Work Network Nightmare - I don't know which router is the DHCP Posted: 30 Jul 2018 02:50 PM PDT Hey all, I took over an IT position for a small business. I've been trying to access the wireless settings in order to update the passwords and other settings. I can't connect to it using the default gateway that I get from ipconfig. So I took one of the routers and reset to factory default. It defaulted to 192.168.1.x. However, our hardwired network utilizes 192.168.5.x. When I try to change the reset router to 192.168.5.x, it "accepts" it, but then when I run ipconfig i notice its setting it to a 10.x.x.x. IP and overriding the setting. I'm guessing this is because there is some kind blocking going on by whatever router is the acting DHCP - it doesn't want a second DHCP enabled router connecting or something to that IP, I don't know. If I try to disable DHCP on the router, then I lose access to it and have to do another factory reset. Right now the only thing I can think of is taking the wireless network down entirely and doing a factory reset on every router. I really don't want to do this because there isn't even a guarantee that it would fix the problem, and it would cause huge disruption. Looking for any suggestions you guys have. Ask me if you need more information. [link] [comments] |
Need advice in buying a new router! Help a novice out Posted: 30 Jul 2018 05:50 PM PDT Hi r/homenetworking I believe it is time to upgrade my hardware. I have concluded that my router can no longer handle the number of devices in the house. Lately I've had to frequently restart the router to make a connection with various devices – sometimes multiple times in one night. I believe the router I have is 8+ years old and that means it does not have the latest wireless protocol available. What recommendations do you have for my home network? Links to any resources is greatly appreciated! Current hardware:

How many devices will be connected on average, and what will they be used for?

I was considering ASUS (RT-AC86U) but I am open to suggestions! Thank you for any help you can provide! [link] [comments] |
Help! Spectrum switched me from Arris modem to Ubee and Cisco ASA 5505 is not working Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:20 AM PDT Hey guys! I could really use your help as I have been fighting this for 2 days and still have no working internet connection... I am using a cable modem from Spectrum (Time Warner) made by Arris. It died yesterday morning and I was given a Ubee router as they were out of pure modems. I called in to activate and have it switched to bridged mode. But that's where things get ugly... I have a Cisco ASA 5505 behind the modem and in the past I normally just reconnect the modem if I have to do a modem swap due to it dying. But now, the new Ubee device gives a 71.73.113.* address to my ASA via DHCP as before, but the ASA cannot ping outbound or get any traffic out at all. But if I plug a laptop to another port on the modem, I get a 65.185.* address - a totally different pool - and the laptop works fine. I have tried setting my ASA to the same IP address that my laptop gets assigned, but that doesn't work. I've tried manually adding default gateway routes to the ASA as assigned to the laptop, and that does nothing either. I don't even know how to proceed and I'm losing my mind. Please tell me someone has an idea of what I should do next! [link] [comments] |
I'm trying to bridge my connections and use a vpn for both devices, having trouble. Posted: 30 Jul 2018 03:13 PM PDT I am currently bridging my computer and my xbox one (or pc for trouble shooting). My computer is getting internet wirelessly and i'm briding the connection through a crossover or ethernet cable. Both seem to work, but only if my vpn is not active on my main computer. The reason I am using a vpn is because my isp throttles me if I do not and I want to download a game that is 65gigs. This will take me 1 week (yes actually) if I do not use a vpn. Well, at least I think the vpn will work since it works when i download large files on my computer where they throttle me there too. The vpn I am using is Private internet access. If there is another route available that could work, even for some small change, I will consider it. Well: Solved it myself soon after posting this. I got rid of the bridging first. I right clicked my VPN's network adapter and made it allow sharing to my local area connection (the one that belongs to my ethernet port) and now when I'm connected to the vpn on my computer, I will get internet to my xboxone/2ndary pc which is routed through the vpn. Yay! When not connected to the vpn, I won't get any internet, which is for the best really. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 07:50 PM PDT I rent a room in my house to a grad student. He likes to game, no big deal. He was complaining about lag, and he would like an ethernet cable. I'd rather not have to lock down my network, and having him on an isolated WiFi accomplishes this easily. If I get him a 5G WiFi adapter, will his lag reduce and improve gaming? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 07:44 PM PDT Hi, Spectrum installed their new Gig service today and it comes with a new router and modem as well. I'm trying to use port forwarding in the router and it doesn't seem to be working. I saved the settings, and rebooted the router, and the computer. But it doesn't seem to be applying. It's clearly saved in the router. As you can see here: https://i.imgur.com/t2mOYyr.png To check, I'm using port checker: https://i.imgur.com/t3uBU0j.png Which says, for instance, 24800 is closed. So...now what do I do? Or am I doing something wrong? [link] [comments] |
Site to Site vs Remote Access VPN Posted: 30 Jul 2018 07:33 PM PDT I have two locations A and B, and one device at B needs to connect to a server at A, but it can't run a vpn client on it. There is already an OpenVPN server running on the router at A that I use to remotely connect from my laptop. I'm trying to figure out if there's any difference between creating a site to site VPN between the two locations, vs running an OpenVPN client on the router at B to connect to the server at A. Is the difference that in the case of the remote access VPN, only the router at B gets a single IP on the network at A, vs individual devices? And what are the advantages/disadvantages of each? Help? Continuously being booted off! Posted: 30 Jul 2018 05:29 PM PDT So, for months now my mom has been threatening me with some mysterious function she somehow acquired on her phone where she can just entirely negate my gaming console's access to the wi-fi. Turns out I'm terrible at networking... help? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 04:51 PM PDT So I have a tplink archer cr500 modem/router that just doesn't quite provide consistent signal to the room over my garage that serves as my home office. Today I fought my netgear r6250 router all day to get it to serve as a repeater. Installed dd-wrt, followed all the instructions, sold my soul to satan, and still no internet. The signal from the repeater is strong out where I need it, though. So my questions are: 1) Should I keep fighting this thing or just get a power line Ethernet and use the router on the other end? 2) are there any great step by step guides to setting my second router as a repeater? 3) if I should just do the power line Ethernet, will the fact that it's a 100 year old house with old electrical effect that? Thanks in advance gang! EDIT: I don't need high speed, just consistent connection for work. And I'll need to vpn into my work network, so anything that would disrupt that vpn is a nonstarter. Ethernet Port not assigning IP Posted: 30 Jul 2018 04:10 PM PDT I am having trouble with a particular wall outlet in my apartment. It doesn't seem to be DHCP enabled...I'm not sure if that makes sense but here's some context on my setup.
Things I have tried:
Results are always Network cable unplugged or Unidentified Network, testing with both desktop and laptops. Interesting note: If I assign a static IP, and then go into the modem settings (WiFi works on the laptop still), it will show the static IP and then show Not Active. Again, running both devices directly into the modem works fine. Laptop in other outlets work fine. I've done hours of Googling and running through the basic steps, including all the netsh stuff. What's frustrating is that I had this issue a bit over a year ago with an older PC, and fixed that through a lot of tweaking the settings. I have a new PC now and naturally wiped the old drive for the new PC without saving any settings, and can't get it back to working. So I know the port can work, I just don't know how. If it helps, my old PC was Windows 7 and the new is Windows 10, as is the laptop. My ISP says I will need an electrician to check the wall outlet, and before I pay the likely expensive fee, I wanted to check if there's anything else I should do. [link] [comments] |

xfinitywifi hotspot ssid not showing up as a connection on laptop anymore. Still shows up on iPhone. Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:35 AM PDT I've been connecting to the "xfinitywifi" hotspot on my personal laptop at work for months now. I use my Comcast credentials to log in and use the internet. One day I left my laptop at work over night. When I came back in the next morning it was no longer connected and the SSID doesn't show up when I search for it. My first assumption was they just disabled the hotspot. They did not, i checked. Also, the connection still shows up on everyone's iPhones here and I connect to it with my iPhone. My laptop is running Windows 8.1 (unfortunately). Please help. I can't provide any other information requested. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:55 AM PDT I need a VPN tunnel to my office NAS, which holds all of our files. I'm tired of using FTP to remotely access files. Mainly, it's a hassle to download files, work on them and then upload them back to the NAS. Somebody could be working on said file at the same time in the office, then what? Somebody could forget to upload the file back to the FTP...These are the main issues. Problem seems to be a double NAT on the network. I tried the VPN server and could not get L2TP/IPSEC to work on Win10. PPTVP worked fine but isn't secure so it's out of the question. I'd like it to work natively with Win10 so the office NAS shows up as a network drive on the PC, wherever it is located, internal or external of the network. I don't want to have to install third party VPN software on employee machines. Some say Win10 VPN is simply broken but I'm not sure. Is this possible? Willing to swap out the Asus router for a new Ubiquity USG and switch if it'll make it easier. Asus N66 is a little long in the tooth now. It's running Merlin. Should modem speed and router speed match? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:53 AM PDT I can't believe I can't find the answer to this question anywhere! If I have the 250Mbps plan from my ISP (Comcast) and a 250Mbps modem, is a 250Mbps router all I need? Or would there be benefits to getting a faster router? It seems like many routers are rated at speeds way faster than 250Mbps, like 1900Mbps. What I can't figure out is if that extra speed will simply never be used because the modem is capped at 250Mbps, or if - since multiple people will be using the router at the same time, some for online gaming - the extra speed in the router will be put to good use. Thank you! EDIT: Happy with the answers I've received! [link] [comments] |
Issue regarding TP-Link Archer C7 as Repeater Posted: 30 Jul 2018 02:36 PM PDT Hello everyone, I apologize if I'm posting in the wrong sub, just let me know and I'll post it elsewhere. I recently moved into a place which already had their own internet provider, modem, and router. They're using a TekSavvy Modem (SmartRG SR-516AC) bridged to a TP-Link Archer C5 router. The router is broadcasting a 2.5 and 5 Ghz signal with no issues (We'll called them Slow 1 and Fast 1). However the signal DOES NOT reach the basement where I am located. It will reach directly under the router but move even one room over and I have mediocre-at-best reception. As a result, 2 months ago I purchased a TL-Link Powerline adapter, and hooked it up beside their router, then down to the basement. I ensured I received a strong connection (They have 50 Mbps directly from modem, I'm receiving 38 Mpbs in the basement through this connection), and then set it up so that my router from where I was (This is the Archer C7 in the title) was set up to be a repeater. I have it broadcasting my old SSID's from my old residence, so it's broadcasting 2 completely different named connections (We'll call them Slow 2 and Fast 2). For about 2 months, everything went great, no issues, and my phones/laptops would just switch automatically based on what room I was in. Yesterday, my girlfriend purchased a new laptop and attempted to set it up on her own. In the process, it asked her for a wifi name/password. She connected to the router (C7/repeater) I have down here, to my 5 Ghz connection (Fast 2) since it's almost directly beside her. It "connected" and then immediately disconnected saying it couldn't find the signal. Immediately after, my phone and all other devices lost connection with this signal, and it suddenly could no longer be found on any devices. It was as if my router had completely stopped broadcasting. Upon checking the LED lights at the front, it showed the signal should still be being broadcast, but nothing could find it. Since then, I checked the setting and it says it should still be broadcasting. I can only get it to broadcast so that it's viewable and connectable to other devices by shutting down the router (C7) and then rebooting it. Restarting the primary router (C5) or doing a restart on the modem seem to have no effect and do not assist in repairing this issue. Does anyone know why this is occurring, and how to fix it? Thanks in advance. TL;DR: My router is set up as a repeater. It's 5Ghz broadcast is mysteriously disappearing even though the router says it's still broadcasting. Cannot find the issue, only solution is to restart repeater. [link] [comments] |
Modem/Router Combo doesn't go into Bridged Mode Posted: 30 Jul 2018 02:19 PM PDT Hello! I hope that you are all doing great. I have a Modem/Router from my local ISP. It is a SmartRG SR630n. I'm trying to set it on Bridged Mode to pass the DSL signal into my Linksys EA2700, and have that manage all of the QoS, NAT and DHCP. The problem is that the Modem does not go into Bridge Mode, it just simply doesn't communicate with anything. I have set the Linksys on PPPoE mode, with the details from my ISP, and followed the next two articles to get the SmartRG under Bridged Mode: - https://help.teksavvy.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003242983-SmartRG-505N-Setup - https://www.vmedia.ca/support/documents/smartrg505n_bridging.pdf Not sure if the issue is with the SmartRG not going into Bridged Mode, or with the Linksys not connecting with the ISP. I've tried to use MAC cloning on the Linksys with PPPoE, and that didn't work either. Thanks for your help. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 01:44 PM PDT Hey guys, I'm wondering if any of you have experience with the Netgear R8500 router? I bought an open box one from Mike's Computer Shop and it's given me nothing but problems. It worked for about an hour and then it went dead. It was in some type of bootloop cycle. This is unfortunately a known issue with this router. I got a really good deal on it and Mike's wouldn't exchange it for me so I decided to RMA it through Netgear. Unfortunately the new one they sent me did the exact same thing, so I tried to return it to Mike's. They refused to give me a refund saying that the serial numbers didn't match. So now I have RMA'ed it again with Netgear. This one seems to be working, but it's only been online for about an hour now. It would be reassuring if some of you guys have this router and have had it working over the long term. Netgear told me that the one they just sent me is from a new batch that should be unaffected by the bootloop issue, but I will believe that when I see it. Also what are your thoughts on the Netgear R8500 versus the Asus AC86U? I now own both unfortunately and I will need to sell one of them. The raw bandwidth and range of the R8500 appeals to me more than the CPU power of the Asus AC86U. [link] [comments] |

Can I use my modem/router as an access point without ethernet cable? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 01:20 PM PDT Hello. I have TP-Link W9970 Modem/Router. My main modem is Zyxel VMG3312-B10B. Wi-Fi range extender? (Or conventional router? 802.11ac) Posted: 30 Jul 2018 12:53 PM PDT I'm thinking about a Wi-Fi range extender - such as a Netgear EX7000 - since I want Wireless-AC, but I have FiOS and I don't want to deal with changing my modem/router combo that I currently have (802.11n Actiontec MI424WR Rev I). What's the best Wi-Fi range extender - or should I consider a traditional router and use it as a WAP? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:54 AM PDT I'm trying to configure my Orbi to be an AP for my Netgear C7100V. Documentation I found had me go into advanced setup and change from router to AP, but it creates a new network, I was hoping it would just extend the C7100V's network. Have I missed something? Router to handle 300/20 connection with QoS Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:44 AM PDT May need to edit for formatting, sorry in advance. Hey all - I am just looking for opinions. I know that QoS isn't needed on the download side of things when bandwidth is that high. But I am shooting for overkill here.
What I have
My problem I used to be on a 100/10 connection, but as time went on they offered a 300/20 tier, and there was a want to do some streaming and other upload intensive things so we upgraded.
What I want
My personal options These are just things I've come up with and would like opinions on, feel free to offer up other options and explain your reason for suggesting.
I don't really know of any cost-efficient consumer grade routers that will do what I want at that speed. I'm open to every and all suggestions, I just really enjoy what Ubiquiti does and know a bit about them.
Edit: adding a new section for my goal My Goal I live in a rural area, so honestly I am surprised I don't have to use a WISP, or some local "Fast internet in rural area" sign's internet, as such the infrastructure out my way is less than perfect, so I want to squeeze every bit of performance out of this that I can, as effectively as I can. My home is home to myself and my wife with occasional visitors. We both game a lot, she streams some, and in general probably would benefit much more from having a 20/100 connection realistically. I am in networking by profession and as such I have an affinity to make my home network as good to the end-user (us) as possible, this means that I of course trashed my old Walmart Linksys router and went for the Edgerouter X with a standalone UniFi AP AC Lite as our set up, as time went on I realized that the modem we were provided with was affected by the Puma6 plague, which prompted me to buy a Netgear CM600. Then I found the Bufferbloat test that DSLreports offers (I also understand the varying opinions on this test, but this is what I want to accomplish regardless), and while I get A ratings all around with smartqueue enabled on upload and not download, I am able to get A+ ratings all around if I enable smartqueue on both download and upload, it's just that the EdgerouterX can't handle 300 Mbps with smartqueue, so I get around 150 Mbps download. Help a noob! Need help in buying a new router for my home Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:43 AM PDT My old tenda router just stopped working. So would like to buy a new one. My speed is just above 200mbps. So I'll prefer a 300mbps router. Please suggest a good router with a large coverage. I've sorted out TP-Link WR-845N and WR-940N as final contenders. Also suggest routers from other manufacturers. Frontier/Arris NVG589 Manual Firmware Update? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:33 AM PDT Hello all, Recently I've had some issues with my Arris NVG589 on Frontier. I am paying for 18mbps download speeds. However, we recently started seeing our speeds drop to ~8mbps (via speedtest.net on multiple devices, varying distances to the router), so thought a firmware update might help me a little. A factory reset did not force a firmware update like many people said it should, and I'm positive I'm not on the latest version of firmware (9.1.0h13d5). The router settings allow me to do a manual update with a .bin file, however, I have not been able to find the downloads to the latest firmware updates from any sites, including: -Motorola -Arris -AT&T (used to be my provider until Frontier kind of took over) -Frontier This has gotten very frustrating and all I'm looking for is an updated version of the firmware. Thanks everyone. [link] [comments] |
