New GPU performing worse than old one but no clue why Posted: 02 Sep 2018 10:33 AM PDT I upgraded from a GTX 750 to a GTX 1050ti, and it seems like I'm getting worse performance than before. Specs listed below. I used DDU to uninstall old drivers, and then reinstall the new ones, as well as did this manually. My computer picks up the new card, but I have no idea why it seems to have gotten worse. I've so far only tested this in PUBG. What happens is it takes a good 2-3 minutes for textures to properly load when they come into view, and then after that everything is smooth, aside from FPS drops, but i cannot use any actions (i.e. pickup items), aside from just moving around. I used to get 30-40fps on my 750, and now get 10-40fps with the new card. I thought it was a CPU bottleneck, but my from what I've seen online, it shouldn't be. I doubt it's thermal throttling - the cpu doesn't seem hot to the touch and average temp doesn't seem hot at all. I have two fans, both exhaust. One in the back (with heatsink) and another on top. I've left one side of my case completely open. Pretty sure the card is legitimate. The pyramids quality is SIGNIFICANTLY better. But it's the FPS issues that are the problem. Any clue what's going on? I know for a fact that the 1050ti is better than a 750. I'd rather not have to go return it. Specs: CPU: intel i5-4460 quad core @ 3.20GHz RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws (2x4GB) @ 1866MHz (have to double check this) GPU: MSI Nvidia GTX 1050 ti 4GB twin frozr PSU: Corsair CX750 All drivers are up to date. EDIT: solved. One of my RAM sticks was loose... lol. Whoops. Sorry for al the trouble, thanks for all the help! [link] [comments] |

Sudden and Random Black Screens Only When I Play Games Posted: 02 Sep 2018 09:56 AM PDT So I just bought an EVGA 1080 sc and I was hoping that it would perform as expected, but that's not whats been happening and I need help to fix this. So I'll be playing a game for maybe a few minutes and I just black screen, no warning, no freezing, just black screen. The pc is still on, the fans are still spinning, and it like nothing happened other than the fact that my monitors just stopped receiving a signal. I've looked for a solution but none of them have worked so far. I've tried uninstalling drivers with DDU then re-installing the latest drivers, re-seating the card, switching the 6+2 PCI power, and trying different ports. my psu is a evga 600B, so I dont think it's the psu. Tanks in advance if you can help me out or give me any advice. [EDIT: If you want to know my specs, https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/jjCNYT ] [link] [comments] |
What’s your opinion on used Pc parts? Posted: 02 Sep 2018 12:31 PM PDT I'm thinking of building a computer and was wondering what people think of sites like eBay. Obviously I wouldn't buy a GTX 1080ti for $100 but something reasonable. I saw a 1080 for $450 (Canadian) and they have pictures of the box and the card. The cheapest new ones are over $600 so it seems reasonable. I was looking at their profile and it has 100% satisfaction rate or whatever they call it and eBay has a money back method through them so even if the card wasn't working I could get my money back through them right? What are good quality keyboards, mice and headphones? Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:07 PM PDT My PC setup theme I'm planning is going to have a blue theme, but I can't seem to find quality mice, keyboards or headphones with blue variants. If those exist, please let me know, thanks! My budget for these 3 items are around 3-350, If that is even necessary. EDIT: Sorry if this is the wrong thread. [link] [comments] |

Which to upgrade: my gtx 970 or my 4690k, z97 mobo, and ddr3 16gb? Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:17 PM PDT Hey everyone. First time posting here. Just wanted to get peoples' expertise on which upgrade I should focus on first for gaming (WoW, battle royale games, FPS, Monster Hunter). Right now I'm running the classic 4690k and GTX MSI 970 build a lot of people had back a couple years ago. Would it be better to go to a Ryzen or 8th gen i5, grab a new mobo and 16gb of ddr4 ram, or upgrade to a 1080ti? One or the other will happen first, and then a few months down the road I would finish the entire process of redoing my whole setup. Thank you in advance for any input! Please let me know if I can provide other info or refine what I've stated here. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:57 PM PDT I apologize in advance for the long post, but I feel it is necessary to give you guys as much relevent information as possible as this is a big decision for me and I want to get it right (with the help of r/buildapc's sage advice!). A little context: I am an undergrad chemical engineering student who has had my most recent laptop for around 5 years now. It has served me well, but due to being a music producer and running very CPU intensive projects (maxing out the CPU for literally thousands of hours over the years with no regards to temps) and other normal wear and tear, my laptop has nearly given up in most areas of hardware performance (even the keyboard was bugging out so bad that I had to disable it completely and now use it exclusively with an external mouse and keyboard). It's time for a new computer. The PC side of the story: I have been putting together a list of PC components to build a new PC(for the first time ever), and learning about all of the different aspects that go into picking parts and assembling a PC from scratch has been a joyous experience. My budget is flexible, but I'm looking to spend around $1700-2000 depending on which route I take. I have been watching PC component prices carefully, and it feels like the stock market (lol). When the price of one component goes down, another seems to go up. The pros I see of going the laptop + eGPU route: -I could bring it to class and have an extremely fast, light, and thin laptop with a great screen to work on homework wherever I want -I could work on music with other artists without them needing to come to me (since I won't need a better GPU to work on music production in Ableton, which heavily relies on the CPU cores and threads, RAM, and storage read speeds alone - which this laptop will work really great for as well. -I could bring it to my girlfriend's apartment when I visit her so that I can work on homework and still be able to see her -I can use it with a 1080 or 1070 TI when I am at my dorm room for great gaming performance by housing the GPU in an eGPU box and connecting it through the laptop's Thunderbolt 3 port -I can leave the GPU in its eGPU housing in my dorm room because I won't be gaming anywhere but in my dorm room, so I'll still have the full portability of a laptop. -This laptop has a very professional look to it, which means it won't look as out of place when using it to collaborate with others for professional uses (such as music production or graphic design) -Using an external GPU should take some strain off of the laptop as it won't need to use the MX150 GPU inside of it, keeping temps cooler (if only slightly) and reducing the chances of throttling. -It would cost just a little bit extra to go this route, with all of the benefits of portability. -Takes up less space in my dorm room -Less upkeep The cons I see of going the laptop + eGPU route: -I'm aware that the components inside laptops, even if they are named the same thing as their desktop counterparts, have less performance due to size constraints and thermal throttling -I won't be able to build a PC myself -It's a bit more expensive than building a PC -Less performance than the desktop route, though that difference is negligible in comparison to what I have now. -Easier to damage it, though I am very careful with my equipment and have never damaged anything yet (knock on wood). Additionally, I will have the laptop on a laptop cooler when I'm in my dorm which will at least provide a little bit more protection if a drink happens to somehow be near me and I or someone else spills it. -Easier to have it stolen - though I am at a small school with a very low record of theft (and crime in general) -Won't look as cool as a custom-built PC might, and I won't get that experience of building a PC yet (though I certainly will once I graduate) - Desktop Price: ~$1900, though not final Laptop plus GTX 1070 Ti / 1080 eGPU price: ~$2200 Here is the equipment with prices (at the time of posting) that I *already have* in case anyone is interested or if it's relevant, (also I won't need to buy any of this when going either route): excluding cords from the list because that doesn't seem very important ASUS VE278Q 27" 1080p 2ms Monitor (~$160) Audio Technica R70x Reference Studio Monitor Headphones (~$350) FiiO E10k Olympus II DAC/Amp (~$80), routed line-out to bypass the built in Amp portion to a Presonus HP4 Four-channel Headphone Amp (~$130) Behringer Xenyx Q802USB Mixer (~$80) Audio Technica AT2020 (non USB version) Cardioid Condenser Microphone Ableton Live 9 Suite ($$$) with various CPU and RAM intensive plugins/VSTs (I can list the ones I own if anyone is curious) Logitech G610 Cherry MX Red gaming mechanical keyboard (~$80) Logitech G703 Lightspeed gaming mouse (~$80-100) What do you guys think? I know I am asking a subreddit that's literally dedicated to building PCs and discussion surrounding that, but I hope you guys can try to remain unbiased ;) and help me decide which route will truly benefit me more in my life as both a college student and as a professional. I already have a 120G SSD and 500G HDD (7200) that I use for games. [link] [comments] |

Any feedback is greatly appreciated and thank you in advance! Edit: I would like to exchange the word „shitty" for „underwhelming". Edit 2: „Somewhat useful for gaming" is supposed to mean 1080p and above 60fps. [link] [comments] |

Monitor for PC and Nintendo Switch Posted: 02 Sep 2018 12:56 PM PDT So I just bought a Nintendo Switch and it's great, but I feel I'll need a bigger screen for some games (e.g Super Smash bros, BotW). I don't have access to a TV so I wanted to use my computer monitor as the screen. Only problem is that my monitor does not have sound. Some of the reviews I read on Amazon tell me that the sound from monitors with speakers are trash so would it be beneficial to try to get a TV to use as a monitor instead? Is there another way to go about this? I'm currently looking for monitors between $160 and $300 and any help would be appreciated :) EDIT: I don't really have space for 2 screens, which is why I plan to use one for both my switch and PC. First PC building attempt imminent, could use some help Posted: 02 Sep 2018 10:46 AM PDT Hi, everyone! After my premade PC met it's unfortunate demise last Wednesday I decided to build a PC instead of getting another one made up of questionable components. Throughout the last few days I've been thinking about what I would use my PC for, what direction future upgrades might take/if OCing would ever be something I would attempt to do (I would, if it was necessary) and which components would suit all those needs the best, which led me to this setup: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6kY4ZR Additionally, yesterday I got myself an ASUS DUAL GTX 1060 O3G which was on sale, bundled with an ADATA SSD with 240 Gigs (The SU650, to be more specific). You might wonder why I didn't go for the latest parts and everything. The truth is, I'm on a bit of a budget right now and used my last desktop for like 5 years which was working on a third gen i7 and a stock GTX 670, so at this point any jump in performance will feel huge to me. Before I order all those parts, I would like to know whether I overlooked something or if any of my picked parts should be changed for something else due to compatibility issues and/or lackluster price-performance. I'm especially unsure about the CPU-fan. Also, I live in Germany, if this should be relevant. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

I was also considering the 970 Evo (500GB) and was wondering how noticeable the increase in speed would be. It's currently going for $167 on Amazon. Help me build a small gaming PC and upgrade my current rig Posted: 02 Sep 2018 11:21 AM PDT https://pcpartpicker.com/list/C3x7sZ I'm looking to build a small gaming PC for my wife to play games like Two Point Hospital and Cities: Skylines on. It'll connect to our TV so she'll be gaming from the couch. The case is about as large as I can go such that I can still fit it in the space available. My hope is to upgrade my personal machine to some extent. One consideration that my person gaming rig has a GTX 970, i7-4790k, and 8 gigs of ram. I would like to upgrade my video card (or whatever my bottleneck is) because I recently went from 1080 to 1440 and my FPS has dropped a tad for most games. I am considering upgrading my video card and then passing that 970 to the "new" machine. Budget isn't really a consideration other than not wanting to spend more than I really need to. I'll be buying the parts in the US. Any thoughts would help. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

So I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I thought the smart people here would know how to fix this. My first question is: Whenever I play any games on my computer in general, there is a chance that I will get 170-300+ fps, however, the game runs as if it was 30 fps. I have began to wonder it might be a problem with my monitor, how can I fix this? || My second question is: Whenever my games run smooth and I decide to stream or record, I open OBS. However, anytime I have OBS open on my second monitor (meaning not minimized so I can see it), my game runs as if I'm getting 30 fps, when it tells me I'm getting 150+. How can I fix this? This also seems to happen whenever I get a discord message or leave discord open on my second monitor while people are having a conversation. It will be primarily used for gaming / productivity, but will be relied on as the editing pc for photos and videos (mostly 1080p, not 4k videos) The 2 build lists looks like this: List 1: Threadripper 1920x Gigabyte X399 Gaming 7 32GB 3200 Trident Z RAM GTX 1080 1000w PSU Custom waterloop List 2: Ryzen 2700x ASUS X470-F 32GB 3200 Trident Z RAM GTX 1070 Ti SLI (dual 1070 Ti's, better performance in games than a 1080 Ti from the benchmarks I've seen) 1000W PSU Custom waterloop both builds sit right around the $3k mark, with the 2700x build being only $100 more. Which would be the better build for me? I'm leaning towards the 2700x system for the SLI GPU's, but would love to have a TR system, but from what i've seen the TR platform is TERRIBLE for gaming [link] [comments] |
Single PC for couch and desktop gaming? Posted: 02 Sep 2018 03:28 PM PDT I like to play third person games like Tomb Raider on the couch, but prefer FPS at my desk. I'm also planning on getting into racing sims on my ultrawide curve. So my question is how realistic is it to have a single PC handle both if they are in separate rooms? Steam or Shield good enough or actually great options? Do people just end up building two PCs? [link] [comments] |
Super stupid question: Can I use a N750 TI-2GD5/OC in my Alienware R2? (Upgrading from nVidia 745) Posted: 02 Sep 2018 12:09 PM PDT I've been wanting a upgrade from my rather shitty 745 for a while, and seeing as how someone has a listing on a 750 Ti in my area for 70$, i was gonna go check it out. Im mainly concerned with weither or not it would physically fit (I know it's a one-fan with six pin, and im pretty sure that's what mine is). [link] [comments] |
