700-1000 USD, budget can be stretched if it's worth it. Buying in US
Not 2 in 1, should be able to go a full day without needing me to lug a charger around (bonus if battery is easily replaceable for future)
Very. I'll be lugging it around most of the time
Windows
13in is the smallest I'd go but 15in is fine if the bezels are thin. Prefer to go smaller than 15in but anything between 13 and 15in works.
I'll be gaming on it. I have no background in video/photo editing but I can potentially get into some basic stuff, but again, not really a priority. As far as being an engineering major, I'm not really sure what programs we use (first year this fall) but I don't imagine that I'd be that demanding.
osu!, overwatch, cs-go, rainbow 6. I'll be very satisfied if I can get a solid 60 fps on medium but gaming isn't a priority.
Most important thing would be weight, size, and battery life. It doesn't have to be crazy thin or light though. Anything under 4lb is probably fine. I mainly just don't want something super bulky. No need for touch-screen if it saves money since I don't use it on my current laptop. Fingerprint is a bonus only if it's on the power button (otherwise I don't really care). 1080p is enough; anything sharper seems like a waste personally.
Needs to have 8th gen intel. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't really make sense not to buy one with how much of an improvement it is over the previous gen, esp. since I'll use this laptop for a long time. Also I'm open to refurb options. I was looking at something like a refurbed Dell xps 2 in 1 but I'd like to see some other options. [link] [comments] |
Laptop for sorta gaming girlfriend! Posted: 28 Jun 2018 05:35 PM PDT Hey all, My girlfriend is going to college soon and she wants to get a new laptop, around like $650-$800. Currently, one suggestion she got was an Asus Zenbook UX330UA-AH55, though she does game a little bit on steam. I don't know if the laptop is worth the price however, and I was wondering if you guys have any more input. If anything I'd like the laptop not to be too heavy for her since she is going to carry it around everywhere, so I don't want some super gaming laptop, but i dont want her having some really bad laptop that cant even run Oblivion or something on low. Maybe a laptop that can at least run skyrim on low? (only bringing up those games because she loves those games). Not sure if the laptop she was suggested was even worth the $700, so any other ideas? Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Which laptop for professional use, 4k editing & photography Posted: 29 Jun 2018 04:15 AM PDT
As a bonus, I'd also like a laptop that is friendly to use in public, so not really noisy and looks like it has some design effort put into it. I've looked at the Matebook X Pro and the Dell XPS 15. But I'm not sure if they're up the job on the video editing? Having said that I've managed ok on a Macbook Pro 2012 for the past 6 years, and I think these two outclass the current Macbbook Pro 2018 - unless the processing priorities of Macbook Pros have changed since 2012? Thanks for any tips. [link] [comments] |

Laptop for student going into college <2k, med gaming and portable Posted: 28 Jun 2018 05:54 PM PDT Hey guys so quick background I love to game but I also want a laptop that is somewhat portable. One main thing is an SSD because I want it to boot up fast in class. The main suggestions I have received are a Dell XPS 15 (1.5k variant) and the Razer blade. However the low spec version with 256gb SSD and a GTX 1060 is sold out and I'm not sure when it will come back. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
LTE 2in1 with bright screen and long battery life? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 07:03 PM PDT I was eyeing the X1 yoga but sadly the LTE is only for the 270nit screen which is dull. Any alternatives?
Any recommnedations or thoughts are appreacated :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jun 2018 02:16 AM PDT Hello, I am wondering if the integrated graphics on this 13 inch spectre can run 2D autoCAD, smoothly. Or would you guys suggest I have to upgrade to the 15 inch because the 13 won't hang. Thanks [link] [comments] |

Posted: 29 Jun 2018 01:34 AM PDT [Urgent!] Sorry if anybody thinks this is off topic. I've come across this Nitro 5 on acerrecertified.com: Is this safe? I mean this is incredibly cheap. How can it be so cheap??? Another question: Do Acer Recertified laptops and Dell Outlet laptops carry international warranty? Edit: Also see this. I know about Acer Aspire 5 and Aspire E15. But then I check the outlets to find these. Help me decide. Thanks.

Posted: 28 Jun 2018 09:32 PM PDT Been trawling the various "best gaming laptop for 600" pages and not seen anything that particularly screams at me. A couple of things I've seen suggest the Acer Aspire E15 and the Acer Aspire 5. Both of them seem like the kind of thing I'm looking for but I don't know much about this sorta stuff and could do with a more knowledgeable opinion (I can't really work out what the difference is between them other than cosmetics). Any help would be appreciated, thanks! [link] [comments] |
How do I know if I need a new laptop? Posted: 29 Jun 2018 12:05 AM PDT Hi, So I have an old Lenovo laptop I bought 7 years ago and it's kinda working good after updating it to Windows 10 and upgrading the ram. However, there some things that are starting to mess up because the new drivers aren't compatible with the laptop, for example, the Bluetooth capability. I have looked at the Acer SF314-52G-53GF and it fits my needs exactly. However I am a little hesitant of buying the new laptop and afraid of getting a buyer's remorse. Should I buy the laptop? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 08:17 PM PDT Going to college in a few months and these are the requirements for a laptop for the science/engineering majors. Budget is ~<$1000 Processor: Intel Core i7 or AMD equivalent Display: 14" or larger Memory: 8GB or higher Hard Drive: 256GB SSD or higher I/O ports: Two USB 3.0 ports Video out: HDMI or DisplayPort Wireless: AC preferred, N minimum OS: Windows 10 (preferred) for P https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1398212-REG/asus_fx504ge_bs73_i7_8750h_8gb_1tb.html I was thinking of picking this up but wondered if the 128 GB SSD and 1TB would make that much of difference to the 256 GB SSD. Posted: 28 Jun 2018 11:59 PM PDT Hi folks, Looking for a laptop that I'll mainly use just in my house. Further detail below: LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Not at all important
Windows
N/A
Gaming - League of Legends, The Witcher 3, Doom, Pro Evolution Soccer Will use Adobe InDesign and Photoshop too
I'm not particularly exercised about it
Ideally would be able to hook it up to two monitors without mirroring them, I have two HDMI monitors and a mini display port (don't mind buying another adapter if I need one) Did not necessarily need to be able to use the laptop screen as a third monitor but it would be nice Also ideally would have reasonably good on board memory - the ability to have a big drive alongside an SSD would be good And it's a minor thing but would like to have Bluetooth too [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Jun 2018 08:00 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: 1,000 USA Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I prefer good battery life, and specs. How important is weight and thinness to you? Important, as I want it to be somewhat portable, but it doesn't need to be the lightest or thinnest. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Any will do. I own an iPhone, but I'm not sure if that should factor into this. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Maybe some photo editing, and gaming isn't necessary. Some basic gaming would be nice. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Rocket league would be the main game I'd want to play. Don't really know much/care about settings. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality would be good. I want this to last me for while. I'm not a student, so all I really need this for is internet browsing, watching movies and YouTube. Etc. Thanks! Please help me decide between HP 15-dc0051nr and Acer Helios 300 i7-8750h! Posted: 28 Jun 2018 03:31 PM PDT So I am in a dilemma, because these two laptops seem to have sprung up from seemingly nowhere and both are very competitive for their price! both have the same CPU and the GPU but here's the thing: HP laptop is for $999 right now. (1 TB HDD + SSD) :http://www.microcenter.com/product/507831/omen_15-dc0051nr_156_gaming_laptop_computer_-_black This here is the Acer Helios 300 8th gen refresh: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CTHLX8C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_T7wnBbNK7W0SX The difference is that acer has overclock-able GPU and a 144 Hz display all for $1199 (idk how they managed that) (SSD only) Which one should i go for? what issues other than heating should i look for? I can definitely buy the HP and an aftermarket screen 120 Hz model no.: N156HHE-GA1. This display (unlike other 120Hz displays) works with brightness controls when swapped out and it also has 94% color accuracy. (link). what issues other than heating should i look for? I know for one fact that the HP always runs on the 1060 and it does not switch back to the intel GPU when there is no workload (like 99% of other laptops do) [link] [comments] |
Laptop for engineering student Posted: 28 Jun 2018 03:30 PM PDT So I'm an engineering student looking for a new laptop. Let me start of by saying I know very little about computers but I've decided I want to start gaming with pc as oppose to console during my free time. I'm particularly interested in the msi gs65 or gs63 due to their portability for school use and gaming capabilities, plus they are not overly expensive. My question is, would it be smarter to pay less for the gs63 with the 7th gen i7, or go for the gs65 with the 8th gen (I've heard the 8th gen is substantially better)? Keeping in mind I'll be using cad and solidworks etc. Another thought I had is would it be cheaper/possible for a newb like myself to just upgrade the cpu in the gs63 to the 8th gen? Thanks! Need a laptop good for light gaming and schoolwork Posted: 28 Jun 2018 09:54 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: 500 or less, but if this is unrealistic for what I want, let me know. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. - Decent battery life, however does not need to be great. How important is weight and thinness to you? - Not that important at all. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux? - Preferably Windows, but if I'd get more for my money with something else, I'd be willing to go in a different direction. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** - Big enough that a somewhat tall guy sitting at a desk won't get a sore neck from bending so low. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. - I'd like to play things like ROBLOX (mainly), Rocket League, and other light stuff. Hopefully something that can also run most basic applications pretty easily (like Paint dot net/ Photoshop/Discord). I'd hope to be able to play these games with mid range or good fps (I don't know if I'm making sense here? basically, if 1 is low fps and 10 is high fps id like to play near a 5 or higher.) Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices? - I'd like a keyboard that's easy to adjust to and easy to use when you type things often, as I write a lot of essays for AP courses. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. - Once again, if I can't get these kinds of things with the budget I have then tell me what is closest to what I need. Thanks so much for the help! [link] [comments] |
[US] Which is a better value for the money Acer Aspire E 15 or Dell Inspiron 15 5000 i3 Posted: 28 Jun 2018 09:33 PM PDT I'm buying a laptop for my mom. Was about to place an order for E15 and then saw Costco sells Dell Inspiron 15 for the same $400. Which one would you choose? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K1IO3QW/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_8?smid=A3C0IBSA2XBL9N&psc=1 or Dell looks much better to me. But what is the catch? [link] [comments] |
[USA] Which of these is the better deal? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 05:46 PM PDT I'm strongly considering getting a Dell G7, and I'm wondering which one of these is the better deal: I know the one on Amazon has better specs. I'm just curious if they merit the $80 difference in price?

Durable touchscreen- Do those even exist? Posted: 28 Jun 2018 09:42 AM PDT I'm starting vet school in August so I am in the market for something new for school! I am looking for something to take written notes on that will last 4 years and won't fall apart and break on me. A girl can dream right? I have a desktop screen I would to be able to connect to. Super bonus points if a pen is included, and there are slots/ports for me to add extra memory.
Touchscreen comparable with a pen for notes Sturdy build that won't break with me hauling it around to class and places
Here are the minimum specs I need to run the exam software to school. Operating System: 32-bit and 64-bit Versions of Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10. All Windows 10 Creators versions, including the Spring 1803 update are now supported with Examplify version 1.5.0. Alternate versions of Windows 10, such as Windows RT, and Windows 10 S are NOT supported at this time. Only genuine, U.S.-English versions of Windows Operating Systems are supported ExamSoft does not support Tablet devices other than Surface Pro as detailed below CPU Processor: 1.86Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo or greater RAM: highest recommended for the operating system or 2GB Hard Drive: highest recommended for the operating system or 1GB of available space For onsite support, a working USB port is required (Newer devices may require an adaptor) Internet connection for Examplify Download, Registration, Exam Download and Upload For technical troubleshooting, account passwords, including BitLocker keys, may be required. Screen Resolution must be 1024x768 or higher Pretty basic, but included just in case. I have been looking at the HP Spectre x360 13", Lenovo yoga 720 13", and the surface pro 2017. Suggestions outside of these are welcome too of course! [link] [comments] |
Looking for a design & architecture powerhouse in a minimalist package Posted: 28 Jun 2018 08:35 PM PDT I'm starting my masters in architecture this fall and I'm in need of a beast of a machine without the bulk or tackiness of a 'gaming PC'. I have over a decade of experience as a daftsman, so I know architecture software well and the demand it puts on my desktop machines, but I need something mobile for school. I'm an Apple guy at heart, but alas Autodesk doesn't make Revit for MacOS, and this software is where I currently spend 90% of my Thanks in advance for your advice!
