Configuring VSF (Virtual Switching Framework) Stacking on the HPE/Aruba 2930F

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 12:21 PM PDT

Just in case anyone is curious, I had to set up VSF stacking on some new kit recently and it's not something I'd ever done before. I thought I'd share my experience in a post, hopefully it might help someone!

    Faster connection over local VPN?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 03:41 AM PDT

I notice dramatic improvement of data throughput and stability when connecting over a VPN in the same network. It's udp uncompressed, still dont understand why it works so much better. Is this a sign of bad configuration somewhere?

10GBASE-SR vs. 10GBASE-LRM + mode conditioning patch cables on old fibers (OM1/OM2)?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 02:02 PM PDT

    Hi

I have site with late 90s multimode cables where for one of the shorter runs I already have a stable 10GBASE-SR link for 4 years. Unfortunately I don't know the exact cable lenghts, but it is very likely to be just a tad bit out of the the specifications of 10GBASE-SR of the 82m on OM2 but it did work very well and I don't have losses (knock on wood)

I'd like to upgrade the other links with the same type of old fiber in the building complex to 10Gbit as well. However I know that they are going to be at least 20-40m longer and I'd like to play safe. (I'll have to work with what I have, however for a new link that was installed recently we were able to convince the contractor to install single mode where he initially wanted to install OM4, but that's only one new pair of 12 fibers from the core to a single building part.)

I later found the original datasheet from our old cables which classifies them as OM1, however it seems to be a "rather good" one for OM1, but not "good enough" to pass minimal OM2 requirements. The old datasheet I found, says:

    • 50/125 diameter, not the more typical OM1 diameter of 62/125
    • Bandwidths of >= 400 MHz*km @ 850nm, >= 600 MHz * km @ 1300nm.
      • OM2 seems to require >=500 MHz*km @ 850nm and >=500 Mhz*km @ 1300nm. $
    • Attenuation should be <= 3 dB/km @ 850nm and <= 1dB/km @ 1300nm.

I'm leaning towards 10GBASE-LRM for the longer runs to play safe(r) - yay or nay?
And with OM1/OM2 it seems, mode conditioning cables may be recommend (or even required?)

Any cabling experts who could give their opinion? I'd really appreciate some feedback.

    visibility when running scripts?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 01:20 PM PDT

Those of you who script/automate functions, what do you do to allow for visibility into the process, management by multiple users, etc. ? I am dipping my toes into scripting and automation, but it would be great if I could create these tools to have lower-level support use...

I'm trying to set this up to be able to pass off certain tasks to a tier1 support tech. Teh basic idea being something along the lines of "select the 2960X switches at X location and run Y task". I'm setting up LibreNMS and Oxidized (dedicated VM, not one of my monitoring servers) to be able to automate/centralize backups. I realize that I have a platform which is capable of a lot more than i'm currently doing with it. An example: I have a need to add an entry into an ACL that is configured on 100 switches in my environment. I can easily write a script to login to each switch and add an entry into the ACL. How do I monitor the progress of it? How do I give a non-Linux person the ability to do this? Is there something that I can use to make the scripts a little more modular/scalable/reusable? Is there any sort of FOSS web frontend to handle these tasks?

Recommendation for a high-gain USB adapter

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 03:39 PM PDT

I'm looking for recommendations for a USB adapter with good range that will be used with a netbook.

I'm setting up a mobile network for an auction company. Requirements are relatively low speed, so I was planning on sticking with 802.11g for distance. Router and external antenna will be mounted at the office trailer that gets taken to the auctions. The netbook is used to clerk the auction, and gets carried around as the auction proceeds.

We're gearing up for a large auction that will be out in a field. The equipment will be spread out over a large distance, so I'm trying to do my best to be prepared.

In the past we've had issues with the signal dropping because I only had the external antenna on the trailer itself. I'm hoping that adding the external adapter on the netbook will help.

[MPLS Beginner] Please, someone explain route distribution protocols for MPLS

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 05:10 PM PDT

After quite a while of googling, I've been managed to figure out that MP-BGP has some sort of support for MPLS, LDP is a protocol for "distributing labels" (where they actually come from, I have no clue), meanwhile RSVP-TE and OSPF MPLS-TE exist with done relation to the topic.

I don't know if I'm searching for the wrong terms, but the best I've been able to come across are various Cisco articles giving particular setups without much explanation of what the various protocols do and how they interact.

    Thanks in advance...

PS: Also, for bonus points, possible direction to achieve a lab with only linux-based routers?

Looking for a Chelsio NIC model & part no. reference

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 10:50 AM PDT

    Hey all,

I spent some time this week looking for a reference list of Chelsio NIC part numbers and was unable to find anything beyond the model names on Chelsio's product pages.

Does anyone have a reference list of product names and model numbers? As an example I'm having a hard time figuring out the differences between parts like 110-1159-40, 110-1146-40 and 110-1120-40. They're all T420's; some are likely T420 CRs with offload, and some aren't, but I have no way to differentiate at the moment.

I'll contact Chelsio this week if I strike out, but I thought I'd ask here in case anyone has information that'd help.

    Thanks!

How many hours to transfer switch

    Posted: 02 Sep 2018 11:56 AM PDT

I am working with an MSP and they have quoted a price to move the configurations from 7 Cisco switches to 8 Cisco switches. The quote seemed rather excessive to me considering that they are all managed switches with no configuration change. I will be showing this to my manager and wanted to know the communities opinion on how long that should take. They will be working remotely and I will be responsible for physically stacking/racking the switches.

So how long to move the configurations & test would be reasonable?

DNS proxy on Juniper SRX 210

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 07:37 PM PDT

I recently purchased a SRX 210 to play with at home (learning Junos). I wanted to set it as a dns proxy but I'm not finding any settings for it. Supposedly it's under system -> dns but there is no such entry. The only thing that starts with "d" is dhcp.

I also looked under the built in help docs and it didn't show any commands related to dns other than setting the dns servers for the firewall and dhcp options.

The docs say the 210 supports this but I don't see it. Any ideas?

I posted here instead of the juniper sub because there is more traffic here.

    vlan question

    Posted: 01 Sep 2018 08:26 PM PDT

hi all, im quite new to cisco and advanced networking i would like to ask for any ideas on having a VLAN in my network.

on ruckus AP, i created another SSID and assigned vlan 99, then ethernet ports, set to trunk port from the default access port. (its a Ruckus 7363 Multimedia Hotzone Wireless AP to be exact)

on my cisco switch, already set smartport of AP to cisco accesspoint, then i see it is now a "trunk port". (Catalyst 3560 Series to be exact)

on pfsense firewall already created a vlan99 and dhcp server, added rule on guest interface to allow * on * just to test things.

    lan subnet is 192.168.0.0/20

    guest (vlan99) 192.168.50/25

problem: clients cant get a dhcp ip from the firewall, (nothing yet works on the new vlan)

Any idea what am i doing wrong? Any steps I missed? I do not have any networking certification nor trainings btw. Any comments appreciated. Thanks.
