Children's Home In Serious Need of Internet Update Posted: 31 May 2018 02:04 PM PDT This is probably one of the more wacky requests you may see on this sub, but I see a lot of people more intelligent than I that could possibly at the very least offer me some direction. It should be noted that 'novice or beginner' is generous assessment of my tech knowledge and abilities. I'm currently living/volunteering at a children's home and outreach mission in Mexico, where internet is available but not incredible performance wise. I have recently been put in charge of our computer system, which was basically built from scratch by a 'computer genius', or at least someone considerably more skilled than I, who had to leave suddenly, leaving behind a very confusing and messy system. This system was built together as donations and things became available. I believe the mentality was for lack of a better analogy: rather than untie the shoe and tie it correctly, they just kept adding knots as needed, and now we have a very impossible knot to untie. Over our decently sized property, we have connection coming from at least 7 seperate internet lines that come in, that I can tell. These lines are sent into nearly 30 switches over the property, with at least 10 different subnets serving different areas. I think... The lines that come in are then filtered through a Cisco smart switch and into some old work stations serving as routers (which are running Ubuntu... again, i think), back into switches that go through the property. Almost all of our equipment has been in use for probably a decade, and being donated this equipment was likely significantly used before it arrived here. Our whole system seems to have been 'Frankenstein'ed' together, which makes googling solutions near impossible. All of our smart switches are Cisco made from 2005 or earlier. Each have not had relative updates since 2010 and are no longer supported for the company. I don't think what we have has a much longer shelf life. Things are running in incredibly dusty environments on Windows machines, routers made of old work stations, Linux and Ubuntu and variety of things that are far above my knowledge. It appears that if one of the switches goes down, everything goes down. The former position holder had loosely documented the layout of all of these switches. I do have this loosely documented map that is attached here, which shows the general routes of our cable, but I can already confirm that this is not fully accurate. We can see where lines go in the ground, sometimes we can see where they come out, often times not. I could spend pages trying to explain what I think I'm looking at but probably would not describe accurately all that that is here. All of our phone/internet lines to my knowledge enter in at what is labeled 17. Currently, if you look at the photo, something between the 6 switch and the 1 switch has gone bad (no connection siting invalid IP configuration for Ethernet connection-I've tried every Google answer in the book), leaving the entire right side with no access. This is another one of those 'we see where the cable starts, but not where it ends' problems. So I think rather than fix what is broken I would rather build over the mess that is the current system of aging, undocumented, exposed in many spots, and weather worn cable going in and out of the ground in various places. I'm sure this would all be horrifying to many of you. It's horrifying to me and I don't even know what I'm looking at half the time. Going forward, I would love to have the mentality of starting from scratch like we have nothing set up yet. We have the ability to spend some dollars, within reason (in the $1,000 to $10,000 range, potentially more, ideally less) to update our current internet system and simplify it considerably. Also we no longer have to worry about the buildings across the field taking up the left half of the photo, so we just need to serve the main cluster of buildings on the right. Considering the layout, what is the best way to supply internet to the property. What would you think is the best route to go? Like I have stated I would really like to update and simplify, but I have no idea where to start. I want to make this as user friendly and as organized as possible. If that means limiting switches, subnets, wireless over cable, you name it, I'm on board. Now that we have been blessed with a decent budget we can actually look at current/modern solutions rather than try to work with outdated/donated equipment. I feel like I've said a lot and I am still positive I have left out some vital information that would be helpful so if you need to know more, please ask and I'll do my best to answer as I can. I hope I have been somewhat clear. Like I said before, I am truly over my head when it comes to this kind of stuff, so any help and guidance is appreciated. I know this is a big question, but I could use as much help as I can get. EDIT: Sounds like getting a network diagram setup for the sub here is the first in a plan of many attacks. EDIT 2:I may have gotten lucky. Found more documentation in what I have. This was labeled as the logical map and seems to document the general routes and models of the switches. This as well which loosely seems to cover what each switches VLAN ports are set to. This is likely not completely accurate but close. I can see that the last link isn't the greatest quality, I have it in pdf format if that is useful. [link] [comments] |
Why does targets website require access to audio recording? Posted: 01 Jun 2018 03:02 AM PDT I just noticed this when I accidentally went onto the US website (www.target.com) on my Android phone. The Aussie site (www.target.com.au) doesn't request it but the US website requests "permission to record audio". Seems kinda sus. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Opening chrome on my laptop immediately depletes 100% of my battery which is at 70% of health Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:07 AM PDT Ran some sort of a diagnostic through cmd which showed one error and that was that chrome was using too much resources. It's absolutely ridiculous that it can discharge the whole battery in a second. Please help. Tried one more time, same result, but now it says it's at 60% health. Something is very wrong here. EDIT: guess it's not just chrome. It dies on its own after a minute. I don't get it, the battery is new and worked for a month just fine. [link] [comments] |
All google searches automatically redirect through Bing Posted: 31 May 2018 10:40 PM PDT Helping someone out by proxy. Here's what I know and what the problem is. *All google searches automatically refresh twice, then suddenly moving to a Bing version of the search *In order to do this, the user is taken through a server called https://trafficvalidation.tools. It seems to be happening automatically. I'm not that tech-savvy myself, so I am unable to help any further. If any of you can help(quickly), that would be great. [link] [comments] |
Windows 10 suddenly extremely slow, programs crashing at simple tasks Posted: 01 Jun 2018 12:37 AM PDT Hi everyone. I'm writing this from my phone for reasons that are (about to become) obvious, so please excuse any typos. When I powered on my computer today, everything seemed fine, nothing out of the ordinary. I opened Chrome and had about three tabs opened when I wanted to return to my Desktop. This shouldn't (and previously wasn't) a problem, but I couldn't interact with the Desktop at all and after about 15 seconds, it crashed and did not restart like it usually does. Same with other programs once I want to do anything remotely resource intensive (four Chrome tabs). After rebooting a few times and disabling all programs running in the background (which didn't help at all), I decided to revert to a system restore point that I created about two weeks ago. I ran rstrui, selected the restore point, and confirmed my choice. About 90 minutes later, it still showed the "Initializing" message. I rebooted my computer, was able to log in, but am now where I started. Nothing changed. I couldn't find any solutions online, mostly because I don't really know what to search for. Searches like "Windows slow, Explorer crashing" didn't really result on anything useful. A virus scan didn't return any results (not that I would be able to click on "Remove"), and both sfc and chkdsk went well for about 20%, at which point they both just stopped. No crashing, they just kept staying at those 20%. For hours. I really hope someone can help me out here. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and thanks in advance for any help. Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:40 AM PDT Basically that. I am on windows 10 latest updates as far as i can tell. I am using sades 903 headset (been having this problem even on the last pc i had). What happens= i have to set my pc volume to 2 or everything is too loud, and even at 2 i HAVE TO set the volume lower in youtube and games or it's still too loud (flash games that don't let me set the volume level are hell for my ears). What i'd like is not having to lower the volume of everything i open and just use windows main volume where 100 is loud and 2 is barely noticeable. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2018 11:52 PM PDT So long story short, I updated Chrome after about a year and it screwed a bunch of stuff up because the updater wasn't working & it wouldn't let me load chrome properly. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling, but they make it so hard to delete, I finally decided to go with a restore point from a couple days ago and get used to the old chrome. When the restore point finished, I was welcomed with an unsuccessful restore. It was an Appxstaging problem, so I googled it and read a thread about going into safe mode and doing a bunch of stuff in the cmd to change the name of the Windows Apps folder in order to restore it. I kept getting access denied, and decided to go back to a normal windows boot. I was welcomed by a plain black screen, my cursor able to move around. I didn't log in yet, I can't click cntrl+alt+delete, I cant get into the task manager, I cant click space and type in my password to get in, nothing. The only thing I can do is move my cursor and click window+P to bring up display options. I've googled countless times but they all say to open up the task manager. I'd appreciate any help, if anyone finds me a solution I would happily gild you. Have a good one [link] [comments] |
Is there any problem temporarily using a 90w charger when the original was 135w? (Laptop) Posted: 01 Jun 2018 03:36 AM PDT Ive read differing opinions online. I know it would charge faster, but would it make my laptop slower using a 90w with 4.5a and 20 volts output? The original charger was 135w with 6.5a and 20 volts output. I game sometimes on it, but not constantly. The price difference and availabilty is the reason I'd get a 90w charger until a 135w charger is a bit cheaper. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Sony Xperia z5 cant connect to Hilfiger 24/7 smartwatch Posted: 01 Jun 2018 03:34 AM PDT Hi and thanks for advance. Recovering email via post email creation. Posted: 01 Jun 2018 03:08 AM PDT I have a very old facebook created back in 2009, but during that time I was quite new to the internet. I created an account and entered an email that didn't exist. At that time FB was not hard at new accounts. Email confirming thing is not a thing. Now, someone got access to my FB and changed its password, name, picture to a poser. I decided to try the 'forgot password' option and it sent a code to a nonexisting yahoo mail. So of course nothing. Now what I did is created a Yahoo mail using that name address I used to register back in 2009 and luckily it was not taken. So I send another email waiting for the code to show up but nothing, I keep resending after. Nothing. Am I not going to receive email if it was registered in FB first and actually created just now? Or is this a bug that I need to contact Yahoo or someone? Thanks in advance! Edit: I meant Recover facebook account via post email creation @ thread title [link] [comments] |

Port Forwarding issues - Need help troubleshooting. Posted: 01 Jun 2018 02:58 AM PDT When I built my new computer I planned on turning my old rig in to a gaming server for me and my friends. After months of troubleshooting using guides, crappy youtube tutorials and old forum threads I'm finally out of options and am not really sure how to continue troubleshooting. I was about to try voodoo but figured I'd try my luck here first. My ports are not showing up and other people can't connect to me. Nothing in Simple Port Tester and nothing in services like CanYouSeeMe or PortChecker. The setup is: Raycore Media Converter - Asus AC1750 Router - Desktop I have done all the basics like getting a public IP, whitelisted ports in my firewall and generally just trying a bunch of different settings in the router. Aside from all that I've done the following:
Also I don't know if it is related in any way but I'm throwing it out there just in case. I've been having trouble sending game invites or host games in general on steam. People can't seem to join me and sometimes it won't even display me being in the game for other people. I hope I'm not being vague but I'm not sure what further information I could supply to help identify the issue. [link] [comments] |
Task Scheduler not working, cannot update my graphics card drivers. Posted: 01 Jun 2018 02:51 AM PDT When I try to update my Nvidia GeForece Experience I get this message: "Nvidia installer cannot continue; Windows task scheduler service should be running to continue. Please start the service and try again" and then when I look for Task Scheduler, a message pops up that says 'the remote computer was not found.' I click ok, and then I get this error 'Task scheduler service on the target computer cannot be contacted. Please ensure the service is running properly' I have also searched for Task Scheduler in services and tried fixing it from there but I got this message ' the task sheduler service on local computer started and then stoped. some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs!' Nothing seems to be working. What's the problem and how do I fix it? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2018 02:14 AM PDT Other than my geforce gtx 950 nvidia update, is this how people usually do it? My PC just randomly restarted for no reason and i'm spooked, any tips would be appreicated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2018 11:49 PM PDT Hey, a few days ago out of the blue my mouse stopped working and a little exclamation mark appeared on its icon in the Device Manager, after a couple of unplugs and plugins and restarts it began working properly but now the probles seems to be reoccuring, I tested in on another PC and it was working fine, so what exactly can I do? Problem with Audio over HDMI to a tv Screen Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:55 AM PDT So, Its been a couple weeks since I got a dual monitor setup by Hooking up my laptop to a tv screen with an Audio Supported HDMI cable. Today when I turned the screen on to extend my display, it extended instantly, but windows won't detect my TV's speakers anymore. The display seems to working just fine, but there is no Audio. Obviously, something broke. I've already tried starting stopping and restarting the Audio Services. PS-Another issue I have which is not a major one and probably has more to do with wiring in my house, but whenever I turn off/on any switch in my house (Lights / fan / etc) The TV screen will loose Input for a split second and go back to the default blue screen, only to come back in a second or two. Posted: 31 May 2018 11:35 PM PDT Like the title suggests, for som reason the computer refuses to connect. I tried some of the basic stuff but came short handed. The computer is connected through a router and the internet and eifi work perfectly fine, any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:36 AM PDT Hey, so i recently got a new bluetooth speaker, and frustratingly when i turn my phone away from it or move too far from the speaker (3-5m) the music will start stuttering, advice appreciated, thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2018 11:02 PM PDT Hello, My computer is about 7 months old. About two weeks ago it started rebooting randomly while I was playing games. To further complicate the issue, it seems to also reboot commonly after finishing playing a game and while I'm simply doing regular computer usage (browsing Chrome). However, I can work from home on the same computer on a Skype call for 7+ hours daily (M-F) without any reboots. It never rebooted while I'm working. One time, it rebooted about 10 minutes after I hung up on Skype and finished working and started using Chrome (no games were played). To be clear, it still reboots even when Chrome isn't loaded. I've only seen it reboot at night (after 7pm). It is a power surge type of reboot where the OS is not reporting any issues. I am running Windows 10 and I see Error 41 in the event log. I can't replicate it with any stress tests. I've ran prime95 and a GPU stress test together and had zero issues after around 30 minutes. When it does happen, it seems it happen during an action (a keystroke or mouse button press). All other devices are on including my two monitors when it reboots. Here are some of my specs: ASRock Taichi X299 eVGA 850W Platinum PSU 4x 16GB DDR PC3200 Memory sticks Intel 7820X CPU eVGA GTX 1080 Ti FTW3 2x M.2 1TB 960 Pros 1x 10TB WD Helium drive Topre keyboard (this might be important because it started shortly after getting this) Logitech gaming mouse 2x ViewSonic Xg2703‑Gs An UPS battery backup (computer is plugged into this directly) Here is a screenshot of the BIOS right after a reboot: https://www.dropbox.com/s/uim6oon7cdkkc3b/IMG_20180601_011939.jpg?dl=0 Sometimes it doesn't happen at all, other times it'll happen continuously then stop and not happen again until I complete playing my game. What should I do? What steps should I take from here? Do you think it is my PSU or Windows 10 (some update?) or possibly something else? [link] [comments] |
Very weird issue with this laptop. Posted: 01 Jun 2018 12:53 AM PDT I work on computers, cleaning them up and checking hardware and stuff like that. But this is the first time I have ever heard or seen of this problem. (Same situation for the way experienced techs I work with) This is for the small laptop (P25T Dell). For a little background, the laptop only has 32gb of available space and the operating system took up almost all of it. So we ran disk cleanup in hopes of it creating some more space by cleaning up some unnecessary files. This is where it gets really weird, when the cleanup finally happened, the HDD had less space! I'm talking a whole GB less. Then the even WEIRDER part, if you click on the drive and see how much space it has, it will have "X" amount of space on it. But if you close the file explorer and look at the amount of space it has this time, it will have a completely different amount on it. Sometimes more than before, sometimes less. I looked around for problems with those laptops, but nobody has heard of this ever happening. Any ideas or theories would help out, thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Jun 2018 12:36 AM PDT Since the newest update i have problems with alt tab. My friends are also experiencing this problem. I was not able to fix it by using google. My screen turns black for 5 seconds if i try to get back into the game(full screen apps). How do i fix it? Do i have to reinstall win10 or just change some settings. Execuse me for bad english. I am not a native speaker. :/ [link] [comments] |
How long should I expect bitdefender initialization to take? Posted: 01 Jun 2018 04:17 AM PDT I just built a new pc with win10 pro and enabled bitdefender. I chose "only encrypt used space", "use the new xts-aes encryption method", and i checked the box for "validate that you can decrypt without the recovery key before encrypting". I then restarted, and for the past ~8 hours my computer has been at a loading screen with the mobo manufacturer shown and a set of white circles spinning around near the bottom of the screen. is this normal? Everything i saw seemed to suggest this initial restart should be almost instant, though i also saw plenty of warnings about not interrupting bitlocker mid-initialization (though i literally just reinstalled the OS, so it wouldnt be that much work to re-set it up). Computer stats: chipset: x200 CPU: skylake-x TPX 2.0 from Intel TPP Drive being encrypted is a 1TB samsung 970 pro. I dont think this should matter, but in case it does: there is a rather large raid 5 array being initialized using RSTe. I REALLY hope its not waiting for that to finish, since that still has a minimum of 2-3 days left. [link] [comments] |
Internal hard-drive not detectable and/or write protected in CMD - computer won't boot. Help? Posted: 01 Jun 2018 04:09 AM PDT I am not particularly tech minded and get most of my help from google so I am sorry if I can't explain my issue well but any help would be appreciated! Laptop (Lenovo Ideapad) has ceased booting. The lenovo screen comes up before eventually just loading to a black screen. We are able to get to CMD and upon running chkdsk it returns the error "The type of file system is NTFS. Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected." Diskpart list volume does not show/detect any drives. Would there be a reason the internal drive could suddenly be write protected and is there any way that I can remove that if so? I can use another machine to make a bootable USB but don't know if that would even be an option if the laptop won't detect the internal drive? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 May 2018 08:37 PM PDT I realize there are similar questions that exist but wanted to be a little more specific with my own. I don't know if "database query" is the right word. I have two roommates that are both tech savy. Both are computer scientists. I know that it's possible that they can see, to some extent, what occurs on the network. I was just wondering how much they can actually see and what they know. I have a pretty questionable porn habit and watch/download some weird shit (all legal). Recently they have been making these comments/jokes that I perceive as a passive aggressive way of letting me know, that they know my porn habits. And I feel really violated by their lack of respect. One time when I was browsing a actually saw a drop down box appear on my browser in Firefox and it looked like there was multiple arrays storing data or something, but I did not give it a second thought because I thought maybe the website was being wonky, and was trying to bust one. I have looked closely at my computer with linux and could not find any malicious files or anything. I am also an engineer so I have some tech knowledge. Anyways, I am directly plugged into their router (I know). I also managed to log into the router and I looked at the routers DNS log and it was turned off. But I am also aware of open DNS and vaguely familiar with other methods. My concern is that they have more access than DNS log. I suspect that they might have accessed my windows account at one point or another. Or maybe they have some kind of data base that can store my search queries, but that is beyond my scope of knowledge. What are your thoughts? How much could they know as far as files downloaded and websites visited? [link] [comments] |
