Dear Microsoft, could you please release a streamlined W 10 version without Cortana, Appstore, CandyCrush, Forced Updates, etc? Millions would pay in gold, thank you! - A loyal user since 3.1

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 02:46 AM PDT

So small rant but I've finally made the switch from 7 to 10 Pro and just have to say the experience has not been great. I've been a user since 3.1 and absolutely love Microsoft and Windows, however this recent manifestation of the company is very disheartening. While I enjoy many aspects of the new OS there is an overwhelming majority of things that just put me off from the New windows environment:

    • Forced updates that interrupt the user are completely unacceptable. I've experienced and witnessed too many instances during work of this happening at a critical moment to the point that it's become a running joke. Yes you can set active hours, but when traveling, going through timezones, etc, these things get mixed up. Under no condition should a computer suddenly shutdown and make a user loose work.
    • The dozens of preinstalled programs by third parties on a fresh install is again: unacceptable. We do not care about your licensing agreements Microsoft. If windows was free then yes we could abide with a couple of unwanted programs but when a user purchases your OS they are paying for a working product, Your working product. Not Candycrush Saga.
    • Cortana. A personalized AI assistant should be an optional feature installed on request of the user, not something forced upon them. After disabling cortana on the group policy settings the search function works perfectly well, so why make it so difficult?
    • Telemetry. I understand the merits of this to continuously improve the windows environment. But under no condition should this be mandatory. Forcing this upon users has created a general ill will and has bred uninformed paranoia among a vast majority of users. If this was entirely optional then most of the resistance to switching to w10 would simply evaporate.
    • Xbox, Game bar, DVR, etc. Again this should be entirely optional for the user not an integral part of the experience.

There are many other small things that took about a day in Group policy to fix, but that's exactly my point: A user should not spend a day going over everything disabling all these unnecessary features in a 'Pro' environment. Even the enterprise edition suffers from this. It should be the other way around, if I want these features I'll enable them Microsoft.

If a streamlined, minimal windows environment were to be released I'm absolutely convinced the adoption rate would go through the roof.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Seriously Microsoft?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 12:50 PM PDT

    Seriously Microsoft?

I just formatted my PC and this is the first screen I find in my new Windows? When is it going to stop? When we have our start menu completely filled with this trash? And I can't even uninstall them yet because I have to wait for Microsoft Store to update them to prevent a Start Menu bug.

This is beyond disgusting. Why is Windows 10 not considered adware at this point?

(Un)Popular Opinion: Why are people still advocating for Windows 7?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2018 11:23 PM PDT

Short and to the point: there is a constant debate in sub as to whether or not users should adopt Windows 7 for their needs. People bring up the long-debunked "Windows 10 is Malware" arguments, just like people bring up the "Windows 7 is outdated" lines.

Despite personal feelings on the software people advocate for, how can anyone on this sub honestly say Windows 7 is the best option from a consultation perspective?

    • Windows 7 EOL is in January 2020, a mere 1.5 years from now: The vast majority of users never reinstall their OS, let alone frequently enough where they'll do a major upgrade like this after being set up on Windows 7.
    • Windows 7 no longer receives feature updates: this includes updates for DirectX, Windows MR, Windows Store, etc.
    • Windows 7 does not fully and unhackabley operate on the latest Intel and AMD hardware from the last year or two: workarounds exist, but their viability going forward is questionable if not completely unusable from a business or corporate hardware purchasing lifecycle perspective.

It seems like some on this sub-reddit want to bring us back to the XP days where individuals and companies run an outdated OS for a decade and expect Microsoft to come to the rescue when they've failed to update on time. I understand the concerns and complaints about Windows 10, but ultimately people need to upgrade, switch to a different operating system, or accept a vulnerable system.

Why, legitimately, do people continue to advocate for a clearly dead-lined operating system?

Colour calibration only applies to my desktop.

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 07:18 PM PDT

I just upgraded my PC from a 2009 workstation to a 2018 gaming rig with fully updated Windows 7 Professional. I'm using a VGA adapter for my old monitor due to a lack of an actual VGA slot on my new system, monitor manufactured ~2004. The colours of the display were very dark and had heavy shadows on everything. After calibrating colours it works fine for my desktop and any windowed programs running on my desktop, but as soon as I log out of my account or run a program in fullscreen, the darkness and shadows reappear. How do I set this for the full system? Why is it not applying to fullscreen (i.e. no borders, have to alt tab out) programs? It's causing major issues with my display settings in Steam games as when I load them in fullscreen the Steam overlay is almost entirely black, save for the white text. No brightness/contrast settings were changed on the monitor itself before upgrading my system, it's the same as it has been without issue for several years.

    Function Key Help

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 04:54 PM PDT

I recently bought a new Lenovo laptop with Windows 10. I typically use alt+F4 to close windows and use F11 to go full screen, however I use the other function keys for their "special" purposes (eg adjusting volume, adjusting brightness, etc). There is a FnLock which allows me to toggle whether I want to use all of the "special" keys or all of the normal functions. Is there a way to where I can allow the F4 and F11 to provide their normal functionality and leave the other function keys to do their "special purposes"? Thanks

Problem with sound in windows 10

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 12:48 PM PDT

in my pc I have 2 soundcards:

    - Sound blaster Omni 5.1 (speakers)

    - Sound Blaster Play! 3 (USB to Jack) (Headset)

My problem happen when using OBS, Shadowplay or any record program. The system sound in the programs when I am using the Omni sound blaster (speakers) is always the same independent of the windows volume BUT when I use the Sound blaster Play! 3 (headset) the volume signals that the record program receive is dependent of the windows volume. So if i hear it at a proper volume the program does not receive it. And this is a problem because when I use the headset is when I record hahaha.

    So,

    Why is this happening?

Is there anyway I can make the signal independent of my windows volume?

I can't put my windows volume to 100% because I destroy my ears and my headset has no volume controller =(

New Windows 10 User (and converted 10+ year macOS user)

What do you recommend I install? What settings should I definitely change (other than turning off all the data mining stuff)? I have never used Windows 10 before and my only Windows use the last 11 years has been at work (medical charting software like Epic), so everything is foreign to me and I feel a bit lost!

Change Windows Calculator Key to a user-specified calculator program?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 07:27 AM PDT

How can I change my windows calculator key (the one that is standard in windows that is built into a standard windows keyboard - I don't mean logitech or such nonstandard "crap")

I did this before so I know it is possible on windows 10, I just forgot what I did... and googling this time around hasn't helped me. I can't remember if it was a registry edit or if I used a special program to change the configuration somewhere.

I'm not looking for any suggestions about using a program that stays in memory, like autohotkey/autoit because I know it is not necessary. Plus virus scanners often complain about such programs.

anyone know how to do this?

[Win10] how to lock local user account out of folders?

I've set up a guest account on my computer, and want to lock it out of some folders. However when I go to Advanced Security Settings, I notice I have 4 options to choose from:

    Administrators

    SYSTEM

    Authenticated Users

    Users

Which one would the Local Account be under and how can I make sure that when blocking the local account, I don't also block my own account?

After the last update (a couple of weeks ago) UI is really sluggish

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 12:02 PM PDT

As the title says after the latest update which I've received a few weeks ago (Version 1709, Build 16299.547) everything has considerably slowed down. Right clicking on a taskbar icon takes up to 5+ seconds to open, Task manager takes up to 10 seconds after ctrl + shift + esc combo, opening File explorer takes up to 5+ seconds and it opens with all icons being blank and slowly loading up the correct icons, same with control panel, settings, etc...

Games, web browser and everything else works normally.

I'm 100% positive it's not the PC's fault as I've got a dual-boot with arch and it works as well as it did the day i installed it.

Anyone got any ideas for causes/potential fixes?

**Bonus:** For almost half a year I've got this persistent issue where each day the OS clock desyncs and I have to go to Date and Time settings and update the internet time. I've tried setting the sync server to `time.nist.gov`, enable/disable automatic setting of time, enable/disable automatic setting of timezone but nothing helped. Again it's not the PC clock as it's barely a year old MoBo and on arch the time is always correct.

Intel/AMD Switchable Graphics...can't get AMD Control panel to even show up. Have tried installing appropriate drivers. Windows 7 Ultimate - 64bit - Dell Inspiron 15R SE 7520

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 06:53 AM PDT

I recently did a fresh install of Windows 7. One of the first steps I did was going to the Dell Driver site and installing the appropriate drivers (https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/product/inspiron-15r-se-7520/drivers) which many are from the 2012-2014 time frame.

The first time I went through this process, I remember seeing that I had AMD Catalyst options in the right click context menu along with the intel options...hence switchable graphics. Along with a handful of Intel driver updates, chipsets, Windows update, etc.. I wanted to see if there was a more recent AMD driver update. There claims to be, when downloaded from the AMD site, and through trial and error I determined I would get various errors (opengl, etc.) show up. Then, uninstalling would freeze, and I'd have to try again and eventually get the driver removed. If I do a pure "update driver from windows" in the Device manager, it returns the Intel HD Graphics 4000 and AMD Raedon 7730M driver...but no AMD control panel I can access.

Basically, even if I wipe the drivers and start fresh..even the actual AMD download from the Dell drivers section, I don't ever see any AMD graphics control panel like I originally did. I do if I use the one from the AMD website..but even when it works, my computer fan sounds like it's on all the time which I hated.

Trying to figure out if I am missing a step, doing them in the wrong order, or what. I used the Guru display driver remover https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html which works...but again reinstalling even the original doesn't produce the expected AMD Catalyst control panel I hope for.

I'm at a point of just wiping the drivers and going with whatever Windows update gives me, and not taking advantage of the switchable graphics (unless it's happening, and I just have no control over anything)

Can a video player alter/modify a video file?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 09:34 AM PDT

I know this sounds weird (I have a bit of an OCD), but can a video player alter a film file and its size?

For example, I've been playing videos on my Win 7 by always using VLC player. However, today I opened Windows Media Player for the first time since I re-installed my OS (and chose custom settings since I want to keep VLC my default player), and I am a bit worried whether WMP won't... mess with my video files and alter them, thus making them unplayable. Their size and integrity can't be altered simply because I've opened them with a different player, right? I mean, if an MP4 file is 700 mb and 123 kb, it will stay 700 mb and 123 kb, no matter what player I open it with and no matter that player's settings?

What do you think? Thank you and appreciated.

Preventing mirroring of laptop display when waking from sleep (and connected to an external monitor)

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 07:47 AM PDT

I have a laptop, the lid is always closed except when I need to open it to press some keys on the keyboard to wake it. Then I close the lid again.

I have an external display hooked up.

The problem with this is every time I wake it from sleep this way it defaults to mirroring 1|2 both displays. Which means that the external display will run at a suboptimal resolution until I change the displays to displaying on 2 only.

I would like to keep it set on Display 2 (the external one).

Does anyone know how to do this?

    [question] taskbar related question

    Posted: 02 Aug 2018 07:32 AM PDT

so, i prefer my taskbar at the top of my desktop and i have it "locked" and watnot. but, im still getting a random window here and there that opens "behind" the taskbar right?

is there any kind of software that i could designate the area below the taskbar as open for any window being used or something along the lines of forcing all windows to abide by the taskbar and not to interfere with it? i hope that made any sense.
