Home Networking Question about Ethernet Switch

Home Networking Question about Ethernet Switch

    Question about Ethernet Switch

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 07:50 AM PDT

    Hey everyone!

So, I know very little about networking. I recently bought a Steam Link and I would like to use it over ethernet connection.

Here's the situation: downstairs, there is a router and a modem. My room is upstairs and only has one port in the wall. I thought this was an ethernet port, but it is too small for the ethernet cord, so I now assume it is a LAN port. I have 3 ethernet cables and a Netgear Gigabit Ethernet Switch. I think I'll have to connect my computer to the switch with one ethernet cable, then the Steam Link to the switch with another ethernet cable. However, I am unsure how to get the switch connected to the internet. Is it possible for me to plug it into the wall in some way? I can't run wires all the way down the stairs to my router or modem. What are my options here?

Very dumb question about NAS raids

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 08:45 PM PDT

I recently purchased a synology ds218j. I dont like the idea of losing half my storage with raid 1 or losing the whole array with raid 0. Can I simply create two "basic" volumes with each of the drives and let them run independently of one another? This way i can still use the full 16tb but only lose half the data if one drive goes bad (and put important files on both drives). Thanks for any help and tips!

What to do if I only have one ethernet jack in my dorm room?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 08:12 PM PDT

There's campus-wide wireless, but my school has a not-quite-a-rule that gaming and streaming should be done on a wired connection because doing these things on wireless would be slow and could slow down other people on wireless that are trying to work/study. There's also another actual-rule that you can't make your own wireless network, which is something I've heard before and seems like a common rule in colleges.

I only have very basic networking knowledge, but I think this means I need a switch or a hub. I don't know the difference. I know a router won't work because all of them have wireless. I was just gonna deal with it and juggle the cable between devices, but I've now heard some stories that while each room is supposed to have two, one jack per student, the odd room may only have one working jack (old residence halls).

Which should I buy--hub or switch? Something else entirely? I just want to be able to plug in my PS4 and laptop and not break anything or cause anyone any problems.

Any suggestions would be great at the time this particular router was hands down considered the best. Basically I'm just looking for similar but dont need some of the new functions

    SU-MIMO vs MU-MIMO worth upgrading?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 07:10 PM PDT

Currently rocking a Tp Link Archer C7 which is a SU MiMO router. Recently there's a new wave of MU-MiMO routers. I know how it works in theory but is there any noticeable difference in real work application (file transfer, consistency) if i would to upgrade to one...

Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 8 USB Tether to ASUS RT-AC1900P Extremely Slow Speeds, Please Help!

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 07:00 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I have no internet available at my house, besides satellite, and have opted to use a Sprint hotspot. (Probably because Charter isn't expanding at all in any rural areas in my state either) This has worked well for me in the past, but running the WIFI hotspot off the phone, has ruined a few batteries, plus I can't get coverage throughout most of my 2,000 square foot house, since the signal is weak. I have read up a lot on ways to correct this, and ultimately decided to purchase an Asus RT-AC1900P Router.

I currently have my Galaxy Note 8 tethered via USB to the router. Current speeds if I run a speed test on my cell phone are approximately 30Mbps download and 2 upload. I then connect my PC to the wireless router's network and I run a speed test and I will be lucky to get 0.5 Mbps download. I am not sure why there is such a dramatic reduction in speed. I also read that the ISP may detect that it is not the cell phone but rather a tethered connection, and then throttle the speed. I signed up for a VPN and have tried that, with no luck.

Hoping someone can help me, and thanks in advance.

Just switched from att uverse to spectrum, and need router recommendations.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 06:54 PM PDT

So i live in a small 2 bedroom apartment, and got spectrum's 200mpbs package, decided to buy my own router, but im not sure where to start. I stream often off plex and i generally host games for multiplayer games like factorio for my friends, other than that its all pretty regular internet use.

I just want something not over the top, but at least a sound investment that will fit my needs

Google OnHub, Not recognizing network PCs.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 05:42 PM PDT

I am running Windows 10 Home 1803 on all devices and have the Google OnHub mesh system with two wifi points (a primary and 1 secondary). I have reset the network in the windows network settings on both PCs that cannot be recognized. Network discovery is enabled on both PCs. I do not want to re-enable to Smbv1 if that is possible. Both PCs are connected to WiFi. Why won't they recognize each other? I have searched on google and cannot find concise solution. How can I fix this?

Additionally... I want to share an external hard drive over the network. I have an old router with the wifi disabled connected to the primary OnHub to act as a network switch. Can I connect the drive to the network switch? I don't think OnHub recognizes old router since it is a wired connection and I am on wifi. This has been a huge headache. Hopefully someone can help

Windows 7 Remote Desktop vs. VNC + VPN for remote access, which is better?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 05:39 PM PDT

So I'm about to set up my server to leave at home while I'm away at school. I'd like to be able to remotely control it from my desktop at school. Unfortunately, Windows 10 Home, the OS already on my desktop, doesn't come with Remote Desktop, so my options are either:

Get a Windows 7 key, install Win7 as the main OS on the server and as a VM on my desktop

Run a VNC (most likely TightVNC) between the two, with a VPN running on the server to encrypt everything between the two machines.

It would just be a pain to have to track down a legit Windows 7 key, and definitely wouldn't be free, but I know that VNCs are kinda dated and pose their own security concerns. So between the two, if I'm going for reliability and general security, what's my better bet?

    Thanks!

Setting up an ASUS with asuswrt Merlin firmware as Wireless Repeater Bridge for a WiFi network that has virtual interfaces

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 05:26 PM PDT

I have a wireless router with wireless networks as physical interface and a virtual interface. I am trying to set up an Asus router loaded with Merlin firmware to function as a wireless repeater bridge for the primary router. The Asus router functions well for the physical interface, but I can't figure out how to get it to do the same for the primary router's virtual interface. Is there a setting for it or could I achieve it with a command prompt?

Is there a better firmware to load onto the Asus AC1900 to be able to set it up as a wireless repeater bridge for a physical and a virtual interface ?

    Apartment complex WiFi/internet help

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 04:22 PM PDT

    Hello,

I live in an apartment complex (USA) that provides internet through WiFi and Ethernet throughout the units. To use the WiFi, we enter our own unique username and password but we are all on the same network. And the Ethernet, we just plug in and it works.

Is this safe, from a privacy standpoint? Should I get my own router and set up my own network? I don't know much about this stuff (networking) so any help would be awesome. If I'm paranoid and worrying, just tell me.

    Thank you.

Edit: Thank you to everyone who responded. I'm going to get a router :)

Best Access Points with MU-MIMO Capabilities?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 04:20 PM PDT

I'm looking to upgrade my home network and have decided to move past consumer-grade all-in-one WiFi Router systems. To start simple, I was planning on getting a single wired gigabit router and a single heavy-duty access point, and add on to it as needed. My initial plan was to use the Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X alongside the Ubiquiti Unifi Ap-AC Long Range Wireless Access Point and see how good my WiFi reception ended up being. However, MU-MIMO technology has piqued my interest, and unfortunately, the cheaper Unifi APs do not have it.

Anyone know of any APs of similar cost/quality that also have MU-MIMO built in?

    Best VPN Router !

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 12:03 PM PDT

I simply want a router to run express VPN.

Before I go ahead and spend money on all unifi products, is there any option which will work better than USG or say, edge router?

Appreciate if its answered a million times, just want to get the latest as of August 2018 :)

I'm moving into a pool house and need advice on getting wifi.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 03:03 PM PDT

Hopefully I'm posting in the right sub.

My fiance and I are moving into a pool house and literally have NO idea how how to get or setup wifi. Before we're fooled by some salesperson, I wanted to come here.

We'll be needing Wifi for our laptops (mostly mine, a chromebook,) our smart TV, a nintendo switch and PS4 (only one will run at a time.)

And this place is tiny, around 200 sq ft.

Advice and/or reccomendations? My apologies if this is the wrong subreddit. Thanks guys!

Wireless router and modem to make the best of crummy internet ?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 02:26 PM PDT

I live in a rural area and sadly the only Internet available here local cable provider that advertises 5 Mb/s. It can actually pull 5-6Mb/sec in the wee hours of the night, but during peak usage it's typically closer to 3, and I seen it as low as 1.5 (per Speedtest). The modem is a refurbished Motorola they provided for free (SB 5100) current router is a Securifi Almond from 2013 that I've always hated (loses all setting during power outages)

Usually have 2-3 devices at most connected for web surfing and occasional video streaming.

Recommendations to optimize what little bandwidth I have? I'd like to get some better equipment and then start experimenting with a faster DNS resolver like 1.1.1.1

What kind of splitter do I need for coaxial cable connecting WeBoost 4G/LTE booster to indoor antennas?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 10:22 AM PDT

    (Is this on-topic here? I couldn't find a subreddit that seem more on-topic but I wasn't sure.)

I have a WeBoost 470103 which works very well, but my home has multiple stone walls and I need to split the amplified signal to multiple indoor antennas in different parts of the house.

To address that I'm looking at buying a 4-way coaxial splitter, but I have some questions about this. From WeBoost that item actually costs $120, which seems very high to me-- I found the same thing on Amazon for $5 and I'm not sure if there's a difference or if Wilson is just a rip-off.

Additionally, the WeBoost one says it incurs a 6dB loss in signal, and the Amazon one is only 3.5....either way though that's pretty substantial, is it not? Doesn't that almost entirely counter the few dB of gain I get from the amplifying circuit in the first place? Do I need to buy separate amplifying systems for each branch of the split? That seems absurd and unlikely but a 6dB loss leaves me uncertain.

Appreciate any help you can give!

Ubiquiti AmpliFi for 3000 sq.ft. home - do I need to get any meshpoints?

Netgear WAC120 - Can't clear stored admin password with factory reset.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 01:28 PM PDT

Hello all. I've been given a Netgear WAC120 Access Point.

It powers up, advertises its default "NETGEAR11_ng" and "NETGEAR11_ac" SSID's, both of which I can join without any password. (Note: default should be "shareme" or somesuch).

I can access the web interface on 192.168.0.100 as expected (both from LAN and the wireless LAN) but the default username password of admin/password does not work. I've followed the instructions for a factory reset (power up with reset button depressed for 5 seconds) but it doesn't appear to reset as expected.

I've tried different browsers as well as connecting from wired and wireless LAN. Anything else to try, or should I bin it?

    Gigabit with QoS? (8 tenants)

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 09:22 PM PDT

I'm getting CenturyLink Gigabit Fiber next week, and I have 7 tenants + me in my home.

I'm needing QoS to keep speeds normal for everybody (i.e. de-prioritize things like people using torrents, vs people viewing netflix/youtube/etc.).

I'm not sure the best way to achieve and configure this. I currently have a Asus RT-AC3100 (Merlin firmware) with 160mbit / 5mbit on Comcast. It's been stable, but not sure if it can handle gigabit while doing QoS.

I'm wanting to not let the bandwidth go to waste.

    residential internet/cable tv wiring

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 11:37 AM PDT

ok so help me out. I used to live in Ohio and had high-speed cable internet service. the data transmission was over coax to the house cable modem for internet service (of course) and then tv's could plug in with coax/set-top box for TV stations.

in this scenario, we just paid for cable internet, and at the same time received about 40 standard-def tv channels, my newer TV could even decode some local channels in HD.

NOW.....we just moved to Texas, and apparently with the one provider in our neighborhood we have fiber-to-the-house. the house is wired with coax and cat 5e to basically every room, all terminating in a recessed metal box in my master bedroom closet (pretty standard for newerish homes in my area)

apparantly the "modem" is in a box mounted on the outside of the house, with a cat5 feeder line running from it to the closet box....so I have internet set up and handled but...

how does the TV signal come through in this scenario? does it get handled by the same modem and transmitted via cat5 to a box that outputs a coax signal that I don't have (b/c I dont subscribe to TV service) or something? Is there anyway i can tap into this and get some channels like before?

thanks for any advice. never dealt with fiber before. 50/50 Mbps isn't bad

edit: after thinking for a minute (I'm not at home) on the main cat5 line from the modem, 2 of the twisted pairs are put into their own RJ45 male plug to feed my router. the other 2 pairs are in a RJ45 put into a 5port switch that the previous owners left...I'm ASSUMING that this is the tv signal, sent out over cat5 to each wall port, and that a small set-top box decodes this signal and HDMI-out to the tv...is that right? if so, there's no way I can get that signal myself without the company's boxes right?

    new router advice

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 10:26 AM PDT

Hi - im wanting to improve wireless coverage in my house (currently running Asus RT-N66R).

Basically router is in the garage on first floor - second floor get's bad reception, as well as first floor - where it's further away from the garage.

So House is wired with ethernet - im thinking I can just get newer asus router + 2 access points (I'll plugin into ethernet ports) to cover all bases.

Can u recommend newer asus products I should use that work out of the box (I prefer not to tinker with custom firmware anymore)?
