This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Is it worth getting a highly efficient PSU?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 02:32 AM PDT

A 450W Corsair PSU will cost me around $40 . It has no silver, platinum or gold efficiency which is mentioned on the high end PSU s. And these "high end" PSU s will cost me double the amount for the 40$ corsair one. Is it worth it to pay $50 more for a PSu with Platinum efficiency or no?(Only these prices are available from where I live). So, Should i go for the $40 " Corsair VS450 450-Watt Power Supply" or should I pay double the price for the "high end" ones?

[Build Complete] Define R6 Plex/Media Server PC

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 06:31 AM PDT

    Completed Build Gallery/Pics

    Previous Partial Build Post

Finally finished my build! It's mainly a server for all the media players around the house (ShieldTV, AppleTV4K, Mibox, etc) with the occasional gaming. Came from an i5-3550 which served me a good 4 to 5 years. I basically upgraded the cpu, mobo, ram, psu & case and I retained and moved over all my hdds, ssd and graphics card. I went for a single system rather than 2 separate units since I figured both PCs will probably be turned on too most of the time and having a single all-in-one would be more efficient (in the long run?) lol At the very least, it would be easier to maintain one rather than having to always check on 2 systems :)

Complete Build List is as follows:

    • CPU: i7-8700K
    • Cooler: Cryorig H5 Ultimate
    • Mobo: ASUS Strix Z370-E
    • RAM: 2x8gb Corsair Vengeance LPX (White); 2x8gb Corsair Vengeance RGB (Black)
    • Video Card: ASUS GT960 Turbo
    • PSU: Corsair HX750 Platinum Modular
    • Case: Fractal Design Define R6
    • Case Fans: 3x Noctua NF-P14s Redux
    • Others 1: Dell PERC H310 Card with Noctua 40mm Fan (3D Printed Holder)
    • Others 2: CableMod Addressable RGB Strip (30cm)
    • Storage 1: 1x 1TB Samsung 850 Evo SSD - Win10 Pro OS
    • Storage 2: 1x 5TB WD Black HDD - Data Drive
    • Storage 3: 4x 8TB WD Red HDD - Movies / TV Series / Archives / SnapRaid Parity Drive
    • Storage 4: 1x 4TB WD Red HDD - Download Drive
    • Storage 5: 1x 4TB Seagate ST4000DM005 - Backup Drive
    • Storage 6: 1x 8TB WD Red & 2x 8TB WD White - Spares

    Big big thanks to:

    • /r/buildapc - for all the inspiration and build ideas and product opinions/reviews
    • /r/DataHoarder - for all the tips on both the hardware & software aspects and specially for letting me know everytime there's a bb easystore sale :)
    • /r/buildapcsales - for the deals I got on the cpu/mobo/ram and other misc parts
    • /r/hardwareswap - where I got the 6 additional hdd trays for the Define R6
    • /u/gstacks13 - for helping on the 3D Printed Fan Holder
    • REDDIT - which made all of this possible! :)

Really really happy with the build, no regrets so far! Hoping that this'll last me the next 5 years lol Hit me up for any questions and I'll try my best to help the same way I've received help the past few months as I was building this rig. Hoping that this'll help anyone planning to build a similar system as well!

UPDATE - Build for my son for straight A's

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 01:21 PM PDT

This is an updated post from the previous help you guys provided over Christmas. My son has straight A's and as a present for all his hard work, we are building a computer together. You can find the original post here. https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/7evya5/building_a_pc_for_my_son_using_black_friday_deals/

I have purchased all the items on the part picker list that I put below, but have still yet to get a CPU or Monitor. I know I want a Ryzen, but need help deciding which one to go with now that the new series is out.

He will be doing primarily gaming but has a strong interest in 3d design and modeling as well as Mechanical Engineering or Architecture so some CAD software may be purchased in the future.

This forum was incredible the first time around helping me pick parts, so I am eager to hear what you guys think we should go with for monitor and CPU.

Evo hyper 212 screws won't reach

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 08:12 AM PDT

Just delidded my 7700k put some cryonaut(edit: conductonaut not kryonaut) under it and left it floating instead of glueing. When the time came to install the new cooler half of the screws are way to high to screw in. https://imgur.com/gallery/qaUmdMa

Edit: fixed it, it ended up being the plastic spacers as someone mentioned below. Once I put that in it all fit perfectly. Thanks for the advice!

    1050ti stopping me?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 04:00 AM PDT

I have a MSI 1050ti x gaming 4g edition. And I was looking around for an intel processor and I was looking at the i5-8600k and was told not to pair it with a 1050ti? Would this build not be ok? Any reasons why?

Need help with picking a 144hz monitor for gaming

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 05:47 AM PDT

(you can skip to the end for the real reason of my post the first part is the backstory of my pc)

Last year i build my first pc with the help of a friend.

I told him what my budget was and together (me mostly just saying what i wanted my pc to be capable of and him advising what to pick). We finally finished picking the parts for the desktop.

The only thing that i had to do now was pick the mouse, keyboard and monitors. The mouse was easy i could use my old mouse (logitech G502). While choosing a keyboard i noticed that i was almost at my budget and i still needed to pick 2 monitors. Now you are thinking why i need 2 monitors well let me tell you.

I have a laptop and bought a 2nd monitor for it. It opened a whole new world for me and going back to a 1 monitor setup is like going from playing a shooter with a mouse back to playing a shooter with a touch pad. So I picked a keyboard that wasn't expensive and good at the same time (the Corsair K70 Lux).

I was left with the dilemma of almost hitting my budget and still needed to pick 2 monitors. My friend told me stick to your budget and you can always buy a monitor next time. So i choose the asus VX229H because i already had that monitor as a 2nd monitor for my laptop and i really liked it.

    !Questions!

Now I need advice for picking a 144hz gaming monitor.

Which monitor do you guys advice?

I would also like to know should I get a G-sync monitor or is just 144hz without G-sync good enough?

My budget is around €500 (euros living in the Netherlands)

    My gear:

    Corsair HX850 V2

Corsair K70 LUX - Red LED (Qwerty US, Cherry Red)

    Fractal Design Define R5 Black

    G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32GB DDR4 32GB DDR4 3600MHz geheugenmodule (memorymodule)

Playing steam games from an external hard drive

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 09:15 PM PDT

I am planning on getting another hard drive so I can install more games, however my home internet is complete trash, it is literally faster for me to take the 2 hour commute to uni, sit around for the 10 minutes it will take to download a 20gb game and come home, than to download it at home.

So I am planning to buy an external hard drive and installing games on it during lectures, would this be a good idea? I don't mind if it takes more time to load games installed on the external drive, as long as I can play them then I am happy.

I put my RAM in the wrong slots, and now I can't fix it.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:17 AM PDT

Hey guys, so I finished my build around 6 months ago. I put my RAM in B1/B2, and of course, I know it's affecting my performance. When I moved a stick to A2, my PC only recognized 8GB out of 16GB on BIOS and windows.

    10gb ram but only 3.96gb usable in win10 64bit

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 11:44 AM PDT

Hello, I had to troubleshoot my brothers pc, before I gave it to him it worked flawlessly. So here's the thing: the pc showed only 6gb out of 10 and after swapping ram sticks and stuff I finally managed to make all of them show up, but it says that only 3.96 are usable. Maximum memory box is unchecked. Memory remapping feature is enabled. Memtest86 passed. I'm running out of ideas, thought of coming here to see if someone could help me out. Solved: the ram sticks were in the following order x1 y1 and x1 y2 , someone said to reseat them, but I swapped them out completely and put them in this order: x2 y2 and x1 y1. For some reason it didn't work the other way around

Need help for machine learning rig

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:18 AM PDT

Hi, We are planning to build a new rig for our research group. It would be used for Machine Learning/ Deep Learning projects. We deal with text, image, and video data.

We want our system to have 4 Nvidia GTX1080Ti. No SLI, so multiple students can use it at a time(one student can use 1 GPU).

Apart from this, we want to have:-

RAM - 64 GB (we may increase it to 128GB if we would have budget left after getting everything else)

A 512GB SSD for OS and current project.

    A 4TB HDD for long-term storage

What CPU and Motherboard do you guys suggest for optimal performance?

How many PCIe lanes my CPU should support so it does not become a bottleneck for my GPUs?

Do we need a dual CPU setup or a single CPU would do the job?

Anything else we should keep in mind while building this rig?

    Additional information:-

    1. Budget & Location - We are from INDIA and have a budget of 5,00,000 INR.

    2. Aim - Machine Learning/ Deep Learning projects

    3. Monitors and Peripherals - No monitors and peripherals, it would be a remote access rig.

    4. OS - Ubuntu

    Thank you

RAM compatibility questions for Ryzen 2600

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 11:40 AM PDT

So I'm currently building a Ryzen 2600 computer. I bought some RAM off Ebay on a great deal(reputable seller according to the seller info) But I'm afraid it won't be compatible with my processor. I have yet to buy a motherboard, but I'm looking for ones that are compatible with said RAM, but the only one is an ASUS ROG STRIX B350, which has horrible reviews on Newegg

    Here's a link to the RAM https://www.ebay.com/itm/BRAND-NEW-CORSAIR-Vengeance-RGB-16GB-2-x-8GB-DDR4-3000-PC4-24000/292131435976?hash=item440463f5c8:g:Y6gAAOSwPh5ZKXSM

What I want to know is if I'm screwed. I should have done my research but I got giddy when I saw 16gb of ram for around 170ish with RGB

decided to switch gpu, now pc isn't even powering up.

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 05:29 AM PDT

    i7 7700k, 16gb ddr4 corsair dominator platinum, 3 140mm pwm fans, 2 3.5" drives, 1 ssd, 1 m.2, gigabyte z270 gaming 8, the old 280mm kraken, 750w evga g3, and an asus wifi card.

so for a while i've had my evga 970 ftw 4gb running in this build. tonight I bought a 1070 ftw, and put it in the system. it flat out refused to power up.

    fast forward over 3 hours of swapping out parts between mine and my mate's pc, we've confirmed that the 1070 works fine, and my g3 works fine. here's what we've tried so far;

    • resetting the cmos using button
    • re-seating the ram
    • taking out the cmos button
    • swapping out different power supplies
    • going between the old and new gpu
    • powering up by pressing both the case switch and mobo switch
    • we've gone barebones, so just ram, cpu, mobo, m.2.

here's the weird thing. the rgb block for the kraken cooler is lit up, as well as the power button directly on the mobo, while we have any of the 3 power supplies plugged in.

Looks like I'll be posting a few more times until some of these are bought. This time for my 10 year old Nephew!

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 11:08 AM PDT

    Build Help (almost ready):

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Ahuh.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Nephew's first gaming rig. Something he can learn and build on, something he can play with. Something he can study with. Not to demanding of his needs, but knows how to build when his needs increase.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I want to play Overwatch, Borderlands, maybe pubg (I know. Optimization is shit on that game), Minecraft and League with him on the lowest settings possible. I just care that it runs.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

A little bit of money. That's why I started this on a decent APU.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

US. In-Store deals like Microcenter are also options even though the closest one is 6 hours away.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Provide any additional details you wish below.

The kid doesn't need a lot. Nor does he need the best. Even though the ram might not be taking advantage of his gear, it's what's cheapest right now, and I have a month to buy the RAM, but a few days to buy the other cheap parts. If the price is better for a smaller case, I can consider a smaller mobo (the ASRock A320M is 47.30), and smaller is better here, but my biggest concern is PC Partpicker's compatibility marker. It's telling me the AB350 isn't compatible at all here.

It may pay to hold off a bit longer on those GPU purchases.

Use 1 or 2 PCIE Power Cables for GTX 1070?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 01:32 PM PDT

My EVGA 850W BQ came with a pci-e power cable that's a 6+2 pin with a 6pin coming out the side.

This is the same as my GTX 1070's requirements...however, should I use the single cable for both or plug in a second PCI-E VGA power cable and use the 6 pin off it and the 6+2 from the original cable?

My last power supply I used 2 separate cables. Is it okay to just use the one or will it not get enough power?

It's a GTX 1070 Gaming Z from MSI that is overclocked

To me it would make more sense to distribute the load across two cables rather than a single one that branches off....but idk 100% what to do and I don't want to fry anything

Edit- the TDP is listed as 180 Watts

I want to build a PC (Warning! It's a long post.)

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 01:31 PM PDT

Sorry, this is gonna be a long post.

About a week ago, I helped a friend put a PC together (just screwing things, connecting things to the motherboard, etc.), and actually had a lot of fun. I really enjoy building things, but building a PC was always kinda intimidating. This had shed a new light on it and recently, I've been looking at parts and whatnot. However, I have no restrictions and little self-control and even less experience.

First off, I have never owned a desktop. I've always used laptops for school and games. In fact, my family has never owned a desktop. The only time I have ever touched anything other than the keyboard or power button of a desktop was this last week.

Secondly, I have no budget. My mother started a college fund for me when I was in primary school. She passed in high school and my dad forgot about the college fund. It wasn't until I ran out of money for tuition during my second year that I found out about the fund. However, because I go to a state college, a lot of the funds will be wasted (even if I go to grad school). My financial advisor suggested buying a nice desktop. I have no budget because I have no idea how much parts are.

Third, I have no self-control. As I said I've been looking at parts. And even threw together (on a spreadsheet) the most expensive parts I could find just for fun. I did not know there was an i9 processor, although it's $2000. Anyways, around 10PM last night, I found out Amazon had a one day tech sale. They had the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X on sale for $720. I looked at a few websites and it seemed like a good processor. I bought it.

I fucked up. I went to bed pretty happy, but I woke up a couple hours ago and found this subreddit. I started reading and it seems that buying it was a huge mistake since it's so expensive and unnecessary. I was planning on buying almost $4000 worth of parts, but I'm starting to rethink things and need advice.

Here's a link to a list of parts I've been looking at. The items that are checked are currently part of my planned build. The list on the right is what I have bought so far.
