    [SALE] Acer Nitro 5 - i5-7300HQ, GTX 1050Ti, 256GB SSD - $580

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 02:52 PM PDT

The Acer Nitro 5 has gone on sale at Best Buy for $580.

    Specs include:

    • Intel 7th Gen i5-7300HQ processor
    • 8GB Ram
    • Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti
    • 256GB
    • 1080p IPS display
    • 5.95 lbs
    • 48Wh battery (up to ~6 hours light use)

You can watch a review here from Dave Lee where he doesn't recommend the laptop at it's original $900 price tag because "the thermal design is not good. [...] For a gaming laptop with a GTX 1050 Ti, it is not ideal". Keep this in mind if you're planning on using this for demanding gaming.

You can read another detailed review here from NotebookCheck.

I'd say this is about as good of a deal as you can get on a laptop with a GTX 1050 Ti - even better than most Black Friday deals. However, be aware that new Nvidia Volta GPUs should be coming out before the end of 2018.

Have spare MX300 256 GB drive - VivoBook F510UA a good choice for general use laptop?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 10:58 PM PDT

I have a 4 year old, but lightly used, Crucial MX300 256 drive in an older, essentially no-value laptop we'll be replacing.

I'm thinking of a VivoBook F510UA and just swapping in the MX300 SSD (I don't mind having to reinstall everything).

Budget: <$600 as max-max. Below that it's just what the best deal is.

    Country: USA

    Screen size: 15.X-17.X

    Screen resolution: >= 1920 x 1080

    Touch screen: Doesn't matter

Weight: This is for my spouse, and they'd appreciate lighter in a vague way - but this will mostly just be used at home. No hard limits on weight.

    Main purpose of laptop: Internet

If you will be gaming: No gaming.

Is battery life an issue? Not much - this will mostly be used around home.

Misc:Do care somewhat about screen quality (though current no-value laptop is a TN screen anyway), and build quality.

Thoughts? The Acer Aspire 5 would seem like a better (in general) deal right now - but its perks don't matter much for me:

    • Stronger graphics card (doesn't matter, at all)
    • SSD (already have a 'spare' one)
    • Slightly better battery - nice, but not a huge deal
    • Backlight keyboard - don't care

    Vs. the ASUS

    • I haven't seen either in person but...purdier?
    • Lighter / smaller
    • Vague idea that ASUS is a nicer brand, usually
    • Not on sale currently - but lower base price, and am OK waiting for a sale.

Are there other ways the Aspire 5 (or Asus) is better? Or, is there another laptop you'd recommend?

    1500-2000 Netherlands

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 03:58 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Somewhere between 1500 to 2000 euros,

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. The laptop is mostly for gaming but iam planning to use it at school to, I'll be able to stay plugged in almost always.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important as long as it's not a hassle to bring to school

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I prefer windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 or 15.6 inch is probably best for me.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mostly gaming but also programming for school.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? What I play mostly is games like GTA v, shadow of Mordor and overwatch, I'd love to be able to use the highest settings for these games, but anything my budget can afford iam okay with.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? At least 1tb HDD and an SSD for windows

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been looking at the msi ge63, but I was wondering if there's a better way to go.

Id love to see your recommendations!!!

Gaming Laptop for €1000 (or €1200) in the Netherlands.

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 02:38 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Total budget would be up to €1000. Optionally I could spend up to €1200. The Netherlands is the country of purchase.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm only interested in best specs for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Neither matters to me.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. The bigger the better if you know what I mean. :D

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Laptop will be used only for gaming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? World of Warcraft will be the main game I'll be playing. Aim is to raid/do m+ at Ultra settings. Other than that I'll be playing Stellaris, EU IV, Starcraft 2, Football Manager 20xx. AAA games I'll leave for my desktop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Cooling is what really matters to me. Often I'll be playing for up to 6+ hours and I want the laptop to not overheat.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've never owned a gaming Laptop before, but the current situation forced me to either forget gaming or get something I can travel with and play few games here and there. Plus new expansion for WoW is coming out in few weeks so I thought why the hell not try something new.

Thank you all for your time!

Need a new laptop for Uni

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 01:51 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase:

USA, I'd like to spend <$600

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

I don't care about 2 in 1. Good battery life is very important to me. I'd like good specifications, but I won't be using this for gaming so it's not that important. However, I will be programming on it so an SSD and decent RAM is important. Having a good charging port is also very important to me. I currently have an Acer Spin 5 (6th gen) and the charging port is flimsy. I want something that isn't going to break after a year.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight is important to me because I'll be carrying it around with me all day around Uni. Thinness is less important, but I don't want a brick.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I don't want anything smaller than 13.1 or larger than 15. I prefer a screen on the lower end though.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'm a computer science student so the laptop has to be able to run IDEs well.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd prefer a good keyboard and want the build to be high quality, but whatever is possible for <$600 is fine. A touch-screen is also preferred, but not a requirement.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I think I already gave everything that was needed? I really like my Acer Spin 5. My only problem with it is that its charging port is really flimsy. I've had it for 14 months and it takes a few minutes of effort just to get it to start charging. In those 14 months, I have never used the 2-in-1 feature. The touchscreen is nice, however, so I'd like to keep that if possible. The battery life is supposedly 8 hours which has been more than enough. I think I could get away with as little as 6 hours if that would increase my performance. Aside from school, I use the laptop to watch movies on. A high resolution screen with good colors would also be nice.

Tech-Challenged Student looking for the right Laptop for College, need help badly! :(

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 09:57 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I am not the most technically savvy and have been pulling my hair out trying to find the right computer to help me through college the next few years.

Total budget and country of purchase: (USD, I'm in Indiana/United States!) Most comfortable around $550 but am willing to go upwards to $800 if people really insist upon it.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I think I would like a 2 in 1 because I want to ditch paper and be able to take notes / write papers on my laptop. Good battery life is also a big plus because I will be in class for several hours a day. I really would like something that's a good fit for using microsoft word, excell, powerpoint, one note, and etc. GPU is not a big deal because I have a desktop I use for gaming, this laptop would be for low-end gaming (Pokemon TCG, Hearthstone, Runescape, etc. ) as well as Youtube, but I have no intention of playing high tier games on high graphic settings. I would prefer a snappy CPU to help me do these things quickly and comfortably.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important, I think I'll deal with it no matter how big it is or heavy.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. If there are any old school gamers on here, the most intensive gaming I'll do is probably Phantasy Star Online. I would also play some runescape and pokemon TCG here and there as well. I'll also emulate games with a gamecube emulator. Otherwise I will be using this for browsing the web, youtube, and Microsoft Office. It's primarily going to be for school! Oh I read a lot of manga as well.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Phantasy Star Online, Runescape, Some Gamecube emulated games through Dophin like Fire Emblem path of radiance. Nothing fancy, but I wouldn't want these games to lag! :(

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Something that will last me through college with a nice keyboard. A stylus would be really good too, it would be super handy if it had a touch screen that I could write on, I want to save on using paper!!

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I think an SSD of 256GB and over would be good, my friend told me SSD drives are faster. I'm sorry if this isn't very helpful I'm not very technical, thank you all for the help in advance!!

Looking for a budget gaming laptop under $400, is this a good option?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 09:55 PM PDT

    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=1TS-000X-00TX8&cm_re=acer_aspire_e15-_-1TS-000X-00TX8-_-Product

Specifically, I'm wanting something that can handle low to medium settings on most modern/3D games at feasible FPS (doesn't have to be 60, but preferably more than 30).

    Info

    • I'm in the U.S.
    • Battery life isn't particularly important, but would be nice
    • Preferably thin and relatively lightweight
    • 1080p resolution preferred, but can downgrade to adjust to budget
    • Game examples are Dragon's Dogma, Soma, Dishonored, and Shadow Tactics

    15" laptops with 3240x2160 (4K/3:2) resolution?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 01:09 AM PDT

I'm looking for candidates for a new laptop.

I'm looking for a 15 HiDPI with a 3:2 screen. The only one I know is the Surface Book, but I'd like separate layout for the arrows keys (like this: https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-078e5bc4dcc42471f866cbebccfef60c-c, I don't know how it's called, not like this https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRVLdZf7zm8goVY2v8epQN9AzKYZAs7MEuZxAGy1L-xKkh5oiH4).

The Dell XPS 15 would be a great candidate, but it doesn't have a 3:2 monitor.

    What are my options?

Looking for a laptop to play EU4, budget is $600

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 05:32 PM PDT

EU4 is a CPU-heavy grand strategy game, so I mostly want a good cpu, but I'm a total newbie to buying computers so I don't know what CPU is a good CPU.

My only preference is that it be Windows. I don't care about weight, battery life, or anything like that, as it'll be in my lap in my house 99.9% of the time I'm using in

Laptop for CS Major. About ~$1000, purchasing in the US.

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 09:11 PM PDT

Hi r/SuggestALaptop! I'll be entering my sophomore year in college as a computer science major in the fall. My current computer was purchased in early high school when I knew absolutely nothing about computers, and it shows.... I desperately need a new one. I still don't know much about hardware, but I do know I'd like a laptop to carry me reliably through the rest of college. My program doesn't publish computing requirements or recommendations, so any expertise on what might be relevant for a CS course of study would be welcomed.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: I'm looking to spend between $800 and $1000. I'll go as high as $1200 with a very compelling reason. I'll be purchasing in the US.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. My priority would be a good battery life, closely followed by best specifications (for programming) for my budget. My current computer is 2-in-1 and I never use the tablet format, ever.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? A smaller, thinner computer is pretty important. As a college student who carries her laptop literally (not a misuse--literally) everywhere, portability is essential.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I like having Windows on my machine for certain uses but doing day-to-day things and programming in Linux. I have my current machine set up to dual-boot Windows 8.1 (not ideal) and KDE Neon.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Less than 14". Currently I have 11.6" and I like it, although it is a bit small for when my programming projects involve having lots of code open at once.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I don't game. I mainly want to run my programming projects for class and do internet browsing/word processing. My college career might involve some mathematical modeling software in later years, but I don't have specifics.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'm strongly attached to my touchscreen. A good keyboard is important because of the amount of time I'll spend programming. I'd also like something durable enough to last a few years.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically, I want something optimized for programming/software development that I can also use to watch Netflix occasionally. Something with space for more RAM might be useful so I don't have to buy an entirely new computer if my specifications change.

From my other research, one machine that looks to meet a lot of my expectations is the HP Envy 13. Thoughts?

    Thanks for your time!

Laptop primarily for digital art (photoshop, aftereffects) and gaming

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:51 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Up to ~$1500, US
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Order of precedence: Best specifications of the money, then good battery life, then 2 in 1
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Bigger is better
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Various games, photoshop, after effects. Must be able to run multiple Adobe Creative Suite programs simultaneously
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good quality screen for image editing
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Mostly will use this for work. The main use will be photoshop, after effects, and other image editing/animation programs. Some 3D editing and gaming.

Best GTX 1060 laptop with good cooling and a decent price?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 08:58 PM PDT

Preferred Budget: $950, USA Screen Size: 15.6 Inches GPU: GTX 1060, could also be the Max Q version.

I'm mainly looking for one that would last a long time and has good cooling. From what I've seen, it seems like the Dell 7577 is the best laptop for me. However, I'm in no rush to get a new laptop but I'm wondering, is it best I get one now if I find an amazing deal or should I just wait longer? It honestly seems like the prices are only increasing.

Daytrader looking for a 17 inch 4K laptop with an i7 and 16GB of RAM & Geforce Graphics. Ireland/$2000

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:34 AM PDT

I'm a daytrader so I spend most of my time looking at charts which I do via Tradingview.com. It can be resource intensive at times, particular with a dozen charting tabs, often with eight charts per layout.

I currently have a Dell 5580 (the i5-7440HQ model) which is under a bit of strain but works fine if I manage my tabs and use The Great Suspender in Chrome. I really like Dell machines and have owned the 5570, 5560 & 5540 with no problems whatsoever.

The main requirement is graphic power. I've got my laptop screen, a 1080p Asus MB16AC USB-C monitor, an LG 25UM57 25" 1080p Ultrawide plus a Panasonic TX-50EX700B 50" UHD TV split into six 'monitors' using an application called DisplayFusion.

    1. I'm fairly sure you can't get laptops with dual HDMI out, but what are the other options?
    2. Is a dock (like the Dell D6000) the best option for running two or three external monitors? Startech USB hardware looks interesting for this
    3. Something something Displayport maybe, or DVI to HDMI adapters?
    4. My current laptop has an Intel 630 onboard card. Am I right in thinking that it mostly uses my processor for video and a Geforce will take all this strain instead, which will stop my cooling fan from whirring occasionally?
    5. Currently the TV displays at 30Hz even though it's rated as high as 1600Hz, will a Geforce fix this?

I travel regularly so weight is important. This kinda rules out Alienware machines I've looked at which are around 4.5kg. I've included it below anyway cause of those sweet, sweet specs.

    Alienware 17

    • Pros: Great specs, UHD screen, excellent processor
    • Cons: Heavy, bulky, expensive.

    Dell G3 17

    • Pros: Light, brand new model, same excellent processor as above
    • Cons: 4GBx2 RAM instead of 8GBx2, screen only FHD, battery 56Wh versus 99Wh for the Alienware, would prefer 512GB SSD and no HDD at all.

    Inspiron 17 7773

I have 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD in my current machine so I could transfer them over but I don't really want to start tinkering, hence the need to get the amounts right when I order.

That's my research so far. I'm pretty brand loyal but am interested to see if there are similar quality options from other manufacturers. Any and all help is appreciated.

I'm also interested in VR but I'm inclined to think the space still needs to matures a bit more. Is this the case?

    Economics major 4-5yr laptop

    Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:27 AM PDT

Hello r/suggestalaptop! I will be going into Uni this fall as an economics major. I need a new laptop. Currently, I have an XFCE tower and an iPad Pro 10.5". I will need something both portable and powerful. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.. Battery life needs to be a complete day, because lugging around a charging cable is so 90s.

How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is important: less than 2.1kg would be ideal

Which OS do you require? Ideally, it would be macOS or any flavor of Linux.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. My preferred screen size would be more than 14", so 14-15".

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I edit photos in Adobe Lightroom. I use VIM for word processing. I browse the web. That's pretty much it. However, I love to have lots of windows open at once.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd love something that will last 4-5 years, and a good keyboard is essential.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My budget is anywhere under $4k. The screen is also important, because I need to fit a lot of windows, however small.

    Thank you all in advance!

Trying to decide between i7 and i5 processor

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 04:43 PM PDT

So I'm pretty committed to buying the xps 13 as it fit all my needs as a school/work laptop. I found one for sale on eBay that contains an i7-7Y75 processor with 16 GB ram, and one on Dell's website that contains an i5-7200U and 8 GB ram. Comparing the two processors on Cpubenchmark.net, it seems like the i5 is faster. Does the 16GB ram on the i7 laptop make it a better buy?

Laptop for school and light gaming

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 11:56 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Preferably below $500. USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for the money.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Relatively important, as I plan to carry it for most of the day. I'd prefer something on the smaller side.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 1080p is preferable, but I'd be okay with anything else.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Planning on possibly doing some very light 3D Modeling with Maya, but I mainly use my desktop for that.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I plan on playing mainly Dwarf Fortress and other strategy games. For DF I'd prefer a frame rate of over 100, but all that requires is a decent CPU.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality is very important to me!

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I know what I've listed is a bit of a long shot considering my budget, but I'd be willing to go a bit over if something really good pops up. All help is greatly appreciated!

something powerful, battery life no big deal always around outlet, will be programming on it heavy so it should be able to handle multiple programs, tabs etc. without freezing or lagging.

Edit: found this on Amazon, would this do the job?

    Macbook air vs Macbook Pro

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 07:55 PM PDT

Hello everyone, I'm an incoming college student and I'm currently deciding between these two computers (13 inch models for both). I am a science major but I'm not in computer science nor anything engineering-related so I don't anticipate doing anything overly complex on either of them.

Currently it's the price that has me on the fence. My parents gave me a $1500 budget and anything I don't use I get to keep. Similarly if I exceed the $1500 then the remaining difference is out of my pocket.

The macbook air (as per my university's bookstore) costs $849 for the 128 GB option and $1,049 for the 256 GB.

The macbook pro (touch bar and touch id) costs $1,699 for the 256 GB option and $1,899 for the 512 GB.

Does anyone have any input? Besides schoolwork I like to do a little light gaming. I'm not quite sure which is the best option. In addition I'm not sure which would be the best storage option for me so if I could get some suggestions/advice in that area that would be appreciated. I am also willing to provide more information if needed. Thanks!

CS major looking for a gaming/programming/3dmodeling/3dprinting laptop

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 11:32 PM PDT

Thanks in advance to whoever assists me in finding a laptop to suit my needs. I appreciate the help. I've been looking for a laptop for a few weeks now and haven't been decisive enough to pull the trigger yet.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Looking to purchase in the US ideally from Amazon (so I can use my Amazon card and Amazon prime free shipping) or another online retailer if the deal is good enough. Total budget is around $1000 but can possibly go up to $1200 if it drastically increases performance, build quality, or useability.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I cannot stand 2 in 1 and will never use it. Battery life is important but I care about specs far more. Ideally a i7 processor, Nvidia graphics, decent amount of ram, as much storage as possible (hopefully SSD), and a half decent (preferably IPS) screen.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Current laptop is an ASUS Zenbook with a 13" display and light weight. I've loved the thin and visually appealing laptop but it feels too tiny and I don't mind carrying something heavier and thicker if it has specs to show for it. The Zenbook has the dreaded hinge breaks, I hope to 3dprint new hinges after I buy a new laptop.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows for many of the programs I need and use, may dual boot Linux.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Ideally 17" because I wanted something bigger, but I'd be fine with anything 15.6" or larger.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Currently use Autodesk inventor, Autodesk fusion 360, Simplify3D, and hope to play fortnite, some newer gen titles, and Black Ops 4 when it comes out.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Many newer gen titles, Skyrim (w/mods), fortnite, CSGO, Black Ops 4 when it comes out, and other titles releasing within the next year, etc... Ideally medium to high settings, with 60 fps preffered.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Don't want a touchscreen, finger print reader, or optical drive. Do want good build quality (aluminum/brushed metal is a plus), decent keyboard/tracker (I like backlite keys but don't need them and if the tracker is shit that's fine I'll mostly use a mouse), I would like an SD card reader built in, USB-C, USB3 is very useful to me, RJ45 port is very useful to me, and I would like an HDMI port and thuder port if applicable.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Nothing specific, open to many ideas about what to get. I'm somewhat loyal to ASUS because I've had good experiences with their products, but very open to HP, Dell, MSI, etc.. if the build quality, reviews, and specs back them up. I'd prefer it not look like one of the gawdy gaming laptopa with weird unneeded angles and extra RGB lights.

All the laptops are overpriced in my country, help me to find something decent up to 950€.

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 07:46 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Up to 950€ max. I live in Eastern Europe, Lithuania, where the prices are 200-300€ higher than what you would find somewhere in the west.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I will be using laptop daily for my software engineering studies, so I need my laptop to be light weight and to have a good battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is what matters, I am traveling around the city with buses and will carry my laptop in my backpack, so I need it to be light. Thinness does not really matter.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I have never had a laptop before and been using stationary computer my whole life, so I am used to big screens. But I understand that big screens and weight does not match up that well.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Mainly will be used for bunch of different IDEs, but would also be nice if it could let me do some light gaming like League of Legends and Civilization V.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mentioned above. League of legends and Civilization V are my top priorities. 60+ fps preferred.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not really, since I never owned a laptop before.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. If it is not a bother for you, there is this price checking site that we use in our country. Just type the model at the top and it will list you the prices for the product.

Looking for suggestions for a laptop/tablet hybrid that can handle some light gaming (like civ 5 and shogun 2). Similar laptops like the lenovo yoga 720 and 730

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 11:30 PM PDT

I'm looking to replace my 17' msi ge70 for a laptop I can write notes on for school. Seeing how much these hybrids cost, I'm thinking I can buy a gaming laptop instead but I don't game that much anymore. Just looking for laptops like the lenovo yoga 720 and 730

    College laptop

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 11:24 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $800 USD
      • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I would like 2 in 1, or at least touch screen. I need 5+ hour battery life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you? just needs to fit in a backpack, so not at all.
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows
      • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
      • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. at most I'm gonna run games like undertale, so nothing major.
      • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? undertale, maybe some other games like that where fps doesn't matter much.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would like touch screen, a back lit keyboard would be nice too, I need something that is well built too, an optical drive would be a lovely touch, but I can also easily just buy an external one so it isnt nessecary. I watch a decent amount of movies and TV so a fairly good display and speakers would be greatly appreciated too.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have always had Dell computers so that is what I'm most comfortable with and my parent can get me a discount for a Dell, but if there is something other than Dell that fits this better please feel free to suggest it.

Need Assistance finding a laptop for college

    Posted: 27 Jul 2018 10:50 PM PDT

    * **Total budget and country of purchase:** $1300 USD * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.** A 2 in 1 is unnecessary for me I believe, however I do need good battery life as I will be using it all day for classes. * **How important is weight and thinness to you?** I don't really mind if it's too heavy or thick or thin. * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.** I don't have a preference. I've never used anything but Windows, however most of my tech (besides a laptop) has always been Apple (IPhone, Watch, IPods). I've also heard Mac is easy to catch on with. * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I really won't be doing much other than notes, papers, things needed for my classes mostly. I'm not a gamer or editor of the sort. * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** -I need a reliable quality. Touchscreen and touchpad are really unneeded for me. * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I will be a nursing student and may require a laptop to last 4-6 years. My boss is also a nurse and is currently getting her masters, she recommended the MacBook Pro for me as she has had the same MBP since 2008 and says it's still in great condition. I'm leaning more towards Mac (plus the Apple Store student discount is a pretty decent one), however, I do need some guidance! Any suggestion is helpful! Thanks in advance!
