Ubuntu can access the Windows partitions but not those meant for it! Posted: 28 Jul 2018 08:37 AM PDT This is the first time I am using Ubuntu l. I installed Win10 first. Halved the HDD and created a 100GB partition for windows and a 400Gb partition for games. The rest of the 500FB is unallocated. When running the Ubuntu installer, I clicked, "Install alongside Windows". The partition encryption option was greyed out and there was no way to resize and create the Ubuntu partition even though this was shown in Lifewire's tutorials. On startup, the Windows option is written under /devsomething. Now on Ubuntu, I can write to the two partitions of Windows but not in the 500GB unallocated space that was meant for Ubuntu! I wanted the Windows and Ubuntu parttions separate for security and that Ubuntu side should have 1, 50GB system partition and 2, 225GB partition for documents and media respectively. And that the Windows side should not be able to access the Ubuntu side. Win is only used for gaming and Ubuntu for rest. 1) Can someone tell me what I can do now and achieve the goal? 2) Also, what really happened? Where is Ubuntu located now? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Jul 2018 11:15 AM PDT Using arch/antergos with KDE. Wifi adapter is the Realtek RTL8192SU, or belkin n300 wireless usb. Using Network Manager. I thought the issue might be with network manager changing the mac address as a security feature (known to cause issues with usb wifi adapters) but it seems thats not the case. I can fix it by replugging in the usb but its a pain. Any help? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Which RAM monitor should I believe? And why? Posted: 27 Jul 2018 11:39 PM PDT I am using Manjaro in its latest version and if I run "free" in the terminal the output is 514mb. If I use the GNOME system monitor (I am using XFCE), it shows me 814mb. And finally, if I run "htop" the output is 648mb. Which one can I trust? [link] [comments] |
Dolphin in Mate Desktop Environment Posted: 28 Jul 2018 05:11 AM PDT Hi everybody, I have installed Dolphin File Manager in Mate DE which is a native application KDE desktop environment. Now when I change the theme in Mate DE, the theme of dolphin manger does not change. Do I need to install some more libraries from KDE ? [link] [comments] |
Lightweight distro recommendation Posted: 28 Jul 2018 03:34 AM PDT I've recently made the switch to linux (~6months ago). I still don't know what the best distros are so could you guys recommend me a nice lightweight one? I started with Ubuntu but shortly afterwards I made the switch to Lubuntu and I'm pretty happy with how fast it is. I don't care much about looks, I just want my OS to be as responsive as possible while still using a GUI for most tasks. I use it for both gaming and working. [link] [comments] |
Trouble adding repos in openSUSE Leap Posted: 28 Jul 2018 08:23 AM PDT Hi! I've been running into trouble this morning adding repos to my system using terminal, but I keep getting "too many arguments" errors. The first one was for Powershell. I was following the instructions at the link below: I reached the second step, and input the command: "zypper ar https://packages.microsoft.com/rhel/7/prod/" Which produced this error: "Too many arguments." I eventually installed via snap, so I'm not worried about it anymore, but once I installed that, I wanted to learn how to actually use powershell, so I went to the training site and I couldn't watch the video without Flash Player, so I found an adobe repository at the following link: https://en.opensuse.org/Adobe_Flash_Player I tried adding to repo with the command provided on the site: "sudo zypper ar --check --refresh http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/linux/x86_64/ adobe" This resulted in the same error: "Too many arguments." I've checked and double-checked the syntax and everything looks like it should as displayed on the sites, so I'm wondering if there's something wrong with my OS installation or just what it is I'm missing. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. [link] [comments] |
Mount a Windows share in Ubuntu 18 permanently and on startup? Posted: 28 Jul 2018 09:28 AM PDT Hello I want to mount a Windows share in Ubuntu 18 permanently and on startup Security is not that important so plaintext users/pass are OK. What is the fastest way to do this? [link] [comments] |
How to use a color changing mouse? Posted: 28 Jul 2018 02:22 PM PDT I was thinking of buying a new mouse that can change colors, but the software seems to only work in windows. Is there a way to make it work in Linux? Maybe with some xset commands? This is the mouse I was looking at in specific. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 28 Jul 2018 02:13 PM PDT Hello! I need a distro with the latest KDE and something which has a great software repository, so that I never has to use the terminal ever. Discovery on KDE neon and Kubuntu is not good enough (doesn't have apps like spotify, etc and just isnt well made). I never want to use the terminal, because I want to see if linux can be used by non-techie people who dont want to mess with codes. And yes, KDE 5.12 or 5.13 because it offers the best non integral display scaling which is very important for someone running a 1080p laptop (no other DE supported it out of the box). question about installing npm on Ubuntu-based OS Posted: 28 Jul 2018 07:28 AM PDT so I just switched to an Ubuntu 18.04-based distro (Pop!_OS) and want to play around with hyper terminal, the plug-ins require npm so I installed it via synaptic which I think means it's installed as root? but now I've come across an article that says it's not recommended to install npm as root because it can mess up the system or something? I really only need it for the hyper plug-ins but haven't installed any yet, how should I best proceed? [link] [comments] |
Help with mount point name changing on reboot Posted: 28 Jul 2018 01:05 PM PDT I started out thinking this was an issue with running Plex in a Docker container. However, I think the root of my issue is the fact that mount point name changes every reboot, which I'm pretty sure is a something to do with Linux... I'm running the official Plex docker image on a NUC. The NUC uses a regular SDD for Linux Minut and has a m2 SSD dedicated to media. My issue is that every time the NUC is rebooted, the mount point of the m2 SSD device changes (e.g. /media/plex becomes /media/plex1). Appreciate any insights this has been driving me mad but I refuse to give up. [link] [comments] |
Trouble installing Skyrim on Ubuntu 18.04.1 Posted: 28 Jul 2018 01:03 PM PDT Hey guys, first reddit post, been a long time lurker who recently built my first computer! I chose this build someone put on pc part picker. https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/qWLrxr/excellent-amd-gaming-build I got Ubuntu on it working fine, I have however been struggling for the last 3 days on figuring out how to get Skyrim (UE) onto my PC. At this point I feel like I have tried so many methods and fixes that I do not know where to go from here. I have been to a ridiculous amount of post trying to learn. I have tried using PlayonLinux, Lutris, and watched multiple videos. I finally managed to get it installed on a virtual desktop (windows 7), but when I tried to run the game my screen went black and I had to log out to be able to gain functionality back. At this point I am scared that I have installed too much junk on my SSD and I should just wipe it and install windows. At least on my laptop (windows) I was able to get skyrim going in like 10 minutes. Advice? Is it normally this horrible starting out with linux? [link] [comments] |
XINPUT no option to change touchpad resolution / sensitivity / turn off acceleration Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:57 PM PDT I have Fedora 28 with xfce and libinput touchpad driver. When typing in: $ xinput list-props 'SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad' I get as an output lots of settings, but none of which are about touchpad sensitivity or touchpad resolution or turn off acceleration ( there is Accel Speed, but even setting it to zero or negative values doesn't disabled it completely acceleration is still present when sliding the finger on touchpad with high speed). Is there anyway I could change the aformentioned settings with libinput driver, or do I must change the driver to synaptics to manage it? [link] [comments] |
Are the more recent distributions more resource intensive? Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:49 PM PDT I have an old laptop that I'm going to be putting Xubuntu or Lubuntu on, and I'm just curious if it'd run better if I installed 12.04 LTS vs. 18.04 LTS. Thoughts? Edit: Specs are a Core 2 Duo, 4GiB Ram, 500GiB HDD@5400rpm [link] [comments] |
How do I chroot into my main partition from a liveCD? Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:46 PM PDT I have a 64bit manjaro 17.2 and when I tried booting today it gave me
I am on a 32bit Ubuntu 16.04 liveCD. Can I chroot into my main system and download libjson-c.so.3 on the current system or does it need to be the same architecture? Also, how would I be able to do that? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Jul 2018 11:56 PM PDT Tried to be concise in the title. Windows 10 will crash without fail when running aoe3, hearthstone, Wow, etc. It runs fine at first, then crashes after about 10 to 20 minutes. If I'm lucky, after 40. But the crashing is always inevitable, and before a friend introduced me to linux, I had just figured my laptop hardware was giving the ghost. I've tried updating all of my drivers, disabling telemetry garbage processes in the background, and other things but to no avail. All of these games WILL, however, run perfectly fine in Wine on Xubuntu. I don't understand, they use the same hardware, so it must be windows 10 right? [link] [comments] |
Issue with the Powerline Plugin. Posted: 28 Jul 2018 04:00 AM PDT So I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. I tried my best to install the Powerline plugin. I got it work somehow but am not able to see the awesome glyphs that make it so beautiful. Can someone help me figure this out? [link] [comments] |
Utility to monitory application level network traffic ? Posted: 28 Jul 2018 03:52 AM PDT I need a tool which can display what all applications are sending/receiving network packets, and which host/IP are they communicating with and the corresponding port number. There are hacks to achieve it using 'netstat' and even wireshark, but it over complicates the solution. I know of "TCPEye" - a Windows based utility which is precisely what I want in Linux, but couldn't find one. [link] [comments] |
What are the needed partitions for dual booting 2 Arch installs? Posted: 27 Jul 2018 09:24 PM PDT TL;DR ate the end Okay, so a little bit of context here (YOU CAN SKIP TO THE IMPORTANT PART IF YOU WANT): I have been a long time Arch user, and it have been using it for everything. I tried all the DEs, and settled with GNOME, which best suited my productive needs. But then I discovered and tried some premade "rice" with i3, and I just completely fell in love with it. It felt much more fluent and faster. That "rice", as it was a premade, came with all the configurations from the user who configured it. So I went on a journey trying to configure every single bit by myself to suit my needs, and more often than not, I end up fucking up and start all over again, by taking notes about what I did right and reinstall arch. The problem is, sometimes I need a stable system to do some work on it, for example write a document, and I just have one all messed up with the whole testing I've been doing. I've tried creating multiple users for different functions, but still sometimes programs and services end up conflicting and problems arrise. --------------IMPORTANT PART STARTS HERE--------------- So, the next solution I had in mind was doing a dual boot of two arch systems, one for my testing, and the other, a stable one. My current partition table looks likes this:
How would it look like if I wanted to dual boot? Like this?
And then create a boot entry at sda1 for the second system with "options root=/dev/sda5 rw"? And then just use the same swap partition for two? TL;DR: Want to dual boot two Arch installs. How would my partition table look like? Should I Just create another boot entry? Do I use the same swap partition for both systems? Thanks in advance. Have a nice weekend. Edit: Note ->I use UEFI boot [link] [comments] |
My external hard drive was pulled out while playing a video....... Posted: 27 Jul 2018 03:58 PM PDT Hey friends, sorry to bother you but I have a bit of an issue. Today I was watching a film and a friend accidentally unplugged my external hard drive. The film continued to play for a bit before stopping with some error messages. When I plug the hard drive back in it doesn't show up in the file system. Also running the command >ls /dev/ | grep sd< produces the same output regardless of whether or not it is plugged in. I also just noticed that when plugged in the external hard drive makes a beeping sound which I didn't know it was capable of. The hard drive is a seagate SRD0NF1 My laptop is running elementary os Loki Any help would be much appreciated, Id rather not loose all my date. :) [link] [comments] |
Need some help - dnscrypt-proxy w/ Unbound (Private Recursive DNS Resolver) Set Up Trouble - Input Posted: 27 Jul 2018 10:55 PM PDT So, basically I downloaded Dnscrypt-proxy on MINT. I'm using a dynamic network config, so via DHCP wrote in /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf: I then chose my DNSCrypt resolver w/ DNSSEC support in /etc/default/dnscrypt-proxy: So, in order to enable DNSSEC I tried to setup a local unbound DNSSEC resolver on my machine and pointed /etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf to my unbound installation at 127.0.0.1, hence a private recursive. I put in a few optional settings in /etc/unbound/unbound.conf.d/"yourname".conf Such as harden below nxdomain, hide version, hide idedntity, and turned on prefetching to keep regular sites in cache. I then enabled the control interface as well in /etc/unbound/unbound.conf.d/"yourname".conf control-enable: yes control-interface: 127.0.0.1 I also increased the amount of debugging info. I then typed in terminal to generate keys. I then restarted the unbound service via terminal and to make sure the DNS resolver was working typed in terminal: However I get an error that says it can not connect to 127.0.0.1. I also overided DHCP settings adding the line into dhclient.conf: and then restarted dhclient and network-manager. I get internet but unbound does not seem to be conencting to 127.0.0.1. After this I put the following in the same folder above /etc/unbound/unbound.conf.d/"yourname".conf: This is to STOP unbound from resolving DNS directy and to instead go through the encrypted DNSCRYPT-proxy. I do not knnow what is wrong, do I have to add something to the forward-zone? It seems to be some sort of config error but what? Basically, I tried to setup a local unbound DNSSEC resolver on my machine and pointed (/etc/dhcp/dhclient.conf) to my unbound installation at 127.0.0.1. Then I did the following at the end to make unbound resolve trhough dnscrypt-proxy. Maybe I'm using a used port number, I don't know. My firewall is reporting that my dnscrypt isn't even using port 53 but an unused port in the 30,000's. [link] [comments] |
