What, if any, common functionalities does Linux lack compared to Windows? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:33 AM PDT Back in the dark days 15-20 years ago, making Linux your primary OS required commitment, man. Sure, there were equivalent programs for a lot of things, but what, 10-15% of things the typical user would do on Linux just wasn't practically possible. These days the notion of a Linux-based gaming desktop isn't an absurd joke (a friend has one), so things have definitely changed. Linux has more to offer the non-power-user, and there's more support for it as well. But I'm considering ditching Windows for Linux, and it would be stupid not to check to see how things stand today. Posted: 27 Apr 2018 01:21 PM PDT Can someone explain what wine does? I get that it runs windows applications, but it seems like every time I use wine it doesn't actually run the application. For example, I tried using rufus to make a bootable USB, but it wouldn't even pull up the GUI! Other times I've used wine, it just ended up not working or requiring tons of other packages or programs to run. What am I doing wrong and how can I better use Wine? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
If youre installing via USB, put your boot drive into a USB 2.0 port, rather than a 3.0. Posted: 27 Apr 2018 04:07 AM PDT Just wasted hours trying to install Linux for the first time in years, and that was the solution to all my problems. [link] [comments] |
Is live usb performance indicative of actual installed performance? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 10:04 AM PDT I am thinking of switching to Ubuntu but performance is abysmal on live usb. I am using a usb 2.0 drive so that might be the bottleneck but I have a Lenovo t430 with an SSD and 8gb of ram [link] [comments] |

Confused about shutdown protocol Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:42 AM PDT Why does shutting down from the terminal need the root password but doing it from the menu not? Shouldn't both need it? Or do they use different commands? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Apr 2018 10:24 AM PDT My mobo has 8 SATA ports with 6 on one controller (Intel) and 2 on another (ASMedia AMS1062). I just installed Ubuntu 18 and can see both controllers in the output of lspci but the 2 on the ASMedia controller don't show up in /dev/discs/. They do show up in the bios boot options though. Could they be somewhere else or do I need drivers or something? [link] [comments] |
Unified Messaging like MacOS "Messages?" Posted: 27 Apr 2018 01:03 PM PDT Is there a unified messaging solution that I can send SMS/MMS and take calls from an Android or BB10 device over my Linux installation? I think Pushbullet is a Firefox solution and Blackberry Blend doesn't work through WINE (AFAIK); is there a better solution for this? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:59 PM PDT Hello, I am using Ubuntu 17.10 right now. Even though, 18.04 LTS is released I cannot do release upgrade. It says my system is up-to-date. I have tried and separately. I also tried Software Updater. But every time it said it is up-to-date. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Installing Mint on a partition - how much space do I need? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 12:48 PM PDT I'm going to install Mint on a partition on my Windows 10 computer. I can probably designate up to 200g for it, but how much do I actually need? I want enough room for storage. Do I need a special program to run both Mint and Windows 10 on the same computer if I have a partition? I don't want to run it from a thumb drive, because I tend to lose thumb drives. Posted: 27 Apr 2018 07:49 AM PDT I'm new to Linux and wanted to play around with it, so I used Unetbootin to create a live boot Linux Mint USB. It was being glitchy so I unplugged it and expected it to shut down (like my Tails USB does) but even after unplugging the USB, Linux Mint was still running like normal. I didn't install it to the hard drive. When I shut down the computer, it rebooted in my normal Windows 10. Any explanation? [link] [comments] |
Can I tar / and /boot, such that I can completely restore my installation? Posted: 27 Apr 2018 03:24 AM PDT What flags or caveats should I be aware of? I've got Ubuntu on this machine, but want give Antergos a try. Would like to be able to restore my Ubuntu installation, if necessary. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 27 Apr 2018 09:34 AM PDT I made a tar backup of sda1 and want to restore to a new disk and make the system bootable. EDITI found the answer here: http://www.partimage.org/manual/Backing-up-the-partition-table/ saves the mbr saves the partition table [link] [comments] |

Posted: 27 Apr 2018 08:26 AM PDT So after about a week of messing and stressing (a lot) I went back to Windows 7 and had my system setup in 4 hours (resolution as I wanted etc) Now I've learnt a lot I didn't jump in the deep end I submarined to the bottom of the ocean with only a snorkel) I'm a true novice but I do want to pull away from Windows but I want to do it gradually and learn as I go I'm thinking off practising on VirtualBox and then leaning towards a dual boot and eventually removing Windows of my machine once I've learnt enough and feel comfortable Anyone have any tips/advice?? Getting crypt(?) to use Colemak instead of QWERTY Posted: 27 Apr 2018 08:21 AM PDT
I've actually played around with different Ubuntu flavors before deciding on Budgie, and it was always a 50/50 chance whether or not it'd use Colemak for the unlocking. Since it did happen on other flavors, it should be possible to change, right? [link] [comments] |
