Our internet is incredibly slow. Roommate set up "his own," router which has 2 different wifi signals. Posted: 27 Jul 2018 06:38 PM PDT We rent a house in which the wifi is included in the rent. I recently moved in and learned the internet is extremely slow. We live in a somewhat rural area, so expectations aren't high, but this is intolerable. Today I discovered that one of my roommates bought his own router. This router is linked to our ancient router/modem which is provided by the company. It shows up under 2 different signals, which he did not share the password to. I ended up finding the password on the bottom of the router and tested both against our "shared," signal. The results were all pretty much the same.. So what is the point? I was suspicious that he was somehow siphoning internet away for himself. In reality, I'm not sure his additional router is doing anything at all. I'm thinking the problem has more to do with our old router/modem.. Should I call the provider and ask for one? Internet Speed Test: PING ms 815 DOWNLOAD Mbps 1.20 UPLOAD Mbps 0.26 TL;DR - How do I improve our internet speeds? Is my roommates "private," router a problem? Our provider claims we should be getting at least 6Mbps. submitted by /u/LeGypsy [link] [comments] |
Possible attempt to hack my router or something. Posted: 28 Jul 2018 03:09 AM PDT So I've been having slow internet for the past 3 days, but I'm not sure if what I'm about to explain is the reason for that. Someone has been watching way too much Mr.Robot and has decided to mess with my router, why ? no idea.I randomly decided to check my "Wireless Clients" List and saw an "Honor_6X", we don't have an Huawei Honor smartphone so I knew someone was up to something. I rebooted the router and changed the wifi password (Yes, it's WPA2) I filtered the person's MAC Address, didn't work. The person came back unexpectedly. So I then changed the Router's Admin Password and It got him off for a while.I enabled and checked my router log, I got some fishy stuff going on, which I think is him/her trying to crack the password or something. Then the person disappeared for a day and I saw nothing from the log.Today I got up and saw the same thing happening, so I changed the password. My questions are:How did he get the wifi password ?Isn't WPA2 hard to crack ?Why is MAC filtering not working ? Here's some of the BS from the log. For some reason some of it is 2012 xD.D-Link Router BTW. P.S: I know MAC filtering is useless xD 2012-05-23 00:00:46 [5] syslog: Accessor:[CPE] Method:[AUTH] Para:[] Result:[9007] Not found session 29a22241, user login check failed 2012-05-23 00:00:48 [5] Have got a new laptop and it comes with windows 10 home version. I think it lags a lot and I want to downgrade it to windows 7. Have some few questions please help. Posted: 28 Jul 2018 03:40 AM PDT Specification: Company: Dell Model: Inspiron 5567 Cpu: Intel i5-7200U RAM: 8GB GPU: AMD Radeon R7 M445 2gb Am I doing the right thing by downgrading to 7 from 10? Is there any legal way to do so as I want to have windows 7 professional version or do I have to download it from getintopc or any other as you think suitable? This laptop comes with office installed. Is it possible to move it to the windows 7 later? In case I download windows7 illegally(from getintopc) can I move this version of office(pre-installed and legal) to the illegal version of windows? I have heard that given GPU is not so good with games, Is there any way to overcome it? And will downgrading to windows7 affect it in any way? Thanks a lot for your help. submitted by /u/Wickedmittal [link] [comments] |

USB ports not working Posted: 28 Jul 2018 03:19 AM PDT Hey folks, so I'm having an issue with my USB ports. All of my USB ports are dead except one. I had this issue once before when I first installed my MoBo and it was fixed by properly installing the Intel Management engine interface. Sadly this fix didn't work this time. The PC was properly working just a few days ago and now when I fired it up nothing is working. I also have a „USB-xHCI-compatible Hostcontroller" under the „USB-Controller" section in device manager that shows an orange triangle and says it couldn't be startet. Also the PC is not shutting down or restarting when windows tells it to. What I tried: - resetting bios - clearing cmos - reinstalling chipset drivers - reinstalling management engine interface - reinstalling windows with a backup cd - completely cutting the pc away from power I really need help here and I'm pretty lost by now. Any way to recover a deleted file? Posted: 28 Jul 2018 03:10 AM PDT I fucked up omega hard today, accidentally deleted a file and accidentally emptied the recycle bin with the file in it (didn't check the name before deleting). The file you cannot get off the internet anymore, every download link is broken. It's not popular so no chance there remains on the internet. While it doesn't really affect me that much, call it a collector item, I want to know if there is a way to recover it. submitted by /u/direnjie [link] [comments] |
SSD not initializing/not detected Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:50 AM PDT I was trying to install a new Samsung 840 pro 500gb SSD but it will not initialize. I already have another 840 pro 500gb SSD installed that works perfectly fine, but when I try to install this new one, my PC takes forever to boot then will not initialize the drive. When trying to initialize in device management, it says "the specified disk is not convertible because the size is less than the minimum size for gpt disks" also does not initialize in MBR. When I rescan disks the disk completely disappears from disk management and diskpart. Any tips on how to get it working? How to restrict a program from writing to the registry? Posted: 28 Jul 2018 03:02 AM PDT My problem is that a program when it's launched, writes/modifies values in loads of registry entries even if the user under which the program is running has no administrative priviliges and is also restricted from using registry editing tools such as the regedit.exe(this was done with the help of Local Group Policy Editor a.k.a gpedit.msc). There's an informative answer to a similar question to mine from this source but when attempting to reproduce the suggestion, the program still got through the restrictions and was able to write to the registry. In other words, executing the command "psexec -l -i Program_in_question.exe" didn't solve my issue. What are other ways of restricting a program from writing to the registry, besides what I've already mentioned? submitted by /u/reddick420 [link] [comments] |
Installed new CPU, ram and mobo, and now pc won’t do anything past launching. Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:49 AM PDT So I had issues with my pc a while back and I asked on r/techsupport for opinions, and ended up buying a new motherboard, cpu and ram. I finally got around to installing them today, and now whenever I launch my pc the resolution is extremely low and I can't move my mouse or use my keyboard, and after a min or 2 I get an error message saying graphics card unsupported. The mouse and keyboard both work fine in the bios, I've tried switching up the connectors and setting the bios to default to the onboard chipset but it made no difference. I'm running out of ideas, so I'd appreciate any insight on this matter. Sorry for any spelling or grammatical errors, it's now 4:47am and I haven't gone to bed yet cause I've been dealing with this shit , so I'm practically falling asleep in between typing each sentence. submitted by /u/PianoOwl [link] [comments] |
Dual monitor problem - One of the monitors seems "dominant"? Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:45 AM PDT I have 2 monitors that used to work perfectly fine before. However all of a sudden only one of the monitors seems to be able to work at the same time. It's weird since they both work individually but only the left monitor works when they're both on??? Not sure if this is useful but when the right one is on and working and I turn the left monitor on the right one stops sending and receiving signals + the sound of a device connecting and disconnecting occurs about 3 times. Any idea what the problem might be? submitted by /u/TeaTeaMe [link] [comments] |

Looking to upgrade my laptop, need help Posted: 28 Jul 2018 12:31 AM PDT Hi all, So I have $200 to spend and I want to upgrade my laptop. It's an ASUS ROG G750JM gaming laptop from 2014. My goals here are to: - improve multi tasking performance (I've noticed Sony Vegas and Photoshop slow down a bit if I run both) - improve boot times Now, which SSD should I get, and what ram sticks would be compatible? Maybe 8gb more ram, or even 4gb if that would be enough. Is it a good idea to make the SSD my boot drive, and put all programs on it? I wouldn't put games on it - not enough space on the SSD, plus games are fast enough for me. One more thing, is it possible to transfer my OS and programs to the SSD without losing anything? Or do I have to factory reset? submitted by /u/sysrqReddit [link] [comments] |

Pc not posting or giving beep codes after week of use Posted: 28 Jul 2018 02:24 AM PDT After almost a week of use my cousin's pc would not boot after a BSOD. It only booted for a short while, when we pulled out the CMOS battery for 30 minutes, until the same BSOD happened and we were back to square one. Then we switched out his RAM and PSU for mine but to no avail so we thought it was a motherboard issue so he ordered a new one, installed it and everything seemed fine. Now after another week of use the same thing happened and we just don't know how to proceed with this. Any ideas what the problem could be? submitted by /u/Bearylicious [link] [comments] |

cannot connect to wired ethernet Posted: 27 Jul 2018 08:23 PM PDT hey everyone, thanks for reading. relevant specs: Ryzen r5 1600x MSI B350 PC Mate Motherboard My internet, which is wired directly from my modem to my pc, just stopped working today. The 'Network Connections' in Windows 10 states "Ethernet: Unidentified network". I tried the Windows 10 diagnostic tool, it did nothing but reset the Realtek PCIe network device. I popped a USB Wifi adapter in to update that realtek device from the MSI website. That did nothing. Here's my dxdiag if that helps. I reset the modem and router, tried multiple ethernet cables; the LED on my on-board LAN is just solid orange. Ethernet Status states no IPv4 nor IPv6 network access, media state is enabled, and activity is sending packets (about 1-2 every second) while receiving 0. Any leads on a solution is greatly appreciated, thanks! edit: LAN is enabled in BIOS submitted by /u/shovelle [link] [comments] |
I believe that I got infected with a bitcoin miner Posted: 28 Jul 2018 02:02 AM PDT Hey guys, I need help to fix this issue that is bugging me :( Here is the summary of what happened: One day, I noticed that my GPU fans were running at max speed even though the PC was at idle and no GPU intensive program/game was running. But as soon as I move the mouse to find what happened, the GPU fans immediately slow down to normal speed. I kept CAM application open with the GPU graphs displayed to troubleshoot the issue. Kept the PC Idleing for a bit, then the GPU fans started to boost up again. Then I saw the graph in the application showing that GPU usage was 100% then it dropped to almost 0% as soon as I moved the mouse After that, I suspect that there is some sort of bitcoin miner that is running on my machine. I decided to download Malware bytes to -hopefully- fix the issue. Malwarebytes did find this RiskWare.BitCoinMiner, C:\USERS\**\APPDATA\ROAMING\APPCONTAINER\STORAGE\microsoft.microsoftedge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\CHILDREN\001\INTERNET SETTINGS\cuda_djezo.dll, Quarantined, [922], [515270],1.0.5949 After quarantine the GPU usage was normal even when idle. BUT now whenever I don't move the mouse for like 10-15 mins. I get these two annoying errors My guess would be that something is still trying to run the miner whenever the PC is idle, but it can't because Malwarebytes deleted it? Now I'm confused and not sure on what is my next move on the situation. I Sincerely don't want to format my PC. submitted by /u/xSoLD3Rv [link] [comments] |

Is it possible to make one's own 2G/3G mobile network? Posted: 28 Jul 2018 03:55 AM PDT Title. I was wondering if it's possible to make a DIY 2G/3G network (obviously of very limited range), similar to how Wi-Fi hotspots work? I'm particularly interested in getting a DIY 2G network, so I can access the internet on some old feature phones. submitted by /u/AnnualDegree99 [link] [comments] |
Secondary hard drive not showing up anywhere. Posted: 28 Jul 2018 03:53 AM PDT Hey guys, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I installed a new GPU in my PC and figured I might as well do a fresh Windows install. I had a 1TB drive that I used for storage only, and before reinstalling the Windows I took it out of my PC. I've then reinstalled Windows to my SSD, got everything working with the GPU and left the drive for the very end. However, it isn't showing up in Device Manager, in Disk Management, nowhere. It spins up once the computer starts but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Could anyone offer a solution? submitted by /u/puga1505 [link] [comments] |
