Matebook X Pro review coming from a MacBook Air.

    Posted: 31 May 2018 12:18 PM PDT

I purchased the Matebook X Pro for 1350 from Microsoft with the student discount.

Build: It is a very sturdy laptop and fits perfectly in a backpack.

Trackpad: It feels just like the MacBook Air.

Keyboard: Great typing. Switches are very similar to the MacBook Air but their noise is lower pitched.

Screen: The screen is great and I love the thin bezels.

Software: No bloat besides the driver manager.

Gaming: People underestimate the mx150. It runs pubg at a playable 40fps at mostly low and a few medium settings and [fortnite at 60 FPS](https://i.imgur.com/BBVVyRH.jpg with medium settings. I would never use it a a primary gaming machine, but it would be very useful for lan party's.

    Battery life: average

Dislikes: It can get very loud when gaming.

Overall, It feels like the spiritual successor to my MacBook Air in design and size. It has a fantastic display and build quality and it is priced competitively. If you are willing to pay a premium for build quality and portability then I would definitely get this laptop.

I have never done a reddit review before so ask any questions that I left out.

Need help! CPU frequency drops when gaming.

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:35 PM PDT

I just received my Lenovo yoga 730 15". Specs are i5 8350u, GTX 1050 4gb, 8gb ram. I downloaded overwatch, fortnite to test how it would run, and after like a minute of gameplay the fps goes down to like 20-30 fps, really bad stutters, and when I checked task manager to look at the CPU speed it would be hovering around 0.8 GHz, when normally it would be at around 3 GHz. I have looked through a lot of solutions online but still am not able to solve this issue, please help.

[HELP] Laptop (Lenovo flex 2) Blue screened

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:25 PM PDT

Not sure whether this is the correct subreddit but I just wanted to throw this into the abyss of reddit. My laptop blue screened probably 2 years ago know and I just came across it again recently and was wondering whether it was salvageable. I remember trying all kinds of ways to fix it but none seemed to work. It currently displays the error code 0xc0000185 after 2 minutes of black screen and then a minute or so of the Lenovo logo and the words automatic "repair in progress" or words to that extent appearing with a loading circle. Literally any help is appreciated, thank you.

Gaming laptop with solid build, not shouting out its a gaming laptop, and can run games well.

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:25 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: $900 but I prefer under $750, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Battery life secondary to specs for gaming

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? not priority but nothing over 8 pounds

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Anything that can run overwatch etc

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 12+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Overwatch, Pubg, fortnite, hearthstone, etc

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? reliable build, keyboard thats solid

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Preferably not shouting out "HEY IM A GAMING LAPTOP", not to loud. Thanks :)

    Best 2018 user experience laptop (xps15, aero 15x, gs65, blade 15)

    Posted: 31 May 2018 07:43 AM PDT

My question is, of the new gen laptops with stronger GPU's (1050ti and above), Which one gives the best user experience? I'm talking the little things like battery doesn't die fast on sleep mode, amazing trackpad that lets you feel like you don't really need a mouse, scrolling isn't choppy, everything seems to run great, feel great, and easy to use without running into headaches?

    Worth upgrading laptop RAM?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 01:41 PM PDT

First time posting here, thanks for any and all advice! There's a sale on Newegg for G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB 260-Pin SO-DIMM DDR4 2400 RAM for $76.99. I have an Acer Aspire 7 laptop that has 8gb of DDR4 2133 RAM and I was thinking about upgrading it to 16gb. Is this worth the price, and are there any compatibility issues that I should worry about between brands and the 2400-2133 MHz? I read online that the computer will just put both at 2133 but some people say you should try to match the brand and frequencies.

edit: I'm really in it for the lifetime warranty, alternatively would ebay be a better/cheaper place to look?

    Asus Vivobook S S510UA, zenbook uX430UN, or Ideapad 520?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 12:07 PM PDT

    Hi!

I'm located in Europe and I would like to know which one of these machines is best for light gaming. At most I would like to play Nier Automata at lowest settings, generally likely Overwatch on mid settings.

These are the only machines available in my country that have the exact specifications I want (mx150, i5 8250U), considering anything better will make the laptop heavier, which is critical, since I will have to carry it around with me. However, battery life isn't critical to me.

I have tried researching all of these machines, but sadly, the Vivobook and Lenovo computers do not have enough information about them. I was wondering if anyone has any experience to share with these laptops. Would be greatly appreciated.

I was wondering about the UX430UN model as well, I have heard it has thermal throttling around 73C. Can this be changed in any way, for example, getting a cooling pad, or changing settings via software?

    Thanks in advance!

What's are some good gaming laptop recommendations?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 12:05 PM PDT

I've been looking into purchasing a nice gaming laptop, but with all the different brands and styles out there I don't know where to start.

My budget is about $1,000-$1,750. Give or take a couple hundred of course. Ive known someone who has the Msi GS63VR Stealth Pro, from what I've seen, I think that one similar to that would be a good fit. But I also heard that laptops with the Intel core 8 compared to the 7 perform about 40% better. And I couldn't find that same Msi laptop with that core.

Does anyone have any good recommendations or tips on what to look for? Thank you!

Best gaming laptop with my budget

    Posted: 31 May 2018 10:05 AM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase: up to $1000, USA

    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Pick or include any that apply. Decent battery life, but specs for gaming are top priority

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? not overly bulky, can be a bit beefy

    • Which OS do you require? Windows, Mac, Chrome OS, Linux. Windows

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. nothing under 11inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? overwatch, pubg, hearthstone (lol) No idea what specs I need for them, but good graphics and framerate

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? N/A, no shitty keyboards though

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Im looking for a solid gaming laptop that has a good screen, specs and will not fall apart like many laptops out there, battery life not top priority but is a plus.

Has anyone replaced their optical Drive with a HDD using a Caddy? there seems to be a three way switch beside the connector and I don't know which Position I should keep it in

    Posted: 31 May 2018 03:25 AM PDT

I just replaced my laptop's DVD Writer with the HDD from the laptop using a caddy like this : Caddy

There is a switch on the left that is supposed to change the mode of the caddy.

The issue I am facing is that when I copy some file from the hard drive, the speed keeps going good and then suddenly becomes zero for a few seconds and then again becomes normal and so forth.

Seems to me like the interface shuts down in between.

Has anyone faced this? Which direction have you set your switch to? Mine has three positions.

Power Ribbon Cable burned. Should I buy motherboard?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 05:17 AM PDT

Hi Redditors, I don't know where to post this query.. so I posted it here, so here's the thing-

I have a laptop and the power button doesn't work so I usually take my keyboard off and join power ribbon cable to the small clip thing on motherboard and it works all the time.. so today I was trying to do the same and then the contact part of ribbon cable got burned while connecting to the small clip thing on motherboard.. I was shocked scared and quickly took away my hand from there n so the cable fall onto the clip thing and the fire went off and I begin to smell burnt plastic.. I checked the clip thing n there's a small linear protrusion on this thing and then for motherboard on that area there's no damage I can see and then I cut off the burnt part of cable and tried to connect to plug thing but it didn't work. So I need your help to know if I damaged my motherboard and have to buy one. Here are few pics - https://imgur.com/gallery/ySWwHgd
