Bought this too-good-to-be-true system from Microcenter (open box) for $899

    http://www.microcenter.com/product/507831/OMEN_15-dc0051nr_156_Gaming_Laptop_Computer_-_Black

... but I think it's the real deal after using it for a couple of days. I posted this on r/gaminglaptops too but I think it's the best deal going. For $999, you get:

i7-8750H - 6 cores, 12 threads, latest gen, fast fast fast

Full 1060 6GB - no Max Q (also no Optimus, always runs the 1060)

16GB Ram in 1 stick with space to upgrade

    256GBNVMe SSD/1 TB HDD

    Multi-zone lighting on keyboard

    TB3, DisplayPort, etc

Screen is OK, trackpad is meh, but all in all it's an impossible amount of performance in a really nice package. If you live close to a MicroCenter check it out!

Looking for a nice college laptop. Need some help please.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 08:36 AM PDT

Hey guys I'm french and I graduated this year from high school. Next year I will attend highschool and enter medical school. I'm looking for a nice built laptop which achieves what follows :

    - basic tasks : note taking, web surfing, video streaming, Netflix maybe Hearthstone but no big deal if it can't support that

    - portable, lightweight

    - 8 hours of run time

    - 13" 14" is the sweet spot I think

    - and of course budget is ~1300 without student discount

    - durable

I was looking at the Thinkpad T480 for the incredible typing experience and the durability. i5 8250U, 8 GB of ram, 256 SSD for about 1100 with the student beans program discount.

The Dell xps 13 at 1399 (1260 with the discount) currently also seems like a really nice laptopt but don't know about the durablity though.

If you guys could give some pieces of advice. Thanks in advance ! And sorry for the baguette englis haha ^^

Laptop buying advice, Weird prices over here

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 12:12 PM PDT

    Hey there!

Long time searching and looking for a good portable powerhouse gaming/productivity laptop with good build quality and screen had lead me to two options

    • Razer blade 15
    • Gigabyte Aero 15x

So many 15s this season, regardless all the advice I came upon on here and on the internet in general all mention buying the blade is essentially being accepting to pay a premium for the Razer logo, the full metal and (nearly) mono body aluminium case and a little bit better screen, while losing out on storage and ports and that it being a win-lose decision depending on priorities. Aero 15x on the other hand seemed to be the better all rounder choice with the ethernet port, better (?) cooling and more storage options oh and easier accessibility upgradeability.

Now the interesting issue over here in Austria and German Amazon right now seems to be that the GTX 1070 Aero 15x models are rare (mostly third parties) and the ones that are there are going for around 200 to 400 more Euros than Razer blade's 1070.

I wanted to ask valued members here if that pricing change their opinions at all?

I mean it seems like I could get the 256GB SSD version of blade, get a bigger m.2 ssd and an ethernet dongle and call it a day.

But does the Aero 15x have qualities that would still justify that price.

    Thanks a bunch.

    Laptop upgrade advice needed!

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 11:04 AM PDT

Hi folks. I recently received a laptop for work. However... I have a very decent desktop computer that I use in the case that I do actually have to computer work. So...this laptop is at the very best, an occasional use for work purposes. Which in turn, now makes it my travel fun box. The problem is...it is a toaster. I have had a desktop PC for decades, and I am pretty savvy when it comes to upgrading that, however I have never owned a laptop before, and know almost nothing about the hardware side of it. I can run Netflix and Crave on it, albeit very slowly and with some choppy-ness. Everything takes forever to load, and games on it... Even league of legends on low spec mode with everything turned down is awful. I don't want to spend a ton of cash on it, as it is an occasional use laptop, but I would like to be able to play a few decent games, and not have to wait 3 minutes for Netflix to load. I will post my specs below. Its a Dell Latitude.

Any and all advice is appreciated!

    Summary

    Laptop for my dad

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 10:44 AM PDT

Hey Reddit, need some recommendations for laptops for my dad. He is not super tech literate but enjoys cool features. Mainly uses his current laptop for work and the occasional YouTube video (work is quickbooks online) he is starting to get into the idea of using it for steaming movies and stuff as I had taught him how to. But what he is looking for 17" i5 or i7 16gb ram SSD harddrive Slimmer the better Good build quality He doesn't really have a budget but I'd imagine under $1000

His current laptop is 3/4 years old and was $1700 when bought, top of the line but HP does age well.

A lightweight laptop for university & traveling

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 10:02 AM PDT

I am a university student in Finland looking for a light and portable laptop with decent/good battery life. I mainly need it for taking notes during lectures, programming (Visual Studio, IntelliJ Idea) and text editing (Word, Excel), light gaming (DotA 2, CiV 5), web surfing and watching movies.

I haven't previously used a laptop since I already have a powerful desktop computer at home, but I'll be traveling and moving quite a lot during the next 2-3 years and I obviously can't drag my home setup where ever I go. Gaming is not a priority for this machine, but I'd still like to be able to play some less graphically demanding games with low/mid graphics at 30-60 FPS.

My budget is not set in stone, but I wouldn't want to spend a lot more than 1000 €. I could get Surface Laptop (i5 7200U, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD) for 850 € and I really like its design, build quality and especially display, but I know I could get more performant laptops for the same price or cheaper even.

Should I buy that Surface Laptop for 850 € or can I find a better/similar alternative machine for around 1000 €?

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1000 € (Finland).

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, I don't want to haul a heavy laptop in my backpack around campus. I'd also like to be able to comfortably use it in train (and in a car/bus even).

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Between 12 and 15'6 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly text editing (Word, Excel) and programming (Visual Studio, IntelliJ Idea) and light gaming. I would like to be able to play DotA 2 (and maybe CiV 5) with low/mid graphics. Gaming is not priority for me (I already have a powerful desktop computer at home).

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality, durability and at least decent keyboard are important. Touch screen would be nice but it is not a deal breaker. Finger-print reader/optical driver/etc are not important at all.

A laptop for video and photo editing? £1000/$1000

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 02:22 AM PDT

Hi, looking for a bit or direction for a new laptop. Currently own an old MacBook Pro and its dying slowly. I would love another MacBook Pro but I can't warrant the rediculous price these days so windows it is.

The laptop is going to be used as a general computer, potentially a light bit of gaming but this isn't a necessary at all! The main purpose is going to be for editing video video and photography when I'm traveling.

A few things I'm looking for: - a screen with reasonable colour accuracy for the editing. - between 13 and 15 inch for easy transport. - obviously as much power as possible. - the battery life in "gaming" laptops I have looked at usually have a shocking battery life, I would prefer for it to be over 5 hours if possible.

Budget wise it's about £1000 which usually with computers in America it means $1000.

I appreciate any help or suggestions.

Need an alternative to the msi gS65

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 07:25 AM PDT

Hi guys, so I was considering buying the MSI GS65, due to it's beautiful design and performance (I'm looking to play AAA games on high/ultra settings on 60fps).However, the deal breaker for me was that the laptop has very bad accessibility, making it hard to repaste and upgrade. Also, as I live in the UK there are no manufacturers currently selling a custom version of this. With a budget of £2300 what alternatives are there for me?

HP Spectre x360 VegaGPU vs Huawei Matebook X Pro

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 07:13 AM PDT

I am looking for a laptop for content creation (graphic design and video editing) as well as something for my web development business. I also might attempt some casual gaming...

I'm looking at the Spectre and the Matebook X Pro. I love the Spectre except I hear about Thermal issues...I love the Matebook although I'm concerned a 13" screen might be an issue for content creation. I like the 2-in-1 form factor for of the spectre but he portability of the Matebook.

Will there be a noticeable performance difference in the Spectre i7 8705G and the Matebook i7 8550U? Both will have 4k and 16gb of ram.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 06:14 AM PDT

I am going to study at university and have to buy a new Laptop. I was wandering if you could suggest some models, because i am a bit lost in between all those offers and brands.

    Requirements:

Intel Core i5, recent generation or anything similar

    Should be 15,6' , i owned a 17,3' before and it's a bit tricky to carry sometimes

Price range between 400 and 650€

    Touchscreen is not really necessary

    8 GB ram

I will probably use it for writing, matlab and music so the graphical requirements are rather low.

    Thanks

Decent laptop for uni/work/gaming. All rounder!

    Posted: 03 Aug 2018 06:03 AM PDT

Greetings friends! I will be attending university in the UK next semester and I am looking to purchase a laptop. Im going to be in software engineering so I need the thing to attend lectures, code, light game, and later be used as a work machine.

Honestly looking at the market I am a bit lost. I cant find something that I feel suits me so I am coming here for some advice.

Generally I was looking for a 15.6 inch laptop, running windows, having a high performing i7 (non u models i guess), 16 gigs of ram, and a seperate graphics card that can run a few games to pass time and that can handle running unity engine or unreal since i do sometimes code stuff there.

I was looking through the dell G5 series which looked ok but I am a bit concerned about the build quality and how it will affect the longevity of the device since I can't afford to replace it soon. Im thinking of keeping it for around 4-5 years. I know it is a lot but as long as it gets the job done I will be happy. Hence why I want a bit extra specs, so I dont run down performance issues down the road.

As for the graphic card reqs, I was thinking the 105ti would suffice, I think the 1060 maybe be overkill and the heat doesnt warrant it. But this is just assumptions without much proof, and I would like to hear opinions about this.

Obviously I want the laptop to be portable (duh xD) and not look like a spaceship if possible :P

Any advice is trully appreciated. ~

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 1200 pounds (United Kingdom)
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I would like the device to be somewhat portable since I need it to attend lectures, so I will be carrying it around a lot.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows only

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Was thinking of 15.6. Most definitely not 13, could possibly justify 17 inch if the reasoning is sound

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I would like to run somewhat light gaming. Most notably League of Legends, Hearthstone, World of Warcraft and generaly games along those specs or a tad higher. Also I would like to be able to run game engines easily since i dable in coding small games in engines for fun.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -fill here, remove dashes-

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I want the laptop to last me a good amount of years, so I guess proper ventilation, heat management etc. are necessary. Build quality and customer service should be decent.
