Laptop for an student starting to learn programming in Computational Chemistry and gaming Posted: 02 Jul 2018 04:08 AM PDT Hi everyone! As I stated in the title, I'm going to start my masters on Computational and Theoretical Chemistry next year. This last semester at my University I've learnt programming on Fortran, Bash scripting and some other utilities related to this field such as Molecular Dynamics packages like Gromacs. I'm planning on pursue a career on this field and I will try to learn other programming languages like Python, Java or C++. At the same time, I would love to play some games on my new laptop. The next four years I'll be travelling around and I don't think it's the right moment to buy a proper PC. Because of that, I think the best option is to get something in between both worlds: a laptop good enough to do programming at the levels that my studies require (not that complicated though) and be able to play newer games, not necessarily at maximum graphic quality. Total budget and country of purchase: Spain. 1000-1300 euros. (it can be a bit more if necessary) Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money and, if possible, good battery life. But most of the time the laptop would work as a normal PC. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows for gaming and Linux for programming (maybe Linux as a virtual machine or dual booting with a disk partition) Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Maybe 15'' or above (17'') Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly Gaming. I'll use some graphic programs such as VMD (visual molecular dynamics), maybe Gimp or Photoshop, but nothing too demanding I think. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would like to play the newer games that come out, but no necessarily at maximum graphic quality for all of them (high and some options in ultra would work for me). As a reference, if games like The Witcher 3, Assasins Creed Origins, or newer ones like Battlefield V and FFXV run smoothly, I would be totally satisfied. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would say the best of each category, but not really picky. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm open to any suggestions. I've just started to look into buying a laptop and I'm not really experienced on the topic. Furthermore, I've never had to think about programming and performance, so I'm a bit lost. Thank you for reading my post and spend some time helping me! submitted by /u/ReptilianSupremacist [link] [comments] |

[~$800][US] Anyone have recommendations for a solid college laptop that I can also game on in the event I have free time? Posted: 02 Jul 2018 01:05 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: I'm in the US with a budget of ~$800 (preferably less) Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money, then battery life are preferred, in that order! How important is weight and thinness to you? I used to rock a 17" Macbook Pro, so anything less than 20 kgs is a plus for me. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Would prefer Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'd like to use the machine for typical college things (surfing the internet, taking notes, writing papers, watching videos, etc.), as well as gaming. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I don't need to play super intensive at 120 fps on Ultra settings, but I'd like to be able to run the mid-level games I do play (WoW, Rocket League, Counter Strike, Overwatch, PUBG, etc.) at 60 fps on higher settings, as well as be able to run some newer games over the next year or two if I'm going to be investing in it. But I understand how much of a reach future-proofing can be. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A nice keyboard/input input devices would be really nice, as I do a lot of typing/school work as it is. Good build quality is far secondary, but still a concern. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I know it takes next to nothing to perform the everyday tasks I need, like running Word or streaming lectures, so I suppose maximizing the gaming aspect is the most important thing to me as far as value is concerned. I've done a little shopping around, and it seems like the Acer Nitro 5 is a good fit for my budget. But I know next to nothing about which configuration is best, or whether or not I might be able to pick up something a little beefier for around the same price point. Thanks a lot guys! submitted by /u/Enraged_Milkman [link] [comments] |

Is there a better alternative for my use in college? Looking at the XPS 15 Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:08 PM PDT Hello All! First of all thanks for your help, I've been lurking for about a while now but I still can't make a decision. I'm looking at the XPS 15 9570 because I think its to the best fit but i don't know if it'll be overkill for my kinds of use. Total budget and country of purchase: USA. About $1500, would prefer to go less though. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specifications with a battery long enough to last a day of classes. How important is weight and thinness to you? weight and thinness is important, don't want any extra exercise, that's what walking to class is for Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows pls. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. about 15" is good. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I desire to run some Adobe Premiere Pro, I only edit in 1080p. Some Photoshop, light-casual gaming but not that important. dGPU though for sure. I would also like to be able to record my PS4 gameplay through capture card @60fps because my current laptop can't If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? not too worried just a dGPU Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would prefer the best in each category but not picky. At least 16gb or ram would be cool. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been looking at the Dell XPS 15 9570 but I can't seem to pull the trigger. The configuration I want is currently out of stock. I feel like I was tunnel visioned on this device because of that new beautiful 8th gen hexa-core processor. I'm guessing I need someone to convince me that a quad core is still sufficient for these kinds of tasks and which product you would recommend. Ask any more questions if i wasn't clear enough. Thanks :) submitted by /u/heffboyardee [link] [comments] |
Can't decide between Acer and HP as a gaming and school laptop. Posted: 01 Jul 2018 03:28 PM PDT |
Surface or alternatives for a college student? Posted: 02 Jul 2018 12:24 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $1000 or lower (lower is better) but can go up to $1500 if it's really worth it. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer a 2 in 1 form factor. Battery life is also important to me, but if I have to sacrifice so much power I have to wait significantly longer for things to load I might as well just use time to plug it in instead haha. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not awfully important as I have worse things to worry about, but if it's not to the expense to a lot of battery power or computing power then of course thinner and lighter is better. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Prefer Windows, but Linux, Chrome OS, and Mac OS work too. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm going to be bringing my desktop to my dorm and will be doing most of my CAD work and more intensive Gaming on that. That being said, maybe some very light gaming, programming, and photo editing. Just basics like Visual Studio Code, Git, and Photoshop/Lightroom (although maybe not so much photoediting if needed). Also a plus if I can do music work on it with Reaper and Musescore/Sibeliusj (these shouldn't be a problem as they're fairly lightweight, nothing more than pretty basic photoshop usage). If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Probably won't be playing anything much more intensive than Overwatch and even then, not extremely necessary. I'd be shooting for 60 fps on medium/low. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard is not really important since I'll be using an external one almost all the time. Detachable or something that I can hide away would be best (hence the 2 in one preference). I'd also like a good touchscreen with a good compatible active stylus for taking notes. If possible, also I'd like for it to have low device latency for working with music, but again not absolutely necessary because there are other things I can do to meet this requirement. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was initially thinking some kind of Surface since it seems pretty popular for people who like to do digital drawing and digital design and that seems like a quality that would be great for something I'd use for notetaking and just doing homework at the library and around campus which is my ultimate number 1 concern. But of course popular doesn't mean the best quality or value and so I'm definitely open to suggestions. Thank you very much! submitted by /u/Meeesh- [link] [comments] |
Cheap laptop where I can add a ssd Posted: 02 Jul 2018 01:06 AM PDT Let me start off by saying, I want a really cheap laptop where I might be able to add a ssd. Therefore, the storage does not matter. It won't matter that much in the first place because it mainly will just be used for internet and watching videos. Total budget and country of purchase: As cheap as possible but will go to $300 Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't care Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I don't care. Maybe windows to play some games that are not on linux or chrome os Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Bigger than 12in Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. The types of games I will run can be run on integrated graphics such as prison architect, stardew valley, ftl, and undertale Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I don't want it to feel cheap. I don't want cheap plastic. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have a beefy gaming pc and this laptop will be for browsing the internet either in bed or in front of the tv. I will use it very occasionally on vacation as my main computer but again all I will use is email and internet. submitted by /u/Nelluc_ [link] [comments] |

[Japan][~200,000 Yen] Gaming/programming laptop Posted: 02 Jul 2018 12:04 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Currently in Japan and have an upper budget limit of about 200,000 yen (~$1,800). Could stretch the budget a bit more if there is a better option. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. The best specification for the budget is preferred. Battery life isn't that important as I will have the laptop plugged in most of the time. Would even prefer laptops with bad battery as long as the specs are better. Or if there is a 15-17 inch gaming AIO PC :P How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too thick and heavy (for my semi-annual travels) but not too thin and light as well (more expensive). Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inch is preferred to save some money, but 17 inch is alright too. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly for gaming but planning to try 3D modeling and game dev in the future. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Witcher 3, Tomb Raider, and similar games + CSGO, DOTA2. Hopefully High settings with 60+ fps. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A solid build quality is preferred as I would like to use this for 4-5 years. Finger print reader would be a bonus but not required. Others (touch screen, finger print, optical drive) are not needed. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. - Prefer to buy a laptop with gtx1070 and english keyboard.
- Already checked the online stores that I could find, and noticed that the pre-built laptops sold here are much more expensive.
- Tried to check for BTO sellers (hopefully clevo based) and I'm not sure about their quality as I can't find reviews for them. G-tune from Mouse PC, Level(?) from Iiyama, and also saw G-gear from Tokumo. . . Please share if you have experience with these laptops
- Also found a deal for Alienware japan which will end today. Not sure if it is worth it tho. Here are the specs: Alienware 15 R4? (2018): i7-8750, gtx1070, 16gb RAM ddr4 2666mhz, 256SSD + 1tb 7200rpm HDD, 120hz TN gsync (not sure if this is better than the 60hz IPS gsync), english keyboard and OS. Cost 230,000 yen with tax, which is about $2078 (based from google).

Legion y530 vs HP pavilion gaming. Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:37 PM PDT Okay need to decide between two laptops. Need to use it for coding with slight gaming on the side. Will have to carry it to class so a slightly good battery would be appreciated. - Lenovo legion y530 930$
- HP pavillion Gaming 880$
The legion does have the way more powerful processor(i7 8750H) vs the i5 8300H on the HP, along with the gorgeous screen. However the battery life does seem troublesome along with being higher priced. Help would be appreciated. Thank You. submitted by /u/kissmyASSthama_5 [link] [comments] |
[US, $700-$1,700] A graphic design student looking for a portable laptop for heavy general use and 2D graphics Posted: 01 Jul 2018 11:25 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Up to around $1700, purchasing from US Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. At least 6-8 hours or more in battery life. 2 in 1 model with touchscreen and pen would very much be preferred, but I'm willing to exchange that for a steep discount and better specs, since I do already have a no-screen graphics tablet. I also do lots of multitasking, often with a dozen tabs and one or two other programs open at a time, so I want something that can handle that without burning my skin when I go to type on it. How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, since I've got to carry it with me a lot. Under 2 lbs would be ideal but I'm willing to go to 3 lbs for better specs. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows OS, tentatively Mac OS Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12-14 inches Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Moderate to heavy use of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Light use of Premiere Pro and 3D animation software. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Light to moderate gaming use, for games like Sims 4, etc. I'd like at least medium graphics settings. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I need solid build quality that will last me 4+ years. It would be nice if it looked good, too. SSD is a must. Touch-screen is preferable, but only if it's also a 2-in-1 with pen support (either included or purchased separately). Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This will be my main laptop for general home and school work for the foreseeable future. I'm willing to spend more for the best, since it needs to last me a while. I only know of the specs I need from what I've gleaned reading a bunch of laptop reviews, so feel free to recommend the processor and graphics card, since I really can't decipher the brands and names. I have a running list of a few laptops that would possibly fit, mainly the Dell XPS 13, HP spectre x360, and the Lenovo Yoga 920 and 720, but I don't know if there are more options I haven't explored yet. Not sure I was clear enough or too wordy while filling this out, but thanks for your suggestions in advance! submitted by /u/seasheby [link] [comments] |

Help me pick a portable gaming laptop Posted: 01 Jul 2018 04:31 PM PDT I am looking for the smallest and lightest I can find. Small 15.6" but would prefer a 14". I went and saw the HP Omen, and it is clunky and heavy (6lbs I think.) I will be bringing this on the train. I want an Intel 8750H for Rpcs3 and longevity and a Geforce 1060 or better ideally, if its possible. I don't want to keep makong the same mistake of buying a machine outdated from Day 1. Originally I was hoping for spending $1,000, but I have now resigned to spend up to $1,500. Located in the USA. Don't really care about battery life. HP has a Pavilion 15t lighter and smaller than an Omen and a great deal, I am currently considering. I just customized one online for $1,100. The MSI GS65 looks great but is expensive probably out of my price range and I have seen some very bad reviews for some of their other products. I was liking the Acer Swift3 but the CPU isn't going to cut it for Rpcs3 submitted by /u/neph36 [link] [comments] |
Comp Sci Uni Laptop 500-700 CAD Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:38 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $500-$700 CAD (May go a little above 700) Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. A decent battery life that'll last me a days use fully charged, good specs because I may play some games but pretty low end (League of Legends) How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat light would be nice, I wouldn't like to carry a cinder block. Pretty important as it's going to be a constant carry around. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Preferably Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Not too important, nothing huge though, maybe 16 inches max and no small than 12/13. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm taking comp sci, and occasionally use it for gaming, mainly league of legends. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Medium-low settings are fine with me, smooth 60-100 fps league mainly. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Decent touch pad, may use on transit. Nice build quality, nice feel keyboard but not too picky, just used to mechanical. Would prefer an ssd + hdd combo if possible. If not at least an ssd for productivity. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thanks in advance for the help! Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:34 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: 700-950 USD, United States Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I dislike 2 in 1. I only intend to use it as a laptop on a desk. I would take better specs over battery life. - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Zero importance. - Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
Windows 10 - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
If you could provide options between 13 and 15+, that would be amazing!! - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Music editing- usually in finale or musescore. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard quality is incredibly important to me. I'd rather not have a hard drive- I'm looking for SSD only. However, large storage capacity isn't important at all. 128 or 256 is more than enough. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm going to be studying politics, music, and physics at college. Any processor heavy science work will be done on school machines, and I won't be gaming. Is a dedicated GPU worth it in any way? I'll be reading and typing about 8 hours a day. I already own an unused copy of Office, so that doesn't need to be factored into the budget. I'm willing to spend more if it means a longer lived pc. Thank you so much for your time! submitted by /u/lukoschambernoob [link] [comments] |
Razer 14 just turned into a paperweight, looking for a new, better brain for a peripheral body of sorts. $2500USD budget for a student/gaming/music editing laptop. Thanks in advance. As pretty as I can get it for 60+ FPS Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? At home, I plug my laptop into what I can only describe as a Gundam of sorts: USB hub with keyboard, mouse, headset; 2.1 Speaker system; external monitor; external SSD via Thunderbolt 3. So I basically don't touch the laptop when I'm home. That being said, id like something durable with a good cooling system.
