Would gaming in FHD on a QHD screen have an impact / be possible ?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 10:05 AM PDT

I'm thinking of buying the aero 14 of gigabyte, the problem being a QHD screen coupled with a 1050 doesn't really sounds good to me, hence my question.

Would playing on the QHD screen at a FHD resolution be possible? If yes would it have an impact?

Thanks for your help I'm not an expert or even remotely experienced in these matters.

Thoughts on ASUS Flip UX461UN 14 inch ultrabook?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 10:22 AM PDT

Specs seems superb and its light weight and a 2 in 1. Pricing is also pretty good as well. Will be using it for coding and photoshop. Anyone bought this laptop or have first hand experience with it?

Matebook x Pro vs Surface Book 2

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 01:16 PM PDT

I am starting post-secondary education this September and will extremely likely need a laptop right away for my computer science courses. I probably won't be doing any graphic intensive stuff so a discrete gpu isn't really necessary.

The configurations I can afford are

    ◾Matebook x pro (intel i7)

Cad $1574.10 (student discount on the Microsoft store)

    ◾Surface book 2 (13.5)

    Cad $1699. 00

Intel i5, 8 Gb ram and 128 gb SSD

On paper, the matebook seems like the obvious choice but I have heard that it has heating issues and I am not sure if Huawei is a reliable brand. As for the surface book, I really like the design and the fact that I can convert it into a tablet but that's about it.

2 Used Lenovo ideapad u530 touch for $250 vs new ASUS Vivobook F510UA for $509

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 10:26 AM PDT

So my brother has the Lenovo (and it's been sitting in a box for months, and I dug it out to see what it's all about) and he wants money for it if I'm going to use it.

Now I've been planning on getting an ASUS Vivobook F510UA from Amazon (for $509.99) sometime in the next month or two.

So for the specs, which is a better deal? The Lenovo is cheaper, but it's a worse laptop specs wise

    Any advice?

My budget is about $1500, but I wouldn't be opposed to waiting some time and spending more if it gave a significant performance boost.

edit: should also mention, not a fan of this design. I'd like something not so insane. but it's also not that important to me to prevent me from buying a good laptop.

Brand new MSI WS63 8SJ-018 BSOD: Video scheduler internal error.

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 12:30 PM PDT

So I just got this laptop a week ago and fresh installed windows. Its a great machine and I really don't want to send it back apart from the fact I get this BSOD at seemingly random times once or twice a day. I have tried uninstalling drivers for the video card and reinstalling, and updating windows everything is up to date. The GPU is a quadro P2000. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Should I do a fresh install on a new Asus transformer book?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 10:41 AM PDT

Just about to get a new Asus transformer book T101ha and am wondering if I should do a reinstall of windows 10 just to get bloatware off and whatnot, or is it more trouble than it's worth? Is the T101ha pretty clean from the factory?

Also wondering if it's advised to not do windows updates to keep the system as fast as possible? Or would you not recommend that?

Want to replace my Surface Pro 4 with something that allows for gaming and more battery life (Matebook X Pro, XPS 15 9570?)

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 09:47 AM PDT

I bought a Surface Pro 4 i5 for university (computer science) almost three years ago as my only machine, as somebody who's often on the go. The pen functionality served me well but I'm now close to finishing my studies and I find myself using the pen very little now.

My main qualms with the Surface now:

    • The 12 inch screen is pretty cramped for software development on the go
    • The battery life: it was tolerable to start with (6-7 hours max), but I'm getting under 5 hours pretty consistently now
    • Lack of gaming capability: I recently started gaming with a 1080p monitor and games like Fortnite, Overwatch run at 25FPS @ 640x360 resolution, pretty painful

I'm looking for a new laptop now that addresses the above issues.

    My priorities, in order:

    • Good software development/productivity machine with 7+ hours of battery life (handle having an IDE, multiple tabs, compilers running)

    • Having some gaming capability (e.g. Be able to run Fortnite, Overwatch, maybe even something like Battlefield V on non-potato quality settings at 1080p)

    • Good build quality - I'm always on the go and can't have something that might start to fail on me

    • Portability: I'm guessing my limit here is around 4lb give or take, seeing as I'm pretty portable and like to travel as light as possible

So far, the only two laptops that have stood out to me are the Huwaei Matebook X Pro, which tackles almost all concerns at a very affordable price ($1500 CAD). My only question is the reliability of the warranty/laptop itself, seeing as it just got launched.

The Dell XPS 5790 i7 FHD is the other laptop - it has a more powerful GPU, but also $500 more expensive. I'm debating whether or not it makes more sense saving the extra $500 and putting it towards a gaming PC build instead.

I considered the MSI GS65 but battery life reports mention it getting under 4-5 hours, which is an issue.

I'm sure there are other options I haven't considered. Any advice would be much appreciated as to what I should do here.

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 06:06 PM PDT

I just bought the laptop from Best Buy and need some help setting it up since I've never had a windows product before.

First- how do I make sure I have all the newest drivers updated

Second- my WiFi from dragon center says it's ~23 MBs but when I test it on google I get 188. Is there anyway to improve the WiFi ?

Lastly- what other recommendations do you have to make the laptop perform and run smoothly ?

Dell Inspiron 7577 vs HP Omen? Which should i choose?

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 08:41 PM PDT

I'm leaving for Barbados in a few weeks and I'm stuck in deciding what laptop I should get for video editing on the go.

Should I get a used Dell Inspiron 7577 for $800 or just fork out the extra $400 for the HP Omen that has identical specs except it has a i7 8750h CPU.

I mostly edit 1080p footage other than when I use my mavic pro that shoots in 4k but I also want something that will still be able to handle the workload when I upgrade my gear and an shooting in 4k completely.

    Dell Inspiron 7577 Specs: i7 7700hq 16gb Ram Nvidia GTX 1060 6gb 15.6 4K LED Display Cost $800 used.

    Or

    HP Omen Specs: i7 8750h 16gb Ram Nvidia GTX 1060 6gb 15.6 FHD Display Cost $1200 new.

Do you think think giving up the 4k screen for the i7 8750h would be worth it? 🤔

I'm all ears as I'm not super tech savvy and if you have any experience with either laptops let me know how you feel about them. I hear the i7 8750h runs pretty hot.

What vendors offer the best warranties?

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 01:37 AM PDT

I'm in the usa btw, specifically wa state. I had a bad experience with my last laptop warranty and would like some advice on getting a good warranty or insurance.

I know that Costco offers a free 2 year warranty with the option for buying an additional 3 year. 5 years for $100 seems like a steal, so is it too good to be true?

Best buy has geek squad but it's half the price of the laptop for a 3 year warranty. I don't think that's much of a deal.

So do any of you had good or bad experiences with certain vendors extended warranty offers? Or have any of you have ideas to get get good coverage without selling the farm?

    Thanks!

Hp pavilion x360 screen flickering problems

    Posted: 04 Jul 2018 05:23 AM PDT

I just received this laptop in the mail and less than an hour after using it I experienced awful screen flickering whenever I move the laptop. I've been using it a couple hours now and often when I move around in my seat with it on my lap the screen flickers off. Its dark but I can still see the image that was on the screen if i look closely in the right angles so i know the screen didn't disconnect completely. Adjusting the screen to open or close it more is when it flickers the most. I am stuck most of the time slowly flipping it back and forth till it finally displays again. It occurs when the charger is in or out and in tablet mode also. If I slightly bump into it, adjust my sitting position or even hit the backspace key too hard the screen flickers off and I'm stuck adjusting the screen back and forth until the display comes back; this can take an annoying amount of time.
What are my options? can it be fixed? should I return it for a new one, or should I get a different brand and type of 2 in 1 convertible laptop?
So far i love this laptop except for this fatal flaw.

Need help choosing between Dell XPS 13 9570 vs Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 6th Gen

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 10:44 PM PDT

I am currently stuck between these 2 laptops. The configuration of the XPS 13 I wanted comes with the i5, 16 GB RAM, and 256 GB SSD. The configuration of the X1 Carbon comes with the same specs except it has the i7. The price difference between these two configs is ~$70. Is the X1 Carbon worth the extra $70? Are there any issues regarding build quality, quality control, etc that I should be aware of for both of these models? I would appreciate as much feedback as possible.

XPS 9570: Looking for Thunderbolt Dock for Two 4k Displays, Power, and USB Ports

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 10:17 PM PDT

I just ordered the XPS 9570 (i7, FHD, 97WHr battery) which I will be using for software development. I would like to get a thunderbolt dock to allow me to connect to two 4K monitors, power to fully charge my laptop, and multiple USB ports for the USB peripherals on my desk (mechanical keyboard, speakers, mouse, the receiver for my corsair headphones).

The advertised choice is the TB 16 but I wonder if there are any better alternatives out there. The TB 16 has one HDMI and Displayport each which works for my displays (though I would love a dock with two Displayports)

And if TB 16 was to be suggested, should I opt for the 240w adapter or would the 180 suffice?

    College Laptop Recommendation

    Posted: 03 Jul 2018 03:25 PM PDT

Looking for laptops for college to use for school and gaming. Not a super intensive gamer (not really playing triple A titles) more online multiplayer games such as League of Legends and Fortnite. Really looking for a laptop with a sleek design that doesn't scream "I'm a gamer!" like most traditional gaming laptops seem to do. Most likely planning on coding while gaming casually on the side with it. I was initially looking at the Razer Blade Stealth as I loved the design of it, but for the price point it doesn't seem like the specs are worth it. Right now I'm currently looking at the ASUS Vivobook Pro as my number one option (this model right here https://www.amazon.com/N580VD-DB74T-VivoBook-Touchscreen-GeForce-keyboard/dp/B0747S3V8D/). My only concern with it as of now would be if the 1050 graphics card would be good to last for the next four years or if it would become quickly outdated, but other than that I like the design and portability of it. I would say those would be my wants in a laptop as of right now. A casual gaming laptop with a sleek, lowkey, and subtle design that is portable and under $1200. If you have any advice or suggestions please let me know, thanks!
