External hard drive not showing up when plugged in, but does when plugged in on boot. Posted: 26 Apr 2018 11:12 AM PDT This issue has stumped me for the past few months, mostly b/c of how strange the conditions are. So, my WD 2TB external hard drive, as it is now, can only be recognized by my pc when it is plugged in before the pc is turned on, and all the files are perfectly accessible and all is well. However, if i unplug it and plug it back in after it is recognized, or if it was not plugged in on boot, the drive is not recognized in any fashion by windows. No, usb connection sound, not in file explorer, device manager(it does show if you view the hidden devices though, but it is treated as disconnected) or disk manager. The drive itself has power though, and I can feel the it spinning, so it shouldn't be a hardware issue on the drive end. Another thing is the drive works with no issue on my laptop. One thing that might be causing it is that my desktop has 2 internal SSD's,one for boot and one for storage, so I tried changing the drive letter but the issue still persists. As for what else I have tried, updating drivers for the USB controllers and the drive itself have not worked. Many of the 'solutions' I have found are null b/c the drive doesn't show up in device or disk manager. EDIT: I should mention the drive works with no issue on my Linux partition on the same machine, doesn't matter if it's plugged in on boot or not. EDIT 2: Fixed! If this is not the strangest fix I've done I don't know what is, apparently all I had to do was right click the recycle bin-->properties, go to the drive, and select 'Don't move files to the recycle bin'. Thanks to everyone for the help. Edit 3: apparently not... and I learned that it shows up as local disk in the properties of the drive, which is probably why it doesn't show up when its not connected to boot [link] [comments] |
Two issues with my PC I'd appreciate some help with Posted: 27 Apr 2018 02:55 AM PDT Firstly, I have consistent incredibly high (90%+) disk usage. The thing is, in task manager, the process using the most is only ever around 1-3MB/s. https://i.imgur.com/5QVidKN.png Secondly, whenever I turn on my PC, the stickynotes application runs. I don't have it enabled in the startup tab on task manager, and I have tried a few recommended registry tweaks to no avail. I can't even uninstall it because Microsoft, so is there any fix for this either? Gets annoying closing it each time. My hard drive is: WD Blue 1TB (WD10EZEX) [link] [comments] |
I accidentally renamed hundreds of files for an event I have in less than 24 hours! Posted: 27 Apr 2018 02:55 AM PDT I've been up all night putting together karaoke songs for a karaoke night I'm hosting tomorrow. I was trying to edit a title and somehow I renamed all 570 files. I hit control z but it only fixed some. I did it multiple times. No change. These need to be ready in like 14 hours and I need to go to bed. I've been working so hard on this event. How are people going to be able to pick songs to sing if I don't know what file is what? Can anyone help me? Am I screwed? [link] [comments] |

How to get google voice and verify phone in craiglist from outside US? Posted: 26 Apr 2018 11:19 PM PDT Hi, I am from outside the US and I'm trying to get a google voice number and craiglist phone verification but I am not able to. I used TextMe, 2ndLine, TextFree apps to get a US phone number and when I am putting that into google voice for forwarding, its not accepting and when I am putting that into Craiglist, it just denies. How do I actually get a google voice number and craigslist phone verified? I'm using VPN for both google voice and craiglist but cant go past them. Any tips? [link] [comments] |
Touchpad disabled while typing Posted: 26 Apr 2018 09:44 PM PDT I realized today that my laptop touchpad disables while I'm typing. Now I had dealt with this before and knew that it was just a simple setting so I proceeded to search for the said setting. I've checked the windows 10 touchpad settings after a bit of google searching pointed me towards "touchpad delay" but found nothing of the sort. Next, I checked the synaptic touchpad settings and found something called "SmartSense". There was a scroll bar that had the text "tapping disabled time after keystroke" and "point disabled time after keystroke". Thinking I had finally found my salvation, I turned the scrolls bars next to them all the way to "off". I applied the settings and restarted my laptop to be sure but to my disappointment, nothing had changed. I proceeded to uninstall and reinstall the driver, reapply all the settings I had changed to try and fix the problem the first time but still, nothing. I just want to play WoW on my laptop send help. Here's a link to pictures of my specs, the synaptic settings I found, what my windows 10 touchpad settings looks like and the windows 10 mouse settings: https://imgur.com/a/BgiYgJt [link] [comments] |

Need help updating bios or figuring out how to overclock with x79 board. Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:39 AM PDT I bought a x79 board for a 3930k back in January. The default bios doesn't allow for overclocking as far as I can tell. I want to know if it's possible to update the bios to allow for overclocking for this board. I'm not completely unfamiliar with overclocking, but I've never flashed a bios and would rather not risk a $100+ brick. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I can give more information if requested. Edit: I've figured out how to change the multipliers. So I changed them to 43 to see if I could break 4 GHz. However, anything above 39 seems to not register, and it defaults to 3.9 GHz under load. Is there anything else I can do? [link] [comments] |
Red square a artifact crash whenever I play games. PLEASE HELP Posted: 27 Apr 2018 04:24 AM PDT Hi guys, so I brought a prebuilt PC 3 days ago: On day 1: Working perfectly On day 2: Starts to often have colorful square artifacts then unreal engine crash on Fortnite and Rocket League On day 3 (Today): ALWAYS have color square artifacts and a freeze on ALL GAMES and often out of nowhere. PLEASE HELP ME! Btw I've already tried updating my drivers. Why could this be happening? I can't even play low requirement games! [link] [comments] |
Is using a vacuum cleaner to clean fans bad for them? Posted: 26 Apr 2018 07:30 PM PDT Not sure this is the correct sub. Let's say my computer is full of dust. If I use the vacuum on the fans, they will turn the opposite way. Won't this "turning the opposite way" create a current in the opposite direction and potentially damage my components? I'm sure the power supply is made to handle this on case fans, but what about GPU or CPU fans? Is it better to "hold" the fans in place so they don't turn? [link] [comments] |
Laptop shoots up to 80 degees celsius when using chrome Posted: 27 Apr 2018 04:07 AM PDT So, I was just playing some good old nfs, when teh temps went up t 75. I closed the game, and let the pc lie untouched for a few minutes. Temps didnt go down. I started to use chrome and noticed that the cpu wont go below 85 Celsius [link] [comments] |
Something weird is happening, is my graphic card malfunctioning? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:10 AM PDT My specs: Win 10 i7-7700 non-k GTX 1080 G1 Gaming 32GB RAM Not OC whatsoever. Everything's temp are stable at ~50 Celsius most of the time (I'm in a tropical country and it's naturally very hot here. Currently in an AC room but still... 20-30 Celsius is just impossible) Malwarebytes, Avast AV are being run. rKill results are all clean. So, I do not tinker around, or go to suspicious links, general stuff. But lately I'm having some problems:
This was briefly solved by uninstalling and reinstalling nVidia's driver. But now it's back. Games just randomly freeze. I just had a freeze on Dota 2, which shouldn't be out of my VGA league at all. I must note that this happened again after I installed the newest driver last night. Currently reinstalling it but I wonder if it is the problem. If so, is it something wrong from nVidia, or something in my computer is messing around and made the driver not running as intended? I hope I don't have to bring my PC to the IT shop :( Other problem:
Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Ping Spikes for 4 months now - I tried everything Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:46 AM PDT Hello! I'll expand this post as I make progress with anyone who wishes to discuss/help me with this. So if I'm not specific enough please let me know and I'll update this. In early January I woke up on a Saturday and noticed these disgusting ping spikes, I always had an average of 30-40 ping but it jumped to absurd 2000 values.. Here are the things that I've already done to solve the issue, even though it did not:
Now none of these solved shit. I called my ISP, they sent a guy who told me that when this happens, they are forced to go through a sequence and certain steps need to be done before examining the facility. He says he needs to make sure that the problem isn't here, but at their place. So he told me they had this a few years ago, and after a ton of work it was just some optical drive that was dusty.. that didn't inspire confidence. He also said that a lot of other users from my ISP (Which is UPC) have this problem.. now my package is 500mb/d and 50mb/up. After a month of just calling them every single day, they tried marking my problem as "Resolved" and I got an email saying "How happy are you with our service?" They restarted the entire thing, so the guy had to check everything again, that was another month. After that, I stumbled upon a thread (It's in Hungarian so I won't link it, yes I live in Hungary) that went specifically in detail about these ConnectBoxes that the ISP gives us. It's a router and a modem at the same time. However users of this box have experienced ping spikes and it's most likely the device's fault. But when I told them about it, they refused to acknowledge it (I suppose they'd have to swap out too many boxes once they did) and just told me that they are working on the network now since the problem I have is marked as a problem with THEIR facility and NOT my house, so I can't even ask for a new box now.. I tried several times. Then I considered the options of switching to another ISP. The only other ISP in my area that can provide for me, only has a 30mb/d 5mb/up speed, but I tried it. The speed was awful, 10mb/d and 0.7/up... yeah, but the ping was good. It was consistently 18-22, sometimes it jumped up to 300 though JUST like the previous one, but it was not as frequent. I couldn't play well with it, (I play Overwatch) because of the internet speed things kept lagging (Everything would freeze for a second). So what I thought would help is bridging. I merged the two connections and I got a 250mb download, however my upload was still 0.7mb which is wrong. Anyways, my ping was... okay, at this point. I still noticed spikes.. but they were less frequent and smaller values. However, since I completely wanted to switch to the ISP with better ping I asked for a "Booster" option that makes my download speed go up from 30 to 70 and my upload speed from 5 to 15 mb. They did that today, but it doesn't work, at all. I called them they'll look into it. Now some other things, I heard some people had wrong cabels? But I have these spikes on my laptop as well, even if I use different cables. Also another REALLY upsetting thing is that ever since they installed the "Booster" option, they SWAPPED the router to another one.. I'm not sure if this is like the ConnectBox too, with a built-in Modem/Router combo, but THAT made my ping spikes come back. So basically if I'm on a higher package, they will swap my routers and my ping goes up, but I can't downgrade to a lower package because A) I have a contract with UPC that doesn't let me do so, for another year B) The other ISP's internet is too slow, and by that I mean the upload speed. If that would be fixed it could work but it doesn't. So I'm asking you if you know how to
I'm sorry for the unorganized long wall of text I'm just really frustrated at the moment because I've put so much money and energy into solving this problem and it's still malfunctioning. Let me know if you need any new info. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:27 AM PDT Yesterday I went to turn my laptop on, it flashed green lights like it normally does and then nothing happened. I've taken out the battery and plugging it in and that doesn't work. I've owned it for 4-5 years now and its gone through a lot, I also ruined the battery really early on cuz I left it plugged in all the time whilst playing games, therefore forcing me to keep it plugged in cuz the battery just wouldn't last after that. I'm not bothered if it is dead, but I would like to know if there is anything I can do that might possibly revive it. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Installing windows on m.2 nvme Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:27 AM PDT Ok so i've been pulling my hair out at this for a few hours I have a Lenovo Legion Y520 and decided to add an nvme ssd in there (intel 600p 500gb) and wanted to make it the primary windows drive to speed things up. Problem i can't get windows to boot on it. The bios detects the hard disk (i have enabled AHCI) however under "boot" i can't find the ssd unless i'm in Legacy mode, which makes the ssd unbootable. When installing from usb i can install windows 10 onto the drive but when it reboots after initial installation i get a "media test failure check cable" message. Yet the device is still detected in the bios Pls help i'm lost and slowly descending into madness (I also can't find any csm mode in my bios) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Apr 2018 11:37 PM PDT I have a Surface Pro 2017 i5/8gb/256 and pretty much every Windows Store app that I use has to be clicked on, closed on splash (because it goes no further) then opened again. I'm not quite sure what to make of it. Any ideas how I can make this annoying problem go away? Affects apps like Mail, OneNote, Settings, etc. The culprits seem to be mostly Microsoft made apps but can happen to Netflix and others too. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Apr 2018 11:34 PM PDT So just sitting on idle i'm getting about 45-50°C on my GPU. It's a HD 6450 btw, is this normal or do i have to do something about this? [link] [comments] |
Laptop Freezing for a Split Second Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:16 AM PDT Hi, so I just got a new laptop and I noticed that at random intervals, my laptop (monitor?) just freezes for a split second and it's really annoying. Surprisingly it actually doesn't happen when I'm gaming, so could it be related to GPU? Any advice? EDIT: When I'm watching videos and it does freeze, the video speeds up to catch up. I just got some 3-pin chassis fans. They're running at 100% speed and I REALLY don't want them to. Posted: 26 Apr 2018 09:16 PM PDT I just got a few coraisr 3-pin fans. Two for the front, one for the rear. My motherboard (Asus P8H67-M Pro) Has a CPU 4-pin header, a rear 4-pin chassis header, and a front 3-pin chassis header. I bought a 4 way fan splitter so I could power all of my fans, but no matter where I plug them into, they're constantly running at 100% speed and it's way too loud for me. I'd really appreciate any advice and I wouldn't be opposed to spending a little more money, but I don't want to have to return the fans and I really don't want to let them run at full speed constantly. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Apr 2018 11:25 PM PDT Computer runs fine up until I remove the boot USB, acts perfectly normal. I think I installed the MBR to the USB and set a reference on my C drive, I did it all through CMD off of a few commands. I copied the contents of the drive onto what I thought was the MBR of the drive, but I believe I may have just set it as a reference. How can I fix this and get the MBR on the C Drive instead of a USB. [link] [comments] |
