Proper settings for lower latency Posted: 31 Aug 2018 12:35 PM PDT Hey guys, just got my network set up . I have decent speeds (paying for 150, just tested at 172 ish). I'm wondering if anyone can reccomend the best router settings to tamper with for an avid gamer. I'm new to this so any reccomendations would be appreciated. My NAT is Open and I having had a lag issue thus far but my ping is still like 47 ish , which I feel could be lower. I'm using a netgear router and a netgear modem. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2018 05:32 PM PDT My ISP blocks imgur and other hosting sites so reddit has become what seems like a graveyard of dead links for me. After a little research i find its the isp blocking the sites through their own (shite) dns servers. Cool, so i log onto my Trendnet (TEW812-DRU) router to solve the issue. Only to find even under advanced user settings there is no option to manually change the DNS server - well, that is a bit of a white lie infact - because there is; but only under the DCHP connection type. My ISP uses PPPoE, and the option for DNS server subsequently goes away once PPPoE is chosen. I've looked into every tab (lan settings, wan settings etc etc) and it is nowhere to be found apart from when DCHP is selected. Does anyone know how to remedy this? I can't find any answers online. Seems this issue is specific to the router as others on my ISP (vodafone, UK) with different routers have manually changed their DNS without issue. Any help is appreciated, Thanks! USB-C Hub says it has 5Gbps Ethernet - thoughts? Posted: 31 Aug 2018 02:09 PM PDT I saw this USB-C hub claims 5Gbps Ethernet: https://www.amazon.com/VAVA-Adapter-Ethernet-Charging-MacBook/dp/B07FKJ2KRH/ Does anybody know if this actually works? What support do you need on the switch side to use it? If you have 10GBASE-T switch (i.e. 10GBE Ethernet) will that work with this? Any speculation on what chipset they might be using, or what the performance would be like? [link] [comments] |
Improving wifi coverage in a new rental unit Posted: 31 Aug 2018 08:20 PM PDT We just moved into the bottom unit of a duplex, two floors, 2,000 sq. ft. I have a Netgear CM1000 cable modem (155 Mbps down with RCN) and an ASUS RT-AC66U router plugged into it. Well, it's supposed to be 155, but I've been hitting 250-300 on my iOS devices in the same room as the router, we'll see if that lasts. Anyway, router is located at one end of the unit on the top floor, but by the time you get to the bedroom at the other end of the unit on the bottom floor, you're maybe getting 3 Mbps if you get any kind of connection at all. Since this is a rental I don't have a good idea of how thing are wired and I can't really make any significant changes to the wiring of the unit. I've seen some recommendations on here for the Netgear Orbi Mesh system. Netgear recommends the AC2200 RBK30 version of their system given the size of my house and my needs. Really at most we'll have two people streaming video at once, either on an iOS device (iphone/iPad/Apple TV) or a hardwired PC. So nothing too crazy. Are there other solutions I should strongly consider? Seems like a mesh solution would be the most practical based on what I've read but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks in advance for your advice. Using different subnet for some devices on lan Posted: 31 Aug 2018 07:36 PM PDT Hello all, I have Tp-Link Archer C7 v4 router and Im super new with this subnet and static routing thing and I believe I am making some mistake somewhere and would be glad if someone can point me to a direction. My router & subnet is on 192.168.0.1, DHCP hands out IP addresses between 192.168.0.10-192.168.0.199, no problem with that. But I want some device on my network to use different subnet as 192.168.3.10 (for example). I know that I can use static IP on client side to do this, but then that device can't reach to internet nor ping other devices on lan (except router). So I created a static routing (I think I made few mistakes with that) which can be seen here : https://imgur.com/a/0OYMeaQ My devices on 192.168.0.1 subnet can't ping the client on 192.168.3.0 and returns timeout error. I can ping the router ip from my client on 192.168.3.0 subnet but can't access to internet nor ping devices on 192.168.0.1 subnet Perhaps there is some setting Im missing or doing static routing wrong but I couldn't figure it as Im quiet new at this. Posted: 31 Aug 2018 06:54 PM PDT Recently i managed to resurrect my old router and install open wrt on it. So far i've set it to a subnet and connected it wirelessly to the main router running stock firmware. The internet on laptop 2 works, and i can connect via ssh or ping the other clients (like the Raspberry pi or the main pc) But i cannot access my files shares, or SSH into the laptop on the second router. I'm assuming that i have to set up a port forward. But i can't even access the router page from the main PC by pointing at the routers location on the network. Using my mad paint skills i make a crude picture of the set up along with the router base addresses. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2018 05:23 AM PDT Hello Everyone, So my current setup is a PC with a TP-Link WiFi donge that connects with the modem. The PC and the modem are on the opposite sides of the room so cable is out of the question. I want to scrap that donge, because it constanty drops the signal. I also have a spare Archer C50 router. My question is: Is it possible to connect the Archer router to my PC through cable and the router receive the connection from the modem? This is what I mean: Modem<----WiFi---->Router<==Cable==>PC Is this setup viable? Thank you for your help! [link] [comments] |
WD MyCloud connection with TL-SG108E Gigabit switch and multiple PCs Posted: 31 Aug 2018 02:36 PM PDT Hello r/HomeNetworking community, I tried to connect multiple PCs to my TL-SG108E and my WD MyCloud with 2TB (I think its the first gen) for a fast Gigabit access to the MyCloud from every system connected to the switch. I hooked all the devices up and gave them IP adresses ranging from 192.168.0.1 (the switch) to 192.168.0.6 while 192.168.0.3 is my MyCloud. After trying out a lot I found out that when I can click the MyCloud shortcut from one of the PCs it loads for a long time and when I open the MyCloud WebUI on another connected PC it works and I can access the files with Gigabit speed. When I don't open the WebUI, the PC I tried to open the MyCloud folder with tells me that it couldnt connect. Also the WebUI is very slow and I only have the MyCloud shortcuts for the folders in the Windows Explorer of two PCs and not all four. What I can always see and access is the WebUI shortcut in the Windows Explorer and in a browser. It seems like a MyCloud issue since it doesnt make that much sense that it only loads when I open the WebUI on another PC. Though it all works pretty well when the devices are connected to my router and not the switch. I hope you understand the me and can help. I'd appreciate it! :) Thanks in advance, [link] [comments] |
Hard wiring from a router in the basement Posted: 31 Aug 2018 05:59 PM PDT TL;DR: are there any issues with putting my router in the furnace room in my basement and running two cat5 wires over about 20 feet to my Xbox and desktop? So my fiber modem is in the furnace room in the basement. The people that installed it ran a cat five wire up into the garage and through the wall into the living room where we have our router next to our desktop. From that router I have an Ethernet cable running across a bit of floor to the entertainment console and hard wired to my Xbox and a small Ethernet cable running from the router to my desktop. Only two hard wired devices and no desire to add another. In an effort to clean up the desk and not have a cable running across or floor, I'm thinking of putting the router in the basement, hijaking the already run cat 5, and running a new wire over the same route that I will punch through the wall from the garage into the living room. Are there any issues with: A) keeping my router in a furnace room like that B) running two long wires from the basement to devices into the living room? Hopefully that's clear. Please let me know if something isn't. [link] [comments] |
Best solution for extending wifi signal through house? Posted: 31 Aug 2018 11:58 AM PDT I'm in a 2 story house with the router/modem placed in the first floor bedroom. The second story bedrooms (especially on the other side of the house) struggle with getting good speeds. What's the best (cheapish) solution for this? I've been reading about access points and mesh systems but I'm not sure I understand them fully. It's not possible to run ethernet in the house so I if it's possible to have an access point upstairs that'd be optimal. I currently have gigabit internet with Xfinity and am using their xFi Gateway. Their xFi pods look like a decent plug and play answer but if there's a better solution I'd be happy to hear about it. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Confused about how Velop interacts with combo modem/routers Posted: 31 Aug 2018 11:55 AM PDT To begin, my goal is to run my gateway in bridge mode and have the Velop be the router as well as broadcast WiFi. When I first set up my Velop system (2 nodes, one parent and one child) I put the gateway in bridge mode, then began setup via the iOS app. One of the early steps asks if you have a single modem, or combo modem-router. This perplexed me, given I technically have a combo, but routing capabilities are turned off. So I chose single modem. This did not work. I reset the Velop and tried again, and chose combo and it seemed to work but I've been having lots of connection problems between the Velop and the modem. My question is what's the correct process for this setup? Do you put your gateway in bridge mode before setting up the nodes, or after? If before, do you choose single or combo device during setup? Doing it after gives you double NAT, I assume. How do other mesh systems like eero and Amplifi handle this? They automate the setup to be simple, so are most users running a network with double NAT? Posted: 31 Aug 2018 05:23 PM PDT I just purchased my new home and I would like to upgrade my home network. The house was built in the 1960's. I recently signed up for XFINITY internet and TV, there is gig service available but I only signed up for 150/5 as it I currently is just me and my wife. I have already purchased an ARRIS Surfboard SB8200. I currently have a Netgear N600 wireless router, dual band gigabit WNDR3700, purchased in 2011. My previous set up was directly connecting my two gaming rigs to the router, as well as my ARLO station for 2 wireless cameras. Also at my previous residence I had 2 "smart" TVs connected to the WIFI as well as one TV with a set top box. Since I now own a home, I would like to directly connect the TV's with Ethernet. I have done a little research and currently plan to purchase the following: UBIQUITI USG UBIQUITI UNIFI SWITCH 8 60w UBIQUITI UNIFI CLOUD KEY UBIQUITI UAP-AC-PRO-E, one additional in the future Below are the following items that we plan connect to the wifi: 2 cellphones 2 NEXX garage door openers Wifes labtop Wifes tablet RING doorbell Please see the link for a layout of my house and a plan for the home network. My new house has an attic, I believe coax is ran through the attic and down the walls to their outlets. I am also curious where I would look (contractor) for having someone add additional coax and Ethernet cables. I am also planning to replace the electrical panel from a 125A to 200A service, move the meter out of the garage, add 220V circuit to garage, add receptacles in laundry room, add receptacles in office. Would it be easiest for an electrician to do all this electrical work and running home networking cables? I work at an electrical utility and was planning to ask one of the electricans to do the electrical work. Any feedback and recommendations for my home network and electrical work would be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Hey guys need some help with isolating IP addresses(noob) Posted: 31 Aug 2018 01:34 PM PDT Ill try to explain this as best as possible. Help would be appreciated. I recently got a 1GB download/upload business internet with 5 static IP addresses, from my knowledge the only way to isolate the static ip address is to buy a switcher(dont know which kind managed/unmanaged) and from there i need 5 routers to connect to the switcher so each router gives off a different IP through the configuration. Unless theres a Modem that can create 5 wifi networks, but in the end I dont know if the modem can handle the load. I will be connecting over 100 to 200 devices it will have to be all wireless. So for example, I have 5 laptops I want each laptop to have its own separate ip address to connect to the internet I do not need file sharing or anything like that, and it has to be wireless. The Wireless network should show on the list: Telus2111 (for example when connecting to this one the ip is 154.1.22.134) Telus2112 (for example when connecting to this one the ip is 154.1.22.150) Telus2113 (for example when connecting to this one the ip is 154.1.22.160) Telus2114 (for example when connecting to this one the ip is 154.1.22.164) Telus2115 (for example when connecting to this one the ip is 154.1.22.170) Is there another way to approach this with the least amount of effort and devices and wiring and such? I did speak to the technical support guys but I dont know if hes right or wrong, he told me to buy a sonicwall router(1000 dollar range) which has multiple mac address chips in them. My ISP said the IP addresses are attained online through their software by assigning mac addresses. My isp modem is Actiontec T3200M Bonded VDSL2 Modem and 802.11ac Wireless Router And as always thanks for all the help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2018 05:19 PM PDT Hello all, I'm looking for a replacement modem for my ISP's modem/router combo. They told me I just needed a DOCSIS 3.0 modem and I ordered this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OMDZAV0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and it does not work. My current modem/router combo from my ISP is arris TG2472G. Does anyone know of an equivalent modem I could purchase? Edit: I'm with TDS in utah [link] [comments] |

Refurbished Nighthawk AC1900 vs New Nighthawk AC1900: New one is slower/difficulties Posted: 31 Aug 2018 11:49 AM PDT The two Nighthawk AC1900 I have right now: I was using the GS-Refurb one for a while, it was $100 and it came with the AP, which I never used. Then I moved, which I admittedly screwed up the Ethernet wiring I wanted for the house. I was forced to go with: Modem-> Edgerouter X -> split to Apple TV/AC1900 --- AC1900 -> to PLEX server/computers Now this is where I started having Double NAT problems. I was told to put the AC1900 into AP mode. But after download the updated firmware for the GS-Refurb AC1900, I cannot find the AP mode. (I looked everywhere and the manual does not reflect what options I have in the router setup.) I bought the new AC1900, and I put that in AP mode. Now I am having problems with poor wifi signal and then some difficulties with connecting to it. It is in the same exact spot as the old AC1900. I am going to mess with it some more today, I will have to log into the Edgerouter X and find out the ip address for the AC1900, since the routerlogin.com won't work anymore to get me into the router settings. Do you guys think I am missing anything which would give me such bad signal and connection difficulties? I am thinking about going to AI Mesh with ASUS. Since MicroCenter has an instore deal for $200 plus tax you get two AC68U AC1900. ASUS AC68U AC1900 [link] [comments] |
Doing research on security camera setup for my house, have a networking question... Posted: 31 Aug 2018 03:14 PM PDT I'm going to have three outdoor cameras which will be connected to a managed POE switch in the garage which will in turn be plugged into my router. I'm going to have an internal non-internet VLAN for the cameras and computer running the software. I was also going to block all outgoing traffic from each camera's MAC address because I'm looking at some possibly sketchy Chinese ones. I was also going to get a second network adapter for the computer so it would be able to connect the software to my main network so it could be viewed over the internet via mobile app. Could I just allow the VLAN internet access, block ONLY the cameras, and still have the computer be able to connect to the cameras AND to be connected to by the app over the internet? Basically, do I need that second NIC? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2018 03:00 PM PDT As the title suggests...Dumb question We've been noticing that our WiFi has been used a lot this month but we had a couple parties so we're blaming it on that but i want to try to use less WiFi "data" anyway. So here's my question, if i plug my ps4 into the router using an Ethernet, will that use Xfinity's 1 terabyte WiFi Data? Thanks for any help. [link] [comments] |
Upgrading wifi package to 400 megabit, though stuck with a lot of legacy equipment Posted: 31 Aug 2018 11:09 AM PDT So in our area, they just released a new internet package advertised as 400 Mbps, though due to a state lawsuit they actually send closer to 470 megabit through according to reviewers. The problem? Not very much of our current hardware can support these speeds. My primary network switch that I've been using for a while is only a 10/100, not gigabit, which would cap us to 1/4 of our bandwith. Most of our wifi devices also are wireless B/G/N only (with some still being B/G only) which from what I read up, has a max theoretical speed of around 350 megabit, which is still below the 400 megabit advertised speed. So what would we have to upgrade to utilize the full network speed we will be paying for? Yes this is copy/pasted from my post on another subreddit, as I originally posted in the wrong one. Advantages of IPv6 tunnel, and using IPv6 internally in 2018? Posted: 31 Aug 2018 02:19 PM PDT I did search, but a lot of the posts are older, so curious if things have changed recently. However, they do offer IPv6 tunnels (via HE, I believe). We're running pfSense on the routing side. Client machines are mostly either MacOS, or mobile devices, we also have public guest wifi. What advantages do we have by setting up the IPv6 tunnel? And if we use IPv6 internally as well on the LAN - what advantages does that confer? Is it possible to route internally between IPv6 and IPv4 networks? [link] [comments] |
Computer Can’t See Through Switch Posted: 31 Aug 2018 10:03 AM PDT I have a Fios Quantum Gateway modem/router, and have recently gotten a couple more things that would really run best/easiest off of Ethernet. Now I have more devices than I do open Ethernet ports on the router. I picked up a network switch (a TP-Link 5-port Gigabit unmanaged switch) to accommodate those new devices, thinking that the three on my desk would best run from that switch. Those devices can now access the internet, but other devices on my network cannot see them, and vice versa. What am I doing wrong? I don't know enough about networking to even know what settings I need to be checking. Any help would be greatly appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Aug 2018 09:25 AM PDT I have a somewhat unusual situation that I'm hoping you can help with. There's a park at the end of my block, accessible only by houses on the street, that I'd like to figure out a way to get wifi service to. It's a fairly small park (lot isn't small enough to build a house on), so a single AP will likely be enough. My concern is figuring out how to get internet access to the AP and what AP to use. So far I've come up with the following options, but I'm wondering if there's something I'm not thinking of.
For options 1 and 2 is there an easy way to keep the park internet traffic separate from the home's traffic (both for security and to limit the impact on the home owner)? Hopefully without having to purchase too much in the way of equipment. I'm sure there are lots of things I'm not thinking of, so I hope someone here has done something similar and can give me the benefit of their experience. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2018 08:41 PM PDT Hi all, I'm looking for your advice/input on if you think the modem and router I'm going to purchase along with the download speed of my ISP (Comcast) is sufficient for my needs (Xbox Live gaming on the Xbox One X). Modem: ARRIS SURFboard SB6141 8x4 DOCSIS 3.0 ($43.36 on Amazon) Router: TP-Link AC900 ($34.99 on Amazon) ISP: Comcast Xfinity, 60 Mbps down, $40/month for 12 months, no contract Based on the research I've done and my understanding of home networking, this setup seems more than sufficient. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Sophos UTM home made router doubling as NAS Posted: 31 Aug 2018 10:55 AM PDT I am planning on building my own Sophos UTM router. While I'm looking at the parts needed I was wondering whether the same unit can double as NAS as well. If yes, I might need to go with a bigger ITX case which can support the 3.5" drives. I am aware that many of you will say to keep those things apart, but I would just like to know whether I can setup the NAS through Sophos UTM. Somehow it feels better to have just one large box for all my networking needs, than several smaller ones. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Correct placement of Managed and Unmanaged Switch Posted: 31 Aug 2018 08:33 AM PDT I need assistance understanding the correct placement of a managed switch in my home network in order to setup proper vlans. 26 addresses are on the network at any given time. Where do I insert the managed switch and can I keep the 24 port dumb switch? What plugs into the Managed switch?
