I think I wasted my money and I'm devastated

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 04:19 AM PDT

So me - a 16 year old with not much money - in need of a new GPU. I saved for a couple of months to afford a used Sapphire RX 570 off of eBay. Turns out it was an ex-mining card. The guy I bought it off of claims that all of the cards he was selling worked with displayport but my old TV only has an HDMI port. So I just thought "what the hell HDMI will be fine". Got the card today and set it all up but when I plugged it into my TV I got nothing. Blank, black screen. The TV did pick up an input but no picture was shown. I thought "Huh that's weird." So I did the logical thing and tried using my old 550 Ti and surely enough the PC booted and ran fine. But I was back to square one. I tried everything I knew of. Spent the last six hours of my life trying to figure out whether it was the bios or the TV or the HDMI cable itself or what. I made no progress except for one boot which required me to restart anyway.

I'm so upset and ruined by this. I ended up boxing the GPU up and putting it and my PC in a corner.

Any help would be great. I'm open to anything, really.

EDIT: Here's the listing I purchased it from. Thank you guys for all your helpful feedback and messages! I've got mulitiple solutions to run at, now. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com.au%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F303230762022

Tell us what you will be using the pc for please

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 02:49 PM PDT

This is a really common and annoying issue. I hate when people ask "Is this a good pc for gaming?" Or "is this build good for ____" we need to know what type of games you are trying to play. Every time i see one of these posts i ask them what game they are trying to play and i dont get a response for 2 days. So please, put what you are going to do with the pc in the post.

Just got an RX 580 Nitro 4GB, coming from a Geforce 1050ti. Windows 10 runs fine, games (any) always reboot my PC. Is it the PSU?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 05:15 AM PDT

Title says it all. I come from a Geforce 1050Ti which died a couple days ago (used, never trust the original owner...) so I went ahead and spent 160 for a brand new RX 580 Nitro. Now I can't play anything: games run for 5-10 minutes and then my PC reboots. No errors, no BSOD, nothing. I've already tried everything on the Radeon drivers (messing with power settings, fan speed, +50 power, etc) but nothing changed.

If I remove the GPU and play with the default motherboard card (Intel HD Graphics 530) everything runs flawlessly (crappy FPS but zero problems).

Could it be a failed RX? Could it be the "generic" PSU I'm using now?

These are my system specs taken with Speccy

The PSU is just a random PSU I've got from a refurbished PC.

On a side note: my son just remembered me that also the GeForce 1050ti had some occasional reboots (very rare, though, also it didn't need any extra power connector).

I'm a bit concerned about "what to do" before spending money on random components. I am not sure if it's the PSU, the GPU, the motherboard... Whatever.

    EDIT

Is this a good PC for 1080p 144fps gaming?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 03:27 PM PDT

    Build Help:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

1080p 144fps for competitive games (mostly Overwatch and also PUBG a little bit) 1080p at least 60fps for single player AAA games (hopefully being able to do so for a few years)

I don't mind playing in all low settings for Overwatch and PUBG but would like to be able to at least get medium settings for the single player games.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    800 to 1000 us dollars.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Argentina.

Post a draft of your potential build here.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'll wait for the custom rx 5700 cards but would go with the cheaper ones so the price should be roughly the same. I was also considering a GTX 2060 but i think the AMD one was a better value pick.

I know i cheaped out on the PSU but for some reason here in Argentina i can't seem to find any decent ones at a reasonable price, so i'm not really sure what to do about that.

If i'm missing something please let me know.

    Thank you!

New 5700XT or used 1080TI with 6 months warranty

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 02:22 AM PDT

Local shop is selling a used 1080 TI witha 6 month warranty. If I had to purchase new 5700XT at 450$, it would end up being a bit more than 500$ due to taxes.

So is used 1080 TI a better deal than 5700 XT? I plan on doing mainly 1080p gaming.

DDR4-3733 and DDR4-3200 Low Latency FPS Results for my Ryzen 7 3700X Build

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 06:09 AM PDT

Gigabyte released a finalised motherboard bios for the Auros X470 Gaming 7 WiFi, which enabled the setting to use a 1 to 1 divider needed to run the max Infinity Fabric scaling with DDR4-3733 memory.

Therefore, I decided to re-bench 12 games with the DDR4-3733 speed using my G.Skill Trident Z DDR4-3866 kit. The CPU is my new Ryzen 7 3700X and the GPU is a Radeon VII. Games settings have been lowered down to High Presets when needed, to produce realistic results for 1080p high refresh gaming.

Currently, XMP Profiles on many motherboards for the DDR4-3200 kits are awaiting an updated Agesa Code from AMD, but the DDR4-3000 Kits are running with decent subtimings and getting good FPS results.

Therefore, I decided to re-bench my Teamgroup Dark Pro DDR4-3200-CL14 Kit with some low latency subtimings.

Finally, I used a Corsair LPX Vengeance DDR4-3000 CL15-17-17 Kit with the XMP Profile as a fixed baseline for comparisons.

11 out of 12 games saw FPS increases with Radeon VII e.g. 91% of games improved and here is a summary of results.

The 12 game average saw a decent boost to average FPS:

    Corsair LPX Vengeance DDR4-3000-CL15 TO LLC DDR4-3200 = +3.1%

    Corsair LPX Vengeance DDR4-3000-CL15 TO LLC DDR4-3733 = +6%

The 12 game average minus CPU Boost (-100mhz Cap at DDR4-3600+ Speed):

    Corsair LPX Vengeance DDR4-3000-CL15 TO LLC DDR4-3733 = +7%

    Top 4 Game Utility Results

    1) Deus Ex Mankind Divided= +14%

    2) Hitman 2016 = +13.6%

    3) Far Cry 5 = +10.6%

    4) World War Z = +9.9%

Therefore, in a realistic scenario of 144FPS high refresh gaming, Ryzen 3rd Gen CPUs, can kick out a decent amount of extra FPS with low latency subtimings at DDR4-3200 to DDR4-3733 than simply doing XMP Profile on DDR4 Kits.

The faster the GPU the bigger these FPS gains will get as the games I used in these benchmarks were not chosen for showcasing FPS scaling through the Infinity Fabric with DDR4 Kits e.g. some of these games would require a faster gaming GPU to show the complete amount of extra FPS the CPU can produce.

Screenshots of subtimings used are on this link:

    https://imgur.com/a/JwGyZGQ

I had no issues getting DDR4-3733 working on the Ryzen 7 3700X with 1 to 1 divider and the memory controllers on this SKU look spot-on for maxing out gaming FPS.

This is the build I came up with right now which I did go over my budget by a little bit. I haven't really been looking into parts for a couple years and wanted some input on the build. My younger brother is buying my old build as I have wanted to build my "dream" build for a while now. My big question/concern is that I'm not sure if the 2080s is really worth it over the 2070s (or a different card). Another concern I have is that the 3700x are currently out of stock which does drive my price up by replacing with the 3800x. I am not really set on anything other than the M.2 storage so please any suggestions are welcome!

    Thanks!

Buying my first m.2 and trying to triple check comparability, thank you for any help you can provide!

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 01:45 PM PDT

I have a ROG Maximus XI Hero Wifi mobo and I have an Inland Premium 1 TB m.2 nvme picked put and I'm pulling the trigger on that and new OS. I have seen only one video saying that the Hero XI board has 2 nvme slots (vs sata m.2s'?), but the heat shield for one is longer than the other...? The asus site says that they share the sata 2 port? I'm new to the m.2 world and I'm trying to research as much as I can. Financially I can only pull this trigger once.

    Edit: Compatability* lol

Troubles trying to start my new pc

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 03:42 PM PDT

I built my own pc, I think I didn't do it 100% correctly because when I start my pc, the screen is black, and stays black. I cant access my bios so I feel like it might be blocked. Also when I start it, all fans and rgb seems to be working smooth, except for my cpu fan, it is the amd stock fan for the 3700X. The rgb on it is constantly flickering and I don't think the fan is spinning as hard as it should. I guess a cable is not plugged in correctly, any advice which cable it might be? Btw I have the MSI Gaming Edge WiFi motherboard and something that's not that convenient is that I have a msata SSD bcs it was the cheapest, but it didn't fit on my motherboard so I had to buy a msata to sata device. Any help what I should do to start my pc and optimize the cpu fan? Ask me any question if you need more info! Thanks in advance :)

RTX 2060 Super Build vs RTX 2060 Build

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 03:41 PM PDT

There's 2 builds that I'm torn between. I can use a 2060 with an Ryzen 7 2700x (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/j2H2gw) or a Ryzen 5 3600 with a 2060 Super (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/sKjHYT). I rlly can't decide which build to use. I am a first-time builder and will be using the PC for playing competitive Fortnite mainly, but also some Minecraft and CS:GO on the side. The RTX 2060 Super build will likely get better performance, but I'm a little nervous about using a brand-new card that may still have issues. I should be fine though doing the BIOS update for the 3600 though; it seems very simple and I have a FAT32 for it. On the other hand, the 2060 build would be a lot simpler, but performance comes down to whether or not Fortnite can utilize the 2 extra cores in the 2700x, which I'm not too sure on myself. Can I have some input on this decision, I'm buying the parts ASAP.

Custom cooler for reference navi rx 5700xt?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 03:23 PM PDT

Hi all, am building my first gaming pc and am not sure which of these 2 to get. I know that the rx 5700xt is better overall but my only concern is its temperature. It seems that the rx 5700xt has heating issues and where i live temperatures can go up to around 115 (46 Celsius) in the summer. Should i buy an rx 5700 xt with a custom cooler (which one would you recommend that doesnt exceed 70 dollars) or just go for the rtx 2060 super. P.s i dont have time to wait for AIB cards as i have projects coming up

    Improve my ~2000€ gaming/design build!

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 03:23 PM PDT

Third build I'm building for myself, but always with about 5-7 years inbetween - so might not exactly be up2date on everything, but I try to make an informed decision whenever I build one, so feel free to critique and improve every choice I made so far !

What will you be doing with this PC?

This pc will be used for about 50% gaming and 50% home office work.

    Home Office

Since I'll be working from home a lot in the future, I'm looking to replace my current pc with something more fit for a workstation. ( currently rocking a i5-4690 + gtx970 )

Workload will be about 75% graphics design ( Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Lightroom ) and 25% video production ( Premiere, After Effects ).

    Gaming

I mostly focus on working through my steam backlog, and rarely play new AAA titles. So the most demanding stuff are probably AAA games from about 2 years back or earlier.

Would still be neat if i could get some use out of a 1440p 144hz screen in titles like Devil May Cry 5 and Borderlands 3.

What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?

I would like to stay under 2000€ for the tower, everything that's inside and a 1440p144hz - preferably IPS - screen.

When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

    Late august / early september

Which country will you be purchasing the parts in?

    Germany

If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.

    Reusing 1-2 basic 1080p60hz monitors ( LG + acer ) + keyboard and mouse

Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?

Would be my first time, but since this is the highest budget PC so far, I'm ready to try if the improvements are worth it.

What I (think) I'm looking for / My thoughts :

    CPU

Looking for a good value multicore-CPU with hyperthreading, to deal with both gaming and working.

    Ryzen R7 3700x

    CPU Cooler

While the stock coolers for Ryzen CPU seem way better, than what everyone had to offer 5 years ago, they still seem to get pretty loud under load.

Because of my prefered case, I'd like the insides of my PC to be as silent as possible, while not eating too much of the budget.

I'm not interested in any RGB stuff and prefer a clean, minimal look.

    Hyper 212 Black Edition

    Mobo

Since I probably won't make too much use of most of the features of x570 boards, I'd rather use the premium in other parts of the build - and the B450 MAX boards seem to deal with a lot of the issues with Zen2

    MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX

    RAM

Ryzen seems to enjoy fast ram, and the workstation usecase probably wants more than 16gb

    2x 16gig 3200MHz Ram

    Storage

1-2 Tb of M.2 SSD - TLC seems to be the way to go

For noise + airflow reasons, and since we are mostly working with cloud storage + external HDD, I'd like to keep the insides HDD free

Will probably just keep a couple of games I'm currently playing, and current project files on the pc

    Corsair MP510 960Gb

    GPU

Not quite sure on this one - price performance sweetspot for 1440p 144Hz seems to be the 5700 XT, and the AIB will probably be released until I'm buying.

    Radeon RX 5700 XT AIB

    Case Setup

I fell in love with the Fractal Design Meshify C. Coming from the Fractal Design Define R4, I'm looking for something smaller, lighter and with better airflow. I don't enjoy insane RGB MLG Gamer™ aesthetic, but would enjoy the case to be rather quiet. ( probably tough on the meshify, but one can dream )

I prefer the non glass variant of the case.

To ensure decent airflow, I intend to put 2x 140mm intake fans on the front, and the 2x included 120mm fans as exhaust on the back and top of the case.

Any decent, non-flashy, quiet 140mm PWM fans that complement the case, without breaking the bank ?

    2x beQuiet! Pure Wings2 140mm PWM

    Fractal Design Meshify C

    PSU

550W should probably be enough - or would going with 650W help with the noise level ?

I would prefer a (semi-) modular, quiet, reliable PSU.

    Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 550W

    Monitor

Looking to upgrade to a 1440p 144Hz monitor. IPS would probably be the best for design and color grading work. Anything decent in the 400-500€ range, that's available in Germany ?

Bonus points if I don't have to play the panel lottery because of shitty quality control.

    Acer XF0 XF270HUA

So this is what I've put together so far - feel free to improve and critique anything I did wrong! Love learning about this stuff, so I'd appreciate a small explanation, of why the choices were bad :)

Solutions for keeping dust and bugs out of my Cooler Master HAF XB EVO?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 03:19 PM PDT

I'm getting ready to rebuild my PC and want to make sure that dust buildup or bugs don't cause any problems as I sometimes go for several weeks without using it. Any suggestions as to how I might make the top, sides and back sections that don't have a finer mesh covering less susceptible to dust and bugs passing through when my PC is off for extended periods of time would be greatly appreciated!

Here's a link showing what the case looks like for anyone unfamiliar with the model: http://us.coolermaster.com/product/Detail/case/haf-series/haf-xb-evo.html

    Case Help

Does this case have decent airflow, if not, can you reccomend any others in this price range. Was also looking at the Kolink Stronghold I think it was.

Is this prebuilt really cheaper than the sum of it's parts?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 01:06 PM PDT

My son is looking for a desktop PC ~$1000. I told him well let's build you one. I've built several computers when I was younger (25yrs ago) but have kept my wife's and daughters up to date. I haven't built one from scratch in quite a while and thought it would be an awesome thing for him and I to do together.

He does some research and finds this

    https://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Syber-M-Pro-200

I said that looks good but I bet we could get more for your money if we built it. But I put those parts into PC part picker and I came out quite a bit more expensive.

Did I miss something? Can someone show me a better build on parts picker for $1000? Thanks for the help.

    DisplayPort Splitter

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 03:03 PM PDT

I have an oculus rift and a 144hz 1080p monitor and I obviously want to plug my monitor in via DisplayPort, but I only have on on my GPU. Is there any sort of splitter out there that works. I looked on amazon and there were some that advertised 4k 60hz. Would those work? Are there any out there for less than the 50 bucks I found them for?

Accidently ran PC without cpu fan for 8 minutes

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 02:55 PM PDT

Booted up my pc with my new Ryzen 3600 and didn't notice the cpu fan cable was loose. I booted up and played fortnite. Noticed my frames kept flunctuating and ended turned it off. The cpu was pretty hot afterwards when I touched it. It still boots up and everything works. What are the chances I damaged my cpu or other components? Thanks for the help. This was my first build so fairly concerned about the damage I possibly caused. I feel like an idiot...

Building new pc and need advices

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 12:42 PM PDT

    Hi!
I'm building a new pc with few parts that I already own. I wanted to make sure with you that everything works together and that there are no "mistakes" or better upgrades at equivalent price. I already own the ssd, hard-drive, graphic card and ram from the old pc.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions and advices.

Do I have a big enough PSU?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 02:53 PM PDT

Just upgraded to a Ryzen 3600 and B450 Tomahawk. Currently running 500w thinking about copping a 1660ti or a 2060S at some point. Basically whatever has a better sale at some point. Would my power supply be able to handle that? Ty!

Can someone take a look at this part list and let me know if there's any glaring issues, I'm new to building.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 02:45 PM PDT

This is just going to be a gaming rig really, I don't plan on streaming or doing huge editing or anything like that. I don't need a crazy high end rig, but I'd like something that will last me a good while. I've started putting these pieces together, I already ordered the CPU, and the case. I'm mainly just checking buildapcsales for deals on mobo/psu/ram and I'll be just about set. Anyway here is the list, any suggestions are appreciated. I'm not dead set on these pieces, just filling the slots. I already own a GTX 1060 in my current i5 rig, so I just tossed that on there as reference.

Hello! I am building my first PC but before i order everything I wanted to have someone take a look at and let me know how my build is looking. Constructive criticism is welcome! Thank you!
