Laptop for work/streaming movies [$2000 budget] Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:07 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Budget of $2000 AUD, laptop purchased in Australia. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Do not mind. A laptop that has necessary ports is good since we like to use an external mouse. How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important as we currently use a 17" heavy beast. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows / Mac is fine, but would like suggestions for both. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. No larger than 15". Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. There will be very light photoshop work (cropping out a background from an image). Dad mainly uses laptop for watching Netflix, creating powerpoint presentations for work, editing documents... Mainly a workhorse. Tends to use Outlook and Chrome, and they are open 90% of the time on his device. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? None. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality that is long lasting. Input for a mouse would be great, however can buy a bluetooth mouse if needed. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. It is for my Dad, who is primarily a Windows user. However, I would like to switch him over to Mac since they tend to last longer and is a much simpler OS which I think he may prefer. If I can have an indication of how much RAM he would need that would be great as many options I have found (XPS 13, Macbook Pro) all have 8gb and I am unsure if that will be enough based on his above needs. submitted by /u/akshayxd [link] [comments] |

Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Video editing (movie maker) and gaming. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League Of Legends, medium settings, and 60 FPS. Trying to decide on laptop for 2yr programmer-analyst course(~$1600 Canadian) Posted: 28 Jun 2018 03:49 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Around $1600 Canadian Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications for the money How important is weight and thinness to you? Not too important but I don't want a brick Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows 10 for school but I wouldn't mind learning about and installing Linux someday soon Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" minimum Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some intensive software development tools(says teacher) and working with virtual machines If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Not big on PC games like I use to be but I'm getting into it a little more now, don't really have any beefy games I play atm but I'd want to run games at least on high with 60fps Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard is a must, I don't want one of those shitty arrow key setups where the up and down arrow are the same key. A good build quality matters too, will be lugging it to school everyday for 2yrs plus years to come after that for work Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. My teachers say we need a minimum of 16gb ram, and a 256gb SSD is recommended. Long lasting, all around laptop Posted: 27 Jun 2018 09:37 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $3,000 US Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2-in-1, good battery life, and high specs all valued How important is weight and thinness to you? Not terribly important (assuming all 15 inch machines are heavy) Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 inches Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes, CAD, programming, and some gaming as well as lots of web surfing and videos. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? General modern AA games Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard and trackpad appreciated. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I keep my laptops a long time, so I want something built well that will last. That goes for specifications too, I want something that will be usable for several years (including gaming). So far I have looked at the HP Spectre 15 (bought and returned due to poor quality), the Dell XPS 15 2-in-1, the Surface Book 2, the Macbook Pro, the Razor Blade 15 and the Huawei Matebook X Pro. I haven't been able try the Razor or Huawei in person. Reading reviews, it seems like all these systems have major downsides: Surface Book - Initial quality, power supply, thermal throttling, cost XPS 15 2-in-1 - Loud fan, short battery life Huawei - Unproven brand, under-powered compared to others, not in stock anywhere Macbook Pro - Horrible keyboard, expensive, no touch screen, obsolete specs Razor - Thermals, noise, battery life, cost submitted by /u/Jozer99 [link] [comments] |
Looking for Non-Gaming Laptop that can run Overwatch Posted: 27 Jun 2018 11:46 PM PDT Total Budget: $1.5k preferred, but $2k if necessary. USA Form: best specs for money. Weight: IDC OS: Windows Screen Size: IDC Games: Overwatch. stable 60 FPS at Low minimum. This is probably the most important requirement. Requirements: I want it to be touchscreen (maybe a 2-in-1) but I would understand if there are no touchscreen laptops that meet the other requirements. Finishing Thoughts: this is a new laptop for college next year. I want it to be a normal (not gaming) laptop but one that can still run Overwatch in case I have time to play it still. If there are no non-gaming laptops that meet my other requirements then feel free to suggest the best gaming laptops. submitted by /u/MasterWinston [link] [comments] |
[AUS] Laptop for uni, some editing, hopefully 2 in 1 <1100USD, $1400AUD Posted: 28 Jun 2018 03:32 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Australia, hoping to keep it below $1400AUD (just under 1050USD) - closer to 1.2k if possible Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I'm hoping for a 2-in-1, but would be willing to drop that if needed to get a decent battery life in my budget (say 7 or so hours?) How important is weight and thinness to you? Will be moving it around, but pretty low on my list if it's already a 13ish incher Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Plan on using linux, but if I got windows I'd consider dual booting them. Would also consider a chromebook and putting Linux on it if that helped Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 14 inch is the sweet spot for me Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. CAD, photoshop, software development capacity would be nice but not in my day-to-day - I don't need a supermachinen No gaming planned. Would you guys recommend a dGPU? If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Not too fussed about ports and such, build quality and form factor nice but much more concerned about battery getting through the day, and capacity to do some more intensive stuff (not for extended periods) without grinding to a halt. In my budget is this possible for a 2-in-1, or should I drop that aspiration? Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Currrently found a couple options - I'm more or less set to by an HP Pavilion x360 with 8th gen i5, 8gb ram, 256SSD, and a weak but dedicated gpu because I have a deal that would get me that for about $1180AUD BUT I'm concerned on how little reviews I can find on this particular model, and the ones I do find are very variable on performance, esp battery life (ranging from <4hrs to apparently amazing) Other options I'm considering are Asus Zenbook flip 14 UX461UA which I can grab for $1280AUD (the one with pretty much same specs but no dGPU) and possibly biting the bullet and picking up an XPS 13 w/o touch for about $1430AUD if the other two have shoddy battery life and performance. Lenovo 720 or 730 yoga seem nice and maybe affordable based on some US prices but didn't find much available in Aus. I'm eligible for student discounts. Thanks for any advice fellas [Edit] Not too picky about vibrancy of screen etc, but useable outside would be a plus submitted by /u/InversePidgeon [link] [comments] |
Do I Need more CPU and RAM (m3 and 8GB)? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 02:42 AM PDT I have an Asus ZenBook UX305 with an m3-6Y30 CPU @ 0.90GHz 1.51 GHz with 8GB of RAM and a 256 SSD. It was a budget option when I bought it for £600 about 18 months ago and was the best I could afford. I love it apart from its starting to get a bit slow when I have loads of Chrome tabs open. My work requires me to have Snaggit, Photoshop, Word, and Chrome with some extensions and lots of tabs open (maybe 30 tabs across 5 instances of Chrome). I'm guessing the m3-6Y30 CPU is the weak link. However the Windows 10 task manager says both CPU and RAM are maxed out when it starts slowing down. Do you think I'd notice an improvement if I bought a budget i5 laptop with 8GB or RAM or would I need 16GB as well to solve all my problems? My current laptop has QHD 3200x1800 but I use it scaled to 1900 x 900 (or there abouts) as that is all I need. Smaller than 15" is a requirement too, unless it's got tiny bezels. Good battery life is a must too. Do you think I could get something that meets my needs for about £500 to £600 in the UK? I think my current laptop was an end of line model, so I got it for cheaper than it would've been otherwise. The current Asus laptops don't seem to be that cheap. [HK/13k HKD (1700 USD)] Portable but powerful laptop, with good battery life and build quality for 3 year Business Information Systems degree. Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:14 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $1600-1700 USD, Hong Kong Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Looking for good battery life but good performance when needed, don't need the performance of an 8th gen I7 so aiming for 8th gen I5, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD. How important is weight and thinness to you? Important, will be taking this to university/classes and when I travel. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Looking for 14 inch, or small form factor 15 inch Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. University degree in Business Information Systems, so running VMs, databases, coding etc, but also general office software. I have a desktop I'd use for heavier loads, so this is mostly to have the same capability as desktop even if not as fast/powerful etc. Possible light gaming, but most of the time I'd be using the desktop for that anyway. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Gaming not a priority on this machine. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Would like a good keyboard and reliable build quality (laptop has to last 3 years minimum), fingerprint reader if possible. The quieter the cooling the better. Touch screen not important but a good touchpad would be good but not critical. I wouldn't mind sacrificing a bit of weight/thickness for better cooling and build quality. Also want a GPU included, probably MX150. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Been looking at a variety of laptops, mostly looking at Lenovo T480s/Lenovo Ideapad 720s and the Dell XPS 15, also looked at the Asus UX30UN, fits my requirements but thermals and throttling are an issue. Unfortunately can't customise the XPS much here, so would have to get a Dell dealer to order a custom config which would probably be more than I'm willing to pay, but I really do like the XPS except for the thermals.. :(. There is however a new XPS 15 for sale for 12k HKD, which was used in a review for a laptop review site, however it is i7 and thats holding me back due to power/thermal usage. However if this is my best option I will go for it. I'm leaning towards the T480s as I can get a 20% student discount on Lenovos, and can pay around $1500 USD for a config that fits my requirements and includes 3 year warranty with a 1440p screen. I'm looking for any other suggestions or comments on the laptops I'm looking at in case I missed anything. Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/Slackbladder04 [link] [comments] |
Best Windows Laptop for Writing Posted: 28 Jun 2018 12:11 AM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $300-500 Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs for money; relatively lightweight and portable; prefer a non 2 in 1 and not concerned with touchscreen capability How important is weight and thinness to you? Lighter the better Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 or 15...11.6 if the build quality and screen resolution is exceptional for price Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Final Draft and Office If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? No gaming Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Keyboard is most important factor as I will be doing word processing and screenplay writing mostly Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Need a good quality machine for the money - use office type software, browser, and FD software only I have pretty minimal requirements, although Final Draft can be rather robust, so I think 8gb of Ram might be necessary. Not too concerned with premium specs or build quality, although I would like the best resolution possible for the money, as it will be a daily use machine. I prefer a larger display, but I can sacrifice that for a higher resolution smaller one. Basically, I'm looking for a portable machine that is more functional than my obsolete Mac Mini. Gaming laptop intended for frequent travel, around 1,100 Euros Posted: 27 Jun 2018 11:41 PM PDT Hey there! As it happens, a bulky tower isn't great to carry around, and I need a new gaming laptop to replace it. The laptop will always be plugged into external displays so that frees up a lot of factors. Total budget and country of purchase: My budget is 1,100 Euros, to be bought in France. The price is open (within reason) if an offer is really good. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No expectations other than horsepower. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not at all! Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I would rather it had no OS, if that can drag the price down. I will install my own Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. No expectations, anything goes. The laptop is to be plugged into TVs anyway. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. The laptop is going to be a gaming platform first and foremost. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I will play all sorts of games, but the heaviest loads are going to be: Ghost Recon Wildlands, Gears of War 4, and 1080p PCSX2. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Yes, the CPU. My current CPU is an i7-3770, and it sometimes struggles with 1080p PCSX2. Therefore, the new CPU should be at least as powerful, and ideally better. The 7700HQ (very popular with laptops lately) is slightly less powerful, so my laptop will need better than that. That's a point I won't compromise on, and something I realise is going to be a huge part of the price, sadly. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. The laptop will be plugged into TVs, and I have no expectations about weight, screen size, keyboard, etc. All that matter is the most horsepower at the best price. I realise a laptop will need to be expensive in order to be able to replace a gaming desktop computer. Any help will be greatly appreciated. submitted by /u/YldriMe [link] [comments] |

Laptop for university (<$1000 if possible) Posted: 27 Jun 2018 07:18 PM PDT Going into honours mathematics and I have a couple of computer science courses I need to take. - I'd probably want windows as my OS
- Other things I'd want a lot is good battery life and touchscreen. Quality of display or build isn't THAT important to me.

2 in 1 laptop for college Posted: 27 Jun 2018 10:41 PM PDT - Total budget and country of purchase:
- My budget is roughly under $800
- Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money?
- Pick or include any that apply. My priorities are a 2 in 1 form factor for note taking and battery life that can last a full day of school use.
- How important is weight and thinness to you?
- Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.
- I would like a chromebook that can run linux apps or that can can run linux along with chrome os. I also wouldn't mind having Windows, but I think I am ready to move towards linux.
- Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
- Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
- The only requirement I have is that i need to be able to program code and everything that goes along with that. I am a computer science student.
- If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
- Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
- I would like a computer that is very good for note taking in all of my classes.
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
- I am very excited about chromebooks having the ability to run linux apps in the future. I would like to do that if it is feasible to program with the linux apps that I could run.

Budget: 1900$ Country: USA Posted: 27 Jun 2018 10:24 PM PDT I mostly want to play video games and work if need be (basic applications). Total budget and country of purchase: 1900$ (2000$ is optional, but pushing it) country: USA Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I want great performance and not a paper weight that burns my legs. Money is meh. Battery is meh. How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't want a paper weight that leaves heat rashes. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I'm more familiar with Windows (although I've seen the new windows and it looks kinda horrifying) Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/a Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Lately I've been trying like hell to play Archeage & this old ASUS just can't keep up. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Lately it has been Archeage. I don't want to see my FPS drop to 0 anymore. I don't want to lag out just because my computer is loading a town or I touched a boss. I would like to be able to run great graphics as far as view/textures (minus the weather/grass/clouds etc). Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I prefer chiclet keyboard - small / flat and not huge and clunky. I use usb mouse, so having more than one usb is nice. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Not too heavy so if I want to take it places I can. Top performance or near that in games so I don't lag out in a town or touching a boss would be great. Thx so much, yawww. I appreciate your time. submitted by /u/kittiimaow [link] [comments] |
Need laptop for school, gaming, and game dev projects Posted: 27 Jun 2018 10:14 PM PDT I am going into computer science at uc davis next year. I am interested in getting a laptop that has good battery life (maybe 8-10 hours of light usage?) and I would like to do some moderate gaming on it (planning on playing Fortnite, overwtch, tf2, nothing too demanding). In addition I am really into coding and I want to create projects in Unity 3D. Can I get a suggestion on a laptop to buy? submitted by /u/PoolBubbles112 [link] [comments] |
Why is this laptop so much more expensive in Canada? Even after currency conversion it's a couple hundred dollars more. Posted: 27 Jun 2018 09:54 PM PDT |
College Laptop w/ GTX under $1300 Posted: 27 Jun 2018 12:00 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Up to around $1300ish,lower is by far better!! Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Touchscreen would be really nice, a 2 in 1 would also be fantastic, but looking more at hardware. How important is weight and thinness to you? Don't care much about the weight, but I want something decently thin, not gaming laptop big, but thinish. ~.7"-~.8" Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6" or 17.3" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. This is going to be a college computer. Will be doing photo editing and gaming aswell. Looking to run basic games, and games similar to Fallout 4 and such. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Looking forward to the upcoming Fallout 76. Would like to run that at a halfway decent frame rate. I am thinking like a 1050 4g, ti, or 1060 could do everything I would want. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? touchscreen would be nice, but not absoluletly necessary. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Overall, looking for a thin, fast, laptop I can use for gaming, college, and netflix and such. I have looked at Newegg, Amazon, bestbuy... I saw a couple 2 in 1 gtx 1050 4k displays at bestbuy for around 1.3k... Want to see what people suggest. The lower the price, the better. Thanks! submitted by /u/bikers301 [link] [comments] |
