5 Quick Tl;Dr Android Game Reviews / Recommendations (Episode 70)

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 09:38 AM PDT

Happy Friday, fellow AndroidGamers! Fire-breathing dragons to open-world MMORPGS and beautiful skiing games, I played a bit of everything this week - so here are my 5 mobile gaming recommendations of the week. Enjoy :)

Do you disagree about my opinion on these games? Let's have a friendly discussion below.

New to these posts? Check out the first one from 69 weeks ago here.

The games are "ranked" somewhat subjectively from best to worst, so take the ranking for what it is.

    Let's get to the games!

Hungry Dragon [Game Size: 451 MB] (free)

    Genre: Arcade - Offline

    tl;dr review:

Offline-playable, decently monetized, featuring freakin' fire-breathing dragons, a huge gorgeous 2D world, and interesting enemies...wait, did Ubisoft create an amazing game?

Built on the Hungry Shark core gameplay but swapping undersea shark combat for in-air fantasy battles hit home for a fantasy nerd like myself, and I had a lot of fun with Hungry Dragon this week.

Unlocking new dragons through leveling up existing ones, and getting new helper-pets from dragon eggs feels decently paced, with a monetization that allows us to watch an ad to revive, and iAP to unlock skins and new dragons faster.

World of Prandis [Total Game Size: 463 MB] (free)

    Genre: MMORPG / Roleplaying / Open-world - Online

    tl;dr review:

World of Prandis is the first 3D MMORPG on mobile where I have gotten completely lost in its open world because I was busy exploring, collecting herbs, and slaying enemies... and I loved every second of it!

There are no auto systems, plenty of raids, player-to-player trading, an auction house, six classes and three races. Most noteworthy is the combat system, which offered the most exciting PVE battles I've had in any mobile MMORPG - nothing beats sniping enemies from afar with your bow, getting up close to stun it, switch to daggers to complete a few swift attacks before changing to bow again to finish an elite monster off with a three-arrow combo attack (see the video for an example).

The art-style is fine but not astonishing, all text is horribly translated, and the game allows us to unlock new gear through boxes gathered in-game and through iAP, which means the game might become slightly p2w near cap. Everything considered it still offered the best PvE MMORPG experience I've personally ever had.

Grand Mountain Adventure [Game Size: 119 MB] (free)

Genre: Adventure / Sports - Offline

    tl;dr review:

Although not fully released yet, which means we have no info on the monetization and full gameplay yet, Grand Mountain Adventure seems poised to become a top skiing adventure sports game on mobile.

In the limited-gameplay open beta currently available, we tap either side of the screen to steer and swipe up to perform a quick turn, as we race down tricky slopes in an open world seen from a very unique top-down view with our character moving downwards.

The art style, aesthetics, and open world with hidden collectibles and treasures gives the game a fantastic adventurous feel to it, which truly sets the game apart!

Thunderdogs [Total Game Size: 208 MB] (free)

Genre: Dogfight / Arcade / ".io" / Action - Online

    tl;dr review:

With its great pixel art and intense real-time multiplayer ".io"-style dogfight combat where we shoot down enemy planes and loot their dog treats to ultimately become the "king" of the server, Thunderdogs is a great take on both the .io and air-battle genres.

There are plenty of interesting planes, upgrades, and skins to unlock, which happens through a lootbox-like system that we can spend 100 in-game gold or premium currency to trigger.

Due to the plane upgrades, which impact the strength of our planes, the game is slightly p2w, although the combat madness ensures that everyone has a fair chance regardless of the plane.

    First Impressions / Review: Here

Galaxy Gunner [Total Game Size: 859 MB] (free)

    Genre: Shooter / Sci-fi / Action - Offline

    tl;dr review:

Galaxy Gunner is a casual and 100% mindless action shooter where we stand still and shoot waves of aliens storming towards us, upgrade our weapons, and continue to the next level.

The game is fun as is for a few minutes at a time, but there just isn't a lot to it, and the graphics didn't scale nicely on my big S8+ screen.

The monetization is pushed quite heavily, although it doesn't make the game pay-to-win as it's purely singleplayer, there is no energy system, and we don't seem to hit any real "paywalls".

Hey guys, i want a game that plays "like" CR and Clash of Clans, i mean, games that you need to put something to build in a certain time, or open chests like clash royale. Do not need to be the same style, just something that i need to log in and do some few tasks to progress.

UPDATE: Steam-esque site for mobile games (no purchasing, just cataloging/rating/reviewing). Looking for help!

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 02:32 PM PDT

Hello! I posted a few weeks back about wanting to create a Steam-esque website for mobile games. Somewhere with trusted community-driven ratings/reviews and better cataloging. I've been working on the design/functionality itself and I'd like to recruit the help of anyone that is interested in helping to populate the site initially!

If anyone is interested in helping in any way please PM me, I'll send you a link to the Discord!

[Request] looking for some offline game suggestions on a tablet that are preferably co-op or interactive in some way for an 8 hour flight with the wife. Paid or free is fine.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 05:48 PM PDT

Title pretty much covers it. We are flying to NY tomorrow, I'm a gamer, she is causal. We've enjoyed simple puzzles we can do together like like Where is my Water in the past, Worms has been a hit before as well. Nothing too demanding as the tablet is getting on a bit.

How rampant are paid reviews on the Play Store?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 04:51 AM PDT

Lately I've been enjoying myself by reading reviews of newish games to see what word pops out at me. This morning it was Hungry Dragon, where I counted the word "addicting" in 9 reviews in a row. Devs, how easy and tempting is it to just buy a bunch of paid reviews? I know it's a major issue on amazon for purchases, and I've been using ReviewMeta to filter out as much as possible, but I never really thought about the Play store. I usually don't bother reading reviews, I just go by recommendations from people I trust, but Nimblethors recent MMO game coverage with a 4.8 rating last week made me super interested.

    Highly Compresses Android Games 2018

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 09:37 PM PDT

Due to the slow internet connection, we often find issues while downloading high-graphics games. Downloading stops sometimes when it is about to end. What should be done? The best way to play such games is to download OBB and APK data and manually place it under data directory. It is very simple to do.

However, here is the list of recommended compressed android games to play this year: http://www.tricksntech.com/highly-compressed-android-games/

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 09:36 PM PDT

So I've been playing Art of War 3: Global Conquest quite a lot these past few weeks and am actually very impressed with it. It definitely scratches that C&C RTS itch and ports the gameplay from PC to mobile quite well. The ONLY thing that kill this game for me is the ridiculous, over-the-top, pay-to-win model. They come in the form of 'boosts' that you can purchase and then use in-game to speed up troop training, increase combat stats, etc. Also, I'm fairly certain that the "PvP" mode is actually an AI, but maybe this is just because I'm still low rank.

Anyways, my question is, does anyone know of any games similar to these one where I can get a good RTS experience? I've already played the heck out of Auralux, so refrain from mentioning that please. Thank you for your responses.

Will we ever see Nintendo port classic games to Android?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 07:44 AM PDT

We've gotten some original mobile games but those don't really appeal to me that much. I'd love to see some classic Zelda or Mario titles appear in the play store. Has Nintendo said anything about this? I know I can just emulate them, but I'd rather own the games.

PS4 Bluetooth mini keypad/chatpad and Android question.

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 01:48 PM PDT

It's it possible to use the chatpads that physically connect to the controller (specifically the Bluetooth model chatpads) on Android devices that are running a z-machine or other types of interactive fiction software/emulators?

Strangely this info is not all that easily searched for.

    MMO game that's not P2W

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 04:19 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I know this question has been asked a million time but there are not a lot of recent replies so I'll make it again.

Not before an introduction to my issue! In my early days I used to spend a lot of time in online games with friends (UO, WoW, GW2) but sadly, time is no longer a commodity I have tons to spare and I've become a filthy casual (please don't take it the wrong way, it's what my friends tell me...lol)... however I still like to play games and I've seen myself playing more Android games than computer games, so I came here to make the question.

What is a good MMO game where you can actually interact with others that's not P2W?

In my epic quest I keep reading Toram, so I'm definitely giving it a chance, what else is out there?

I don't mind about microtransactions and I praise and enjoy games like Guild Wars 2 or LoL that have made them for cosmetic purposes but not game breaking like others.

    Thank you!!

Touch input issues due to Android Pie, notch, or my phone?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 10:13 AM PDT

I have an Essential Phone running Android Pie. 90% of the time it functions great, but on certain games (namely PVZ 2 and Command and Conquer Rivals) the touch input is off. All of my presses are shifted to the left, so I need to touch to the right. It's annoying and difficult, but only happens on certain apps.

I've done some research and I'm not sure if it's a problem with my phone, or with the OS in general/how it handles notches. If it's a widespread issue I can wait for a fix, but otherwise I'd rather return my device instead of hoping that it gets fixed one day.

Is anyone else familiar with similar issues? I've seen posters on r/essential and in Play Store reviews mention this.

I have an Android phone and was hoping to use it as a controller for a game that I have on my iPad. Phone is just much lighter and doesn't disrupt the view on the iPad game. Just wondering what virtual gamepad you would recommend. Thanks (Game is Talos principle)

    [DEV] Flamey Boi 1.0 Released

    Posted: 31 Aug 2018 11:42 AM PDT

    [DEV] Flamey Boi 1.0 Released

    Title Screen

Flamey Boi is a work that was done through the summer by Joathrent Studios. We have had it in early access for awhile and have incorporated many changes and additions through this process.

    Check it out here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.JoathrentStudios.FlameyBoiFull

ProTip -- You can make a line then do a small loop at the end (you do not need to circle the enemies to explode them).

The object of Flamey Boi is to burn up enemies using your fire trail. If your fire trail makes a loop then it explodes all of the hex tiles it is touching.

There are many enemy types, some are immune to fire, some immune to explosions.

We created three game modes. Originally we made an endless mode which you continually get harder and harder waves of enemies and are then able to compete on the leader board. The next game mode is a campaign mode which has specific levels to progress through. And lastly we have challenges which have unique objectives rather than the typical kill all the enemies.

We hope you enjoy it and please let us know how we can improve!
