Is it me, or have phone cases become a must just to be able to hold your mobile without it falling with most new Android Smartphones?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 05:32 PM PDT

Gee, like seriously. All the last three mobiles I've owned so far have required a phone case solely to make them usable (Redmi Note 5, Moto G5 Plus, Meizu M2 Note). None of the were really truly properly "holdable" without a case.

I think this is absolutely ridiculous. I feel like most costumers have accepted aesthetics over functionality, but for fuck's sake, there's nothing more basic than being able to hold your mobile properly. What the fuck, people.

As a side note, as someone who afaik has average hands, 18:9 sucks and smartphones have become too big (heck, this year there isn't really a decent cheap but good under 5.2in smartphone below $250 dollars out there in the EU & US markets...).

I feel like while the software experience has definitely become better thanks to a debloatization campaign and internal hardware getting better, the ergonomics have become absolutely, completely and utterly rubbish.

    Unacceptable folks. Unacceptable.

    Snapchat Alpha

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 06:26 PM PDT

Just received Snapchat Alpha after being in beta for about 2 weeks. This app is actually usable now. There is post processing on the pictures so selfies actually look decent. App also launches significantly faster and navigates significantly smoother. Before, even in beta, the app was so laggy I would avoid it at all costs. Not so much anymore. Good job snapchat

    Unboxing the FIRST Android Phone!

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 04:40 AM PDT

With the notch-design reaching a fever pitch, why do you suppose the original Xiaomi Mi Mix design (with one side bezel included the front facing camera and other hardware) wasn't more widely adopted? Seems perfect except you'd want the front facing camera at the top of the phone.

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 09:32 AM PDT

Title. Here's an image of the Mi Mix for reference: http://s3.amazonaws.com/digitaltrends-uploads-prod/2016/10/Xiaomi-Mi-Mix-Front-Rear.jpg

I don't mind the notch per se, but a notch with a "chin" just looks awful. IMO only Essential has gotten that design right, IF the OEM feels like they just have to have a notch and chin.

EDIT: Basically what I'm asking is, "Why not a forehead instead of a chin?" Lots of great comments, but u/efbo is the only person so far to address the forehead vs. chin debate.

Snapchat will be getting improvements in camera quality, contrary to rumors

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 11:34 AM PDT

I got into the Snapchat Alpha, first thing I did was test camera quality. You can definitely notice a huge difference in quality as soon as you snap the picture. This is contrary to what I've been reading on this sub, which is that the new Alpha rebuild has no improvements to the camera.

To clarify, this was on the front facing camera. The rear camera appears to still be taking a screenshot, but if they did the front facing camera it's only a matter of time.

For anyone curious, I'm on a Nokia 6.1 running 8.1 stock Android, Snapchat 10.41.5.0 Beta. (It's in Alpha mode but it still says Beta when you look at App Info)

Just wanted to put an end to the fake rumors and thought everyone would want to know that there is definitely hope for us Android Snapchatters.

edit: I've been informed it's still not using the newest camera API, however the difference in quality is still massive and honestly I'd welcome any improvement over what we have now.

Why do failing phone companies follow bad market trends?

    Posted: 24 Sep 2018 05:58 PM PDT

For the last few years, we've seen phone companies killing features beloved by enthusiasts and amateurs alike: headphone jack, removable battery, IR blaster etc.

It makes sense for successful companies like Samsung and Huawei to kill beloved features because it boosts their phone and accessory sales and makes cost-savings possible.

But it makes no sense for failing phone companies such as HTC, LG and SONY to abolish these features because for the last few years dwindling sales and massive layoffs have been part and parcel to their respective phone businesses, which are inching closer to bankruptcy. So why do they keep on churning out the same jackless phones with sealed batteries?

These companies pursued this policy under the belief that killing beloved features would advance –not harm– their position in the market. Some say these companies were drunk with "courage", but they made their best judgment based on facts as they understood them at the time.

Nevertheless, the record is in. After many consecutive years of shrinking sales, they are no closer to a dominant position in the market. It would be folly to assume that repeating the exact same formula would now produce a different or better result. Old challenges demand new approaches.

History shows Samsung moves at a faster technological pace than the rest of the industry so I don't expect HTC, LG and SONY to leapfrog the competition by introducing new, revolutionary tech anytime soon. Besides, I reckon they can't undercut Chinese phone companies. I argue they must resurrect beloved features with real added value in order to incentivize customers to buy their phones. It's a small price to pay for salvation.

These companies are rich with culture, spirit and innovation. But the incredible future awaiting these companies is held at bay by ignorance, stubbornness and lack of willing to change.

HTC, LG and SONY have nothing to lose and everything to gain from shaking up the status quo.

    I want to ask you:

    1. Why do failing phone companies keep releasing the same phones even though their sales have been greatly diminishing over the years?
    2. Can they improve their sale figures by bringing back the 3.5mm jack, removable battery and IR blaster? If not, what do they need to do in order to survive and become profitable?

Edit 1: Yeah, I know LG and Samsung phones still have the headphone jack

Edit 2: Whether you support or oppose the above-mentioned market trends is irrelevant. The fact remains that HTC, LG and SONY have been losing more and more money - so clearly their products have failed at generating sales and are in dire need of an overhaul. They cannot solve their problems by making the same failed assumptions and repeating the same failed strategies of the past. Old challenges demand new approaches.

I think the "they're simply copying Apple" argument doesn't hold water - because it didn't have any positive effect on their revenue which is in free-fall so you would they would scrap this "copy Apple" policy by now.
