    Simple Questions - May 31, 2018

    Posted: 31 May 2018 05:12 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

So, what was the final CPU% loss, post Meltdown/Spectre patch?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 11:11 AM PDT

I'm curious what the average CPU % loss was post patch for Intel chips on Windows/Linux? I'm just building a new top of the line system and I need to decide whether or not to go Intel i7 8700K or Ryzen 7 2700X and this may weigh in some as I'm doing research on cons and pros of each chip. Thanks for any references and info.

How safe is it to vacuum my room?

    Posted: 30 May 2018 06:11 PM PDT

I usually vacuum my room once in a while, I just remove my pc and put it outside the room to do so. Btw my room has carpet. Is it safe to vacuum the room while the pc is there and turned off? How close to the computer?

House burned down yesterday, gotta build a new rig

    Posted: 31 May 2018 09:13 AM PDT

Like the title says I had a pretty shitty day yesterday and I need to build something new. I haven't kept up to date with current PC technology in a while so I'm asking for help on making sure I picked the right parts together.

Alright so huge edit. I want to clarify that I do have a good living situation, have clothes, food, gas money etc. all covered. I do some graphics work in Photoshop for a small game project so this is part of getting some income as well. Removed all the Amazon stuff and adding an updated build.

    Best decently priced router?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 01:58 PM PDT

I'm in the market for a decently priced router to replace the default Comcast router. I realized I get charged 11 dollars a month for it and figured buying my own would save me in the long run!

Willing to go up to 150 but would love under 100!

Is it true that using sli will become redundant in the near future?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 09:48 AM PDT

I'm looking to purchase parts for a new build and a huge money saver for me will be the GPU (I have a gtx980).

I have been told that there would be no point in me picking up another used 980 to take my vram total to 8gb as Devs are starting to no longer support this?

    What do?

Sorry if this is a totally dumb question folks.

    Cheers.

Edit: I'm an idiot. I didn't know sli doesn't stack specs. Wooowwwwww.

What would be a fitting price? (if pre-built)

How much cheaper would it be if i built it myself?

I'm building my first pc tomorrow

    Posted: 31 May 2018 07:15 AM PDT

So, finally I have all my parts for my build and im planning to build my first pc tomorrow. I have a couple questions for the bios settings, etc.

    1. Should updating my bios be the first thing I do?
    2. I don't want any kind of overclocking (for now), and ive read my cooler is not that great for overclocking, but fine for stock speeds (Cryorig H7 with a 8700k). And I want to get the best gaming experience. Should I disable MCE?
    3. I bought 16gb of Ram clocked at 3000mhz. Should I enable XMP? I am really confused about what XMP is honestly.
    4. Should I change anything about the fan or case fans?

    Thanks in advance

How important are more cores really for games?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 12:15 PM PDT

A friend has an Intel Core i3 6100, which is a 2-core 4-thread 3,7 GHz CPU. Even though the CPU has only 2 cores, he says he doesn't have any problems playing games. This includes modern games with advanced graphics and physics etc. even if a 4-core CPU or better is recommended.

Meanwhile I see people talk about 4, 6 and even 8-core CPUs for gaming. Does this make sense other than for streaming gameplay? Are there games or situation where you really need them? I don't understand why everyone seems to buy at least 4 cores and usually 6 or more now if 2 is enough for this use case.

I don't play games myself, therefore I don't know much about their CPU usage.

    Realtek high definition audio problem.

    Posted: 31 May 2018 03:23 PM PDT

Hey i'm not sure if this is the right place to post, but i'm having some troubles with my headphones. I've just assembled my new pc and I'm using iphone's headphones. The audio is working just fine but my microphone is not detected. It worked fine on my laptop tho. Headphones are plugged in the headphones' jack. (It didn't work in the microphone's jack). All my drivers are updated. Should i just buy a headphones splitter? I don't get why it worked on my laptop and now it doesn't.

Is a Radeon RX580 good enough for 1440p gaming?

    Posted: 31 May 2018 03:11 PM PDT

I just got a job for the summer (woo!) so I was thinking of upgrading from my Intel Atom laptop.

So, with all these games being announced, I was wondering if an RX580 will be able to run them at 1440p and medium-high settings. I was going to pair it with an Intel i5 8600k and 16gb DDR4.

    Thanks in advance!

Looking to Upgrade Monitor (Possible future proofing)

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:47 PM PDT

    My PC specs are

    Ryzen 5 1600

    AMD R9 270X

    16 GB Ram

    120 GB SSD

    Win 10

    My current monitor is a

VX2739WM 27 Viewsonic with 1 MS and 60 HZ from like 5 years ago

I will make this my side monitor, and use the new one as a main monitor for gaming.

I have a TCL 40FS3800 40 as a 3rd monitor that is above me for my switch and movies

Given my current specs, my GPU doesn't allow for anything crazy high in terms of FPS ( most games are 40-60 on medium to high graphics). When Cyberpunk comes out (in the year 2077) I will either get a PS4 pro (maybe sooner) or just upgrade my GPU to something better.

    Main question:

What do I need out of a main gaming monitor? Ultrawide? Curved? 144hz? 75 hz? High Res support for PS4 Pro?

My Ideal budget is under $200 with a possible stretch up to $300. I think I would want it to be at least 27 inch.

Thank you I hope I provided enough info!

Edit: had wrong TV model number...

Computer fine for a few weeks, now won't get past POST

    Posted: 31 May 2018 12:29 PM PDT

So I built my computer, ryzen 2600x, asus 1060 6gb, aorus x470, 16gb corsair ddr4 3000mhz. Everything has been great except for the original EVGA PSU ceasing operation after a couple short weeks.

After a trouble free week with a new power supply, I power it on, it begins the POST, but when the diagnostic light hits the RAM, it immediately starts over. (Lights are supposed to go cpu, ddr4, gpu, OS)

The thing is, I've tried two sets of RAM, the old and a brand new pair, in every configuration, and the results are the same. The new set isn't listed under the supported RAM for my motherboard, though other of the same frequency/brand/capacity are.

I also tried resetting the bios and changing the cmos battery with no effect.

    Any expertise appreciated, thanks!

Looking For Guidance On A Server

    Posted: 31 May 2018 10:42 AM PDT

At least I think it's called a server??? I'm not sure. Here is what I am trying to accomplish. I run an small handmade business out of my home. I have two engraving machines that I need to be able to run off of one laptop. Each machine connects with 1 USB. I also would like to be able to to store and access all of my engraving jobs on the "server". In addition to my two engraving machines, I need to be able to print from 3 printers AND my cameo. So I guess I am looking for a tower that can handle 6 USB plug-ins as well as store all of my engraving jobs, while also being able to access them all from one laptop.

I realize this may be a really dumb question. I know you pros can guide me in the right direction. Thank you so much for the help! Any recommendations welcome. I appreciate all insight from you all.

This will hopefully be my last post before pulling the trigger! Looking to build my first PC.

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yup!

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming. Fortnite, Overwatch, Skyrim, Fallout, GTA, and any other cool games that catch my eye.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'm shooting for 1080p 60 FPS at a bare minimum on high settings. I'm hoping on the more competitive games (Overwatch and Fortnite) I can get upwards of 90-100 FPS.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Ballpark is $1200, though as you will see by my potential build, I'm ok going over if it will make the difference

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I know I included it in my build, but there is a chance I will be able to get Windows cheaper/free through my girlfriends work. Lastly, I know my monitor is a bit overkill for most games, but I figured for the price, I would future proof a tiny bit.

Thank you to everyone in this community that has helped me out over the past few weeks, I've learned a lot!

    4K, improvements over previous list

    Posted: 31 May 2018 02:18 PM PDT

3840x2160 60Hz gaming build. No overclocking. Country: UK.

This is an improvement over the previous list with ~£300 more spent for these reasons:
    - Reduce CPU bottleneck, even though it may only be a small improvement.
    - Remove the need for upgrading in the future: 16GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, Noctua fans/cooler (the 2 included case fans are the exception).
    - Peace of mind since 4K is a high resolution by today's standards.

I've opted for the lowest latency 2666 MHz RAM at an incredible CAS 13. Supposedly this is more beneficial than going for higher frequencies, which would require spending more money on both a Z-board and the higher rated RAM anyway.

Monitor not included in the list but obviously it will be 4K 60Hz G-Sync. OS will be Windows 10. I am a bit unsure of how useful G-Sync is in some games, but I suppose it can always be disabled if it does cause issues.

quick edit: probably replace NH-U14S with NH-U12S which is 25mm less wide to ensure there is no collision with the graphics card.
