Posted: 03 May 2018 07:36 AM PDT I haven't seen anyone talking about it, and I just woke up to it this morning. Player Screenshot My first impressions are really positive. I love the new player design, the playlist view now reflects the shuffle correctly instead of jumping around, and it's still early to really say anything but the shuffle algorithm feels better to me as well. It seems like they're merging a lot of my favorite parts of GPM into YouTube music, so maybe this is a sign that they'll just be rebranding that app instead of making a new one? Anyways I just wanted to hear some thoughts on the topic and learn some other new additions that I haven't found yet. Update: Quick look at it (lol Google deleted my video so here's a gif Looks like they really only changed the now playing list and the player. Everything else looks pretty similar. Update to the update: Alright, so I see a lot of people asking "Why use YouTube for music" and I thought I'd explain why I do. Library: Basically every song you could want is on it in very good quality in my opinion. I've found that most artists have their own channels that they upload their music to as well. As of now the only songs I've ever been unable to find a decent quality version of are anime title songs (thanks Sony copyright squad for blocking them in the US) and some brand new albums (most that I look for are released on YouTube though). Additionally you get access to all sorts of awesome remixes (they got a bad name back in the day, the new ones that producers are making now are some of my favorite tunes), huge mega mixes (chillstep + alan watts anyone?), live radio streams, podcasts, comedy shows, and anything else you can think of. Channels and Subscriptions: Which brings us to my next favorite part, Channels. Channels are awesome. You subscribe to artists and promoters you like (Some of my favorites include mrsuicidesheep/suicidesheep, koala kontrol, chillout bear, diversity, proximity, and tons of others that I can't think of off the top of my head) . I love having this constant stream of new music, and it's where I've found most of my favorite songs. That's where subscriptions come in (desktop only?). The channels you subscribe to upload songs frequently, many do daily or weekly uploads, that get sent to your subscriptions tab. If you can find a few promoters you like, you will never run out of new music to love. If you're not doing this on YouTube I can say without a doubt that you're missing out. Radios: Best algorithms I've used. Blows every other service I've tried out of the water. Probably won't work for everyone, but it's the bee's knees for me. Now for the app: Yeah, it's not perfect, but YouTube as a music service is the best music experience I have ever used, so I'm willing to deal with its shortcomings, since it's just a glorified mobile client. I could list all sorts of features it's missing or things it does wrong, but this redesign is a huge step in the right direction, and as someone who simply can't go back to GPM (tried a few times, but I just can't find the right music for me) I hope it continues to get better and becomes the best it can be. Anyways, I'm sure I forgot a bunch of stuff, but feel free to ask if you have any other questions. [link] [comments]

Are sensors (gyro, accelerometer, em field,...) getting better over generations? Posted: 03 May 2018 09:33 PM PDT Or do the manufacturers stick with proven, cheap parts? Which phones have the best ones? I just love that the smartphone is basically a tricorder :) Also, is there a standard suite or do some models have different capabilities? [link] [comments]
