    Good battery life

Very important, ultra-portability as I need to go around with it.

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows

    13-14"

    Lightweight

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

Laptop for every day Use and Minor Games (League of Legends and Hearthstone)

    Posted: 31 May 2018 11:12 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: about $500-$600

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specifications for money. Although it would be nice if it lasted ~5 hours without being plugged in

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? not important at all

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. preferably 15.6, but this isn't too much of a problem.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Light Gaming, every day programs such as microsoft word, watching videos (youtube and twitch.tv)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? League of Legends and Hearthstone at 60 fps

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would prefer an SSD if possible.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I currently have a desktop for gaming and hard uses. Mainly looking for something that I can carry around to my class to take notes and bring to work. I would enjoy having access to Hearthstone and League if I desire to play and am away from my desktop. I currently own an Acer Aspire V3-571G, which has probably lived a good life at this point (I think it's been about 6-7 years). It can hardly do any multitasking or play League and Hearthstone at this point. Being able to watch videos while playing a game or doing work is important to me. Additionally, I have had to make some fan adjustments to this laptop, and it has been rather clunky to fix (this process required me to open the entire computer, remove various parts I have never seen before, and take out the fan manually). If something comes up, I would like to be able to fix it without much hassle, but this isn't a key priority.

Which of these 2 gaming laptops would you recommend?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 10:57 PM PDT

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N6KLBR1/ref=twister_B0773KLGLS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

    https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GE63-Raider-RGB-012-Performance/dp/B07BBCMKLW/ref=sr_1_17?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1527828119&sr=1-17&keywords=gaming%2Blaptop%2B120hz&refinements=p_n_feature_four_browse-bin%3A2289792011&th=1

MSI has the 8th gen intel with 6 cores, as well as a 3ms response time as opposed to 5, but it has a slightly smaller screen, no g-sync.

ASUS has G-sync, slightly larger screen

    Both have 120hz, GTX 1070's

Is the ASUS worth it over the 8th gen and 3ms for the G-Sync? Or would it not really matter?

    Inspiron 15" 5000 5577 Refurbished or Aspire E 15?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 12:41 AM PDT

I'm planning to buy a laptop, which I want for college, mainly for video encoding, programming and occasionally some light gaming. The CPU of Aspire was slightly better than that of Inspiron's, but GTX 1050 4GB is clearly better. I found the Inspiron in the Dell Outlet for $586 and the Aspire E 15 for $600 at Amazon. I'm not very experienced in this as this is my first time buying a laptop. Also, I'm a bit afraid of outlet (refurbished: risks, etc.). Any advice would be gladly received.

    • Total budget and country of purchase: ~$600, US

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specifications

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not much important. But too heavy and thick isn't preferred either.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Linux or even nothing.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. ~15"

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes. Slight gaming, mostly programming and video encoding.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good backlit keyboard and a comfortable touchpad.

Help me choose! Or recommend something completely different!

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 04:01 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: 2,500-2,700USD

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery Life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not as important

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 and below

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming on the side, I will be attending Med School so I doubt I'll ever need to do any "heavy" video editing but it never hurts

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? AAA titles, both from current gen and past games I might've missed. Im big on games with open-world exploration rather than FPS

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Modest design and sleek form factor

I filled the questions above because I'm open for suggestions however I'm also practically dead set and torn between the Microsoft Surface Book 2 (GTX 1060, 256/512GB) and the New Razer Blade 15 (GTX 1070, 256/512GB).

As I will be heading to Med School away from my hometown in the fall I kind of want my laptop to be both a work station for studying, note taking and whatever else Med School can throw at me while also doubling as my Entertainment Station so I can play some games in whatever short "free" time I might have.

Also I've chosen both these computers not just on their specs but on their designs, both of them are conservative looking (except the Razer which has just enough amount of "Flare" I'm looking for) compared to most modern Gaming Laptops I've seen and prefer that sort of look.

Surface book 2 vs MSI GS65 vs Dell XPS 15 9570 vs Gigabyte Aero 15X

    Posted: 31 May 2018 03:49 PM PDT

Guys I cannot decide. I'm about to buy them all and just return them to test them out, just kidding I can't because they aren't all available in stores with a full return policy :(

I want to use a lightweight laptop on my commute/travels for heavy Photoshop/lightroom use, some video editing in Premiere Pro, and 3D rendering using C4D Octane and Maya.

I've tried out the Surface book 2, the touch feature is nice but I only use it like 30% of the time. It is good for drawing though, and everything seems to run smoothly on it, and I can get the 2 yr Microsoft warranty. Trackpad is great, but I feel like I can get higher specs though for a better price?

I'm trying out the MSI now, waking it from sleep takes a minute, and I've had some weird issues already like chrome wont scroll and sometimes things get pressed that Idk how I pressed? I'm learning to work around the crappy trackpad, but the battery is dead in 4-5 hours of use. I also already noticed a dent above the keyboard -_-. But I do love the 32gb ram and 1070gpu and the 180 degree fold! We even tried VR on it and it rocked.

I haven't gotten to try this one, but I Love that the Dell XPS has the i9 CPU (is it a big difference though?), the best battery between all of them, the 32GB ram, the color accurate monitor, and a touch screen...but the 1050ti for GPU kills it. Idk how well Octane will work on that kind of gpu…!!

Gigabyte Aero 15x specs sound amazing spec wise, but I've just heard bad things about it being buggy? I can't even find it around NYC to test or even see in person, and their customer support is lacking? Not sure what to think about it...

    What do you guys suggest?

    Thank you!

Germany, and I would save money for your suggestions. but around 700€ maybe?

    * **Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.**

best specifications would be most important.

but I also like 2 in 1 but is not really necessary

    * **How important is weight and thinness to you?**

not really that important, but it should not be huge brick

    * **Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.**

    Windows or no OS

    * **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**

    no, would take suggestions

    * **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**

I would do photo editing and video game programming, also 3d programming, and then test and play the games, but also play games like Dota on it.

    * **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**

On the laptop I would just play small games, strategy games, Dota, Indie games and stuff like that, but it is not important

    * **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**

A mechanical keyboard would be great, cherry.

    I don't need a touch-screen(only in a 2-1build) or finger-print reader and also no optical drive.

    * **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**

    Hey, thanks for the time.

I have a good gaming pc so I don't need the Laptop for games.

But I want to program Games on it and design stuff in Blender/Photoshop and programs like these.

I would like to spend as little as possible but if you say some parts are necessary I will listen to you.

Video editing laptop, 15" or larger, $700-1,000, USA

    Posted: 31 May 2018 04:54 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Trying to keep it in the $700-1,000 range, $1,000 being the absolute maximum and ideally something around $800. Purchasing in the USA.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Specifications is most important, it will mostly be kept at home so battery life isn't super important.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very important.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Preferably Windows but Mac is alright.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. As long as it's 15" or larger it's not an issue.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Video editing, programs like Premiere or similar software.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A nice keyboard and good build quality would be a plus.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This laptop isn't for me, I'm helping a cousin pick out a new computer for video editing. They asked me for help since I've built a few desktops in the past but I'm by no means an expert so I'm looking for suggestions. Thanks in advance to anyone who gives me some feedback!

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Not really
    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Mac
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-1 only
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**Photoshop and Coding
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
    • I don't game
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I need it to last for a while. I really want something with a nice screen to watch movies. That's why the Alienware caught my eyes. OLEEEED.

I'm going to be using the laptop mainly for coding, watching hulu or youtube, and maybe one day video/music production.

I want the Alienware 13 because it has an OLED screen. And OLED screens are the best screens out. I'm all about colors. It'll also have better specs than for the low.

I want the Macbook Pro because it's just really nice looking. Reliable. Thin.

Dell XPS also looks nice. However, the Alienware has a better screen.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply.

Best specifications for the money. Battery life isn't too important to me. No 2 in 1.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not terribly important, a lower weight would be nice but it doesn't really matter too much to me.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux.

    Windows 10

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Definitely prefer a larger screen size. 15in+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No editing, just basic microsoft programs.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Dead by Daylight, able to run highest settings if I want.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'm a simple man so nothing really specific. A good keyboard would be nice. No touch screen preferred. Maybe a decent amount of USB ports. Reliable build for traveling overseas.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'd like to use this laptop as a backup to my current, so I need a LOT of storage space. And obviously the cheaper, the better! I appreciate any and all advice. Thanks so much.

13-14 in Laptop for traveling $700-900

    Posted: 31 May 2018 08:39 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: USA $600-900

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life and components. I don't need a convertible.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? Weight is really important as this will be constantly used when I travel and go abroad. Weight should be under 4 pounds.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-14 only

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. In order of importance: Word Excell Scrivener Photoshop for occasional photo editing Stardew Valley My Time in Portia Fallout Civ 6

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Medium to High but it not necessary as I have a pc for gaming. I only really want to play stardew for stress relief the rest of the games listed would just be a bonus.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Build quality is my main priority as this will be flying all over with me. It needs to be able to handle a few falls if that does occur. It needs to last me at least 4-6 years. I am wiling to buy warranty if its worth it.

I would like the option to upgrade the ram and the storage. An nvme slot would be nice for a future upgrade.

At least one usb type c and a headphone jack.

Easily accessible and replaceable battery that I can quickly swap. It would be great to have a swappable rear battery so I can bring another battery with me.

8th gen processor and an ssd thats atleast 256 for the boot drive. An extra slot for an ssd would be great for a future upgrade. At least 8 gb ram.

I am occasional required for a video conference so no awkward camera placement please.

    Dedicated gpu is not necessary.

I am going to be using a mouse and keyboard thats plugged in via usb for longer trips so it needs atleast 2 usb ports.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would really want the 8th gen cpu as apparently its much faster than the last generation. Build quality and battery is my main priority.

    Decent laptop under $1000?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 08:33 PM PDT

I'm looking to invest in a new laptop and I'd like to get some opinions. Looking for something small, either 11.6" or 13". Preferably 11. Must be touch screen. I don't play a lot of games, but it should be able to run games like Hearts of Iron or Total War smoothly (if not, that's fine). Any suggestions?

looking for a gtx 1070 laptop with conservative looks.

    Posted: 31 May 2018 09:58 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: budget < 2000, can go up to 2500. USA
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. best specs for the money

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? as long as it is not extremely heavy.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. windows main os, linux secondary.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17 at most

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. yes will be doing video encoding 3d modeling and computation heavy programing. games at most will be as demanding as a heavy modded skyrim.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? want the games to be able to run at 1080p/60fps. 4k is not nessary for my gaming needs.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? would like a 4k screen(for watching video, but not gaming, not a deal braker. ) and a Blue ray player would be a plus. i7 processer. 16+ gb of ram.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I would like the laptop not to look out of place in a professional setting. Looking for a good laptop for a first year Computer Science student, 15", >$1200 CAD, Canada

    Posted: 31 May 2018 08:07 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: Max $1200 CAD, preferably less. Canada.

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't really care for 2 in 1. Battery is important since I'll need it throughout the day. Specs are obviously important, but I don't think I need an absolute powerhouse.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't necessarily need a thin and light laptop, but something not too too heavy since I will be carrying it around with me.

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. I may also need linux, not sure.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I personally like something around 15", but I'm fine going lower.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I do occasional Photoshop and video editing, but that's primarily on my desktop, so I shouldn't have a huge need for that on my laptop.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Gaming should be a non-concern for this laptop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A good keyboard is important since I'll be doing a decent bit of coding on this machine. Otherwise just something that can last me about 4 years through my Undergrad.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. N/A.
