Simple Text Editor for Desktop Environment Posted: 09 Aug 2018 01:27 AM PDT Leafpad is the default text editor for the LXDE Desktop environment designed to be lightweight and simple. Although I like this design choice, there are some additional features available in other text editors (ex: Notepad++ for Windows) that indeed improve productivity:

A timesyncd total failure and systemd's complete lack of debugability Posted: 09 Aug 2018 06:43 AM PDT |
Posted: 09 Aug 2018 01:23 PM PDT 3 days ago I got a refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad t440 (came with preinstalled old windows 10 version) to install Linux on and use as a web development machine. First I created a Pop!_OS live usb using etcher and tried to boot into it. It started going really slow but fine but after a while it first failed to start the gnu display manager and then after a few more minutes stuck at a loop whole displaying: print_req_error: I/O Error, Dev loop0, sector ..... During the whole process it also often displayed flip_done timeout errors. Then I tried it with a Ubuntu live usb made with Rufus. After a few attempts where I got stuck at an almost empty "firmware error: tcs_deadline disabled due to Errata" I managed to get into the OS and started the install (including deleting the existing OS on the drive. After the install and reboot I couldn't get it too boot but get a mix of I/O errors and read-only file system errors: https://imgur.com/a/Yn7QKuy After that I've only ever managed to get into the Ubuntu live usb environment once and now only get to the tcs_deadline disabled error and nothing happens. Also every attempt at booting took really long, talking 5 minutes and more. Hardware: Lenovo ThinkPad, 256gb SSD, i5-4300u,8192 MB DDR3 RAM Linux versions tested are the most current ones downloaded yesterday. Is there anything I can do here? From researching it sounds like a problem with the drive which would be fine as I can still return the laptop but when checking the storage with a quick smart check using the Lenovo diagnostic tool (as I can't get into any os) passed though the log wasn't realpy extensive. Removing FilmFanatic popups in Firefox Posted: 09 Aug 2018 06:35 AM PDT I'm not sure how this started, but every once in a while a Firefox tab with a FilmFanatic advertisement opens. Any ideas on how to get rid of this? There's nothing in the Firefox addons list. I'm using: Firefox 61.0.1 Kubuntu 17.10 [link] [comments] |
Stupid question about verifying ISO image Posted: 09 Aug 2018 09:12 AM PDT I recently installed Linux mint on my laptop without verifying the ISO image and I'm starting to get a bit paranoid about it. I have since downloaded the Linux mint torrent from the official website again but when I try to verify it I get that the "signature made Thu 19 jul 2018 10:41:40 best using RSA key 27DEB15644C6B3CF3BD7D291300F846BA25BAE09 When the Linux mint website says it should be signed with A25BAE09 I realise this is probably a pretty stupid question but any help would be great appreciated. Thanks [link] [comments] |

Upgrading OpenSSL so I can start using TLS 1.3 Posted: 09 Aug 2018 06:40 AM PDT Hi guys just a quick question, I used this guide to update my version of openSSL to v 1.0.2o recently on a debian VM with success and was wondering if it was possible to use the exact same guide to update to the newest version (1.1.1) which now has TLS 1.3 support ? Alternatively is there a quicker method I could sue as that guide is a bit long winded, thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Aug 2018 04:56 AM PDT I have a Ryzen 5 2400G with a Gigabyte AB350M-DS3H. I've been using Linux Mint 18.3 on Kernel 4.17.13. And I still have problems associated with the 2400G. Mesa 18.3 caused my desktop to experience a 100% freeze on every boot so I had to downgrade it to 18.0.5. And for the last hour I experienced 2 hard freezes. This has never happened before. I'm a bit desperate at this point. I can't use this computer like I intended it because I'm afraid something might break. Is there a better Kernel for me? Should I just persevere and the problems will be fixed on the next Kernel update? Should I just buy a graphics card to disable the graphics part of the APU? Should I switch distros? What? Full disk encryption post installation for Ubuntu 16.04? Posted: 09 Aug 2018 06:31 AM PDT Is there a way to do a full disk encryption after installing Ubuntu 16.04? Difficulty: OS was installed in Legacy and not UEFI Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Newest mint 18.3 kernel causing me freezes . . . Posted: 09 Aug 2018 12:18 PM PDT I installed a fresh Mint 18.3 onto my system and updated everything accept the latest kernel suspecting it was the cause of my pc freezing. It most definitely is though I don't have an answer for why that is. Any thoughts . . . ? Kernel 4.15.0-30.32-16.04.1 Also. I originally installed Ubuntu 18.4 and Mint 19 and both were freezing. The only set up that hasn't froze for me is Mint 18.3 prior to installing this newest Kernel. Freezes: Sound plays on and mouse moves though everything else is frozen. Ctrl/Alt/F2 works and then Ctrl/Alt/Del restarts. I'm a complete noob and any advice, help or thoughts would be appreciated. System keeps crashing. Chrome is also crashing now . . . It is late and I shall reply to any answers tomorrow when I have a working Laptop on hand [link] [comments] |

Speed aware multiple disk volume manager? Posted: 09 Aug 2018 10:22 AM PDT I have a SSD and HDD of similar size, is there any way of having a single volume manager for both that is speed aware without losing space? the perfect solution would always write to the SSD and keep the hotter data there as well. But I would settle for just writing to the SSD first until it's full and then falling to the HDD. I tried BTRFS but it appears to write to both devices randomly. I think LVM could work but haven't tried yet. It's for my main PC, with Fedora. [link] [comments] |

Problem with the GRUB bootloader. Posted: 09 Aug 2018 08:31 AM PDT I own a HP pavilion power 15. It has i7-7700HQ processor and NVIDIA GTX-1050 GPU. I used to use Ubuntu on my old laptop and I was satisfied with it. I got Windows 10 preinstalled on this laptop so I dual booted Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on this laptop as well. I wasn't able to switch the Intel's and Nvidia's chip. The laptop would freeze when I selected Nvidia's chip. When I used it for a while I got to notice that it used to give me poor battery backup. On windows I get about 7-10 hours on light usage but on ubuntu I got around 3. I decided to switch to Linux mint after that to check battery backup. I had installed TLP, powertop and tried every possible thing for optimization. Linux Mint let me disable Nvidia's chip and intel's chip for better battery but the issue was same. 3 hours backup. I then tried to install Manjaro KDE which is an arch distro. When I created a USB disk, and tried to select the disk from the boot device menu, I used to get an error saying "Selected boot Image did not authenticate". I googled for the solution. Tried changing boot options. Did't work. When I was able to select the device for boot, I used to get GRUB rescue command terminal. I somehow manage to install it on my hard drive but now I am not being able to select Manjaro. I don't get GRUB. My laptop boots with Windows 10 directly. When I select my boot device "Notebook Hard Drive", then I get to choose Manjaro. How can I make the grub bootloader come first during boot and then let me manually pick the Operating System that I want to boot with? [link] [comments] |
Linux Mint 19 XFCE boots to terminal and says it's out of space Posted: 09 Aug 2018 08:16 AM PDT I logged in, and noticed that there were a lot of updates. So, I try to install them via command line. Then the system tells me that there is no space in something along the lines /etc/var/cache or wherever updates go. I suspect it might have to do with having too many timeshift restore points, could it be that and if so how would I go about deleting some of those? EDIT: Would it be possible to access my Timeshift restore points via terminal? Could that work? [link] [comments] |
Cannot install Lubuntu onto USB Posted: 09 Aug 2018 12:39 AM PDT Hey guys, So I finished my PC build and have been trying to install Lubuntu. However, I am trying to install it onto a USB. So I extracted the ISO onto one usb, then booted to that. I then entered the trial and connected to my network. Then, I installed it onto a second usb. I had partitioned it to have 2 partitions. One 2gb swap partition, and the rest as a root partition. I put the mounting point for the root as /. Once the install finished, it started booting but very quickly came up with the message "Gave up waiting for suspend/resume device.". After doing some research, it think this has something to do with my swap partition, but I don't know how I can fix it. If you know a solution, please let me know. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Having problems getting ethernet adapters working on server Posted: 09 Aug 2018 08:04 AM PDT I had a 16.04 Ubuntu eMachine server up and running, then the machine got hit with a power surge. I got a newer, nicer rack mount server from a friend and reinstalled the hard drives, but am having issues getting it to connect to my network. I've been playing around with settings to no avail. The latest clue was during startup, I saw a log saying it failed to raise network adapters. I tried several suggestions from this site, but haven't got it working yet. I'm hoping someone here can help me through this frustrating issue. ip addr gives the following high points (I removed some of the excess to save typing): /etc/network/interfaces file: I realize my interfaces file is probably in need of some TLC, but I don't know where to go from here and which network adapter I should use. Noticeable color banding with Nvidia Posted: 09 Aug 2018 04:05 AM PDT Hi, I am running Fedora 28 with 4.17.12 Kernel (If I recall) and using latest Nvidia driver. When viewing content like Youtube, I can see the color gradients, it's more notable with black/grey content. Windows doesn't seem to display this issue at all. I tried playing with dithering option in the Nvidia settings panel but to no avail. Anyone know a solution? [link] [comments] |
