So the Dell XPS 15 9570 is out. Is it now the go-to for a sleek, powerful business laptop? Posted: 03 May 2018 06:09 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: Around $1,500, but I could probably go a little higher if the difference was dramatic. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No need for 2-in-1, moderate battery life but I don't need the best, the specs are most important here. How important is weight and thinness to you? Looks and weight are important to me because of reasons... I just like attractive electronics. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15-ish. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nothing super heavy. Work with Adobe Creative Suite files and juggle several hefty Excel sheets at once. I do really want everything to be snappy and responsive, though. I am a heavy gamer, but I do already have a desktop gaming rig, so as long as the laptop can run Darkest Dungeon and adventure games while I'm traveling then I'm good. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'll game, but nothing heavy. Point and clicks mostly. I'll save PUBG and DOOM for my desktop rig. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Quality is king. I want solid, reliable components that will last me years. Do not need a touch-screen or finger-print reader. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Basically the XPS 15 9570 looks fantastic in my opinion. The build I am looking at has the i7-8750H Processor with 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, GTX 1050TI, and non-touch 1080P IPS screen at $1,500. I think this build is similar to what many others on this sub will be considering right now since the new XPS 15 has just released. Looking for critical opinions and alternative suggestions because I am not really sure what else is out there that might be a lot better for a little more or nearly as good but for a lot less. submitted by /u/ThenThereWasReddit [link] [comments] |

CS Student looking for decent laptop Posted: 03 May 2018 03:35 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: 2500 EUR max - Portugal Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life would be a plus (not a necessity). Best specifications for the money How important is weight and thinness to you? I would prefer something thin. I dont really care about weight, but I don't want anything too heavy. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. I've been using Linux in my laptop for some years. I learned to hate windows for anything school-related and can't use it anymore for work/programming. I would prefer linux/macOS, since both run unix. It might be worth mentioning that I'm going to be programming in .NET next year for university, so it must be able to run a windows VM without any problems. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 is ideal. Can consider a 15 inches one. 17 is out of the question Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No video editing, no gaming. I want to have a laptop that can hold heavy IDEs, VMs and other programming related stuff without stuttering. I want it to be as smooth as possible. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No touch screen. Finger print is optional. Looking for a great screen combined with a great keyboard. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been pretty much divided by a high end Thinkpad and a Macbook Pro (if I'm buying a macbook pro, i want to wait for the 2018 ones. It seems that the newer models have a lot of problems with the keyboard) Here are some pros and cons for each one: Thinkpad Pros - Good specs, low price
- Super reliable, easy to maintain and replace
- Nice keyboard ### Cons ###
- Screen and trackpad are behind Macbook Pro's by a lot (from what I heard from reviews and other redditors)
Macbook Pro Pros - Good specs
- Good build quality
- Great screen and trackpad
- Best looking in the market, imo ### Cons ###
- Expensive (could afford the highest spec'ed one, but would be nice to spend the extra money on other stuff)
- Latest edition's keyboard is terrible
In order to program in .NET I would need to either run a VM or dual boot windows EDIT: Apparently macOS now has support for .NET development natively PS.: Not planning on buying a new laptop after this one, at least until I graduate (still 4 years to go, so it must hold that time without problems) submitted by /u/Pretela [link] [comments] |
Looking for a laptop for gaming/working Posted: 03 May 2018 10:49 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: $2000 but I'm willing to go higher, and I'm from Australia. Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. I don't really mind if it has 2 in 1. I want at least 6 hours of battery life when I'm not gaming. How important is weight and thinness to you? Kind of important. I want to be able to carry it around. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13" to 16". Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Black Squad, Fortnite, PubG, Overwatch. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Average of 60 FPS. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I want a hinge that won't fail on me. Wouldn't mind a fingerprint reader or face recognition. I would love a good keyboard because I'll be doing a lot of typing. Thin bezels. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I like backlit keyboards and prefer normal looking laptops, not ones that look like a spaceship. 😂 submitted by /u/Nzxik [link] [comments] |

Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. 2-in-1 would be cool but not necessary. i'd like at least 5 hours of battery life. Specs are important too. How important is weight and thinness to you? Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good keyboard is important as I will be taking notes on this laptop as well. Touch screen would only be necessary for a 2-in-1. Optical drive is not needed as I have an external one. I'd like decent build quality. Nothing too plasticy. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. [MX][$3500 USD] Old-school PC gamer wanting to get into new stuff. Budget of ~$90,000 MXN in Mexico. Posted: 03 May 2018 10:30 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: I have an effective budget of $3500 USD and I'm in Mexico. Import taxes are a thing so everything electronic costs more (I have $90,000 MXN). But I'm hoping to spend much less than 3.5k (if not, then so be it). Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. No need for 2-in-1, touchscreen, or good battery. I need top specs for gaming. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important at all. Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17'' at least. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming oriented. I play mostly old games (GOG.com) and emulators, but I want to get into the new stuff. My immediate objective is to run Witcher 3 in beautiful settings and go from there playing more modern games. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would like to be able to play Witcher 3 in Ultra settings and high FPS (60? I'm not even sure). And then play other modern games too as they come out; hopefully this will get me playing games that come out in 5+ years (on low settings I guess). Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Good build quality matters to me. Peripherals not so much because I will buy external keyboard/mouse. One thing that I want is a big SSD/HDD combo because I like to have all of my video games installed, and I think a big SSD would help performance a lot. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want a big SSD to have most of my games installed on it (~600GB of stuff). But to be honest I'm not sure about this because right now my games are non-demanding, so I don't know if I would benefit from an SSD. I do like to have all my games installed and ready to run, so I think modern games will benefit from installing them in a big SSD. I was thinking of buying this hidevolution MSI gt73vr Titan Pro but then I saw the upgrade hidevolution MSI gt75vr 7rf Titan pro-202-hid I don't know if this last one is overkill... or maybe even the first one is overkill too? I wanna save as much as possible obviously. Any help is appreciated, thank you. submitted by /u/ArturoGurrola [link] [comments] |

Need to replace my desktop... almost. Posted: 03 May 2018 03:53 PM PDT I have a nice big 27" monitor. i would like to get a laptop to replace my relatively decent desktop (i5 4690, 512 gig samsung 950, 32GB RAM) with a laptop I can easily plug in my current monitor+keyboard+mouse So I guess what I want is a laptop with at least 16GB RAM, and a couple USB-C ports. Ideally I'd like to be able to just plug a single USB-C connector to maybe a hub, and be able to get both Displayport for my 4K monitor, and HDMI for my TV. I don't need both working at the same time but I need them to be connected to be connected at the same time (so I can switch between both) Screen size is not an issue, but I look for portability. maybe around 14" , something I can tuck in my bag when I travel. Bonus if the laptop is able to be charged through the same USB hub. I think macs do this but my budget doesn't allow me to get a mac, and the monitor I have isn't apple so it won't do this anyway. It's just a dell p2715q As for country, I live in Argentina but I won't be buying it here. any US or Amazon Europe shipping to Argentina is fine. Keyboard needs to be US English though. I'm looking for something between $600 to $1000 Total budget and country of purchase: USD 600 to 1000, US. Euroamazons shipping to Argentina also OK Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Laptop, battery at least 2 hours How important is weight and thinness to you? relatively important. dont need paper thin but i want something to travel Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows, linux is a bonus. Mac is OK but i dont thik it's in my price range. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. around 14" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some video editing but not often. Eluktronics p650 or dell g7? Posted: 03 May 2018 09:08 PM PDT Ok thanks to all the advice in here I have narrowed it down to these 2. The eluktronics Seems to have a good reputation and I like that I can customize it but it is a bit more expensive and only has the 4 core cpu. However I can build it with a 120 hz screen which seems to be reccomended, also I can get a 1060 Gsynch GPU, 512gb SSD,1 tb 7200 rpm HDD, 16gb ram, windows refresh installation media and better thermal paste. All for a little under 1800. The Dell is almost 400 cheaper, but I don't know what monitor it has. Is 120 hz really that much better? Is a 1060Gsynch much better than a regular one? The Dell also has the 6 core cpu, which might be better down the road maybe. Is a 6 core cpu that much better or future proof? The Dell only has 128gb SSD and 5400 rpm HDD. So I would need to upgrade those. How easy is it to do that? Does it void warranty? Can I put a regular SSD I already have in it, or does it have to be one of the new nme or whatever drives? submitted by /u/Catshannon [link] [comments] |
Recommendations for a 2-n-1 for Professional School Posted: 03 May 2018 08:47 PM PDT Hello everyone. I'm looking to buy a new laptop as I make my way into profesisonal school soon. As of now I have used an Asus G75VW (a brick) since 2012 and now it's more of a desktop always sitting and plugged in for battery. Now I'm looking for a 2-n-1 because I would need it for primary note taking, viewing 3D models, portability and reading textbooks. I will not use it for gaming at all. A few laptops I've been looking at are the surface book 2, Samsung notebook pro, hp Spectre x360 and Lenovo yoga. The main things I want out of it are decent battery life, decent performance, good for school use, 15inch screen size and decent specs. I always like top tier specs but I think it would be best to settle for an i5 but if the price isn't bad I'll do an i7. I really wanted the surface book 2 but it's really expensive. So something sub $2000 maybe? I need suggestions. Thank you! submitted by /u/TH3FR3M [link] [comments] |

I've only used Windows before, but I'm willing to try Chrome OS or Linux should all other requirements are met. - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
All I know is that it shouldn't be a tablet but it shouldn't be a 15.6 either. Anywhere in between that best match the other requirements. - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No. The most demanding task that this laptop will ever have to do is watch a youtube video. - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
NO GAMING PERFORMANCE (I already have a gaming setup at home). This laptop will be solely use for mobile work (I drive to meet clients and only sometimes need to make adjustment to documents and print on the spot). If there's ever any gaming to be done, it will be on simple ASCII roguelikes. I do not want any gaming performance whatsoever if it hinders mobility, battery life, weight, and size of the laptop. - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
- No optical drive and no numpad since those will increase size and weight of laptop.
- No touchscreen since I'm guessing that uses more battery.
- Just a basic keyboard will do.
- The SSD or HDD and battery should be replaceable (as in I can buy the parts and do it myself without the need to bring out the hot torch or ripping other important stuff out besides the casing).
- Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I don't have much knowledge on SSD and HDD other than one is much quicker than the other. I leave it to you guys to determine what is best. For example: Do SSD use less power overall compared to HDD? I would also prefer low heating and quietness. I hear that HDD slowly "dies" over time, as in, you can usually tell when it's starting to break or corrupt so data recovery is a lot easier. On the other hand, SSD failure are more catastrophic should they ever occur? Most of the work I do will be back up to google drive, so SSD failures aren't an issue if what I said was true. submitted by /u/Xetari [link] [comments] |

Colkege Bound - $2000, US Posted: 03 May 2018 07:10 PM PDT As many people I'm on my way to college in August for my freshman year. I'm interested in a cheap laptop, but, I also want to build a modest pc as well so that I can game. I'm interested in the portabilty of the Razer Stealth + an external GPU but, due to lack of experience, I'm not sure if this is the best way to go. Total budget and country of purchase: $2000, United States* Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Good battery life * How important is weight and thinness to you? Thinness is preferred* Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows or Linux * Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 preferred, but 13 is suitable* Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming: League of Legends, Skyrim, and Witcher 3 * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Mainly League of Legends and Skyrim, and max settings preferably * Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Need a laptop for software development and occasional gaming Posted: 03 May 2018 06:26 PM PDT Total budget and country of purchase: USA, $1500. Can go a bit more if it means a big difference in performance/quality Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Best specs How important is weight and thinness to you? Somewhat. I am thinking a 15.6in screen laptop since it will be a bit lighter and I will be using external monitors Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows and Linux Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15.6 Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Some gaming (I want a gtx 1060). I am a software developer working a lot with React, Node.js. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I'm happy with whatever a gtx 1060 can do, chose that since it's a big boost from the 1050ti Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Don't want a touch screen (gimmicky). Would like an IPS display but it's not a deal breaker. Would like a 512gb sdd and a 2tb hdd. 16gb of ram Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. If this didn't have a 144hz display (cool, but I don't want to pay for it) it would be perfect: http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np7851-clevo-n857ep6.html?startcustomization=1#group-1 I'm not a huge gamer anymore (although I would still like a gtx 1060 since it is a massive performance jump from the 1050ti and support for 3 external monitors on some laptops) so I'd rather not pay for the premium display. What I really like about the laptop linked above is that it seems to be the cheapest thing out there with a 6-core i7 and a gtx 1060 with outputs for 3 more monitors. Another laptop I am considering (with i7-7770 and 16gb ram): http://www.eluktronics.com/N950KP6 My only issue with this one is that the sager laptop is almost the same price but has a better cpu. What do people think of Eluktronics using desktop cpus? Maybe this cpu is actually more power than the 6-core laptop i7 overall? This one also seems to have more storage configurations? Hopefully the form plus details about the two laptops I'm looking at right now is enough information. Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/General-Gaijin [link] [comments] |

College student looking at a possible deal Posted: 03 May 2018 06:19 PM PDT If I can get an HP Pro x2 612 G1(laptop and the screen detaches like a tablet)that comes with intel i5-4302y, 8gb memory, 256gb ssd, 12.5" screen, no optical drive, windows 10p, 1080p touch, 1 year warranty, for $550. Is that good? The sales guy said it's at a "good" price because the model is a year old. I will use the laptop for browsing reddit, YouTube, and basic GoPro video editing. Nothing crazy. I'm hoping to get a laptop to last at least 5 years, is that a good possibility with this laptop? submitted by /u/mydogtaco [link] [comments] |
