Sunday Rant/Rage (Sep 23 2018) - Your weekly complaint thread!

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 04:14 AM PDT

Note 1. Join our Discord, IRC, and Telegram chat-rooms! Please see our wiki for instructions.

This weekly Sunday thread is for you to let off some steam and speak out about whatever complaint you might have about:

    • Your device.

    • Your carrier.

    • Your device's manufacturer.

    • An app

    • Any other company

    Rules

    1) Please do not target any individuals or try to name/shame any individual. If you hate Google/Samsung/HTC etc. for one thing that is fine, but do not be rude to an individual app developer.

    2) If you have a suggestion to solve another user's issue, please leave a comment but be sure it's constructive! We do not want any flame-wars.

    3) Be respectful of other's opinions. Even if you feel that somebody is "wrong" you don't have to go out of your way to prove them wrong. Disagree politely, and move on.

Does the share button not bother anyone?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 12:19 PM PDT

It pops up after being pressed and remains static for multiple seconds then randomly moves one unit upwards as you're about to press a button and forces you to press the wrong app as a result.

It is truly awful UI but I don't see any discussion about it.

What are everyone's thoughts on iOS's new Shortcuts feature?

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 03:08 PM PDT

This was a surprising move from Apple and a very "Android-y" thing to do. The Shortcuts feature so far has been super fun to use, and a much nicer experience than apps like IFTTT.

It almost feels like a toned-down scripting experience for normal users who don't know programming. You can do everything from scrape the web for particular images to sending commands to your car. Pretty cool stuff, and seemingly antithetical to Apple's design choices.

Personally like the design of the non pro vs the pro, largley because the notch is much smaller + no curved screen.

I know this doesn't really fit the android sub but now that gesture based ui:s are making a comeback I think it's important to know how ahead of its time the Nokia N9 was.

Android Users Speak Out: What We Want Changed in Android 9 Pie

The dillema of buying a 'proper' smartphone, and why I'm finding it harder with time.

    Posted: 23 Sep 2018 03:35 AM PDT

The smartphone industry is plateauing, I've heard this so many times. The notch is fine, the notch is shit, heard that too. The headphone jack is going away, in time.. All this is common talk here. These days, it seems like OEMs are making the same sort of phones, all of them, and for all the wrong reasons. But that's a separate debate.

We talk about USPs like a killer camera, or superb displays, or new tech like UD fingerprint.. But is there any brand which has reliability, or continued software support, or better battery capacity (and life), and aftermarket support options? Those should be considered USPs too, along with (unfortunately) the headphone jack. But there's simply nobody who wants to talk about that. I'd been waiting to buy a OnePlus 6T, but that thought went out the window when I heard they'll do away with the jack.

So right now, there's no OEM providing all those things. You may say these are minor things, but I'm sure they matter to a LOT of people. I'd want to have a phone that works fine through that 2 year mark. I'd also want the battery to work properly. And if the company can't provide official support after 2 years (understandable), atleast let the tech community handle things with Custom ROMs.

Especially if they're aiming for the 'budget flagship' area. Maybe you don't make enough profits to justify continued software support for long, so let the people handle it. Allow for warranty after a bootloader unlock, atleast allow bootloader unlock.

I don't know about you guys, but I'd really want a brand to step up and take these things as their USP - 1) Reliability 2) Continued Software Support (and not like LG releasing Oreo when Pie is out) 3) Better battery life. (and capacity too, maybe) 4) Community Support. 5) Headphone Jack (because this is happening)

Would you guys pay for something like that? Or would you rather have the latest innovations for your money?
