    Weekly "anything goes" thread!

Here's your chance to talk about whatever!

Although if you're thinking about getting feedback on an app, you should wait until tomorrow's App Feedback thread.

Remember that while you can talk about any topic, being a jerk is still not allowed.

My [draft] architecture for small projects

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:18 PM PDT

The main goal: as usual, code modularity, scalability, easy to maintain, test friendly and so on…

I tried to follow MVP, Clean Architecture, Android Architecture Components (from Google). Use MVP, Dagger, etc for small projects is over-engineering. In addition, MVP describes well only UI/Views layers.

This is an attempt to implement a minimal architecture for small projects. Which can be understood by a single developer.

It's not the perfect code, it's not proof of concept. It's draft boilerplate code for me.

    Feedback is very welcome.

    GitHub link.

    Using:

    • Retrofit2
    • RxJava2 (it's much better and clearer than LiveData)
    • Room (Android Architecture Components)
    • ViewModel (Android Architecture Components)

    Layers:

    • UI (Activities, Fragments)
    • ViewModel - UI state holder, UI Rx subscription holder
    • Interactor/Use Case (not implemented here)
    • Repository - Facade for all data sources
    • Observable Data sources : REST API, Database cache

    What's a nice open source multi-module app?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 07:35 PM PDT

I'm not talking about just data/model/business/ui logic modularization. I keep hearing about these projects and people proclaiming that they have "dozens" of modules so their builds are nearly instantaneous.

I've never seen one. How do you even modularize so much? Are there any good open source examples?

    Thoughts on cross platform options?

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 05:27 AM PDT

    Hello

I'm an aspiring mobile developer. And after doing a bit of research in things I don't fully comprehend, I decided i liked xamarin. Mainly due to the fact that it has so many platform options and that it's fully established. However, it seems a bit hard to start with a cross platform framework/software straight off and it might be easier to learn a specific platform first then go onto the cross option. That's what I'm currently doing with android development.

I justed wanted to see what you guys think about the cross platform options that are currently available? The two main ones I was looking at were xamarin and react native. React seems to be the way most people go due to JavaScript and since I'm new to the field of programming, that doesn't pose as an advantage to me anyway.

Something that caught my attention and might cause me to rethink my initial choice is flutter. It seems easier and backed by Google which is big on its own.

    What do you think?

Seeking assistance on custom Android OS revision / package

    Posted: 27 Apr 2018 09:08 AM PDT

I'm looking to put together a custom Android OS packaged together with the APKs we need to support a custom launcher set to default at start up.

Is there anyone who would be able to assist with this by chance? I've tried working with my manufacturer but there is a large communication gap, hoping to find someone outside my manufacturer who may be of assistance.

Please respond below or PM me if you could be of assistance or if you have any references to someone who could help, thanks for reading!

Is this laptop suitable for Android Dev?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2018 04:37 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm in the market for a new 2-in-1 laptop and will be starting to learn Android development in the next 1-2 weeks. I'm having a very hard time choosing between a few models. But there one in particular I don't feel like I understand enough to make a decision:

    https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-xps-2-in-1-13-3-qhd-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-512gb-solid-state-drive-silver/5709803.p?skuId=5709803

So that laptop is a dual core i7... is that suitable enough for Android Studio? Also, I've found some confusing information... it seems this model doesn't have four physical cores, but mimics a quad core? So is it enough?

There are a few other 2-in-1's I've looked at but none really seem to compare to the XPS in terms of feel for me; the only other ones I feel like trying are the i7 Pixelbook or the Lenovo Yoga 920 below:
