Great CPU + good GPU vs good CPU + great GPU

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 08:18 AM PDT

I'm in doubt if I should go for a better CPU on a laptop or a better GPU.

    My purposes are:

    - Light gaming (not necessarily heavy stuff, but smooth performance would be nice): Dota 2, CSGO, Overwatch, etc...

    - Deep learning/Machine learning/AI stuffs (I do this professionally, but would like to do some hobby projects)

My budget is at MAX 1800, preferably a lot less.

The reason I'm asking this is because I'm in doubt between going for a newer or older Gigabyte Aero, which basically comes down to:

    i7-8750H + 1050 Ti vs i7700HQ + 1060 or 1070 Max-Q

I would think a GPU is more important for my purposes, but the benchmarks say that the i7-8750H is ~50% faster than the 7700HQ on most benchmarks, so I'm really tempted to get this one.

What do you guys think? Will the CPU difference be noticeable in most daily use scenarios?

Side question: do you think I should wait for the prices to drop with the 11xx Nvidia cards coming out?

    Need Help Choosing a Laptop

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:30 PM PDT

    Hello, here's the scenario:
My parents want to buy me a laptop for a graduation present, and have left it up to me which one I would like. I am looking for something to use for school work, as I will be starting college in a few months. I would like to be able to do some light gaming, but by no means does it need to be the main focus as I have a powerful desktop computer that I use every day. Here are some more considerations:
    -Price range of $1000-$1200
-512gb+ of storage preferred, but I could get by on 256 if the prices don't work out.
    -15'' Screen preferred
    -Windows 10 Home
-No 2 in 1 please, also do not need ultra thin and light but portability is important

-Decent battery life preferred, something that will last me through classes etc.
-Touch Screen not necessary, however I am indifferent to it.

I'll leave the rest to you, thanks so much for checking out the post and I would appreciate any recommendations. P.S. Sorry for being so picky, I get really overwhelmed when making big purchase decisions and I am not exactly experienced with laptops, only desktops.

    Buy new or invest

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:18 PM PDT

I have an 8 year old Asus machine with an i3-2350M CPU 2.3GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB hdd and it is still working great (on W7). Is it worth me putting an SSD and upgrading my RAM or buying a new machine? If this needs to go to a different sub any advice would be great!

Looking for a gaming laptop around 2k.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:16 PM PDT

So I'm kind of a novice when it comes to gaming laptops, but I think my price range could get me a decent laptop.

Truly looking for a desktop replacement, I want a 17 inch screen, I'm not interested in slim features or portable, I just currently don't have space for a desktop in my living situation.

So far I've looked at the Alienware 17 R5 and the MSI Gt75 Titan, both are a little crazy priced but seem beastly. I've just really started my search, any suggestions for other laptops to look at would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Looking for the best bang for my buck ofc and something that will last me a few years.

FPS issue with MSI GE63VR - Help!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 07:45 AM PDT

Hello everyone, I've tried everything I could think of, and this issue persists, I'm hoping someone here had the same issue and was able to solve it.

I bought a GE62VR (1060 variant) with the 120hz display. The issue I'm having is that when running games they won't use 100% of the GPU, and thus I can't reach 120 fps.

The most obvious example is league of legends. While monitoring with MSI Afterburner, I can see that the CPU sits at about 20% usage (no cores maxed), and the GPU is running at like 30%, and it's clocked down to about 900mhz. Sometimes it goes to 1400mhz for a bit, but it never ramps up to 1900mhz as it should. As a result, I get about 80-90 fps and can't reach 120.

I experienced this with Fortnite too, to a lesser extent. The game doesn't push the GPU to 100%, so I'm not getting the frame rate I'm sure it's capable of. When trying more demanding games, such as far cry 5 in ultra, it runs fine, I get 50-60 fps, but the GPU is running at its limit, close to 100%.

I'm using high performance mode in Windows, and in the GeForce panel I've set it to use the dedicated graphics card preferably.

Any one have any ideas? Thank you.

    Are there no win-win options?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 07:27 AM PDT

I've recently decided I want to get a laptop for gaming/video/audio and I'll be real honest , it's a tad bit disheartening and overwhelming at how many people have had awful encounters with almost all the companies with higher end model's .

I have a Max budget of probably about 2.1k , i hate to sound picky but here is what I'd like if any of you fine people could help me out

16gb (or upgradable) of RAM 1070 8GB SSD i7 ??? It's been a while since I've been up to date on processors Good customer service in case something fucks up (most important)

Weight doesn't really matter to me , I'd prefer a good looking one but im indifferent to it

I had my eye on the gl502vs-ds71 but people seemed to have some sort of deep seated hatred towards it due to cooling , the msi 65 looks decent but I want everybodys opinion , thank you so much ahead of time !

Is it worth buying an expensive laptop if I already have a pretty good gaming desktop?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 10:46 AM PDT

I'm looking to buy a laptop for around $600-$700, but I already have a pretty good gaming rig.

    Specs: AMD RX 480 8gb i5 4690k 8gb ddr3 ram 256gb SSD 1 TB HDD

I'm thinking about getting into video editing, but I'm not sure if I should spend a bunch of money on a laptop capable of doing so when I already have a desktop that could handle it fine. What do you guys think?

What temps can be considered normal for 1060 laptops?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 10:15 AM PDT

Recently I had purchased my MSI Laptop GS43 VR. It is an amazing laptop overall but it gets quite a bit hot under load (CPU- 90 GPU- 85 under 100% load). Are these temperatures normal for such laptops or should I be worried about it? Also would you suggest to go for Liquid metal or Cooling Pad ?

Are 2k resolution monitors worth getting?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 09:50 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm currently looking to buy a gaming laptop and came across the Alienware 17 (link below) which sports a 2K monitor with 120hz refresh rate.

    http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/new-alienware-17/spd/alienware-17-laptop/dkcwcflg044

I would like to know if its worth going for a 2k monitor on a laptop or would the difference be unnoticeable as compared to one running a 1080p monitor given the fact that the screen sizes are relatively small; 17 inch monitors.

    2018 Razer Blade Stealth Review

    Posted: 31 May 2018 09:45 PM PDT

This isn't review on specs or performance, there are more than enough resources out there for that. This is about my general opinion as a consuming user. I had been watching the Stealth for a while and loved that Razer was doing an ultra book and was rooting for them to keep it up. I recently decided to pull the trigger on the 2018 version and I do not regret it one bit.

Starting off with the feel. It feels sturdy and premium. I got the dark grey version (I'm not much for RGB lighting and stuff like that.) The keyboard is not as tactile as I might like but the keys feel sturdy and not at all cheap. The only thing with the keyboard that I wish they would fix is the backlighting for the secondary key function. There is none so unless you have every one memorized, things can get a little tricky especially in low light. The trackpad is really good I have no issues with it. It's smooth and responsive and I have never had an issue with any of the gestures.

The screen is comparable to the 2015 MacBook at least with the exception that it's not as bright but is bright enough. Nowadays, I would expect some smaller bezels but they aren't a distractions and judging by the new Blade, I expect them to fix this. I don't use the touch functionality that much but it's one of those things that is so nice to have even if you use it once in a while.

Now onto the bad. I knew about the poor battery life, it's definitely no secret. I expected it and thought it was fine, but man, It's pretty bad. I don't have measurements but it seems like if I want any type of normal usage, I have to leave it plugged in. Investing in an external battery pack, or staying close to outlets is probably in your best interest. Razer, if you are for some reason reading this please make this a priority.
After a while, it does get a little warm and is definitely noticeable. Thermals on all of my prior laptops are better than this one but it's not uncomfortable to use.

Final thoughts. I love this machine. I can't put a finger on exactly what makes me love it but I am always more than happy to open it and excited to use it. I'm not a regular Razer Product user, in fact, I haven't owned any of their products prior to this. I will admit, I love it that they are getting in the game and that they have done it so well and I root for the underdog. Common, who doesn't love the underdog? They still have a ways to go and some things to fix but I'm still always happy to use it.

If you have anything more specific you guys want to know, feel free to message me or comment below!

TLDR: Overall, great machine. Feels great and premium. downsides, battery life and thermals.

Best 2 in 1 laptop for under $2000 CAD?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 05:29 AM PDT

Hello out there, I just bought a Dell Inspiron 7573 2 in 1, unboxed it and am now having multiple issues with it. I'm going to return it to buy another one. So, what is the best 2 in 1 laptop for multimedia development under $2000 canadian? I use the whole Adobe CC suite. No real 3D rendering and no heavy gaming. It would be nice if the price included a 2-4 year extended warranty. I have a suspicion the best one might be the HP Spectre, but it is slightly more than $2000. I look forward to any feedback. Thanks ahead of time.

    Deciding on a laptop

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 02:31 AM PDT

I don't really want to get a really expensive laptop with gtx1050 as I don't think I'll use it to it's full extent. I'm considering HP Pavilion 15 AU172TX with the 940MX GPU or the Acer E5-576 with 130MX as a laptop.I mainly want a laptop with good 1080p graphics to stream, watch videos and casual usage as well as being able to run games like fortnite, csgo, overwatch, battlefield at medium/high games. Will the above laptops be sufficient with these kind of specs ? If not can you guys give me a general idea of the type of specs needed.-Also would prefer a laptop that would last me a good 2 years of usage

    Aero 15X 4k v 1080p 144hz battery life

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 04:49 AM PDT

Does anyone have any info on the difference in battery life between the 4k Aero 15x and the 1080p 144hz version. I can't seem to find any info about it other than peoples guesses and assumptions?

how long are people getting web browsing and office work with the 4K panel.

my plan is to use this mainly as a coding and software development machine, with some gaming on the side so the increased resolution would be very useful but if it hurts battery life too much then I may go for the 1080p version.
