personalize. Trying to open my Windows Mail app gives me this error. Win + I and Win + X both do not work. I can't get to the Windows 10 settings to reset the computer completely but I can get to Control Panel, File Explorer, as well as Task Manager. I can also use Firefox.

This is a fresh new computer and there's no data on it I need to keep desperately other than a few logins, so if it needs a hard reset to factory then I don't really care. Google searches didn't really get me anywhere and I figured y'all might have some knowledge. Help?

Generic keys aren't working on my new machine

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 06:26 AM PDT

A few days ago, I posted here asking whether or not I needed to reinstall Windows (and thus wipe my SSD) to activate a Pro Edition key I bought on Amazon for about 10€. I was told I didn't and since the key did not work and even showkeyplus told me it was invalid, I decided to message the slightly shady German reseller through Amazon and ask for a new one.

What I got was one line of seemingly hand-written text saying "hello. i checked your key... it's valid" accompanied with a different showkeyplus log than what I got, saying it was a valid RTM Professional key, followed by a generic text saying if there's an issue with the key, it's likely not because of the key as they're all tested by Microsoft (???) and I must have screwed up somewhere. I was then linked to a video tutorial in German (granted it has no commentary but still, the interface is different from mine which is problematic when I can't read the damn language) and some instructions. The whole thing was also, for some reason, in broken Google Translate French rather than English, the language I sent them the e-mail in.

They told me, as I suspected, to upgrade to Pro with a generic key before putting in the key I bought. So I went to do that, and quickly realized not even the generic key for Pro (VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T), provided by Microsoft, work on my machine. I get the same error, telling me the key is invalid (0xc0020036), as with my purchased key.

I also noticed this just now : in the Activations page of the Settings app, I have this yellow error text which roughly says:

We cannot activate Windows on this device, because you do not own a valid product key or digital license. If you believe you own a valid license or key, select [the button under the text which I don't know the English label of] below. Error code : 0x803F7001

I thought nothing of it until now because I thought it was standard and would go away after I put in the key, but I noticed the video they linked me didn't have this message. So now, I'm a bit confused.

I'm running an unactivated Windows 10 Home Edition on a new machine (not updated from 7/8/8.1). Could anyone help me out on what the issue could be?

    AUTODIM IS PISSING ME OFF

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 08:55 AM PDT

I just bought a Lenovo 330 a few hours ago

I noticed it was dim when i first started it. but when i charge it, its not dim.

i already went to the advanced power options and turn the display dim settings to 100, didn't work.

i already turned off adaptive brightness.

there is no other brightness options in my power options other than brightness.

I have Windows 10. I'm currently charging it to full for the first time as maybe that is the problem.

Audio Issue - Sound comes through monitor via Nvidia Audio, mic is using Realtek

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 10:03 PM PDT

I used to use Realtek for both microphone and speakers and the noise suppression and echo cancellation worked great!
However, I don't have speakers anymore, and play sound through my monitor with a display port cable.

The mic enhancements no longer work and I only recently thought it may be that the audio is not being played through Realtek, is this correct?

    http://prntscr.com/kpmir4

    http://prntscr.com/kpmit2

Is there anyway at all I can use the Realtek output but still play through my monitor (since it's all I have now).
The mic enhancements were great, because without them the microphone quality is horrible.

I'd even be happy with a third party software.

    Cheers.

    Windows 10S

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 09:08 PM PDT

Just bought a surface pro and it comes with Windows 10S. I tried to download a program I needed for school and it tells me that Windows10S does not allow for apps that aren't on the store to open. How do I get around that? Thank you.

Got an SSD: almost lost everything. Can’t uninstall the OS in my HDD

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:30 AM PDT

Not a hardware (or software) geek, I only have a maybe-average knowledge about computers.

Bought myself an 240gb SSD where I planned to install Windows 10 and World of Warcraft. Unplugged my 1TB HDD (had Windows and all my stuff) and installed Windows 10 in my SSD, it was so perfect by then, I moved my files into the SSD.

After that, I proceeded to "format" my HDD to keep it as a storage disk with the partition manager (maybe it was the mistake, I don't know, I just googled and failed) and restarted it... when I turned it back on, I saw a black screen that said: "Reboot and select proper boot device..." so I panicked. Called a friend who helped me on the phone and told me I couldn't boot from the Windows in my SSD cause the OS was "damaged" and had to format it. I didn't want to lose my data so I started looking for more options. Finally found a program and saved the important folders. Moved them to my HDD disk and booted my SSD to Windows 10 (again). Tried the same: had my SSD (at least working) with Windows + my files and tried formatting my HDD but the same happened again, black screen, no boot.

I need help! I just turned my PC off and came to bed, too tired to keep trying. How can I keep Windows 10 in my new SSD (that has my important files) and just turn my HDD into a storage disk with no second Windows?

PD: I don't have money for an external disk or I could've save all the fear and pain of thinking I'd lose everything.

    Update: SOLVED

    • My friend saved my folders in my HDD (that had Windows) and made me disconnect it from my PC, leaving my SSD connected with my USB Windows install.
    • I had to install Windows from scratch on my SSD with that USB pendrive. It didn't took long.
    • After that, I had to reconnect my HDD, leaving my SSD still connected.
    • Turned on my PC, and Windows from SSD was okay, it booted fast and gracefully.
    • I moved my folders from my HDD to my SSD cause they fit there (they were ~120gb of important stuff).
    • He told me to check the partition configuration, to be sure that my SSD had the active partitions (the one with the recovery partition and boot written under the C:) so the HDD wouldn't be listed as "boot" and ruin my life again when I format it.
    • With my USB Windows install and both SSD and HDD connected, I had to restart Windows and press F12 so it would open the boot menu of my motherboard.
    • Once in the boot menu interface, I selected the "UEFI" option, to open the Windows installation interface.
    • I selected the"install" option and continued with installation, until the part when it asks where you want to install Windows. In that part, I selected the HDD disk partitions (careful enough and triple-checking that I didn't selected the SSD ones) and clicked "delete" until it was reduced to a big "unallocated" disk, and press the "new" button to create a big HDD storage single partition
    • Then, he made me restart my PC and unplug my USB, while leaving both SSD and HDD still connected.
    • It initiated normally so I checked "My computer" and the partition menu and HDD was listed, space available and SSD was listed as "boot", and I started installing drivers, setting my Windows up, moving my important data to my HDD (my new storage disk) and I had to promise not to try to do this things by myself without asking him first.

(I might have omitted one or more steps, I have a really bad memory lol) Hope this is useful for someone!
