Android's UI design has gone measurably downhill since Duarte left.

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 04:56 AM PDT

Material design was the beginning of a complete and cohesive design language. Now that he's gone, there doesn't seem to be a single consistent idea in any element of Android, and I blame Murphy. There have been so many arbitrary changes that tore out Android's identity and replaced it with that of the most uninteresting, unnoticeable software experience I've ever seen. It's things as small as the colored icons In the settings. The colors are arbitrary and remind me of Samsung from 2015. Or the gestural navigation, which makes you choose between using it, or literally every app ever, because they all have sidebars that swipe in from the left. It's like they designed it by selectively forgetting that Android is even a thing that exists.

iOS has since developed a design language that has evolved consistently and allows apps to be unique and work the way the developer wanted, while still feeling familiar. I'm now at a point where I like iOS better and it's not because iOS is better, it's because Murphy has simply tossed out everything that was good about Android and made it look like a Google themed skin for the Android that I love and remember.

Android 10's most requested feature it's coming in less than a week but it's still half baked

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 03:03 AM PDT

Google being Google again: Android 10 is probably coming on 3rd September and many Google apps don't comply with dark mode. Here's a recap:

Popular apps without dark mode (I think they should be addressed first): Gmail, Play Store suite, Maps, Home and Search (counting Assistant, Lens, Podcast)

Less popular apps: Duo, Translate, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Wallpaper, Rewards and Tasks

And then there are all the other business apps like My Business, Analytics and Ads which are still in brightly white, but also all the Accessibility/parental control suite.

Another note: there are also apps like Messages with dark mode but not implemented in the way that Google requires: you can see it because there's a white flash on the splash screen, or apps like Clock which dark mode doesn't follow system settings.

On the other side, iOS 13 is coming on 13th September and all first party apps will be dark mode ready. I hope Google takes advantage of these two weeks for adding dark mode on all their apps so we can have an user experience on par with iOS.

Eliminating click bait from your life using Google News

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 12:20 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I've searched for this in the sub but no one has posted it and for those who don't know about the feature I thought it was worth sharing.

A while ago I got seriously fed up with click bait and so I started blocking the websites on Google News (3 dots on the bottom of the article and click on "Hide stories from [Website]"

Obviously the Daily Mail was one of the first sites to go once I found out about it and now my news feed is just awesome to browse. You still get the occasional one pop up but it's just 2 presses away from being blocked forever.

I feel if more people knew about the feature and used it then some "news" companies might actually take notice and give us the clear headlines we deserve.

Thanks for reading - I know it's a well known feature but if I can help even one person escape the digital hell that is click bait then I'm super happy

What are things we DO NOT look forward to in Android 10?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 04:48 PM PDT

I don't want to turn this into a Sunday rant/rage thread, but I do want to discuss things that we do not like about Android 10 so far. I'm especially interested in things that got ruined over Pie. Yes, I realize that most people have not tried it but a lot have and a lot of news and features came out that already tells us quite a bit on what to expect out of the next iteration of Android.

I would like this also to be a sort of a devil's advocate / change my mind kind of a thread too. So, it'll be nice if once a complaint is posted there will be people to tell how does one avoid or fix the issue or it's a non-issue. That way, we can discuss features, as well as offer solutions to potential problems.

    Let me start...

    • Storage permission are supposed to be more restrictive. Apparently it slows things down and apps like Solid Explorer cannot handle things like APKs properly like displaying their icons. This is my main worry, I do not want the restrictions on the file system.

    • Can't start an Activity from the background. This apparently broke quite a bit of apps, such as alarm clock apps. How will they adapt? I have no idea.

    • Clipboard manager apps are now dead, they can't monitor the clipboard in the background.

    • Call recording apps are dead too.

    • Screen recording is more restricted, you have to manually grant permission for them to record each time you use them.

    • Can't have WiFi control apps anymore.

    • Overlay apps such as players (Xplayer) are not allowed anymore. I'm not completely sure about this, but I think I've read where overlay apps (such as video players) are not allowed anymore. This would be my second fear as I use them a lot!

TIL Rogers Wireless refused to sell the regular Note 10 model

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 11:42 AM PDT

I just got off the phone with 3 different Rogers stores in my city, and every one of them said their TR said corporate does not care to sell the standars Note 10, since there is no demand for it.

    Is this a carrier-wide decision?

    Google Search app autocomplete update

    Posted: 27 Aug 2019 12:40 PM PDT

Google's Search app autocomplete functionality was recently updated, removing contacts from the autocomplete predictions. This suuuuuuuucks. I can't be the only one who exclusively called and texted people by finding them via autocomplete.

The app will still provide contact info as a search result is you complete the search. This is hardly as useful though. For example, when searching for my most common call/text contact (my girlfriend, who's name has an unusual spelling), the contact information doesn't appear at all on the first page of Google's results. Other contacts appear as the first search result. For my most used contact to not appear makes this functionally useless for me.

Anyway, I can't find any news on this except for the Google rep response in this thread: https://support.google.com/android/thread/12118018?hl=en

Thought maybe others would like to know why they can't find their contacts from the Google Search app widget anymore!
