Posted: 30 Jul 2018 12:55 PM PDT Been trying to wrap my head around why my Windows 7 PC is struggling with speeds. I get reasonable results from speed tests but when I do an actual download test, I am getting a micro fraction of the speed I should be. I have a Windows 10 Nuc and my Windows 7 PC connected in my office to the same 5 port switch. That switch is connected via a wall port that goes to my basement switch. Running a wget on a 200mb file, I get about 20MB/s download from the Windows 10, but only 570kb on my Windows 7. The results for Windows 7 are similar with both wired and wireless. I performed an IPERF test between the 2 machines and got the following results: I then ran an internet health test with the results side by side I am on the latest RealTek ethernet controller drivers. I am going to try starting in safe mode with networking this evening to see if that gives me different results. The link speed of my adaptor seems to correctly be recognized as gigabit. https://imgur.com/a/tKlqWJy EDIT - Safe mode + networking did not make a difference. I also halted several things at startup thinking they would help. They did not. I tried setting my duplex to 1gig full..did nothing. I uninstalled AMD software, did nothing. I did boot up in Mint Linux live off a USB...that actually did give me full download speeds, I saw 20MB/s down with a wget. I have 2 other Dell laptops in my household that run this copy of Windows 7 64bit Ultimate (it's an unlimited license) and those computers do "not" have an issue with download speeds. My machine is the only one. [link] [comments]
Is it possible to make programs running on Windows Server 2016 think they're running on Windows 10? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 07:39 PM PDT I have a server running Win Server 2016 and my dad really likes Win Server better than Win 10 because it doesn't have a lot of the annoyances (updates, antivirus, etc.). He wants to use it as a desktop operating system (which it is perfectly capable of doing), but a few programs he runs (I think the main one is either SAS or STATA) require the enterprise licenses to run because they assume they're being run in a corporate server production enviornment. Is there any way to trick these programs into thinking it's regular Win 10? Thanks. [link] [comments]

Windows 10, trying to connect to a machine, but Windows won't forget its old DHCP ip address Posted: 30 Jul 2018 01:42 PM PDT If I try to connect to an computer on my network named "Pooter", windows 10 trys to connect to 192.168.1.50 which is its old address, rather than the new one. I've tried doing ipconfig /release, and the "network reset" in the gui. I'm having this issue on multiple windows computers [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 07:32 PM PDT The reason I want this is because I use a program to edit videos, and for some reason leftover processes continue running after I close the program. I aim to use something that can track when I close the original program and kill any excess processes that it leaves behind. I have looked in task scheduler, but I couldn't find anything having to do with performing an action when a program closes. I tried using the Shutter program to do this, but I couldn't quite get it right. [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Jul 2018 07:03 AM PDT Any way to remove the logo and spinning wheel to show text or logs about what its working on? We do lots of PXE booting, and where there are issues during installation, its almost impossible to know what is happening. Does windows offer any way to remove that, like linux/esx, so we can see what its actually doing? [link] [comments]

Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:48 AM PDT Earlier I posted about a PC I wanted to upgrade to Windows 10. Most replies said I should go to Win10 because it works with 2GB RAM and one reply said I should only go to Win7 because Win10 runs poorly on old hardware. Original Specs: 2GB DDR2 800MHz Intel Celeron 450, 2.2 GHz Intel G31/G33 Express Chipset, 288 MB Windows Vista Home Basic x86 500 GB HDD BIOS: 1.0.18 I want to transform this PC to one that can play games like 60fps minecraft - no stutter like I was on the OG specs, BeamNG.Drive, or Cities Skylines etc. Step by step plan:
GPU is going to be a GTX 1050 Ti until further notice and remind me if there's a more powerful CPU I can put in this system and what version of Win10 should I use. {home or pro} Thanks for supporting this PC with Windows Vista before I have to go to Windows 10. [link] [comments]
1080 Not Showing In Task Manager Posted: 30 Jul 2018 02:46 PM PDT I recently had to wipe my SSD and reinstall windows. Now my GPU is not showing in my task manager. My driver model is WDDM 2.1 and I haven't the most up to date drivers for my GPU. Any suggestions? Can't seem to find anything beyond checking what I mentioned. [link] [comments]
Taskbar changes colour when laptop is idle. Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:55 AM PDT I just re-installed Win 7 on my laptop (Lenovo) and noticed that when the laptop is idle for couple of mins (and the display dims), the taskbar changes colour - it basically becomes brighter. When I move the cursor it immediately goes back to normal. Any idea why this is happening? I've disabled transparency from the personalisation settings. I am also running the latest GeForce drivers. Thank you and appreciated. [link] [comments]

What is the best browser for tablet mode on a surface? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:33 AM PDT The standard chrome and edge are pretty terrible for when I'm in tablet mode. The buttons are too small for touch and its all in all not a good experience. [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:32 AM PDT Is there a way to add keys to my computer that only really exist in the programming? For example my Logitech Gaming mouse has extra buttons such as "G1", "G2", etc. but they each have a job that can already be accomplished with my keyboard such as "Play/Pause". I am a gamer and already use the "Play/Pause" key as a keybind in most of my games. Can I make the mouse actually broadcast "G1" to my computer instead of broadcasting "Play/Pause"? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 08:50 AM PDT So I recently purchased a 128 GB m.2 SSD for my laptop and I plan on using it as my boot drive along side my 1 tb hard drive for miscellaneous storage. Now the issue I'm having is the migration process. I have emptied my hard drive to the point where it now only has 90 GB worth of data which should easily fit into a 128 GB SSD right? nope. according to Macrium Reflect it says that I have insufficient space and cloning is not possible. I"m stomped on how to proceed forward. I feel as if the issue lies within the partitions on my hard drive. If anyone could help me choose which partitions are the correct ones to copy I would be forever in their debt as I've been stuck with this migration problem for a very long time. If screenshots are needed let me know and I will provide them. Cheers. EDIT: Here's the image for Macrium Reflect partitions window image [link] [comments]

It was that lol, DON'T DO IT FOR A MINUTE ! LET SWITCH EVERY 30 Mins ! [link] [comments] |
