Posted: 04 Jul 2018 11:14 AM PDT I've seen a to. Of recommendations for the T4xx series and have ~$400USD to spend. I'd like to run a dedicated Linux distro (not 100% on which yet) as I continue learning web development. I've seen they can be upgraded easily. With my budget - should I purchase a higher CPU and upgrade to an SSD myself? How much RAM? Did you all purchase from Amazon or Newegg? Any resources/suggestions are appreciated. [link] [comments] |

Can't figure out why wi-fi suddenly drops. Posted: 04 Jul 2018 12:14 PM PDT I'm running a Debian 9 and for some reason, the wi-fi keeps dropping. I have to disconnect it and then connect it again so it works fine. Quite a nuisance. Connection works well via LAN cable with no sudden connection falls. The solutions I found doing Google searches don't really help. Any suggestions how I can fix it? I am beginning to think that this is a problem with my wi-fi card because it was an issue before when I used different distros which are all based on the Debian kernel. Thank you very much 😊 [link] [comments] |
Please explain backlight brightness numbers Posted: 04 Jul 2018 09:52 AM PDT In sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight there are files showing current and max backlight numbers. My current is 43 and max is 852. What are those numbers' units? They aren't cd/m2 or percentage. On one laptop when current is 0 there is still a dim but visible desktop...on another its black. Why does that happen? [link] [comments] |

Installing Ubuntu with Windows 10 Posted: 04 Jul 2018 07:35 AM PDT Hi, i have two drives, one 200GB SSD and second with my data 2GB HDD. There is a Windows 10 on SSD drive and i wish to install Ubuntu on HDD using 100GB of unalocated space, along with three NTFS partitions that have 1900GB of data. How to do that properly? Both drives uses GPT and UEFI, so i installed Ubuntu on pendrive by Rufus with GPT option. When i am using default option "along with Windows Boot Manager" it wants to install whole Ubuntu on SSD drive, so i tried another option. When i click custom installation then drives popups along with choosing location (drive) for Linux's bootloader. What should i do next? [link] [comments] |
How do i Check the authenticity of a SHA256SUM file using a GPG file on Windows 10? Is This Possible? (Two monitors on two different GPUs) Posted: 04 Jul 2018 01:03 PM PDT So I just found my old system and have it's integrated graphics and a GTX 660 and would love to have 2 or 3 monitors on my now Linux only system. So with the olde 660 there is 1 HDMI out, 1 VGA out and 1 DVI out but I can't figure out what kind of DVI it is, it looks strange. Could be "dual" going by the diagrams online. (Even on a description I found from NVIDIA it's just listed as "DVI") My old setup used to use a DVI-D to HDMI converter but my DVI-I to HDMI converter only worked with Windows. (Due to DVI-D being digital already apparently.) The integrated GPU has 1 HDMI and 1 VGA port. So I'm curious, what would be the best way to get 2 or 3 monitors running on this in Linux? I'd be happy with 2 and 3 would be a bonus. Right now in Windows I have an Oculus Rift which, by it's evil nature, takes one of your GPU outputs out of the game so I plugged my last monitor into the integrated GPU and it added it as a 4th monitor like normal and extended the desktop, as if I'd plugged it into my dedicated GPU. (NVIDIA drivers.) Only downside is that games won't run on that monitor without crashing of course. Is it possible to do the same with this Linux setup? Ideally I'd like to use 1 HDMI on the 660 and 1 HDMI on the Intel whatever so I can use my current spare monitor and a spare TV I have. (50 inch Kali Linux!) Any help or suggestions? Is it possible to do it the same way Windows does it? Just enable both GPU and have the computer span them so there's a desktop on each? If so how so? Thanks! If it's impossible just tell me, I can take it. [link] [comments] |
Microphone has pop noise in background on linux Posted: 04 Jul 2018 12:15 PM PDT Hi, I always loved Linux (used ubuntu as main OS for a year or so some years ago and elementaryOS on a secondary laptop for 2 years) and recently I'm trying to move as much as possible out of windows just because I have that kind of free time and I like to try new things, (also I already have done everything possible as a user on windows, so its kinda boring nothing new to try) so I decided to dual boot with a few different distros. So far I installed Manjaro & Linux Mint, but to be honest the desktop envorimment wasn't feeling right for me so now Im with deepin but I experience a problem in Mint and Deepin (didnt reach that point with Manjaro). I know that this is probably easy but im stuck and tbh probably missing something simple (most likely). I have a "pop" background noise(almost as a light rain sound) on the microphone when I record with OBS or talk on Discord for e.g. I have tried alsamixer acording with I read in multiple foruns and also tried with pulse audio echo-cancel module, but either there is no effect at all or its just fucks all my sound input and output. On windows I have to say that the microphone works no problem, as the usual background noise but not this pop light rain like sound. This kinda souns a bit like audio driver related but I have searched and in a way or another everything points to alsamixer and/or pulse audio module. Please help my noob soul, on this most likely stupid problem. If needed any info ask and I will provide if relevant for the resolution of this. [link] [comments] |
Can’t install or open a package Posted: 04 Jul 2018 12:12 PM PDT Hello, desktop user here running Debian 9.4. When trying to open a package I encounter a "Failed to execute child error shown hereany suggestions ? I'm sure it's simple but I don't know where to even start. Also when I try to extract any package to a folder, Linux complains of a "suitable archive manager" not being present as shown here. So how does one even install a working rar archived offline.... I do have Winrar for Linux in a flash drive if that helps. I did install Linux offline and when clicking the internet box I am shown this There is also this error screen at boot Any suggestions ? Question about CUPS server [More details inside] Posted: 04 Jul 2018 10:19 AM PDT Hi, I'm setting up CUPS for the first time and just had a few questions,
Perhaps one point to note is that the printer doesn't have any paper or ink yet. I am waiting for those to be delivered. Let me know your thoughts if you think it should work. Is there anyway I can test or verify the connection before the ink and paper arrive? [link] [comments] |
Desktop (using Ubuntu Gnome) cannot connect to internet again Posted: 04 Jul 2018 10:19 AM PDT Hi all, The last thing I remember running was Software Updater, then restarting the computer so the updates could go through. When I turned on my desktop, the wifi icon was missing from the top right, and I was no longer connected to the internet. I don't think I downloaded anything crazy. I'm still pretty new to Linux so I have no idea how to fix this. For details: Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 1500X Quad-Core Processor x 8 Graphics: GeForce GTX 1050 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 Base system: Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS 64-bit I've been using this to connect to the internet too, and it never presented an issue: https://imgur.com/a/cMUSLoa Any tips would be appreciated! My ubuntu linux stopped booting into desktop after Nvidia driver update. Need help starting it up. Posted: 03 Jul 2018 11:17 PM PDT I manually downloaded and installed the latest Nvidia drivers and after installation, tried to reboot. The screen is stuck at /dev/sda2: clean. After checking a few places, changed my grub config to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" Adding nomodeset boots the system just fine but without nvidia drivers functioning. Additional drivers shows proprietary drivers installed but GPU is not detected. Now after removing nomodeset, it has again stuck at black screen. If if switch to tty1 and back to tty7, I can see /dev/sda2: clean It is to be noted that system was functioning fine for past 3 months with the same setup but got black screened after sudden power loss. Reinstalled Ubuntu mate overnight and everything worked until I installed the latest cuda drivers again. [link] [comments] |

There's gotta be an easier way to access programs installed in /opt. (Linux Mint 18.3) Posted: 04 Jul 2018 07:53 AM PDT Disclaimer: I am not a power user, and only really have experience using the terminal for PPA installations. Using OfflineBay as an example: Right now, my procedure for running the program requires navigating to /opt/OfflineBay, opening the directory as root in order to gain the necessary permissions, and then running the executable. This feels so crude. There must be an easier way to access the program, either by creating a shortcut for it in the menu (preferred) or by using the terminal, but I have no idea how to go about doing it. Any advice? Is there a way to setup dual boot windows 10 from this point ? or the only way is to reinstall ubuntu manually and choose the alongside option ? backround : never used linux, but as a future cs student want to test the waters with a ubuntu laptop. though my uni will mostly consist of C#, so i also need windows 10 [link] [comments] |
Data loss with luks lvm partitions Posted: 04 Jul 2018 07:36 AM PDT Hi ! I have made a mistake with my luks lvm device. Yesterday I wanted to extend my vg-home logical volume with a second disk, so I did vgextend /dev/sdb1 vg (vg is the name of my volume group) but when I did df -h, the size of my vg-home volume was still the same. So I played around with several solutions, I have remove the disk from the group, unplug the disk ans plug it again but I had the unknown device problem (unknow device in my vg group). So I did vgreduce --removemissing, hoping it will work, but it removed the entire vg-home volume ! So I decided to boot on live USB stick to see if i can restore it, or if i can backup my data with testdisk/photorec, tried some things again and now... even my vg-root volume disappear ! lvs, vgs, pvs, lvdisplay, vgdisplay and pvdisplay doesn't find anything, no physical volume found. I just see my vg-home and vg-root volume in photorec when I select device /dev/mapper/vg and fdisk -l show the device /dev/mapper/vg with partition /dev/mapper/vg-root and /dev/mapper/vg-home. I would like to know if I have other solutions than tried to restore volumes with metadata ( https://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Cluster_Logical_Volume_Manager/mdatarecover.html ) ? Help with alternative to fstab Posted: 04 Jul 2018 03:26 AM PDT Hi. I have modified my fstab to automatically mount my external drives. The issue is, occasionally a drive will be removed or decides to not be present. This means not fails. Is there a way to automatically mount drives in the same place everytime but if they're not present to continue the boot process? I'm using Ubuntu server 18.04. Thanks for any and all help.
