This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

PC beeping once every minute, on or off

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 05:15 AM PDT

    UPDATE

**My wife put an old smoke detector, in the box under a pile of crap, in the office without telling me. The battery was low. Computer is fine.**

    /facepalm

Hey all, my first and current rig was built in March of 2017. Since yesterday, it's just beeping once every 60 seconds. Doesn't matter if it's on or off.

Everything, including BIOS, is updated to its latest drivers/software/etc. Before the beeping started I had not made any recent software or driver changes, and I have not updated the hardware at all.

Plz help, trying to build a gaming computer

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 12:30 PM PDT

So this is my first (and probably worst attempt) at building a pc and I have no clue as to what is good except graphics cards and the processer. I'm trying to build a pc for gaming and I dont need anything fancy or fancy colors just something that works real well. Id love suggestions and help with anything that doesnt seem good or what not. Also my budget is $1000 even though thats way more than I wanted to spend I realize thats probably a decent amount if not a little over that.

Potential Ryzen build - would love some feeback

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 01:06 PM PDT

    Potential build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6RL8ZR

    Hey guys!

This is not my first build. It's not even my seventh or eighth build but it has been quite a while since I've done any upgrades that building a new rig is my best option. And it never hurts to get an extra set of eyes! This will be my first foray into the Ryzen scene (you guys have made me a believer) and I very much appreciate any feedback on what is/isn't working, making it quieter, case size, monitor recommendations, etc.

I'm going to use this for gaming and video editing. My day job is video editor and I'd like to finally rock a 1440p monitor at 144Hz.

Again, thank you for taking your time to check out the build and feel free to let the recommendations fly! It'll be about one or two months before I can amass the funds for this but considering I haven't touched my PC in almost six years, I think it'll be worth the investment.

Triple Monitor Setup - Choosing The Right Monitor

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 08:06 AM PDT

    Hello guys,

I have finished building my PC and now i am looking to upgrade my monitor. I will be using 3 monitors, the main middle monitor going to be used for gaming FPS, MOBA and etc so basically any game that comes to mind. I have looked at many monitors and i dont know which one to choose. my current choice is the Asus VG248QE 24" 144Hz (single) and the Asus VG245H 24" 75Hz (duo, left and right). Let me know if what i chose is the right choice or not.

If not, then this is what i am looking for in a monitor.

    • I need it to be 144hz or up
    • 1MS respond time
    • Using GTX 1080Ti OC edition by Asus, So i will need reasonable resolutions for my GPU to run at a consistent 144FPS or higher
    • Mounting capabilities
    • Not necessary but G-Sync rather than FreeSync
    • ALL three to be identical in looks
    • 24" screen

Thank you guys for your help.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I'm totally new to this. I've been looking at so many parts now that my brain is fried - would be great if someone could tell me if I've made any obviously stupid choices or if I'm missing out on some opportunities to either lower cost or easily improve performance.

I might end up going up to 32gb RAM eventually (For using Blender & Unity at the same time, as well as opening 100 Chrome tabs simultaneously) - should I get one 16G stick for now, or sitck w 2x8 and cross that bridge when I burn it down?

Also, I just picked a monitor that seemed good for a low price. Don't know a ton other than I want IPS and at least 1080p. Any other suggestions for making that puppy woof?

    Thanks, y'all.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I recently built my first (budget) PC and have connected my HDMI cable from my GPU to my input channel switcher. The channel switcher also has my xbox connected to it via HDMI. When my PC is off and my xbox is on my channel switcher receives power from the console as it should but somehow send power to my PC via its HDMI cable. This causes my CPU Fan to spin even though my pc is shutdown.

My only worry is since power is being sent from my HDMI to my GPU and then somehow to my CPU fan causing it to spin would by motherboard or GPU or any other component be harmfully affected in the short/long term?

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Disconnecting my hdmi from my input channel switcher solves the issue but might there be another way which allows me to have my HDMI connected to my channel switcher?

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

    Need help with compatibility issues

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 03:29 PM PDT

I'm going to order my first PC soon, but I'm a bit of a noob at this stuff.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/kXvg3b

This is the build I'm going for. But the thing is, it looks like the BIOS will need to be upgraded on the motherboard to be compatible with the CPU.

But, someone told me that the newer stock of X370's should have the upgraded BIOS already.

Can someone help and explain to me what's the best thing to do? Like do I just switch up the entire motherboard, or what?

    Ordering off Mindfactory.de (for Europeans)

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 05:16 AM PDT

As many of you know mindfactory shut off shipping abroad a year or so ago.

There is still a way to order components to other countries through mailbox.de.

My question is how does the warranty work in that way? Do they accept it if you send it from lets say Slovenia?

Replacing triple monitor setup, need suggestions for 27" 144hz

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 04:05 AM PDT

    Hi,

I've been considering doing this for a while now, and my R9 290x dying a few months back finally started me down the path. Replaced it with a 1070, and also got VESA mounts recently, so now I'd like to replace all three displays. Currently I have a 24" 16:10 as the main display and a 22" and a 23" on either side.

I was thinking of going 27" for all three displays, ideally I'd like to have three similar models, one with 144hz for the main and two 60hz's for the sides. Not really interested in 4K and the 1070 would struggle anyway.

I'm in The Netherlands and I'd like this to fit into somewhere around 1.000€.

    Thanks ahead!

    CPU Cooler for i7 8700k

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 10:59 AM PDT

Hi guys! Planning to get an i7 8700K CPU and overclock it but dont know what cooler to choose. I think i gonna build AIR cooling only since it is my first build. I have checked those but don't know what to choose:

    Noctua NH-D15 https://pcpartpicker.com/product/4vzv6h/noctua-cpu-cooler-nhd15

    Dark Pro Rock 3 https://pcpartpicker.com/product/9bFPxr/be-quiet-cpu-cooler-bk019

Gammaxx GT (this is cool but seems it has low cfm and high loudness) https://pcpartpicker.com/product/WDPzK8/deepcool-gammaxx-gt-295-cfm-cpu-cooler-gammaxx-gt

What would you pick? Any other personal air cooling reccomendations? I would appreciate if it is quite quiet.

Did I just fry my mainboard?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2018 07:39 AM PDT

So first of I got an ASRock H97 Anniversary Mainboard. And now my PC won't start anymore. Not even trying to boot. Nada. Nothing.

Storytime: I wanted to use a third PCIe slot for a bluetooth module but when booting I was told to connect power to pcie_pwr1 . Can't be that hard I thought, scrambling through my cable drawer. The only thing I found was this: https://i.imgur.com/wYpl9Tu.jpg

Could work, but was way too short. So I went on ebay and searched for a molex female to male cable or a 6pin to molex male cable. Couldn't find one that was shipping from germany so I bought these to: https://i.imgur.com/y5sveVr.jpg On the right side you can see a molex female to female adapter.

They arrived today and I thought great let's get this done, I put everything together: https://i.imgur.com/UQ3Dd2q.jpg Now we got Power supply to a 6pin to Molex male to Molex female to Molex female to Molex male to Molex male to PCIe_pwr1. Perfect right?

Plugged everything in and the only thing I hear is a short. I remove everything and the PC won't even make a noise anymore...

I guess my error was to use the adapter to connect the cables? While doing so I switched the phase(?): https://i.imgur.com/iEy0H3w.jpg and fried my mainboard? Or possibly even more?

Is there anything I can do to fix it, or do I have to get a new one?

    Thanks in advance. 🙏🏼

Edit: And if I did, what did I do wrong?
