Want to buy my first Xiaomi Device - Got some questions

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 09:21 PM PDT

    Hy Folks,

so currently i and my wife got a Moto G2 LTE. The Snapdragon 400 isn't up to our needs anymore so we need something new.

I'm considering the Redmi 5 plus because we really like the design and the display. But there are some things that we need of a phone.

So currently the Situation is this: The Moto G2 runs Lineageos with magisk and twrp as the recovery. I can deal with not having Lineageos for a while (The 5 Plus is just an interim solution).

Since the 5 Plus got official TWRP Magisk seems to be a no brainer.

So here are my questions (I know about the bootloader unlock procedure. Just in case):

Can i get OTA Updates with TWRP? Does magisk survive OTAs (if even possible)? Do things like adaway and drivedroid work with the MIUI ROMs?

    Is this a reputable seller?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 12:22 PM PDT

My cousin wants a RN4 but wants to buy from amazon and sent me this link but I get the feeling he might get a lemon. Has anyone bought a xiaomi from amazon before? I only used AE so far.

The seller is MVD mobile, got a 99% score so I guess it can't be that bad right? what are the odds they are selling refurbs?

Does the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus support fast charging and/or wireless charging?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 06:37 PM PDT

Hello! Basically what the title says. And if it does, how much does it take for it to charge? I couldn't find this information anywhere, as some webpages said it does, others it doesn't, and others said it does but you would have to buy another charger. Also, a question for those who own a similar-sized phone: is 6-inch too big? I own a Nexus 6p which has a 5,7 inch screen, and I think this size is quite big but good, so I am not sure whether I am gonna like the size of this device or not... Thanks!

Redmi Note 5 China has one of the best speakers I've heard

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 09:04 AM PDT

So I had a few phones with exceptional speaker quality, namely Axon 7 mini with two front facing speakers (Which I believe slightly edges out the HTC 10). Mi Note 3 which has makes the earpiece act as a tweeter to provide more mids and treble. Pretty good.

But I didn't expect to get this kind of speaker quality from the Redmi lineup. It even trumps my Axon 7 mini in terms of bass quality, it has clear vocals and fairly decent treble. The volume goes way up too, without any distortion. I'm impressed that Xiaomi has able to put this kind of speaker on their Redmi lineup.

And with S9's two speaker combo, I do hope they follow suit with their Mi7.

    Posible fake xiaomi mi A1

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 05:28 PM PDT

Hey guys. srry if this post sound a little rusty but i'm no a native speaker, plus is mu first time in reddit. so this is the case, im from argentina and a found a great price for a mi A1 but i can't test the app that tells you if it is, or not, fake (fuck, i don'r remember it's name).

so, there are some little hints that tells you if the smarthphone is good to go? like in the box (which i opened [that sound weird, im not sure if it's the correct tense]), and it looked (again with the f*** vervs) right. something that i noticed is the turn on animation, it was not that cool transition that looks like a sunblind. was like nothing, just the logo that appear after that with the white back.

please, would all of you, owners of "mi A1", tell me if its normal. i really like the phone and i really want it

    MiHome scenes and automation queries!

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 05:18 PM PDT

    Hi.

I have recently jumped on the MiHome ecosystem bandwagon but I seem to be having trouble setting automated scenes with specific requirements.

    1. I want a scene to run (for example lights to turn on when a door opens) but I only want this to activate in the evening between the hours of 17:00 and 6am the next morning. (ie. Not during daylight hours) is this possible?

    2. Is it possible to check the condition of a door (if the door is open or closed) when activating a scene? For example, I want my AC to turn on at 11:30 but only if the balcony door is closed and not open.

Any help on these issues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Did I just broke my brand new ultrabook? Should I be able to charge Xiaomi Air 13 using PC's usb 3.0 port?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 04:56 PM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, seeing the posts on this sub are mostly about mobile phones, so if it's not, please excuse me and point me in the right direction.

I recently bought Xiaomi Air 13 2017 model as a replacement for my ageing Asus notebook.

I ordered it off Gearbest, some EU warehouse, but it came without a US/China>EU adapter, even if one was listed in my order (as my country uses type C/E plug). Oh well.

I tried charging it with a regular USB type C cable off a USB 3.0 port on my PC but it didn't work (the charging indicator was not lighting up). So I borrowed my sister's Macbook adapter and charged the device using it and that worked. I also did a fresh install of the Win 10 (so I could have a language that I can actually understand), using a fresh W10 pro key.

I ordered a couple of cheap ass dongles off ebay and returned the adapter I was using to my sis.

I used the laptop for a few hours over the next couple of days, mostly for testing purposes (it's not my daily driver, just a spare machine) till the battery ran out. Then I tried charging it using the new dongle. It didn't work, the device won't turn on at all even if I'm pretty sure it should have some charge left (it was showing like 5% when I turned if off the last time). I tried the other two dongles I got, no success.

So either I was very unlucky and got 3 broken dongles, the first one was broken and fried the power brick or I got a faulty adapter. Or I fried the power section on the mobo or even something else within the machine with the borked dongle (however that could happen), but I would rather not follow this line of thought till I'm sure that's what happened.

I can't borrow my sister's adapter again for a while as she is out of town and kinda needs it.

At that point I figured I can try charging it with USB type C again. I tried:

    • 3 different PCs (including one with a Z370 mobo that has a 3.1 USB port supporting Quick Charge) with a regular USB>USB type C cable.

    • Xiaomi Mi5 Quick Charge adapter,

    • One Plus 3T Dash Charge adapter,

    without any improvement.

I'm wondering whether I should order a new, higher quality converter, a new power adapter or just RMA the whole thing and hope for the best (even if I probably voided the warranty by installing a different OS, because I've read it somewhere that you are not supposed to do that. Of course not after I already did that. And I wouldn't buy it in the first place if I knew it's going to void the warranty).

I tried googling around whether charging the laptop with anything else but the original (or - evidently - Macbook's) adapter is even possible, but all I found is inconclusive. So, can anyone confirm or deny with certainty it's possible?

I'm about to buy a Mix 2, anything that should I know?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 10:56 AM PDT

I'm not a smartphone expert and I'm that type of guy that thinks that buying a 800$+ phone is just throwing your money off for some irrelevant features that you won't be using. Anyways, my phone history has been 2 Blackberries, 2 iPhones aaaand, that's it, so I want to experience what opening anything on my phone without worrying about the battery means.

After a long research I ended up with the Mix 2 which imo is the best for the price, long battery, good cpu and it's beautiful. I can get it now for 350€ so, should I? Is there any option that I might not have considerated? Budget is >400€.

    YeeLight Wi-Fi Bulb initial setup

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 04:41 PM PDT

So I've seen in various places that some versions work with 110v setting them up, and other posts say you have to set them up with 220v before they'll work in 110v?

Is there any way to tell which bulb is which? Box says model is YLDP02YL

If I buy the Global version of the Redmi 5 Plus do I need to worry about OTA updates bricking it?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2018 03:32 PM PDT

There are dozens of threads online about people having had their Redmi 5 Plus' get bricked due to an OTA update. However, it seems what caused all this bricking to happen is resellers were selling Chinese versions of the phone with a fake Global rom (9.2.0.2?) so when the device tried to update, it got bricked. Am I right about this or do I need to worry about OTA updates with an official Global version too?
