Cox is basically bringing back the Neilson box for internet??? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:51 PM PDT I received an email from Cox Communications today about signing for their SamKnows Whitebox. Which is apparently a part of the FCC's "Measuring Broadband America" initiative. Which has apparently been going on since 2011 (which I had zero clue was a thing). Does anyone have any experience with these boxes? I'm more concerned about privacy than anything else. In the email cox says blah blah blah no personal information blah blah blah. But seriously, I don't trust them, but I know my internet speeds fluctuate very much during the day (read: not primetime) and if I can dump some data into the hopper, I'd like to. WiFi Mesh Systems, which to buy? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 02:12 PM PDT I want to try a Mesh network system in my apartment and I thought of the Google WiFi System. My apartment has 1291.67 square feet. Analyzes point to Google WiFi and Eero as the best WiFi Mesh systems. Are there better options? [link] [comments]
How do you connect an in wall ethernet jack to a modem and pc in different rooms Posted: 08 Aug 2018 05:43 PM PDT My room has a built in ethernet port in the wall and I would like to connect my pc to it because the wifi is really slow. I have tried to plug a ethernet cable into the computer and the wall, and then plugging another one from the modem to the nearest ethernet wall jack. The modem is far from the cable box so I am not sure how to connect everything. [link] [comments]

Posted: 08 Aug 2018 07:52 PM PDT So I was getting away with using an Apple airport express for basic console gaming and streaming. It got zapped during the storm that rolled through tonight. I haven't had to shop for a router in a while. For a 1000 sq foot, one level house, would I be better off buying a traditional router or buying the router for a mesh system. Part of me is tempted to just go grab an AirPort Extreme as the express got the job down for so long but looking to see what the best option out there is. Thanks. Posted: 08 Aug 2018 07:16 PM PDT I currently am using a random ASUS router to connect to WiFi networks as a client, but it does so very poorly. It has a hard time connecting to 5G networks, and the range seems to be much shorter than my cell phone. I want a router that will do this better, longer range, and more reliably (and as many networks!) as my cell phone at least. I've tried running DD-WRT to do this and it's also unreliable with modern networks. So, it should connect to a WiFi network (whatever I can throw at it), then it should bridge the network it's connected to its physical ports. Ideally a low power draw. I'd prefer NOT to have to rackmount. Ideas? TY [link] [comments]
Posted: 08 Aug 2018 05:30 AM PDT Hey guys, I have a TPLink archer c7 router in my apartment, and I have a question about VPN setup on it. I set up the L2TP on it which works just fine, but if I run all my network through that I have issues with Netflix/Prime Video (maybe some other stuff but I haven't found anything else). The problem is that Netflix doesn't allow VPN traffic and I am connecting from a VPN server in the same city I live in. It breaks netflix on my TV and PC's. Is there any way to route everything but Netflix through the L2TP? [link] [comments]
NAS RAID 1 for personal/photo/video backup Posted: 08 Aug 2018 11:23 AM PDT Hi all, I am looking to put together my first NAS RAID 1 solution. I am a photographer that has been using multiple external hard drives for backups. I'm looking to consolidate the information into a more secure RAID 1 configuration. I have about 4TB of photos/videos and 1TB of computer backups. The Synology DS718+ with 8TB looks like a good solution. My questions is about the NAS WD Red hard drives vs desktop drives. They are more expensive than I was expecting. Due to the reliability of them? For my application, do you still recommend going for 2 NAS specific hard drives? Lastly, I am considering building a PC in the next couple of months. I haven't researched incorporating a RAID 1 into the build. Would that make more sense or long term a NAS would be more practical? New townhouse construction, where should ethernet wires go? (floor plan included) Posted: 08 Aug 2018 05:03 PM PDT This is a follow-up to a post I did recently. Thanks for the great input. I learned two main things from that post - 1) CONDUIT 2) Use my own non-overpriced switch.
Unfortunately, the response I got back from the builder's vendor is that they do NOT do any conduit. Per wire cost is $165 for Cat6, three are free of charge.
In the floor plan ethernet_locations.png, I have marked the 5 data cable locations which I set up in the initial planning meeting. The D/D/C(oax) is where the router would sit, getting data from the ONT, and sending it back down to the switch. Will be Verizon FiOS, so I don't think I will be using the coax at all.
After coming to reddit, it sounds like I should put in more now. I am trying to keep this part of the project under $1000, so that gives me about 6 more data cables, 9 in total. If I were to put in 4 more cables, where would make the most sense? Also does it make a difference whether the cable runs through a shared wall (ie between BR3/BR2 on Floor 3) vs a wall with a window? Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:59 PM PDT I'm not super smart when it comes to networking, so bare with me. My WiFi router (https://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F9K1113/) is supposed to be able to handle 867Mbps, but when I have my PC's Ethernet connected to it, I only get 40 or so. My plan is supposed to deliver 200Mbps. I connected my PC straight to my modem, and I got a solid 197Mbps. Really confused as to why my router isn't delivering. Can anyone recommend a router that would fix this? I really don't want to spend above 130 USD. Thanks a million. Edit: Just fixed it, stupid thing called "Intellistream" was on BY DEFAULT that was capping me to 51 Mbps. If anyone has the same problem sirect them here if you'd like XD. Question comparing router/modems Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:19 PM PDT Hello i currently have the SBG6580 and the only problem i had with it was that the signal would be very weak from a long distance(roughly 70 feet? with some walls in the way). I am thinking of buying the netgear ac1900 c7000. Would this modem help with that problem? thanks for your time, if you need more info lmk. Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:05 PM PDT Basically, I live in an apartment shared with two other human beings. One of them has an Ethernet cable connected from the WiFi router to whatever the hell he has in his room. So for the past couple of months, I have come to noticed the WiFi only works for only most of the time. Other times (usually at night), it would not work at all. All of my three devices can connect but have no internet access nor the access to the router's gateway. I had no idea what was the culprit until one day, I got curious. I unplugged the housemate's Ethernet cable from the WiFi router, then to my surprise, the WiFi connection was back to normal. So I confronted him, asked for an explanation to why did that happen. He acted like he knew nothing and insisted the WiFi connection has always worked, implying the problem was my devices all along. I gave him the "bullshit" face. The other housemate didn't care much, he only admitted his phone could connect, but not his laptop. It is clearly impossible for all of my three devices to not have internet access at the same time, unless there's something wrong with the router. I have a feeling the housemate is tampering with the router settings by prioritizing internet access to what ever device he connects the Ethernet cable to, or limiting the number of devices connected, or even blocking others from internet access, or maybe he really does know nothing. But that's very unlikely seeing the proof of unplugging the Ethernet cable and his suspicious behavior when I confronted him. Obviously, he got angry afterwards and connected back the Ethernet cable and the WiFi connection is back to 'only working sometimes'. Anyone has any idea what he could be doing? Or what should I do to fix this? Or maybe the housemate isn't the issue after all. Might just be a faulty or damaged router. Edit: I'm not sure what brand is the router, probably TP-Link, but I suppose most brands work the same way? Shouldn't have much of a difference. Network adapter stuck on "identifying" or "no internet" after a fresh format Posted: 08 Aug 2018 03:50 PM PDT Hey folks! Having a really really weird problem with my desktop machine after a fresh Windows 10 install. I was running into weird little issues so I decided to format it and start from scratch. That's where the problems started. After formatting, Windows 10 automatically downloaded all my drivers for me and I was off to the races. However, when attempting to install any drivers on my own for some other devices (webcam, capture card, etc), Windows would hang once the driver started installing. I decided that I'd do another format since it only takes like 10 minutes. That's where the MAJOR problem started. My ethernet adapter is experiencing issues. It never gets an internet connection. I have updated the driver, I have uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it, but it runs into the same problem. The weird thing is that my router identifies the machine's MAC address no problem, but it says that the device is inactive and never succeeds in a ping test. When I attempt to use Windows 10's diagnostic option on the ethernet adapter, it gives me an error ""Ethernet" doesn't have a valid IP configuration - Not Fixed". When I attempt to do an ipconfig /release in command prompt, it tells me that an address has not yet been associated with the network endpoint. I am seriously stuck, boys and girls. Can anyone help me? EDIT: I have also tried plugging the same ethernet cable into another device. My laptop connects instantly and receives an internet connection. It's only on my desktop that I am experiencing an issue. EDIT 2: Just did a full disk clean from command prompt and formatted again. Same issue, no internet connection on the ethernet card. R7000 wireless could be a lot better Posted: 08 Aug 2018 02:41 PM PDT I've got a R7000 with 4 people using it off and on throughout the day, though mostly everyone is on in the evening. We have an XBone, Roku, 3 laptops, and 4 iphones in use at one time. During the evening, connectivity to the iphones the furthest away from the router suffers, and it's faster usually to disconnect from wifi and surf on lte. Dynamic QOS is setup, and my latest internet test results are 120 down and 12 up. Of course, the router is on one side of the house, while the iphones will be on the opposite side of the house, which is ~1400 sq ft. Re: R7000 settings: Smart connect is enabled, which is supposed to "intelligently select the best WiFi band 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz for your WiFi connections". 2.4 b/g/n: 20/40 MHz coexistence is enabled, and Mode is set to 600 Mbps, transmit power is 100% 5 ghz a/n/ac: channel 153, mode up to 1300 Mbps, and transmit control is 100% Enabled: Enable Implicit BEAMFORMING - Boosts WiFi speed, reliability, & range for all mobile devices Enabled: Enable AIRTIME FAIRNESS - Prevent network lag when slower devices connect Previously, I had a Aruba AP on the other side of the house connected via network cable, which worked poorly because the iphones would have a hard time figuring out which AP to connect to. I don't know specifically what networks surround me, but I'm surrounded by houses w/ wifi. What should I do to help connectivity for the iphones and other devices on the other side of the house from the router? I can try to move the router to the middle of the house, but it's a pain (have to drill from the crawlspace and through the wall), but wondering if there are better settings I can try. Want to buy a new router but know anything about them. Posted: 08 Aug 2018 02:37 PM PDT Edit title: I want to buy a new router, but I DON'T know anything about them. Hello people. I'm new on this section and I want to buy a new router/modem. I have a 50 down/50 up connection and I'm using a ubiquiti antenna and a ZTE ZXHN H298N. I'm experiencing a lot of WiFi disconnections and some lag spikes when I'm livestreaming, so I've decided to buy a new router. My question is this one: the cable which is coming from the antenna, it connects on a small device which from the one side it has a power cable and from the other it has 2 ethernet ports. On the left port on this small device is connected the cable coming from the antenna and on the other one there is the ethernet connecting directly to my router. On the router, this ethernet is connected on the WAN port. Moreover if I disconnect the cable from WAN and connect it directly into my PC/laptop I have access on the Internet. So what do I need to buy to work with this situation? A router only device or modem/router device? [link] [comments]
Issue with either Router or Modem Posted: 08 Aug 2018 01:17 PM PDT Within the last month, I've started experiencing an issue with (I think) my modem. It will randomly reset itself. The table below shows the error codes from DOCSIS Event log from the most recent event.
I had a tech from my ISP come out today and he checked the line/connections, reset something and said everything looked good. He thinks my router may be causing the issue. I currently have firmware version 3.0.0.4.382_50702 installed on my router. I had this same issue with a previous modem and am currently using a Linksys CM3008 modem. I have WoW internet. Any ideas? Could the router be causing this issue? Edit:Formatting [link] [comments]
Setting Home's internet prioritization Posted: 08 Aug 2018 12:53 PM PDT I would like to set my home's QoS settings in order to improve user's experience while surfing the web. I don't want to prioritize torrents/downloading from web or any other stuff. My Archer VR600 let me select prioritization based on application which has 4 options available regarding web surfing (I think)
There are more options like VPN, TELNET, SSH, IPSEC etc. There is even option for facebook and whatsapp Which options should I enable to increase web surfing? [link] [comments]
Suggestion for an average home router Posted: 08 Aug 2018 08:47 AM PDT We recently moved to a house and our old d-link AC750 router does not cut it anymore. Our house is square-shaped, around 26' x 28' with two-stories + basement. The router is in the basement next to the modem and my computer (via ethernet) and we are getting zero signal in the bedrooms upstairs. I have a couple of smart devices (chromecasts, tablets etc) and plan on adding more. Should I go for a mesh router? I was leaning for an Orbi RBK30 or Deco M5 but they are quite expensive and I thinkthey are overkill. Would a low-end "standard" router like a Archer C7 / C9 also work great for my conditions? Thanks [link] [comments]
MoCA, cable splitters, and WiFi Posted: 08 Aug 2018 08:38 AM PDT We just moved into a new house and it has an absurd amount of cable connections throughout (previous owner must have had a TV or two in every room!) I however am a cable cutter and only order cable internet, but I'd like maximum speed throughout the house. The "easy" solution would be to buy Google WiFi or similar and plug one in to the modem and place the other two elsewhere. But I'm skeptical that the locations distant from the main hub will have optimal bandwidth. With all of these cables everywhere, I thought it would be good to jump on the MoCA band wagon. But this is where I'm not getting clear answers in my searches: - The cable guy made some passing remark about the number of splitters and not wanting to split the main line going to the modem, which I can understand. But it seems to me I'm going to have to split somewhere to send signal to the rest of the house. Is this right, and will it affect the signal? I've seen internet/TV splitters, but do they make internet/internet splitters? - If each of the Google WiFi hubs is hard-wired with MoCA, will they still "mesh"? Or do they assume that only one should have the connection to the wall? I drew a nice schematic of what I'm thinking, but I suppose I don't have enough karma to post (?) If anyone could draw a diagram of how these things should be connected in an optimal way, and details on specific components like the splitter(s) and where they should be located in the line, it would be very appreciated. Posted: 08 Aug 2018 12:20 PM PDT I've got my TV box connected by ethernet. There's a unmanaged switch behind the TV and a few months ago I cut the cable in the loft and put a switch in. So the connection from the router to the TV box is router>switch>switch>TV box. It used to work with just one switch, but now with the second switch it doesn't. If I run an ethernet cable from the router directly to the TV it works. It's only one channel, a 4K UHD channel and my provider BT say it's a latency issue and they commonly get it with powerline adapters. So it looks like the second switch added too much latency. Other than getting rid of the switches completely, which I'm not going to do, is there anything else I can do? [link] [comments]

Help! - Working on a scenario with VPNs Posted: 08 Aug 2018 11:10 AM PDT My current router has started to falter and shows signs of needing to be replaced. I'd like to update my home networking situation while I'm at it. My house is a ~1400 sq ft, 3 br, two-story, plus a basement. My ISP service is a 100 MB dl cable connection in a small suburban subdivision. I work from home two days a week. Video-conferencing and remote network access is imperative, but I don't have heavy bandwidth considerations other than the occasional large file to be dl/ul, etc. We stream all of our media over wifi (Netflix, Amazon, HBO, Hulu, Plex) and have numerous phones, tablets, smart home devices, set top boxes, laptops and TVs in the house. I play video games on PC and PS4. I am also a hockey fan and subscribe to NHL Gamecenter to stream games (more on this later). Currently, I have a VPN service (Private Internet Access) and pay an annual fee. This is convenient for IP-spoofing on the PC to catch hockey games that are blacked out, etc. I only have a client on the PC, but I'd like to be able to set this VPN service up on other devices, as well. Is it possible to set up this VPN service on a router on a port-by-port basis? In other words, could I set my PS4, for example, to connect to the internet via VPN while keeping the rest of my house off of it? The next time I wanted to use the VPN for something, could I easily assign that port to a different device, like my PC, and still keep everything else off VPN? If this is possible, what kind of router would I be looking at? Do I HAVE to run DD-WRT or Tomato to achieve something like this? I'm not totally opposed to it, but I'd take the more convenient option of a ready-made router, if one existed. I also plan to use NAS to feed my Plex server and I don't want VPN to interfere with that, either. Is what I'm describing possible? Am I asking for too much from a single router? Would a dual-router setup be better? If what I'm describing is not possible, what's the best way to achieve similar results -or- what would you recommend? I appreciate any input you can provide. Posted: 08 Aug 2018 10:30 AM PDT I downloaded an app on my Mac called one cast. It allows me to stream my Xbox one to my Mac on the same network. Posted: 08 Aug 2018 10:17 AM PDT I'm moving into a new home fairly soon. In my current home, I bought two Ubiquiti AP-AC Lites and had them wired in the attic. I never have to see them and they just work. Handoff between the WAPs can be dicey, so if you're streaming something to a Chromecast, for example, and move between zones, you'll probably lose your connection. I also don't love managing it via the Unifi server software. If that machine crashes and you don't have a backup, the only solution is to SSH into the access points and do a full reset and start over with your config. That's not the end of the world, but it's one more hassle. At the new place I will get at least 400 mbps internet service and might spring for gigabit, just because it's available and not that much more expensive. We're cord cutters with the usual streaming apps running, I don't think my daughter has closed the Spotify app in a year. Plus at least two data-heavy machines (Steam game installs, etc.) I might be able to pull wired ethernet to the two data-heavy machines, and the main media server (Plex) will definitely have a wired connection. From what I know of mesh networking, I can skip the wired ethernet (saving a lot of $$) but I'll pay for that big-time in performance. Also, most mesh devices seem to want to live on a desktop and take up space. Am I right about that? If I go with PoE WAPs, what's the best buy out there for performance without spending a fortune? I'd like to fix the hand-off problems I have in my current house, have great management and get rock-solid throughput everywhere. How seriously should I consider a mesh setup, which one, and how many points should I buy? Thanks in advance for the advice. [link] [comments]
Posted: 08 Aug 2018 10:01 AM PDT Hi, After a bunch of research, I found bits and pieces to my question but I still don't fully understand the solution. I am totally new to both Fios as well as networking. I am building a new home, which will have cat6 and coax runs in each room. I am interested in getting Fios gigabit with TV and eventually using my own router (something like Google Wifi). I understand that I will also need to have a moca adapter since the STBs require internet connection. The question is, will I need an adapter for each room I will have a STB? Does that mean I will need a splitter from each coax port in the wall - one to the STB and one to the moca adapter? If that's the case and since there is only one ethernet on the wall, I'll need a switch? Thanks and hopefully I'm not getting this completely wrong. [link] [comments] |
