    Running Overwatch on Dell G5

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 08:43 AM PDT

So I got a Dell G5 laptop recently and I was hoping it could run Overwatch at around 60 fps, but the highest it goes currently is 30 fps. Is there anything I can do to increase the framerate? Is it supposed to be running this slowly? All of my in-game settings are set to low or off. If anyone could help thatd be awesome. Thanks!

Good laptop for engineering around $1000

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 01:12 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $1300, USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specs are my main priority but decent battery life is important
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't need the thinnest lightest laptop but I don't want a big bulky laptop either.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD and light to medium gaming (gaming is not a priority but I would like to be able to play light games)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am an electrical engineering student. The requirements provided by my school as well as personal requirements are:

8 or 16 GB of RAM (I want to be able to expand to 16 if it's 8 GB), discrete graphics, 256 GB+ SSD, Intel i7 8th gen

Hello! A bit egg headed and need some help figuring out which model HP Omen I have, more details inside

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 05:48 AM PDT

    Hi!

I want to start off by saying thank you in advance for any help, I'm not the brightest.

Last year I bought an HP Omen 15 from Best Buy, and now looking back (without the box/receipt, of fucking course), I can't seem to find this particular model anywhere. I want to find a cheap storage drive, as this only came with 100gb, but all the models I find online don't even come with that amount of storage.

    This is my system info

    This is the device spec

Using this information on HP's website, I can't seem to find my laptop in their help guides. I'd like to take a few covers and panels off, clean it a bit, and install more storage but I want to make absolutely sure I find the right information online.

I'm sure I'm just being silly as fuck, and this information is right in front of me.

Thank you, let me know what else I can do to help.

    Hello, I need help picking.

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 01:44 PM PDT

I need a pc for school with this specs: Windows 10, 64 bits. Intel core i7 3 Ghz or superior. 16 GB ram or more. 4 gb of graphics card or more. 1 tb hard drive. Led/lcd screen 15" widescreen min resolution 1366x768.

And I was considering getting the blade pro as my daily driver but I've seen some pretty fucked up stuff happening with the blade pro, so I was wondering if you guys could help me figure out if razer is a good option and if so which could be the best model. Thanks.

    XPS 9560 vs XPS 9370

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 01:21 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy a laptop for college. I'm majoring in CS. After considering a bunch of laptops, I was drawn to the XPS line. The refurbished models on the Dell outlet are priced really well. However, I don't know if I should get the 15 9560 or the 13 9370.

The former has a GPU, which is nice to have, but I don't play games, so its not a necessity by any means. The screen is also larger, which is good for coding. However, the device is a year old already, and is far heavier than the 13 inch. I worry that it will be too heavy if I have to constantly lug it around campus.

The XPS 13 is newer and a current model with a faster CPU, and it has an IR camera, which is nice. Its also ligher, which is a big benefit. However, its screen is smaller, and it is slightly more expensive.

I don't know which one to pick. I would prefer to have a more recent laptop with the newest tech, but I don't know if 13 inches is too small for programming. However, I don't want to carry a 4.6 lb computer around, even if it has a bigger screen. Either way, I would get an FHD model with 512 GB of storage and 16 GB of RAM. What are your thoughts, especially those who have done programming? Is the 13 fast enough and large enough for coding, or do I need a bigger screen and a GPU? Is it manageable to carry around a 15 inch around campus? Thanks.

Deciding what to buy for college

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 01:16 PM PDT

My mom told me I can use my college fund to buy whatever laptop I wanted for college. And naturally I want an apple laptop as I already have a windows custom built PC and hate most of their laptops. I'm just having trouble deciding what would be best, an iPad Pro with the pencil and keyboard, a MacBook Pro with an i7 or an i5(if I get i5 I'll get the Touch Bar), and I'm also open to getting a surface pro but I'm just not sure it's worth it. I'm also not sure what would be best for a college student. I'll be a business major so I feel like the iPad Pro would be good for doing math problems, taking notes, etc. and I can access all my notes on my phone and my computer still because I can upload it to the cloud and still google drive. Any opinions are appreciated :)

EDIT: If it isn't clear, whatever device I get will be the newest version.

    Macbook pro 13 vs..?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:33 PM PDT

How much more expensive is a 13 inch 2018 MacBook pro (16 gb ram 512 gb ssd) compared to a similarly performance, similar build quality windows machine?

I can't really seem really find a good alternative. XPS 13 has a weaker graphics performance when modelling iirc. Spectre doesnt seem to keep up either. What surface book 2 with an 8th gen gpu is equally expensive. What else is there (eu) for me?

Is it really only the likes of a XPS 9570?

    ASUS Zenbook 3 Deluxe

Been looking for two months now...

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 09:44 AM PDT

Hey, I have been looking for a laptop for around two months now since my inspiron 5558 is beginning to die. These are the things that I am looking for in my new laptop. Does not necessarily need to be a gaming laptop. But at my price point and performance requirement they probably would be.

price under $800 in Malaysia so about 3200RM.

quad core preferably 8th gen. Can be U since 8th gen U cpus are pretty good.

Gpu atleast a mx150 but I would very much like a gtx 1050.

Size should be 13" to 15" with 14" preferred. But not that big of a problem. Weight however should be less than 5 pounds or 2.2 kgs.

I would like the battery to last atleast 4:30 hours on low energy mode.

The most important thing for me is the build quality. I want the laptop to feel premium. My inspiron 5558 has a very good and sturdy feel, so something like that. Something that doesn't overheat and has quiet fans on idle. Oh and they should also be upgradeable.

I have narrowed down to hp pavilion gaming and power.

I would like to know the build quality and thermals of these laptops if any of you have them. Whether they flex or if you have had any issues with them.

    Thanks

Having issues with my HP Spectre x360, should I bother keeping it?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 05:30 PM PDT

I've had it ~3 months now (but only used it for the first month while I was in uni), really wish I'd sent it back as I wasn't happy with the heat it was producing in the first place. Even for a modern laptop it's obscene and the fan runs almost constantly, making it impractical for lectures. It also has some kind of high pitched whine whenever the keyboard backlight is on, which HP don't seem to care about.

Now the touchpad is broke. It works when I turn it in but within ~10 mins of use the clicks stop registering, then the touch. I have HP's care pack so I'm hopefully going to send it off for repair asap.

But even if/when fixed, I'm just sick of it. It cost me £1k and it seems to be poorly made and I don't think it will last me the 3 years I need it to. I don't know how much I could expect to get selling it (700? - RRP is £1250 I think but I got a student deal) ... It's really barely been touched at all BUT I'm worried sending it off to HP will mean it returns with scratches etc? And because I won't get the cost of it back from selling it, I don't think I'll be able to get one of the other laptops I wanted (XPS 13), will probably have to settle for something much lower end because it has to be lightweight. So, I don't really want to sell it, but I'm really concerned it just won't last.

Does anyone have any advice? I realise there's not a lot to say, I'm just looking for opinions, especially if anyone has any experience with the spectre range.

    FPS Difference

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 04:41 AM PDT

Alright, so I wasn't sure who to ask this question towards, but I figured it would be the best to ask here.

So basically I have the 4k version of the dell i7577 with 60 Hertz.

Playing with 60 Hertz, is there a difference between 80-90 fps and 150-160 fps due to the 60hertz?

MX150 max-Q, has anyone found it useful in their case?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 05:11 PM PDT

I'm considering a T480s, and I'm on the fence on whether I should the (gimped) MX150 dGPU. It seems to be marginally better than iGPU, and I'm coming from a desktop with an R9 380 so it looks even more pitiful to me. The only reason I might be considering it is so I can play light games like Rimworld better on the go (and the feeling of a maxed-out laptop is also nice).

I don't plan on running Linux on it, but if I did, would it be reasonable to expect better support for Nvidia GPUs (i.e. Optimus)?

Upgrading from a SATA3 SSD to an NVME SSD (both m.2)?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 07:54 PM PDT

I'm coming from a desktop so I usually just insert the lego connectors into the appropriate lego pins.. I'm clueless when it comes to upgrading laptops.

I'm configuring a T480s with the base 128GB SSD (SATA3), but I plan to upgrade eventually along with the RAM when prices become more reasonable (especially on that RAM).

Do both just plug in the same way? I think I'm just getting confused by how the standard T480 needs a special insert for an M.2 drive to fit in the 2.5" bay, in addition to the appropriate drive cable.

Will I need some sort of adapter or cable to connect an NVME SSD

128 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD vs. 256 GB SSD?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 05:11 PM PDT

I'm looking at a few laptops to replace my 3 year old Dell Inspiron 15 7000. The Acer Swift 3 (link), the Lenovo Ideapad 720s (link), and the ASUS Zenbook UX410 (link). The first two have a 256 GB SSD, whereas the Zenbook has 128 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD. I am wondering which setup is better, and which one would be a faster performer. If i put the OS on the SSD and all my other stuff on the HDD on the ASUS, will it still be as fast as the other two?

Also, I still haven't made a decision as to which one to buy from these 3, so if you have any recommendations I'd definitely appreciate it!
