Xfinity Modem Broadcasting Strange SSID Posted: 29 Aug 2018 10:27 AM PDT I recently put my Comcast combo unit into Bridge Mode so I could use my own router. However, since doing this I've noticed "Security-2.4" SSID being broadcast. I know Comcast likes to broadcast the "Xfinity" WiFi off of home combo units, which this device is also doing. But why is there this other SSID as well? I can confirm it is coming from the modem as it disappears when I reboot the device. It has no passkey on it, just wide open. Using router from flat downstairs Posted: 29 Aug 2018 02:12 PM PDT First of all sorry if anything is wrong with this post. My grandma lives in the flat downstairs and we got her a router so I can have my own network. I had 6 Mbps max over powerline and that was all good because we only had this bandwidth. Now we have 100Mbps and I still only receive 6Mbps. My theory is that there are 2 different circuits so powerline isn't efficient. Drilling a hole is not an option because I will move out pretty soon and we don't want permanent 'damage'. Wifi is too slow because my PC is too far away. My idea was to put a second router (have one flying around) and put it above (in our floor) the one below because I think that's where the main electrical cable is going upwards and so I thought I might get the best out of the powerline. Then I was planning on having a LAN cable going from the router into the wall where the plug for the lan cable network for the flat is and then having one from my LAN port in my room to my PC. Yet I don't know if that is possible. Is it possible? Do I even need the router or can I just use the cable out of the powerline adapter? Is there a better way? Sorry for my lack of correct phrasing but I am not fluent with this terminology at all. If anything is unclear just ask and I will try to explain it better. Other than that I am looking forward to your advice! Cheers! [link] [comments] |
Help with correct order of what wires into what to create multiple WAPs? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 07:57 PM PDT My 3-floor, 1000sf condo has cable internet enter in the basement via coax, which enters a cable modem that has 4 ethernet ports on the back. I have 3 rooms wired for ethernet, cables that meet in the basement near the cable modem. I have an Airport Extreme that was previously in the basement (which obviously really hurt the WiFi signal), but I moved it to the second floor to hopefully hit all three floors. If I want to add another WAP that's hardwired, rather than wirelessly connected, that needs to be plugged into the LAN outlet in the Airport Extreme, so it's "downstream" from it, right? Not just into an ethernet cable that runs to the cable modem (like how the Extreme is plugged in)? If that's the case, what's the best way to do that? The only thing I can think of is to add an ethernet splitter next to the cable modem, so one ethernet cable comes out of the modem, feeds into the splitter, which then sends internet to the Extreme and the other ethernet outlets in other rooms. Basically, my issue is that if I have to hardwire the modem to the main WiFi router, and the next WAP to main WiFi router, then I'm kinda screwed, since the only place the ethernet wires all come together is in the basement. But this is how most houses are wired, aren't they? Please tell me I'm overthinking this haha. [link] [comments] |
EAP225 V3 limited to 100Mbps. LAN speeds near gigabit. CAT 5e/6 hardwired APs. Posted: 29 Aug 2018 07:41 PM PDT Hey all, I just setup 4x of the EAP 225v3 across my network to replace some old Unifi APs. I'm having some trouble getting full AC speeds on these guys. My LAN is full CAT5e/6, with 3APs connected via CAT6 and one with CAT5e. Both 2.4 and 5Ghz are active. I've limited 5Ghz to AC on channel 44 so I know that my computers will use AC and not N. Upon checking the machines I do see that it's connected to the 5Ghz network using AC. Trying to do a network transfer via Wifi I'm getting only 80-100Mbps, while LAN transfers go at nearly a gig/s which is expected. So it is not a limitation of either the local server, local machine, or router. All of the APs should be getting more than 80Mbps correct? Or am I mistaken by what the APs should be doing? Can I get some help with setting this up if this is the case? Thanks!! [link] [comments] |

What issues will adding another router to my main router cause? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 06:47 PM PDT So I have my main router/modem combo in the living room and a fair bit away in my room I just installed another wireless router but did not configure it as a WAP. This is the one I just purchased and installed. So far it seems to be working great, but I'm wondering what possible issues can it cause so I can keep an eye out for them. Will it cause issues for the main router/modem or the wifi router? Or both? I have an ethernet cable running from the main router to my room that is plugged into the new one. [link] [comments] |
Network for 16-18 Regular Users Posted: 29 Aug 2018 06:46 PM PDT Hi all, About two years ago I asked for some advice on setting up a network for 12 guys and you all were very helpful. From the few options in the post, I ended up using the prexisting TP-Link 1750 as the router and an AP and adding two Ubiquiti UniFi AC-Lite AP for the other two floors. The house this was installed in and it was duplex that was recently purchased by our organization and we would like to have a single network for the whole thing. What I was considering was purchasing two more Ubiquiti AP adding one to the second house area (only 4 regular users) and replacing the TP-Link AP. I would then need a router but I am not sure what to get for that. Any suggestions on a router would be helpful. Do you think a single AP for 4 people (2 in basement and 2 on second floor) would be enough or should another one be added? I was also considering buying our own modem instead of using the one from Charter. Would that be a good idea? Any suggestions? Finally, what would the minimum Internet speed you would recommend to make this network usable? [link] [comments] |
Powerline connection from modem to router? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 02:47 PM PDT Disclaimer: I live in an apartment so can't put in ethernet. My question is two-fold -
Right now we have the modem and router in a central location but that coax line has too much noise to have a reasonable ping for my roommate's games. My thought was we put the modem in the closet and bypass the bad coax line, and use powerline instead. [link] [comments] |
Can't access my router after setting it up as an access point to the main router? I done goofed! Posted: 29 Aug 2018 06:19 PM PDT So I needed to extend my network that was public, to a router with a Username/password. I succeeded in the AP connection, so now there's a public, and one secure wireless connection . The problem is now I can't get into the secure routers Web page to make more adjustments. Every time I type in the routers Url ( I purposely changed it to a .50 at the end to avoid conflict with the main router connected to the Internet), it cannot be reached or times out. I can get to the main routers homepage just fine, but not the second... I done goofed! Save me Reddit! I really don't want to reset it and end up making the same mistake. ( I don't have a network adapter on my laptop, so no ethernet connect :( ) [link] [comments] |
Need a Budget-friendly Disk-based Cloud Storage Posted: 29 Aug 2018 09:03 AM PDT I used to have a dropbox 1TB, and I want to replace it with something like a Synology or QNAP devices where I can create my own cloud. Here's what I want it to do/have: 1- Access it remotely from any computer (upload and download) 2- Preferable a phone app to upload pics and vids directly 3- Share links with others to download files (is this even possible in this case?) 4- I dont care about playing media from it. 5- 2 bays minimum, though I was thinking 4 bays for future proofing. I came across Synology (418j, 416, ...) , QNAP and other brands. I dont want an overkill for my needs, which is mainly backup for my data, redundancy, online accessibility and sharing with others without giving them access to the whole drive. Is it a good idea to setup a cheap computer instead? wouldn't I need a monitor everytime I want to adjust or check something ? Thank you [link] [comments] |
Pre-Wired Home Ethernet Help Please ;-; Posted: 29 Aug 2018 05:46 PM PDT My router/modem is not near my pc so I cannot connect it to the Ethernet ports (without an extremely long cord that would be obviously seen by everyone walking through). I was told by an xfinity employee that I could run (with an Ethernet cable) what I need from the router to a wall Ethernet port in one room, then from the room with my pc which also has a wall outlet Ethernet port I would run another cable from the wall outlet to my pc. The catch is I have to deal with cable module which is very intimidating to deal with , as apparently I would have to link up the cords to match up with the labeled outlets to an input and output. This is where I get lost and need Reddit's help. [link] [comments] |
Phone unable to find my smartTv for casting Posted: 29 Aug 2018 04:53 PM PDT Hello everyone! I have recently connected my phone to a new VPN and since then, my YouTube application can't connect to my smartTv (which isn't connented to the same VPN) for casting. I've found that main reason to cause this is that the devices aren't connected to the same network, but according to their IPs, mine are. Any idea what is causing this and how to fix it ? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 04:49 PM PDT I've reached out to my ISP (Optimum), I've tried 2 separate routers (Netgear/Ubiquiti) and I've still been unable to figure out the situation. I feel like I made a "discovery" by realizing that since I'm living in an apartment complex I'm most likely sharing some form of a "network" with others? I read something about other people logging onto their networks could disrupt or reset my connections. I've called Optimum. They assure me it's not the modem and not the IP address. I've tried 2 different branded routers so I'm convinced it isn't a router problem. Does anyone have any advice? I'm more than willing to run whatever test needed to help figure this out. To say I'd appreciate it would be an understatement. EDIT: Hi all, the reason I made a post was because I had called my ISP a few times and they assured me (of course) the issue wasn't on their end. As /u/papachosneak had suggested, I had unplugged my router and plugged my computer directly into the modem. After 40 minutes of smooth sailing I experienced the same exact issue as I had with the router. I called my ISP and by some miracle the tech witnessed the slowdown to my modem from their end. He said he filed some paperwork and that I'll receive a call back within 24-48 hours about the issue. It's entirely on their end. Both relieved and kinda annoyed. I have little faith that they'll resolve this. [link] [comments] |
Some servers and websites aren't connecting? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 04:26 PM PDT Having a strange situation. Most of my game servers like PUBG and battleNET aren't connecting. Some websites refuse to load certain assets. Bypassing router kinda fixes the problem, things are still loading slow. Google websites work fine. Twitch will not load anything. I tried to disable all router features and update. Tried to swap DNS's. Tried wired wireless everything. [link] [comments] |
wireless connection going incredibly slow for laptop...... Posted: 29 Aug 2018 04:11 PM PDT On my phone on wifi only, I get 6 mbps speed. But on my laptop, I'm getting legit like 0.25 mbps. I pinged my home address, and it had huge spikes and average of 1900 ms per ping.... Which is like 1.9 seconds each. Insane slow speed. I have an MSI Stealth Pro.. https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GS63VR-6RF-Stealth-Pro.html . Killer 802.11 a/c WiFi. So it's supposedly a good network card... but my laptop is the only offender in the house. Not sure why. I checked for driver updates, found nothing... says they were up to date? [link] [comments] |
How do I make these phone lines into Ethernet? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:52 PM PDT https://i.imgur.com/iOSsXKk.jpg The cable guy told me that the phone jacks in my apartment can be turned into Ethernet using these cables. Assuming I get the supplies necessary, what do I need to know to do it? [link] [comments] |
Netgear AC3000 deauthing constantly Posted: 29 Aug 2018 11:44 AM PDT Help! Home about 3000 square feet, single level. Wood studs with drywall. Mostly rectangular in configuration. We have used an Apple Airport Router and are looking to upgrade our speeds. Recently ditched the Cox cable modem and bought and installed an Arris Surfboard SB6190. Seems to work well. I bought a Netgear R7900P tri-band router and have had nothing but aggravation to the point that I seriously doubt I will ever buy another Netgear product. Out of the box - updated firmware - set it up and it has fast speeds. However it continually dumps devices off the network and it takes 10 + minutes to return each to service. Mostly Apple devices having the issue or perhaps they are noticed because they are most used? Have tried shutting off MU-MIMO... no luck. Tried assigning static IP addresses to each device... no luck. Set up each individual device's MAC address in the system and hit APPLY each time (Access control). The system will not keep the updated names etc... Can anyone suggest a router that would not give me this aggravation or at least shine light on this issue? Apple's router is seamless in operation but I think it is slowing our experience down. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:13 PM PDT I am currently using a motorola moca adapter to connect my computer and other devices to my xb3 modem. I am using a two way splitter that is rated for moca in my room so that I can get cable to my x1 box (one of the small ones not the main one), and also connect my moca adapter. It tends to work fine for the most part however every once in a while the internet will cut out for about a minute. If I check my local ping it is at a completely normal speed but internet is either not working at all or extremely slow. If I switch to wifi it works fine. Does anyone know what the issue could be and what I could do to resolve it? [link] [comments] |
Was someone trying to get my password by spoofing my WiFi network? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 03:11 PM PDT I noticed my iPhone was using LTE and not WiFi so I headed into settings. I saw my network's SSID listed twice and my iPhone was attempting to connect. Suddenly it said "Incorrect Password" and prompted me to enter my password again. It also said "WEP is not considered secure..." My router's Wireless network is WPA2 and I've had it for years. It's an Apple AirPort Extreme with no roaming/range extended networks. Ethernet switch or cheap wireless router? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 02:57 PM PDT I live in an apartment building where every unit has a combo modem / wireless router installed by the ISP in the closet. This means two things:
I have a media streaming box connected to my living room TV, connected to the network via wifi. And the video stalls and buffers regularly. This includes choosing either 2.5 and 5 Ghz networks, and streaming via Netflix and local files from my NAS. I'm looking for a way to improve the setup. I was thinking I'd just add a $20 ethernet switch in the living room and connect everything via ethernet. However, I'm wondering if getting a ~$50 wireless router and putting that in my living room (in bridge or AP mode, and deactivating the ISP router's radios) would be a better use of money. I'd have an ethernet switch built-in (so I could still hard wire everything), and perhaps would improve my wifi for my laptop and smartphone and other devices. Is that a worthwhile purchase, or am I likely to still be limited by interference from nearby networks? [link] [comments] |
Home Network Refresh and need architecture advice Posted: 29 Aug 2018 11:08 AM PDT Greetings, I am in need of a network refresh and would like some advice. Here is what I have today in chain order: Rural ISP RF receiver (25d/5u) located in the NE corner of the property with buried CAT5e to outbuilding Ubiquiti Nano M5 (AP) located on outbuilding Ubiquiti Nano M5 (Station about 100yds away) Netgear R7000 (router/AP) Several dumb switches My clients include IOT devices, cameras, iOS devices, consoles, and PCs both wired and wireless. My coverage area needs to include 2500sqft living area, 2500sqft finished walkout area, a single 800sqft outbuilding, and yard coverage for ~1 acre. I really like integration for the monitoring/management of the network so I looked at the Ubiquiti products but everything is up for replacement. So have at it architects or wannabes, all are welcome. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Aug 2018 10:59 AM PDT Hi there I apologize if this is a dumb question but I have an ethernet cable ran from my router to my pc downstairs. I just bought an xbox and would like for it to be on a wired connection without having to run another ethernet cable. Would I just need a ethernet switch or could I use a splitter? Thanks! Best budget router for less lag/jitter? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 08:27 AM PDT We split the internet with 10 ppl (using APs over LAN), so I constantly get lag and huge net jitters on the games I play. The internet is fast and often theres ton of bandwidth left, the latency is good and about 1- 2ms on speedtest, so I came to the conclusion that the router was just not good enough to handle the amount of users/operations :P Here around 5 ppl surf the internet and only use it for social media, 3ppl usually watch youtube/streaming sites and other 2 play only games like League of Legends I want to buy a router that can handle all those operations (so I can finally play without lag/jitter) and if possible costing less than $150, someone recommended me the Archer C9 but what do you guys think is the best? (also if possible I want it to last) Im currently using TP-Link TD-W8980 [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to brick an AC1900 R6900v2 just from a firmware update? Posted: 29 Aug 2018 02:10 PM PDT I have been a long time user of Netgear routers and have performed numerous updates The house uses Windows laptops and towers and apple handhelds and tablets After installing and starting up for the first time the router said update available and I obliged it The display said it should take 3 minutes to complete... After 3 hours of waiting and nothing happening I shut it off and started it again to a solid amber light I have gone as far as going into command prompt and doing the "debricking" procedure ex. (tftp -i 192.168.1.1 put [filename].img) I'm hoping that it's not as bad as it seems but I'm out of ideas [link] [comments] |
