This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

My brother is building a PC and now he's told those two parts aren't compatible

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 02:53 AM PDT

My brother bought all the parts to build his PC from amazon except the case and the processor. We don't live in the US so sending it back to Amazon to get the right part isn't an option. The parts are arriving soon but his friend told him that the RAM my brother bought and the motherboard aren't compatible. I told him I'll consult this community because he isn't very familiar with Reddit in general.

To keep this short, here are the two parts that he was told are not compatible:

MSI ATX Motherboard Motherboards Z370-A PRO

    CORSAIR VENGEANCE RGB 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200MHz C16 Desktop Memory - Black

I appreciate everybody's time looking at this post and answering my question.

Custom Paint Job on a Acer Predator Monitor

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 02:06 PM PDT

Hey guys! Just finished a custom paint job on my Acer Predator (Amazon Link) and thought I would share it with you all! Check out the pictures here!

    Backstory

I have been working on a frost/ice styled PC build ever since my wonderful AC unit decided to piss itself on my last PC. Renter's insurance saved my ass and gave me way more money than I thought I would get for the damages, so I decided that I would make sure to go all out on some more style specific things that I had skipped in the past. While the PC is not yet ready for a nice Build Complete post (still saving up for a custom hard line loop), I really wanted to highlight the custom monitor work I had done since it isn't something you see a whole ton of posts on here.

    Guides and Info

Awesome walkthrough of all the steps and where I got the materials/paint suggestions from. Great tips on setting up spray painting process and best practice tips: Linus Tech Tips vid on Spray Painting Monitors

Good example of the process and for the monitor that I had as well: Imgur Walkthrough on Acer Predator Custom Paint Job

Specific instructions for the paint that I used: Automotive Touchup Guide

All in all I pretty much just followed the Linus video for the steps I was going to take, so between those two resources, I didn't really see any reason to post photos of my process (or take them for that matter), so if you are looking for a walkthrough on how to do this, check those out.

    Materials

Here is my final BOM from everything that I ended up using:

    Automotive Touchup

    1. Grey Fine Scruff Pad $1.98
    2. Adhesion Promoter $9.95
    3. Primer - White $9.95: Probably should have bought two of these
    4. Tack CLoth $1.62
    5. Basecoat $Varies: Choose a car color you love and fill out the form. I chose BMW blue and white metallic for this project.
    6. Clearcoat $9.95
    7. Rubbing Compound $2.76
    8. Sandpaper Pack $2.95

    Other Supplies

    1. White Model Paint: For touchups and PREDATOR logo
    2. Blue-green Model Paint: For touchups and ACER logo
    3. Paintbrushes
    4. Drop Cloths
    5. Facemask: You get what you pay for with these, cheap ones offer little protection from the fumes I learned...
    6. Painters Tape
    7. Waxing Cloth: To rub in the rubbing compound

    Thoughts and Reflections

I know some folks are going to think of how bad of an idea this is and how meh the quality is coming out, but honestly for someone with little to no spray painting experience, I felt like everything turned out much better than I imagined it. It's no hydrodipping (maybe that would be a good idea for a monitor?), but it really doesn't look bad at all. If I ever wanted to try to do this again, I would probably try to find someone with a little more spray paint skills than I had to make sure there were no drips and good coverage, or try hydrodipping the frame parts. A couple of thoughts to keep in mind if you try this: 1. The result will not be perfect, just left the factory quality. If you are venturing to try this, know there will be some aspects of homemade that shine through. 2. The more time you put into sanding and polishing in the end directly affects the quality you get out. The final buffs can really get out a good portion of your mistakes if you are a less than stellar spray painter like I was. 3. Figure out a good way to do precision paints. Overall, I wasn't super stoked to scratch up the area by the PREDATOR logo. I may even go back and re-sand/paint again to try to make it look nicer. My suggestion would be to try and scan the logo, then laser cut a pattern to overlay on the logo when you go to paint so you have something really precise. Either that, or use that image to laser cut vinyl for an overlay instead of painting the logo at all. All-in-all, a pretty good result for a custom peripheral and about 8-10 hours of work! 4. This kills your warranty. I bought this used already so I wasn't too concerned about the warranty, but if you bought one brand new you might consider it since you will be exposing the lcd panel which is very fragile if not handled properly.

    4x 1080 TI Setup

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 11:14 AM PDT

I have 4x 1080 TI Hybrids that I use for 3D work, however if I want to connect them via SLI for gaming what is that process?

I know 4 way SLI isn't supported by Nvidia anymore, should I just connect two of them via SLI or maybe have 2x 2-way SLI bridges? I'm not sure what works.

    Thanks for your clarity!

    M.2 drive not showing up.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:15 PM PDT

Hello! I (relatively) recently built a PC that uses two m.2 960 EVO drives. One of them is not showing up at all. I am using a STRIX Z370G micro-atx board. I read on ASUS' website that "the m.2_1 socket shares bandwidth with SATA_1 port when using M.2 SATA mode device. Adjust BIOS settings to use SATA device. " I'd say I am somewhat computer savvy, but I could really use some help here. Thanks in advance!

Upgrading from a gaming laptop to a PC!

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 01:55 PM PDT

    Hey friends,

I will be building my first PC with a budget of around $1000-1500 mainly to play/possibly stream video games such as fortnite and league of legends. I'm not the smartest when it comes to computer stuff but I've done a little research here and there a created a build that I think would suffice. Any feedback, improvements, criticism, comments would be greatly appreciated!

The Great OVERSTOCK.COM Graphics Card Heist!

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:33 PM PDT

I ordered an MSI GTX 1080 Aero with 8GB from Overstock.com (they get their stock from OutletPC.com ). I had ordered from OutletPC.com before with no issues, so it seemed legit. I even paid for Expedited shipping (Next Day Air). I get the package a day later than "Next Day Air" even though I paid for it. Open up the box, open up the sealed in plastic graphics card box... no graphics card! Instead there were two POE injectors, a crescent wrench, and a metal bracket of some sort. This happened on Friday August 3rd. I call their customer support. The guy says "Oh I know you're not happy. I don't blame you. That stinks, I know what a graphics card is... blah blah". He tells me a "special department that deals with this" will be in touch with me either through email or phone withing the next 24 hours. Saturday the 4th, no call, no email. I contact Overstock.com support again on Sunday the 5th. I'm told I will hear from them when my case makes it to them... priority vs non-priority, etc.

At this point I'm MORE than fuming. Monday, August 6th, I get an email from the "special department" that says they started a return process and shipped out a new card. The same card. I respond and ask them "So you want me to send you back the 2 POE injectors ($15 a piece, at best), a $5 crescent wrench, and a $0 metal bracket? Fine." I get the label. I decide to wait until I get my graphics card on Wednesday August 8th before shipping back their precious POE injectors and crescent wrench. Today, Wednesday August 8th, I receive another package from Overstock.com. I open it up and the graphics card box is now wrapped in TWO pieces of plastic. One loose, one shrink-wrapped. As I open the actual graphics card box, I joke to my wife and stepson "This time I'll get a hammer. Maybe I'll have a whole new tool set when this is all said and done." Open the box and what do I find? An HP laptop charger! So yes... the second "card" they send to me is NOT a graphics card. Again.

I call support. Not being very nice this time (out of anger). The nice lady on the other end of the phone put me on hold a few times. She gave me RMA numbers to put on the boxes for the POE injectors, wrench, metal bracket, and now a laptop charger. I agree to send them both back. She says "OK, we will send your card to you when we get those back."

Excuse me? What?? I have been waiting for the graphics card, that I spent a good bit of money on, for a week now (I ordered it on Wednesday August 1st) and you want me to wait even longer? She said that is their policy. I said if I can't get a card over-nighted to me right now then I want my order cancelled.

So what happens next? They cancel my order.

To sum up the consequences, I lost video editing work over this not to mention productivity on a current project (I'm an Indie Filmmaker), but not only did Overstock.com not treat me right, they treated ME like the criminal. I told them that they need to look into their warehouse operations. I bet A LOT of things have disappeared from the boxes in their warehouse. Maybe it's all graphics cards. They are worth a lot to sell (obviously). The Great Overstock.com Graphics Card Heist! Sounds like an interesting film. I bet Tom Cruise would play me.

    Anyway...

Bottom line for me? I will NEVER order anything from Overstock.com again. Strictly Amazon, Newegg, etc.. I highly recommend others to not order from this company either... unless you want a new set of tools (or a laptop charger).

Will an SSD speed up the "saving time" on an application?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 09:41 AM PDT

If there's a lot of data on a project's application, will an SSD help speed up the time it takes to save?

For example an application's saving process takes 5 seconds on a 7200 RPM HDD for that specific project (smaller projects could take less than a second). Will it take a significantly less time to save if it were to save on an SSD? Because of the programs tendency to crash a lot, I have built the habit of hitting ctrl+[s]ave to every time I tweak something and those 5 seconds builds up.

Help with airflow on a high end pc.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 02:52 PM PDT

Hey guys, I've got an nvidia 1070, an intel core i7-7700k and 32 gb of ram.

My problem is that my pc puts out an extreme amount of heat which can result in 4 degress higher temperature in my room. I didn't really care about my airflow when I first got my parts and got a poor pc case.

I've got a budget of around 200€ and would like to upgrade my pc to have the best possible airflow. So a recommendation of what parts to get (how many fans & what new case) would be heavily appreciated. Thank you for your time in ahead.

Can anyone explain to me how you can have low ping but low download speeds and visa versa?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:34 PM PDT

I just cant wrap my head around how. If you can communicate with a server and download stuff at the speed of light but then have a high ping, how could it be a problem with your internet or ISP? Given it's not a software, hardware, or bandwidth hogging issue.

This question stems from peeps complaining about Monster Hunter World not having preloading and they can play but its gonna take them 4 days to download. How could you possibly have a decent ping but have such slow download speeds. ISP throttling your download speeds but still allowing you to "communicate" at a decent speed is the only thing that makes sense.

Also I apologize if this isnt the place to ask this. I'll delete it if so.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:34 PM PDT

    Aorus, Duke, AMP!

Gaming at 4K w a gsync monitor (so, def want nvidia).

I can get them all at the same price. I'm open to other suggestions, but let me know why at least. Did a quick bit of research and these seem like they'll have good, quiet cooling, great out-of-box clocks, and the right power delivery system for some overclocking if needed.

    Help! Thanks

    ISO budget introduction, Streaming PC

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 04:19 PM PDT

Looking to purchase a PC possibly a pre-built, to be used for fortnite and streaming. Hoping to run at high settings above 60fps while streaming and multi tasking on browser.

    BUDGET 750$

I recently came across a cyberpowerpc at best buy that I think seems to meet my requirements at a fair price with room for upgrades. Specs as listed: Intel i5 8400 2.8ghz CPU 8gb DDR4 Memory NVidia GTX 1060 3gb 240gb ssd 2tb hdd + 16gb intel optane (?) Also comes with windows 10 and wifi card The price for this PC at best buy is $579.99

I have a friend that is willing to help me put a pc together that has built one before. So I am open to building one from the ground up but would need guidance as to staying under budget and picking the right parts to meet said requirements.

Let me know what you think if the pre built is worth it, or if anyone could put together a build for me it would be much appreciated :)

Can you upgrade a non-gaming pc to be a decent gaming pc?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 03:57 PM PDT

I'm on a super tight budget (like sub $100 budget) So I'm thinking of going to goodwill and buying a decent pc to upgrade. I'm not going to be running any super intense games just overwatch I'm using the recommended specs for overwatch as a guide so I'm going to put in an AMD phenom X3, probably going to upgrade the ram depending on how much memory it has already and buying an EVGA GT 710 for the GPU. Is this possible? I'm only trying to run overwatch decently so I don't want to buy super good hardware until I can afford it. Will it be possible to upgrade an old goodwill PC or is there something I'm not seeing? Thanks for your help.

Finishing up my build. Just want some suggestions on some parts to finish it off.

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 03:53 PM PDT

All of the parts listed have already been bought. Just want some suggestions on some parts to finish it off.

I plan on doing a light overclock of the i7, so which mobo should I go with? Also which CPU cooler would you recommend?

I want to have an SSD that has Windows on it, and my game files. And an HDD for my media and stuff.

Finally, I really can't decide which case to go with. Don't care about lights, I just want the best case for airflow. Any suggestions on fans?

Any help or feedback on the build would be appreciated. I am not super knowledgeable on the current market and what is best, so this is just something that was thrown together in an afternoon to focus on performance.

LAN Gaming Center Monitor Opinions wanted

    Posted: 08 Aug 2018 03:34 PM PDT

Hey guys, Im in the process of adding a small LAN gaming area to my existing comic book store and Im looking for a general consensus on what people like.

Im not looking for budget opinions or help as I consider myself pretty well versed in doing my own builds etc over the past 20 years, but opinions on what you feel is better for immersion etc is greatly appreciated.

For my own personal preference I LOVE 21:9 ultrawide screen gaming. It was like the upgrade from a normal HDD to SSD in the overall effect it had in my PC pleasures.

What do YOU feel would make the best LAN experience for you? 34" 21:9 monitors with 75hz refresh rates, or do you feel that 27" 144hz with buttery smooth frame rates is where its at?

I personally have taken 4k off the table as I dont feel it provides the "umph" Im looking for.

I want to provide not only that awesome social experience of gaming together in the same room and watching the real life tears of your opponents streaming down their face, but also provide an experience that a lot of gamers dont have at home. Is 1080p really enough to impress anyone even at 144hz these days?

What would make you go WOW! Ive never felt/seen/played like this before? And make you want to repeat the experience.

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!

note: Ive never gamed at 144hz so I have zero input or knowledge on that.
