Is the HP Spectre x360 Worth It for Gaming?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 11:45 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a thin and light laptop for college and for gaming that won't break the bank. I've looked at many gaming laptops that have the 1050 or 1050 Ti on them that are under $1000, but most, if not all of them, lack a long battery life and aren't as portable as an ultrabook.

Now, I know that ultrabook and gaming, and long battery life isn't something that can be found for under $1000 (though the Asus Vivobook M580VD comes close with a 1050 2GB card for under $850). Then, I saw the HP Spectre x360, which kind of shocked me because it was amazing. Though it was a bit above my budget, it had a 4k display, it was a 2-in-1 (which I don't really need, but is good to have), and best of all AMD Vega M GL graphics, all for around $1,400. I really like the 4k display, the 13 hour battery life, as well as its thin and light form factor.

My question is that would this be worth it if I want to play graphically demanding games on it, such as The Witcher 3 and the upcoming Fallout 76, in 1080p? I've heard mixed facts about the Vega graphics. I remember seeing one site say it was between a 1050 and a 1060, but then others say that it's between a 1050 and 1050 Ti. Also, if I do get this laptop, how would running games at 1080p look on a 4k display? Would the graphics still look crisp? Thank you.

    LAPTOP SEARCH AND VRAM ISSUE

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:53 PM PDT

I have been looking for a gaming laptop for around $1000 that doesn't look like a gaming laptop. I found this Hp laptop and configured it with the 1060 option and 70Whr battery. My only concern is that the 1060 has only 3gb deddicated of ddr5 vram. Is this a valid concern or is 3gb enough vram for modern AAA games and some future games?

    How to clean laptop smudges?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:42 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I recently purchased t he HP Pavilion Power 15 and I'm honestly extremely pleased with this regarding how I got it for such a great price. However one slight issue which isn't a deal breaker but I feel like will become a issue later down the line is how easily it smudges from hand prints. As it's currently summer for me my hands get sweaty quite quickly so it's much easier for a hand print to be left behind. So I'd just like to ask is there an effective way to remove these smudges from my laptop.

    Thank you guys!

What do you all think about the Aero15W? Is it too good to be true?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:28 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I've been doing laptop research for a while now, I've been wanting to buy an all-round beast for college and gaming at the same time too.

I was originally sold by the Dell xps 15, but when I found out about the Aero 15W, it absolutely blew me away on how perfectly it matched everything I wanted in a laptop on paper (thin bezels, gtx 1060, 1080p 144hz, 8th gen processor, amazing battery etc)

Although, I'm worried that it's too good to be true

From what I've seen, the only disadvantages this laptop has is the sub-par keyboard and somewhat bad thermals at times.

What have you all seen / heard about this laptop? (and what is your source?)

If you have this laptop (or the Aero 15X) please do let me know your experience with it.

    Thank you!

    Laptop processor help

I've been looking at getting a laptop and one that has caught my eye is this. The only thing that I have been searching for that this specific model doesn't have is a i7-8750 processor. Any thoughts on the laptop or other computers that you think would perform better?

Alienware m17x R4 laptop keyboard problem

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 11:05 AM PDT

So yesterday my laptop white screened and I didn't know how to fix it. I looked up how to fix it but have never had to take my laptop apart. Since a lot of people don't have tutorials on this specific laptop, I looked up a screen replacement tutorial. Long story short, I took the whole thing apart before finding out I could have took the back off. I put it back together and fixed the white screen problem. But now, my keyboard does not work. Did I not push something back in correctly or did I accidentally snap a wire?

If I snapped something, would it be possible to replace the parts?

    Thanks for reading, really appreciated!

Moving from US to UK and bringing my Dell G7 15 with me. Can I use a UK cable plugged into my 180w power brick?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 07:34 AM PDT

I tried looking for an answer to this question already and didn't find anything yet. Sorry if this is well known

My plan is to buy a UK 3-pin to IEC C5(Mickey mouse shaped connector) to replace the American plug that came with the laptops power brick. Here is the cable I'm looking at.

The brick itself is rated to 240v and the replacement caple is rated to 250v 2.5 amps, so I think this should all work just fine, right?

    Suggestion for laptop

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 11:13 PM PDT

I am engineering major. Need a laptop for CAD, Matlab, and other similar ones. The only game i play is League. Hoping for one that is light, and long battery. Is there any suggestions?

Im currently looking into xps15 and envy (any kind). Some of my friends said they don't recommend both. Is there better ones?

Budget: Around 1.5 k is my max

Edit: 1.5k is made cuz of xps15 (250ish ssd) would strongly prefer a lower price one.

Dont need to be limited on xps 15 and envy. I hope i can compare with other models too.

How to reinstall OEM Windows on new SSD after old one failed?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2018 03:59 AM PDT

I've got an old Asus Zenbook UX31A. It came with Windows 8, which was upgraded to Windows 10. The original SSD failed last year, and I replaced it with a new one. However, I don't have a backup of the recovery partition from the original SSD. Now I'm wondering is there a way to re-install Windows 10 using the OEM license that came with tha laptop?

Side note: I haven't worried about this, because I used Linux. However now I would like to sell the laptop and would prefer to sell it with the OEM Windows intact, if possible.

Thanks in advance for your answers!

huawei matebook pro / lg gram / Dell xps 13

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 08:06 PM PDT

Canadian looking for a new laptop for school & light entertainment (gaming mostly older titles and fine with lower graphics - civ 5, dota 2 etc). Been looking at the above laptops quite heavily and would love advice from anyone who may have used them or simply know more about them

The Matebook X Pro looks almost too good to be true specs wise. Most reviews I've seen talk about great build quality and battery life. Somewhat concerned reading about people's issues with heating and some people's concerns on build quality. Not sure as a Canadian I would have any tech support if I ended up having problems with it? If I purchase through Microsoft Canada might I receive support?

The LG Gram interests me for its battery life and actually looks very durable in several tests I've seen online. Downside for me is getting it in Canada is real difficult and will require me to import from the us facing plenty of duties and whatnot. Similarly, unsure on how tech support I might receive for this device?

The xps13 battery life concerns me a ton as I've seen quite a few threads suggesting that reviews have overstated its life. As a student, battery life is important to me.

Any suggestions, thoughts, help greatly appreciated!

Really not pumped about the idea of dishing out a ton for a MacBook - although the quality reliability and technical support is nice. (Their new keyboard problems is also a big issue)

Programmer In Need of New Friend

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 06:43 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Great Britain. Below £700 would be great but is by no means a hard limit.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Couldn't care less about my laptop being able to do gymnastics but if it could run for a few hours without dying that would be great.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Got to carry it around so shouldn't be insanely heavy but overall aesthetics are more important than weight/thinness specifically.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Doesn't matter, I can install whatever I need (will probably be Ubuntu).

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" is ideal. 17" is nice to have but can be a bit bulky. Should be 1920x1080 though.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. IDEs such as IntelliJ are probably the most intensive things I would be running. On the other hand, I mainly program in Haskell these days so a text editor is all I use. Compiling is probably the most intensive part.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Hearthstone is probably as much gaming as I would do, rarely at that.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard shouldn't be uncomfortable, will usually be used with a mouse.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Mainly going to be used for programming. I've often thought that 16GB RAM would be more beneficial than 8GB and a dedicated GPU but so few laptops seem to have 16GB RAM. I don't usually work with huge data sets so it's not a massive issue.

The following specs seem reasonable to me:

CPU - i5 or above (8th gen would be nice). I'm suspicious of whether the powersaving "U" editions would suffer when compiling things.

GPU - doubt I need one. If it has one it's a bonus.

RAM - 16GB would be amazing but 8GB DDR4 should be fine.

Storage - I have a spare SSD so if the hard drive bay is accessible it doesn't need to come with one.

Architecture Student looking for laptop recommendations

    Posted: 27 Jun 2018 05:13 PM PDT

    Hi!

I'm starting grad school in the fall and my current computer (HP envy, 15 inch, i7 intel processor) is apparently unrepairable. The ac port isn't working and therefore won't keep a charge.

Looking to get new laptop. Absolutely under $1300. 15 inches, i7 processor or equivalent. Need it for programs like AutoCAD, ArcGIS, sketchup, adobe suites etc. Will be a demanding user according to best buy laptop buying guide.

Any recommendations? I was looking at the HP Probook 650 g3 quad core notebook, hp spectrex360, or another hp envy with AMD ryzen 7. I don't really understand all the jargon and want to leave that up to yall.

Let me know if you have anything! Thank you so much in advance
