    Simple Questions - June 28, 2018

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

I'm going to commit war crimes against the inventor of windows basic drivers

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 05:34 AM PDT

It is a nightmare. I used the DDU crap. Uninstalled the drivers, reinstalled, rinse repeat. Yet it always says "code 43" and "windows failed to load the drivers." Now steam refuses to not crash after five minutes, winRAR does the same, and everything is a nightmare. Should I just do a fresh install of windows? Edit: hell has been returned in a hand basket. Everything is fine

EDIT: EVERYTHING IS FIXED Edit: I fixed it by shutting it off and letting it chill. Like hitting the button on the PSU. I discovered that the lagging only happens after I open GMod. Garry's mod is the antichrist of my drivers

Things To Look Out For When Building A PC

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:16 AM PDT

Or what did you wish you had known when building your first PC?

All my parts are ordered and arrive on Monday, I'm watching videos and guides trying to learn as much as possible. It's super exciting stuff but also kind of scary. Images of turning on my PC and it blowing up are in my head.

So any tips or pointers? I've also gone with a dark rock pro 4 which seems intimidating to install.

Edit: Thankyou so much! Did not expect these many replies and has given me a lot of insight and starting to feel really prepared, really great comments to read. Will make sure to update when it's built, assuming I didn't burn my house down

Is there any interest in PC flipping tutorials?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 01:53 PM PDT

For the past year or so I've been scratching my PC building itch by buying used parts/systems and reselling for a profit and ended up making more money than I have at any typical young person job.

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a YouTube channel dedicated to teaching other enthusiasts ways to build and play with all sorts of different hardware without spending any money

I was thinking of just going over what to look for in different ads, places to get obscure or very old parts, me messing around with my weird builds and seeing how they perform on today's software/games, how to quickly sell systems for good money.

I'm not huge into video editing and am not looking at all to monetize the channel so they'd be much more informational and less sensational/entertaining than other similar videos I've seen.

Just curious if anyone would be interested in something like this.

How Much should I spend on a Gaming PC?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 04:10 AM PDT

I've never had a gaming PC before and have recently been looking in to purchasing one. I mainly play RPG games(Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, etc) with perhaps some Fortnite on the side and I want the game to run smoothly on high fps and high graphics. What is the minimum amount I would have to spend? I'm a student so my max budget is like £700-800/$900-1000 but if possible I would like to go below that and save some money as it all helps when you're at University. If you could possibly show me some sort of builds that'd be awesome. As for storage wise, from what I know you want to put all your good games on a SSD so they run better. I think I could get away with a 125mb, and as for just general storage,1tb would be great.

Thanks a lot for any help, I really appreciate it!

EDIT: My bad I completely forgot to mention I already have a monitor: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0158L13M4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Anyone here NOT want rgb components?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 04:03 PM PDT

It seems like so many folks are centering their builds around rgb and flashy aesthetics. I only want rgb(or plain lighting) in my kb for practical purposes. Otherwise I just want an unassuming looking high performance PC. I actually find it cool if the thing looks totally plain but is a total beast. Anyone else?

Buzzing sound from earphones on new PC

What could be causing this? Could I have installed an audio connection slightly incorrectly?

Do NOT use ASUS AI Suite with ASUS B350-F Motherboards!

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 07:29 AM PDT

ASUS Ai Suite 3 (I've tried every version) will crash this mobo (No matter the hardware combined with it) after a random amount of time.

I have purchased 2 of these boards tracking this issue and have an entire other computer now due to troubleshooting.

The only solution is to exit the application and leave it off (all your fans profiles and setting still take effect)

Mobo is great other than this issue that has plagued me for months and hours upon hours of troubleshooting. I'm posting this to hopefully save someone the same fate as I.

    RANT Below:

This issue happens on both boards with every hardware config I've done on multiple wipes and re formats with clean installs of Windows. I have literally switched out EVERY component in this build from the literal computer case to the CPU/RAM/SSD/HHD/PSU/GPU/any cables, fans, standoffs, and the goddamn screws. I'm not kidding when I say I have swapped out EVERY component around this mobo tracking the issue and have spent so much wasted money trying to determine a faulty piece of hardware only to find it was this buggy ass software.

    Seriously fuck this software.

AI suite 3 software will crash the computer to a black screen with no error in windows event viewer and required a full power cycle (pulling the psu power cable out and draining the caps on the mobo) to reboot. The time to trigger it is entirely random it seems and can't be recreated on command.

All the functions of this application can be tuned and fiddled with in the BIOS so it's not a big deal and you can also toy with the setting in the program before it crashes and then exit it and be free of crashing.

    My rig for reference:

    Case - Fractal Design Meshify C / NZXT s210

    PSU - Seasonic X-Series 850w (6months old) / Seasonic 520w bronze (4~ years old)

    Mobo - Asus B350-f x 2

CPU - 1600x 4.0ghz 1.375v currently (fully stableand tested without OC during troubleshooting) / Stock 1600

    CPU Cooler - Cryorig H7 / Hyper TX3

    Ram - G skill. Ripjaws 2400 DDR4 / Corsair vengeance DDR4 3000

    GPU - EVGA GTX 1080 / ASUS GTX 660 / ASUS GTX 970

    SSD - Samsung 840 EVO 128 GB / Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB

    HHD - WD 1tb 7200 rpm / Seagate 2 tb

OS - Win 10 Home/Pro/single language fully updated and tested for crashing on all versions.

TL:DR DON'T USE AI SUITE. IT WILL CRASH YOUR COMPUTER EVENTUALLY.

    Can I use a cheap b360 board for a non-k 8700?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 01:51 AM PDT

I don't plan to do any overclocking, though I guess that goes without saying for a non-k chip.

My RAM modules are only 2666 to begin with and I don't need a lot of extra features.

I haven't built a PC in like...5-6 years though, and last time it was just an i5, so I'm a little out of my element here. Do I need to worry about VRM temps with a non-k chip? Things like that?

    Upgrade CPU or GPU

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 02:04 PM PDT

Hi, I am looking to upgrade my computer

    I currently have an FX-8350 @ 4.8Ghz, 16gb Ram, and a Radeon R9 390 with 8GB DDR5 of VRAM. My primary monitor is 1440p, and i run it between 75-96hz.

I would either like to a 1080TI, or a Ryzen 2700x. Upgrading to a 2700x will require a new motherboard and 16gb of DDR4 RAM which I have factored in the cost. Sadly doing both is a little more than I would like to spend right now. In about 6 months I will upgrade the component I do not upgrade now.

Even though I use the computer for things other than gaming, that is the only area where I am currently looking for a performance boost. I plan on adding whatever component I get to my custom watercooling loop, and overclocking it.

Which component would you recommend I upgrade first?

Bye Mac, here's my first PC workstation

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 08:50 PM PDT

Open box, plug in and turn on. That's a little different from a custom built PC. This will be a workstation for primarily Cinema 4D and After Effects. I will do GPU rendering with Octane and Redshift. I won't play any games on it. I've researched other similar workstations and that has geared me towards this build. Cinema 4D is single threaded so I'm going with Intel over AMD for clock speed. The 8700K is faster, but I want to add 3GPUs and the possibility to add up to 128GB of ram. The 7820x hits a sweet spot of speed and cores. Although it only has 28pci lanes, it seems to matter very little in actual performance hit. 3 cards will run (8,8,8). It says two cards in the PCPartpicker link, but I'm adding 3.

No matter how much research I make, doesn't change the fact that I'm a complete noob. I could have missed tho most obvious thing, so any input is greatly appreciated. My PSU is probably way overkill for example. So, thank you for any thoughts.

UPS for Desktop gaming PC advice

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 04:12 PM PDT

I currently have a CyberPower CP685AVRG AVR UPS for this purpose, but it has failed me multiple times, most recently last night - I get a surge/brownout type thing (power lost for less than a second typically) and even though my PC is connected to this UPS (and the correct "battery" side of the UPS), it restarts. Yet, I can yank the UPS cord straight out of the wall, and the PC is fine - no interruption. Battery power works fine.

I've read about certain power supplies requiring certain things out of UPS's, but this is kind of out of my realm of understanding.

My PC power supply is an EVGA 650 GQ.

I've been looking at this other CyberPower CP1000PFCLCD PFC Sinewave UPS, mostly for this "PFC Sinewave" business. But I don't really understand if it will help or not. It's a difficult thing to test because these power episodes I get obviously aren't predictable.

Hoping someone here might have more knowledge in this space or have recommendations for a UPS that might be more reliable for me. Thank you.

    Ryzen RAM Overclocking Asus B350-F

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 03:38 PM PDT

So I've recently finished building my new computer and everything works good, besides my RAM, which is Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB, 3000mhz CAS 15. In the BIOS of my mobo, I set the DOCP to 3000, but the DRAM frequency stayed at 2133.

I did run memtest86 multiple times with no errors, (I think at the 2133 frequency) and I want to try getting my RAM to its rated speed.

Searching around made it hard to find answers on how to go about doing that, people say, "just enable XMP, DOCP, do it manually, etc.", but I'm not sure what all that means. You guys seem like a helpful sort so I was wondering if anyone has any insight for me!

P.S. My BIOS version for the B350-F is 0902 if that matters, finding consensus on a stable BIOS version was even more difficult, so I'm not sure sure if I should upgrade to a newer version. Thanks for any and all help!

    New GTX 1080 not posting

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 03:19 PM PDT

Just received my new Asus ROG Strix 1080 A8G. The LEDs light up but there is no POST and no display.

I get one long and 3 short beeps from the BIOS (VGA fault). The motherboard also has a light indicating a VGA fault.

Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix B350-F GPU: Asus ROG Strix GTX 1080 A8G CPU: Ryzen 3 1200 RAM: 16GB G.SKILL 3600 PSU: SeaSonic 520GM

The system was working fine with my GTX 750 Ti (Gigabyte, low profile). If I boot to BIOS with the old card installed in the second PCI-E slot, it shows slot 1 as empty.

I've reseated the 1080 twice and tried two different 8-pin connectors from the PSU.

The card does look like the chipset heatsink and SATA ports might be interfering with it fully seating. I can't confirm this with the board inside the case and don't have time to take it all apart tonight.

Does anyone have experience of putting these two Strix parts together? I'll be a bit disappointed if they aren't actually compatible!

First build, 4k video editing Premiere Pro, AE, and other Adobe products

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 01:25 PM PDT

I am on the verge of pulling the trigger on ordering the below components and then attempting to build them into a PC that will all me to edit 4k videos, both DSLR and Drone, in PP with a good amount of FX applied and the use of AE. I believe the CPU, GPU, and RAM are all sufficient for my needs, but I want to make sure the motherboard, storage, and everything else looks correct to eyes more experienced than my own.

Do I also need to order case fans? I am certainly open to ordering a different case if the one below isn't a good fit. I care more about ease of assembly and functionality than aesthetics.

I am planning to run Windows and all my apps on the 250G M.2 SSD, having all my footage and project files on the 1TB M.2 SSD, and all older and other files on the Seagate.

    Thank you for the imput!

    First PC Build

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 01:19 PM PDT

It's my first time building a PC and I know basically nothing about building them at all. I will be mostly using it for gaming, but also game development (coding, modelling, animations, etc). My current PC is a literal piece of junk, so this will be a gigantic upgrade for me. I know that I can get away with 8GB RAM, but I don't mind the extra cost for the 16GB just to be safe. I'm not sure if I'm missing anything in my build, so any help you can give me on what might be missing or how to improve the build or cut costs would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!

    Is this overkill? [RAM]

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 08:17 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

For quite some time, It feels my computer has been struggling to deliver the performance I need. I bought a 860 Evo 250gb (which is on the way) which should help with the responsiveness, but that is not my question over here.

A lot of time, I notice myself running at 90%+ ram (2x4GB, 8GB Total).

I have a sweet deal for 32GB (4x8GB, 2400MHz, CL11, Hyper X Beast) for around 125€ (shipped). Plan would be to sell my 2x4 for around 40€ to offset the price to total 85€ for a 24GB Ram increase.

    My current Specs are:

    • Intel Core i5 3570 3.4GHz
    • MSI B75A-G43
    • 8GB Corsair Vengeance (2x4GB, 1600MHz, DDR3)
    • (Incoming) Samsung 860 EVO 250gb
    • MSI Twin Frozr R7950
    • Corsair TX550M PSU

I mostly do gaming (League, Runescape, Overwatch, CS:GO, Fortnite) and development (Unreal Engine 4, Visual Studio, Unity, IDE's).

I enjoy having my chrome open, while running multiple games (ex: doing afk stuff in runescape while playing other games) and sometimes development stuff.

I feel that 8GB is really hindering me as Chrome likes to suck like 2GB of ram and most games will suck around 1GB.

My question is, would buying 32GB ram of DDR3 for the price I said above, be a waste and should I get something like 8GB extra and start saving for a platform jump?

Is it too late to make this type of upgrades in DDR3 platform?

I didn't have any problem buying the SSD as I know I could later re-use it in a new build (and later on I could buy an nvme to put alongside it, but what I mean is that it's relatively future proof).

Thank you for your time reading this wall of text! Any opinion is appreciated!
