Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:17 PM PDT Hi just a question about if I were to run a very long Ethernet cable from my living room to my room. Would it work if i just connected one side to the router and one side to my PC and leave the cable on the floor? Because when i look this up, I see a lot of 'making a network jack' a stuff. Please clarify. thanks:) [link] [comments] |

Why have I lost access to adult websites? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:06 PM PDT UPDATE: The problem fixed itself it seems, as /u/xmentalx said in the comments, there may have been an outage. Perhaps they were forcing me to use a DNS server that was blocking me from these sites during the outage. I'll leave this up as it might help a future pour soul :) I think my ISP is blocking access to adult websites, the most popular ones. I can't figure out who or what else it could be, please help if you know what might be happening. For reference, I live in the US on the east coast, using charter spectrum. Steps I've taken to try and fix the problem:
I got it working after I connected a VPN... does this not sound like my ISP blocking me from adult sites? I have had the same ISP now for years without issues. Any help is greatly appreciated. *Posting this on a throw away account for obvious reasons [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2018 03:26 AM PDT I have a usb connected to my laptop and I've transferred all files / pictures to it (and deleted them off the laptops drive). My laptop needs 1g of space for part A of the update (Part B is with the usb drive) I can't remove anything else off the laptop (It's windows 10) it won't let me remove any windows or microsoft apps). If I deleted google chrome, Shockwave and HP Print SW I still wouldn't have enough space. I did the disk cleanup but it barely did anything, my recycle bin is empty. It says I have 3.7gb of space in temp files but when I remove files nothing happens (no space is removed) I have 3gb of space in apps and games but all the apps are needed (the only ones I don't need is xbox and onenote but I can't remove them). The amount of space I need to remove is actually increasing everytime I refresh it (WTF?) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2018 03:24 AM PDT Hey people! I have been using a laptop, a Lenovo Yoga 500, for some time until I couldn't turn it on anymore. Before sending it to Lenovo to have it get repaired, I had all my data and software mirrored on a hard drive (by someone who works in a tech store) in case they would delete everything . The question I have is whether this mirror will work just as well on a newer version of the device? There obviously should be some differences in technology, right? Or will it be fine? Note that I really want the mirror instead of a regular backup, as there is some software installed I need on the newer device too. Thanks a lot in advance! [link] [comments] |
Removed a virus, but my accounts are getting hacked. Posted: 31 Jul 2018 12:31 AM PDT I got a virus a few days ago and I disconnected my internet immediately. I hooked it back up to the internet after removing the virus. I thought all was good until about an hour ago, when I got a notification from Google telling me that my password has been changed. Shortly afterwards, I got one from Microsoft saying the same thing. I panicked and went through all my accounts and enabled two factor authentication along with changed all my passwords. I've installed multiple antivirus software in the past few days and they all said that my computer was virus free...yet my accounts got hacked. Should I just wipe my computer? My PC is running Win10, but I'm not too sure how to back it up as I don't actually have a disc. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:12 PM PDT so my hard drive fucked up a while ago and i thought i could just never replace it until i bought a new laptop. now that i know that i can replace my old busted one, i want an upgrade instead of just a replacement. (though i guess u could say any hard drive that WORKS would be an upgrade) the factory version is an HP 669299-001 - 500GB 5.4K RPM SATA 7mm 2.5" and i have no idea if just any 2.5 internal hard drive would do or if like my computer just wont allow me to use a different version. any help is very appreciated, and if u need me to elaborate i will try my best because i'm honestly not very tech savvy. tldr: my old hard drive is busted, need a good replacement for a HP 669299-001 - 500GB 5.4K RPM SATA 7mm 2.5" [link] [comments] |
4k TV seen by windows as 1080p native Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:46 PM PDT Yesterday I bought a Philips 43PUS6503 4K TV that can handle 4k@60 4:4:4. I am connecting it to my GTX1080 using a HDMI 2.0 cable that I bought alongside the TV. I have tried both port 2 and 3, the ones advertised as being able to handle 4k60. In the TV settings -> input settings I have set the HDMI mode to "optimal", which the tooltip claims is the best option, the one that enables 4k60 444 HDR and all of that stuff. The TV works in 4k60. The only issue I'm practically having, the reason I even care, is that subpixel rendering is awful. I am intending to use it as my monitor so I have set the scaling to 100% and disabled the windows clear text thing that caused some black letters to be blue. However lines that should be straight are not, pixels sometimes are rendered on the side of where they need to be. The Display settings menu in Windows tells me that 1080p is the recommended resolution, even though UHD resolutions are present above as well. I suspect that might be the reason it doesn't know how to render properly. nVidia control panel correctly identifies the screen as a "Phillips FTV" (IIRC), but device manager has it as "Generic PNP monitor". Sadly I am not home at the moment to try your suggestions but I greatly appreciate any hints as to what I can try to troubleshoot. I have of course tried the other two HDMI options in the TV (both of which disable 4k60). I have also set it to "monitor mode" which didn't help the image but introduced a huge amount of input lag for whatever reason. I am currently on "Gaming" mode with all processing off as it's the only one that doesn't have 200ms lag. [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to move Windows 10 to an SSD without having to make a backup of all my data? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:00 AM PDT What the title says. I have a 120GB SSD for my PC which I would now like to move Windows 10 on, and some other programs. However, rather than having to delete all my stuff, or move it to another HDD, is it possible to simply move windows itself from the original HDD to the SSD? If not, I still have a second HDD which I will just have to move all my data onto. How do I make sure I move the non-essential data onto that so that only windows files are on the first HDD? Screwed up by BCLK, can I still get into my bios? Posted: 31 Jul 2018 02:24 AM PDT UPDATE: I'm really just being lazy here, I knew the answer the whole time but I was just hoping there was another way. It's just stressful having to move a million fucking things around to get to the one thing that I actually need to reset. This is really a non issue now... and anyone else who's encountering this, just pop that battery out, 'tis the only way unless you motherboard lets you reset another way. Was trying to play with a few settings and apparently I screwed it up already. So, I had tried to increase my base clock speed on my asrock z97... and yeah my whole system wouldn't start. Figured I'd have to remove the battery to reset it, but there's so many wires in front of it that's almost impossible. Luckily I had gotten into the bios screen after a few resets, and could fix it. Problem solved! Well um... well until I tried to do it again. I increased it by a much smaller amount, was still too much because I'm dumb with this kinda thing apparently, and now it won't get past the asrock logo screen. So, it's not as crazily unstable as before, but I also don't have the luck I did before, because it just simply isn't getting into the bios for me now. Just kinda crashes on the asrock screen no matter how long I spam f2/del. On like 2 of the 10 times I tried resetting it, it got half way into the bios but crashed there. So, tomorrow not only do I have to move my 26 pound monitor on my small little desk area yet again, but I don't think I'll be getting any good grip on it unless I start unplugging a lot of crap. I could do this, and of course I will if it comes down to it... but here I am, just simply hoping there's a simple solution to at least let me get into the bios screen and just fix this one number! So recap... system technically boots, doesn't get into bios screen (just the screen promoting you to get into it), simply need to change a bios setting and get out, wire management is a huge pain to get to the cell battery, hoping there's another way. I figure it's just trying to draw too much power... anything I can do to tell it to calm the heck down for two seconds and let me get into the bios? I dunno. Thanks for any support, again I know it sounds lazy of me but I really just don't want to dig around in my internals if I don't have to. Just need in the bios! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2018 12:43 AM PDT Hey guys, i changed my desktop location to my other hard drive to make up some space on my SSD. So i moved it from C:/Users/Alex/Desktop to E:/, and I didn't realize it made every single file in E:/ to be placed on my desktop....How can i set up my PC so my desktop data is saved into a separate folder. Furthermore, I have A TON of folders that appeard in E:/named weird things such as c4, b8. 0b. f9, e7, etc etc etc, and idk where they came from, but they're just making it a pain to find shit, and they're mostly 0kb :/ Thus now my desktop is just covered in about 300 files, most of which are this e3, 4b shit. Also I can't seem to find my original folder called 'Desktop'.... So there is no such thing as: E:/Desktop [link] [comments] |

I can't load certain websites, and don't know why? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:17 PM PDT It seems that I am being blocked from accessing certain websites. One example is range365.com a blog/site about firearms, and while it seems other websites load quick, easy, and as normal, other websites just don't work. When I try it jumps to a page that says I am not connected to the internet. This is on both my laptop, and my phone. I have tried it via, bing, google, safari, and firefox and I cannot get it to load. Any thoughts? Is some large company *cough* google *cough* doing something on purpose, or could it be my internet provider. Thanks for the help. [link] [comments] |
Email got hacked, hacker is signing up me to a bunch of spam Posted: 31 Jul 2018 01:56 AM PDT I just made a post two hours ago about my account getting hacked. The hacker just signed me up to a bunch of spam. What can I do to stop it? Edit: It's been a bit over 30 minutes and I've gotten over 1600 emails. Seems like Google has caught onto it and is now automatically flagging things as spam. I am getting a lot of "change your password" emails from wordpress for domains that I have no affiliation with. I own a Wordpress website and I've already changed the password to it. I don't know if this is unusual traffic is going to affect my domain. Would love some expert opinions. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 07:55 PM PDT I recently bought a new cpu and cpu cooler, and installed them tonight. After connecting everything and turning my pc on, my pc went on an on and off loop. I tried simplifying the issue down to only the mobo, psu, cpu and cpu cooler connected, and had the same issue. The pc managed to stay on when the 4 pin cpu socket was not connected. Without a boot up though, I went back to my old cpu and cpu fan and tried connecting everything, and ran into the same issue. My pc starts, fans spinning, and after a couple of seconds, it shuts off. Again, I simplified the situation and the same issue persists. What do I do? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 08:23 PM PDT So my friend had an ASUS laptop lying around and he told me the fan was not working. He said I could mess around with it and try to fix it. So I verified the fan inside was dead, it wouldn't spin when powered on. I ordered a new one, it came in today, and I installed it. Yet it still won't spin. This leads me to believe that the socket where the fan connector is plugged is dead somehow. Anyways, I kinda want this laptop to work, and I am looking for a solution. I thought of possibly wiring up the 5v line and ground line from the fan elsewhere on the board, such as a USB port or the optical drive SATA port. Would this be a good solution? I can't really think of any reasons why not besides a constant fan speed. Unless you have other suggestions on what to try. [link] [comments] |
Computer freezes when visiting certain websites Posted: 31 Jul 2018 12:07 AM PDT Lately (starting about 3 months ago) when I visit certain websites my computer will completely freeze. It has happened most notably when visiting Facebook and Imgur, but rarely as I can visit those sites often and this only happens like 1% of the time, making it hard to find patterns of what causes it. It seems to be that if something starts to load and I input another command, whether that be clicking or hitting the back button, Google Chrome will freeze visually. I can still move my mouse for a little while, and background tabs like youtube or pandora will continue to stream but I can't tab over to them. I can't interact with abything on the screen with the mouse, and no visuals appear when hovering over things. After a while though that will stop, my mouse will freeze, and even the caps lock light on my keyboard won't light up when I hit the button. My only option then is to hold the power button until it shuts off. I have tried to troubleshoot online but I can't describe it well enough in the google search to get any good results. I am running an Asus ROG laptop with 16GB of RAM, Intel I-7, and Intel HD Graphics alongside an Nvidia graphics card. This has only happened on Google Chrome, as I don't use other web browsers. Any help is appreciated or links to others with similar problems. I have already lost unsaved data due to this crash and really want to figure it out. Until I do though, I'll probably just not visit either Facebook or Imgur. [link] [comments] |

Cannot connect to internet (Windows did not detect a properly installed network adapter) Posted: 30 Jul 2018 05:37 PM PDT Hello, so today I received a new graphics card and after I replaced my old one, my internet no longer worked (was working right before). I know it is not the modem since my wifi works and I also tried plugging in the ethernet cable into my laptop and that worked fine. I tried to reinstall my drivers for the motherboard and it did not work. Below are the errors I get. Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-AB350-Gaming 3 (I can update with any other specs that might be needed) Telling me to install a network adapter: https://imgur.com/a/EGcbzuU When I try to reinstall my drivers: https://imgur.com/a/OpU7DvD Device Manager Network adapters tab: https://imgur.com/a/7mziLIS EDIT: Tried reseting bios settings to default and the different methods in this article. https://adeelejaz.com/blog/realteks-network-controller-deep-sleep-mode-issue/ EDIT 2: Old GPU does not work either [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:57 PM PDT Hello smart people! I need some help going about extending my wifi range in my house. I made a sketch of my house which explains the problem. Please have a look. I dont know about network bridges or repeaters really. Everything works with the one repeater i have. I bought and plugged in another one to reach the first one and that just seemed to crash the network. No internet. Is there a way to solve this with a long ethernet cable and a device closer to the area i need covered? Any suggestions welcome. Sorry about any strange wording, english is not my first language. Edit: Missing words. Words are hard. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2018 10:03 PM PDT One of my trial and error steps while diagnosing my poor download speeds in Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit was to run Linux off a usb at boot, and do the same speed test. Sure enough...I'm getting full download speeds, about 15-20MB/s..vs 570kb in Windows. In Windows, It's the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller, driver 7.54.309.2012. In Linux, I looked at the network settings and all it says is R8169. So it just made me wonder if that is the driver Linux identified as the closest match, or if that somehow corresponds to the installed driver in Windows. And whether there is a generic network controller driver I can try if I think this realtek version is my problem. This goes for my WIFI as well...if I don't download the drivers before uninstalling them in Windows, I will be stuck needing to find the drivers, stick them on a USB, and install them. But if I had NO network drivers in Windows, then live booted into Linux via USB..would those drivers be 'available' and thus a working network? [link] [comments] |
Updating Windows breaks my pc! Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:11 PM PDT Hi all, So since Windows 10 has been around I've not had a very smooth ride! The initial launch left my expectations pretty low as it was almost impossible to update my pc (baring in mind I updated 4 other pcs with no problem at all!) However, whenever I update my own pc I seem to have issues. First of all all of my usb ports stopped working which, annoyingly meant I could not use my pc at all (I had a password to log into my user which I could not enter as neither my keyboard nor mouse worked!) Eventually this issue just seemed to go away after a few months of reverting back to Windows 7. However, the most recent problem I seem to be having (and the reason I am asking the lovely people of reddit for help) is whenever I try to update my version of Windows (original to version 1709, which was fixed with a clean install of that version) I seem to just break my os install. I am not currently trying to update to 1803 from 1709 and at certain points my pc just seems to freeze when it shuts down on 100% for hours till I eventually give up and manually shut down, this then leads to either Windows being able to revert back to 1709 or (most recenrly) having to install windows again as a clean copy as it just gets into a loop of constant restarts after reaching the bios splash screen, if I so manage to get my pc to shut down and restart during an update, it will then get to around 54% then just get to a black screen again for hours doing nothing! Once again I manually restart after giving up and it reverts back! Any help as to what this could be would be very very appreciated!! (Also I'm sorry if that didn't make any sense... feel free to pm me and I'll try to explain a bit better!) My system (if this is needed is as follows) Win 10 1709 I5 4690k Asus tuf sabertooth z87 Gtx gigabyte g1 gaming 980 Samsubg evo 850 250gb ssd WD 1tb black hdd Again all help is appreciated!!! Thanks, Ben [link] [comments] |
Black Screen/Windows Start Menu not showing Posted: 30 Jul 2018 11:05 PM PDT I have Windows 10. Gen 4 i7, GTX 760, 8GB RAM. Earlier, windows perform an update. Then after restart, it boots really slow and upon logging in, it turns black, couple of minutes before desktop displays. Then, you can access apps aside from Start Menu. Help? What is going on? Posted: 30 Jul 2018 09:51 PM PDT So, i'm planning on buying a 120GB SSD to follow up with my 1TB HDD. Also moving the OS from the HDD to SSD. I had a few queries as SSD's are new to me, 1) Will it support my motherboard ASUS M5A78L-M ? (Mostly going for WD SSD) - is M.2 supported as well? 2) Will it be worth it (beneficial in the long run) ? 3) Any other advantages? Edit: typo errors [link] [comments] |
